There hasn’t been a good fantasy film since The Lord of the Rings two decades ago

the unwillingness to have absolute good fight absolute evil. All Hollywood wants to do is to make morally grey actors
>>
>>223749228
I have my complaints about the Jackson LotR films, (although not near as bad as the Jackson Hobbit trilogy) but that was the last time a fantasy film was made by people who genuinely liked and respected the source material and the genre as a whole.

Not that that is any guarantee that a film will be good, but the absence of that basic respect is a fairly certain guarantee that a film will be bad.

Also, I would marry that negress if she agreed to stay in goblin mode at least 5 days a week.

It is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026

Game of thrones. The books and the tv show. It was a double whammy.

The only complaint I really have that can't be explained away by the necessities of movie making is changing Gandalf confronting the Witch King at the gate.
Like I understand why no Tim bombadil and why Gimilo ended up as comic relief but I don't get not having g the witch king do the big revela throwing back his hood to reveal a crown on no head

And there hasn't been a good fantasy book since lotr either. Maybe the whole genre is just lotr clones.

LOTR was the worst movie I have ever seen, bc I read the book first and it's impossible for a movie to match my imagination.

I would say since Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), which was a great flick

Since then you had:

Stardust (2007)

Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)

Maleficent (2014)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

The Shape of Water (2017)

The Green Knight (2021)

Wicked (2024)

One scene in the extended edition stands out as making The Return of The King worse: the embassy with the Mouth of Sauron. In the book, the purpose of the scene is to show the difference between good and evil in stark. This is undermined in the film by having Aragorn kill the messenger, no matter how deserved or satisfying it is to a big-brained audience that are all about that 'moral complexity'. The book version is morally complex because it argues there are differences, whilst the near-perfect film is spoiled by the morally simplistic reinterpretation. All of the accusations made by Sauron's servant are false, unless they aren't.

Most academic philosophers believe in objective moral truth though.
Moral relativism isn't actually more complex or difficult, in fact it's easier in a certain sense, because it means you can avoid making harsh judgments of foreign cultures.

these are the only kinda decent films on the list

They are still making tons of capeshit, Disney, Pixar, and horror movies but modern audiences often view pure, flawless heroes as unrealistic or boring. Writing a protagonist with internal conflicts, trauma, or questionable ethics makes them feel more human.

Then people like stuff like
The Sopranos
John Wick
Breaking Bad
Etc

>>
>>223749228
Fantasy only works when the people involved take it seriously, and taking anything seriously is uncool now. It's why all these superhero movies have constant quips; the people involved have to broadcast to the audience that they definitely don't care about this nerd junk. You either go grimdark or make everything a quipfest or you're cringe for caring.

Like a lot of things it was a combinations of things LOtR, harry potter, GoT did influence a lot of fantasy movies in the coming years both by the companies trying to ape the style and trying to not be a direct clone so they use replacement words for common shit like elves and orcs
Zombies and Vampies and Modern Military became way more popular in the mid to late 00s that carried on until i guess the 2015s
Maybe the biggest thing was the rise of super hero stuff that eclipsed fantasy as a whole and replacing it.
Modern producers think they need to go really massive with fantasy stuff or it won't make money so you can't even get low budget stuff anymore.

CGIslop will never look good and has destroyed any creativity and self restraint filmmakers used to have when it came to fantasy.

Hollywood is an oligarch run propaganda industry and right now the oligarchs are neck deep in demoralization which means all fantasy will not be escapism but propaganda where you will be forced to see multiracial societies where they would not exist and ugly people and a focus on muh grey and gray morality

All (American) made fantasy from now on will be The Rings of Power.

What people don't get about Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul) is that those shows do not support "gray morality". Good and evil is black and white in that world, just like in real life. Walter, Mike, Jimmy, Kim, etc. all fool themselves into thinking they can make a balancing act out of it and it blows up in all their faces.

They weren't there to negotiate, they were there to fight. Some dumbass messenger comes out and starts provoking them, no matter the truth of the matter negotiations go wrong for him. This doesn't undermine Aragorn's morality or resolve.

Or what, would you rather have Gondor make prisoners of the Uruk officers and invite them to dine and offer them soccer matches in the pow camps?

Multiculturalism, heterogeneity, and globalism. Same thing that killed the adventure genre. Can't show black people with bones piercing their noses, can't show Chinese in opium dens, can't show Indians eating monkey brains. People got it in their head that "barbarian" and "savage" meant "evil" and now refuse to show any wildly strange culture even if they're content and thriving. The orcs have to speak english, the elves have to live in human cities, and the goblins run the shops - and they all adhere to Californian cultural standards.

interesting video, it's kind of what Ursula Le Guin says in From Elfland to Poughkeepsie, basically that the tone of a fantasy story should not be grounded our gritty reality. Of course this doesn't go well with the modern rules of storytelling that put trauma and character complexity and relatability on a pedestal
>>
>>223749228
Star Wars prequels were the last good fantasy movies. For some reason now Fantasy = grimdark people quietly whispering in a British accent in a dimly lit room. Doesn't make for something good to watch.
>>
>>223749228
Fantasy is actually objectively really hard. Good fantasy comes from effort. People get the impression that it's simple but their products suck.
>>
This applies to scifi too, nowadays everything turns into character studies, trauma peddling and pointless angsty drama. Just look at The 3 body problem and Foundation, they took stories that are about concepts and universe-spanning narratives and made them about the main character's issues and feefees.
