Why didn't Rey become as popular as Disney expected?
>>
>>223736287
They forgot to show her shitting gold turds and pissing champagne
>>
>>223736287
Its funny how he only thing popular about her ended up being Reylo shipping and spawning adaptations of fanfictions.
>>
>>223736287
didn't end up in a BMWF relationship trying to placate ASIA and fumbled from there.
>>
>>223736287
Vomit. Literally the most uninteresting character in Disney Star Wars, which is already full of uninteresting characters holy shit
>>
Well no shit, they killed all the other ones. Even Kylo was more popular and he's dead too.
>>
>>223736287
No action figures of good vidya
>>
>>223736319
You can’t write an adult female character and have her be asexual. It’s not fulfilling.
>>
>>223736388
This.
>>
I don't recall a single thing Rey did that I would describe as likable or compelling.
Even Finn had his moments. You kind of rooted for him to pull his shit together and stop being a loser.
Rey was this void of charisma that the movies where paradoxically expecting you to fall in love with.
>>
>>223736287
nobody cares about this dead shit franchise anymore
>>
Absolutely awful character. The absolute definition of a boring Mary Sue.
>>
>>223736287
>Whenever Rey's not on-screen, everyone else should be asking "Where's Rey?!"
>>
I just saw a fan edit of the sequel trilogy called Journal of the Whills. Yeah, was like I'm not watching Star Slop: Glup of the Shitto too but relented and aside from the odd but understandable continuity mistakes here and there, it was a surprisingly decent rewrite of the whole trilogy. It's not perfect, the dude had to work with the footage he's given but it's way better than the official flicks. Give it a try.
>>
>>223736287
Daisy Ridley isn't very likable. If they cast someone else then the character would've maybe had more success.
>>
>>223736591
I think Daisy Ridley is plenty likable. That character is just nothing.
>she's effortlessly better than everyone, but she doesn't know who she *is*
I'm sorry, but that's insufferable.

All they had to do was make her a cute shy girl, who gets caught up in an adventure, and they would have won.
>>
>>223736287
>maybe the only one

Hmm, perhaps if they didn't humiliate and kill Luke for NO reason...?
>>
>>223736591
Daisy Ridley is charismatic as hell
>>
>>223736674
she's very plain as a person. There's a reason nobody talks about her or waifu posts about her.
>>
>>223736728
there were a few that waifu posted about her, but then i think there were more that made fun of her.
the one with her smiling and teeth barred on top of the Aliens poster saying RUN was great

Why didn't admiral Holdo become a Star Wars icon like admiral Ackbar has?
>>
>>223736719
go to bed, Daisy
>>
>>223736287
Because despite having princesses in the previous 2 trilogies star wars wasn't a princess story. Disney was out of their element trying to make space opera cinderella. She's just boring and "my parents abandoned me" isn't enough character depth for 2 movies.
>>
>>223736477
It's more complicated than that.
It's a 'male-centric' franchise. And I don't mean that it's for men and not women. I mean that it's an action-adventure fantasy-sci-fi film instead of a romcom/drama/period piece. And that means it has to be 'fun' not melodramatic.
When you have a male protagonist and you deal with romance, men in the audience have to relate to him so you make him a bit awkward, bit of a loser. And he can't be constantly getting laid or he makes guys insecure about their lack of sex. And women have to want him to get the girl, so you have to give him a heart of gold and make him sweet/funny.
When you have a female protagonist and you deal with romance, women have to relate to her. So she has to be a bit frumpy and a bit plain and not too funny. And not an asexual monk because that feels a bit too much like slut-shaming. And men have to want to fuck her, but also feel like the guy she fucks 'earned' her.
That set of criteria for a female character is impossible and contradictory. Frumpy but hot. Sexual but plain but only fucks the male lead after he earns her.
Lucas had the right idea by making Luke mostly asexual. There's a girl he wants to rescue. There's a hint of attraction. It's not the story. The story doesn't dwell on it.
Disney sort of had the right idea by trying to do the same with Rey. Except they immediately had Finn fall in love with her. And then they leant in to the retarded Reylo shit (that literally no one except trannies wanted).

They had to commit one way or the other. The actual correct move would have been to make Rey happily married (or in a long-term relationship) and then kill off her partner in the opening.
>>
>>223736431
boyega zesty as hell it was never going to work
>>
>>223736511

Her movies weren't very good. I like the actress well enough and she was a cute but really the writing was bad and the overall trilogy was hyper garbage.
>>
>>223737305
Also SW had really run its course when Disney decided to buy it. If Lucas had never made another movie, but carried on with books, comics and vidya, that would have been just fine.

The only thing that can save SW now is desert nudist rey

Sure, sometimes, but what about James Bond, or really any male character in a movie with the "they lock eyes, cut to them fucking in the public bathroom" scene? A lot of them are male-centric franchises.

Rey is in the Cade film
>>
>>223737501
>Sure, sometimes, but what about James Bond
That's a good point that I should have clarified better.
Bond's romances aren't romances. They're glorified model showcases. There's no seduction involved. You're not supposed to root for him to get the girl or relate to him. Instead, it's the most literal form of a power fantasy. It's a different storytelling model.
And that's why that type of plot progress appeals a lot more to older men (different time etc etc), doesn't appeal at all to women, and why more modern Bond films have moved away from that.
As soon as the Bond girl becomes more than just a prop to showcase how manly Bond is, Bond has to seduce them properly. And so to take Casino Royale for example, Bond is still gritty and cold and all the rest. But he's a little nervous around Vesper. He doesn't bed her immediately. She teases him. He shows himself as vulnerable before her. And only then do they fuck.
>the "they lock eyes, cut to them fucking in the public bathroom" scene
Similar to above, it's never a romance where you're supposed to relate to it or root for it (or if it is, it fails). Most of the times it takes place in dramas as the softcore erotica part (completely different set of rules), or else, like with Bond, it's only there to be a quick way to show how manly the guy is.
The only possible exception is in like a romcom where it's trying to subvert the romantic seduction.

Disney didn't make this trilogy to make money. They knew that they could lose money on it and decided to go in that direction. With a smaller IP, there would have been more of an incentive to make something decent, but, from their perspective, Star Wars allowed them to make movies that people would hate to express their philosophy.

Compare Rey as a character to Carrie from the new show. People looooooove Carrie, and it’s not just because she’s cute (although it certainly doesn’t hurt). You look at her and understand that she’s basically the telekinetic version of the Hulk, fueled by a lifetime of repressed anger and mental abuse. She’s also sheltered, naive, and vulnerable. Rey is none of those things, but she could have been, and she’d have been far better-received if she had been.

Ridley does not have charm and she was already walling during the filming of the first movie. She's only cute and youthful during the first act, by the time they got off Jakku she was visibly fatter and cuntier looking as a result of her youth melting away before our eyes and her character went from a forlorn abandoned underdog living at the bottom of society to being a know it all bitch faced girlboss that all the old Star Wars characters love and respect for absolutely no reason and duelling Kylo Ren to near defeat before he's saved by diablos ex machina. She then proceeds to somehow get even stronger and even more loved by everyone in universe over the following films despite doing nothing to earn any of it, while not being cute or charming enough as an actress to help audiences forget that.

Because, wet cardboard is generally not very charismatic. Replace Rey entirely with Kylo Ren by himself and they would have succeed. >>
>>223740451
I don't think that's entirely true. I think they were under the impression that whatever garbage they shat out would make money regardless solely because "it's Star Wars, the people love Star Wars", and they saw that as carte blanche to just do whatever the fuck gay shit they wanted to, on the assumption that nerds would pay to see it based on brand recognition alone.
And they were right, for a time. Even after TFA you had people willing to give TLJ a shot, but once the nerds realized "oh, this isn't actually going to get any better, is it" they gave up on it, and they were the ones actually buying all the merchandise.
They set out to make movies that would piss off the audience (or at least Johnson did with TLJ) but they absolutely still thought they would be making money off it.

But anon, we're told by the other characters that she's a tactical genius and did some bullshit in the Battle of Whogivesafuck in a throwaway line, how can she fail?
this line is still hilarious because everything we see of the character tells us the exact opposite
>>
The Star Wars sequel trilogy is the most disastrous thing to happen to cinema. Think about it. The quality of movies has not recovered since Rise of Skywalker came out.
>>
>>223742119
It's crazy that some random chick from a little known 2d oriental fap cartoon has more likeability and charm than an A list actress in a billion dollar mega franchise movie.
>>
>>223742187
It's just retarded, Disney said they had their own ideas and threw the existing lore into the trash to that end only to waste so much time and money on what was essentially just the OT, but worse. If they wanted to do that, they could have just remade the originals with a new cast and been done with it as a launch pad for their Star Wars universe. It would have been equally as stupid but at least the OT would have been left alone.
>>
>>223736477
No, it's fine to have an asexual MC, male or female. Rey was just an all around boring character in a trilogy that started off boring in its premier movie and went on to piss all over the beloved original trilogy characters while devolving into utter retardation. Of course nobody gives a fuck about Rey. She's a bland character in an offensively shitty series.
>>
>>223736287
She's a sexless Mary Sue. It literally doesn't get any worse than that.

It's been ten years already? The fuck?

Imagine getting inside a time machine and going back to 1983 and being like "Hey! One day there will be Episodes 1, 2, and 3 as prequels and Lukas will sell this insanely successful franchise to Disney and Disney will blindly sink everything to the bottom of the ocean and nobody will like Star Wars anymore." There would have been a court order forcing you to be institutionalized in a loony bin for the rest of your life.
>>
Doesn't matter who they would've casted because that script was complete ass and she'd be hated across the whole fandom like Daisy is now.

The criminal who is too cool to have political opinions turning out to be a traitorous shithead is good.
The Hotshot pilot who goes against orders not being completely correct to do that is good.
Every character being familiar with the Palpatine throne room scene, taking different lessons from it and trying to speed run towards it without doing the ground work first is good.
Luke having a non-macguffin reason to fuck off to a remote island without directly telling his friends/family where he is going is good.
Having most of the movie be a big chase is conceptually good, but is undermined by the smashing up a casino subplot, which is also conceptually good for a different movie.

Bond is also an archetype or a static protagonist. He rarely undergoes any character growth, as each movie more or less tells its own contained story. Star Wars trilogy structures alternately invite the expectation of character progression from weak to strong.
>>
>>223736511
They didnt want to make her more feminine and they didn't want to make her more masculine, either in characterization or personality.

They'd have been way better off making her a princess and part of the Disney princess line. If she'd had a pink lightsaber and a dress people would at least talk about her.
>>
>>223737074
She's a side character you pick up and add to your party on one of the ten planets the devs made for you to explore, she's not a main.
What a waste of everything those turds are. At least the prequels had some good vidya come out for them, like Racer and Jedi Power Battles. The nu shit has nothing.
>>
>>223743623
No, thy fumbled that shit, too. She was abandoned through the bulk of her childhood. Unless accents are genetic in a Galaxy far, far away, she’d have been sounding like all the people around her.

They didnt do that at all. Suzanne Collins did that and you can see how successful it was. The Hunger Games puts the girl in dresses and makes her the center of a love triangle and she has all these scenes where she totally doesnt want the attention etc etc etc

Rey isnt a princess, she doesnt get one scene like that. They didnt even make star wars for girls really. If they had they would've succeeded. If Rey had like 10 different hairstyles and iconic outfits and dresses and different lightsabers and colors for whatever reason in every movie and a serious romance plot girls wouldve paid more attention to her.
>>
>>223738021
That is gay af. The novels and comics did everything so much better than George Lucas could ever hope to long before he started dipping his toes back into the Star waters.

No gaps between the movies

Luke goes from being a dumb hick to an experienced fighter pilot in the span of like a year, and gets jedi training on top of that

There's a reason Empire is considered the best of the OT
>>
>>223743552
>The criminal who is too cool to have political opinions turning out to be a traitorous shithead is good.
All it really amounts to is "what if Han just sold Luke and Obi-Wan out to the Empire, wouldn't that be funny lol" and it loses any impact because of the absolutely retarded chain of events that happen to get the characters to that point in the first place.
>The Hotshot pilot who goes against orders not being completely correct to do that is good.
Except Poe is completely validated, the ship he blows up at the start would have wiped out the Resistance fleet immediately after they jumped, instead we get the retarded slow speed chase. And again, this whole plot point only works because we have to pretend that the First Order is on such a tight budget that they can't afford to lose more than three TIE fighters across their entire fleet.
>Every character being familiar with the Palpatine throne room scene, taking different lessons from it and trying to speed run towards it without doing the ground work first is good.
I don't even know what you're implying by this. Is it just Rey trying to immediately confront Snoke, then Snoke retardedly trying to sway her and Kylo going "lol get rekt"? Because honestly, that once again just makes every character in the movie look fucking stupid.
>Luke having a non-macguffin reason to fuck off to a remote island without directly telling his friends/family where he is going is good.
His reason is ultimately dumb and completely discordant with his established character, this is the guy who refused to accept that Darth fucking Vader couldn't be redeemed and now he's throwing in the towel after having a bad dream about his nephew. Plus, there is a macguffin in the "sacred Jedi texts" which are fucking retarded because we've already seen the Jedi archives on Coruscant and they were all digital.
>the chase/casino scenes
Both insipidly boring and completely out of place in a Star Wars movie.
>>
>>223744177
Luke was already a somewhat experienced pilot, and past Yavin you don't even see him fly anything in combat outside of a snowspeeder which he also gets shot down in without scoring a single kill.
Rey in comparison just magically knows how to fly and fight and do Jedi mind tricks all in the space of a single day.

There was also 4 full years between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes back. This wasn't a quick one-year interval, he had 4 fucking years of space combat and jedi training that he had to stick to.
This 4-year gap doesn't really make sense in context of the Han-Leia relationship, because it takes a few months at most for shit to get going, but for Luke, yeah, he dove head-first into XP farming right after Owen and Beru were murdered.

Nu Wars is about destruction of a beloved franchise. You can ensure they do not win by holding on to the good Star Wars material pre-prequels and REEEmasters. "Jedi Knight" will always be a massively fun game.

>Why get more money later if I can get money now?
When what they were being paid for was throwing their money printers off a cliff. It's insane how many established IPs with huge loyal fanbases where thrown under the bus for this in the last 15 years, when all they had to do was to stay the course to collect their ever growing paychecks anyway.
