Now that the dust has settled, what went wrong?
>>
>>223755246
Never seen it, but someone said it was just a movie version of a documentary they did a few years ago. Also Blunt didn't show bewbs.
>>
>>223755246
People are tired of the Rock. Just a rehash of a documentary. MMA doesn’t make good movie like boxing does
>>
>>223755246
It's kino
>>
Sports movies are in a weird place because sports fans can just watch the actual sport with real athletes competing instead of watching a movie where actors play pretend. Trying to make a gritty 'adult' sports movie is tough because nobody really wants it. Sports movies work better when they're silly like space jam. Why would anyone want to watch a 'realistic' mma movie when you can just watch real mma?
>>
>>223755246
nothing happens
>>
I hate sportsball. Only dumb people watch sportsball. I watch twitch streamers and netflix, which are far more sophisticated than the bread and circuses of sportsball.
>>
Kerr was a literal who from an era of MMA that most normies had little to no interaction with. Also Dwayne can't act.
>>
>>223755246
ufc is not that popular, and nobody who's a big ufc fan wants to watch the rock pretend to fight
>>
>>223755246
MMA has a terrible reputation and it's mostly deserved. People see it as a sport of thugs, criminals, inbreds, deviants, bigots, race supremacists. You can thank both the fighters and the fans for that. Many people have no interest in any attempt to humanize these guys. This is coming from someone who watches it.
>>
>>223756238
Not even that. Just actual wrestling is not fun watch compared to
striking. Ground and pound shit and two dudes laying on top of each other and rolling around for position
>>
>>223756252
I'm pretty sure that anon was mocking that typical anti-sports sentiment. Please delete your post. You're making us sports fans look really dumb.
>>
>>223755246
It was not a compelling story and the Rock cannot act.
Compare it to The Wrestler. Do you get why people liked it! For the same reasons, being awful instead of what Wrestler was good at, that’s why this film was hated.
>>
>>223756238
I was under the impression MMA in the States at least was one of the most popular sports. It certainly has overtook boxing
>>
>>223757948
No on both counts, something easily determined by looking at purses and PPV buys, along with other ratings metrics. Also: Mexicans.
>>
>>223757970
This. UFC even more irrelevant since took money and now on Paramount+ which is tiny subscriber base. What killed boxing when went from network tv to niche premium channel HBO and Showtime. Now boxing on Netflix and DAZN which Amazon props up
>>
>>223755246
never forget the wikipedia edit of the plot summary that said "the rock smashes things like a machine."
>>
>>223755246
Emily blunt is in this? That's weird, aren't they in jungle cruise together?
>>
Benny is not a good director
>>
no one cared
>>
Its funny how the craziest fight scene in this movie isnt even a MMA fight, its the fight between the rock and Emily blunt at the house
>>
>>223755322
you could absolutely make a kino forrest griffin movie
>>
>>223755246
Subject is still alive, unlike the Iron Claw guys. Jewish hubris that anything they shit out w/ le irony, le pseud, with A24 sticker is High/Nu Art.
>>
>>223759832
Building up to the Bonnar fight would be pretty great. Movie would feel pretty weird if it went to the Silva fight, though.
>>
>>223760303
yeah i was thinking the bonnar fight has to be the big climax at the end of the movie
>>
>>223755246
Basically I think everybody who would ever have any reason to care about the story was already familiar with it from the documentary of the same name. So basically, it was boring for both the target audience as well as everybody else.

It kind of reminds me of the first Dune movie. Everything that was so amazingly cool and original about Dune the book had been plagiarized to death by other films like Star Wars so by the time people saw the Dune movie, everything that was "cool" about it was now seen as a worn-out cliche' that had been done better many times before. Instead of being the "next Star Wars!" it ended up feeling like a pretentious ripoff, even though Star Wars was the real ripoff, people back then just couldn't care less about such distinctions, they wanted to be passively entertained by mindless slop, not shocked and engrossed by something cheap and tawdry at best and incomprehensible and bizarre at worst.

Smashing Machine had a very similar problem, it was overly familiar and boring for people familiar with it and yet bizarre and incomprehensible to people who knew nothing about it and really didn't care.

Also, unlike everybody else who praised it, I didn't find the Rock's performance to bear much resemblance to the real Mark Kerr. He brought out the boring and not-too-bright side of Kerr's personality very well, but he couldn't do the same for his achingly sweet and genuinely charming side. The result was like baking a cake but forgetting the sugar.
>>
>>223755246
It was obvious Oscar bait.
>>
>>223759832
why, what's so interesting about him

His self-deprecating sense of humor that comes from being painfully well-acquainted with his fairly well below average looks, athletic talent, upbringing, and station, which is belied by his FEROCIOUS desire to prove himself and overcome his own and everyone else's justified low opinion of him by out-working, out-fighting, and out-gritting all the fortunate ones he has to compete with.

He's a genuinely good dude who is more aware of his own shortcomings than anyone and thus has tremendous empathy for and understanding of the shortcomings of others, and he meets his challenges with the toughness, courage, and coolness of a slightly more demented Cool Hand Luke. A guy who knows he's been dealt a piss-poor hand but he's going to play it like it's four aces anyway because FUCK IT. And just by playing a shit hand with a shit-eating grin, he manages to turn those shit cards into a winning hand a hell of a lot more often than not.

His books are genuinely hilarious. The first one, "Got Fight?" would have been even funnier if they let him keep his original title, "Who Moved My Nose?" but the publishers forced him to change it because they felt that the primary audience, young male MMA fans, wouldn't get the reference to the otherwise very popular self-help book, "Who Moved My Cheese?"

UFC is vastly more popular today than it was a decade ago. Used to be super niche now it's mainstream
>>
>>223760333
No way, the opposite.

You START with the Bonnar fight and you make that fight be the centerpiece of the first 20 minutes of the film. But instead of showing just the bloody, brutal, knock-down, drag-out fight itself, you use the fight as a backdrop to include several amusing flashbacks to Forrest's childhood, to his brief stint as a podunk Cop in Georgia, to his debut as a no-name, no-talent fighter in Toughman competitions, to his ridiculous antics on the Ultimate Fighter show and his grueling training under Coach Randy Couture.

Use the flashbacks to help explain the toughness and grit and indomitable will to keep pushing forward through pain and exhaustion against a more talented and experienced opponent who is just as tough and just as desperate to win.

Show that he's a People's Champ first, before you show his actual title run and reign as champion. Then make the Silva fight the last fight of the movie and make the last fifteen minutes or so about his life post-retirement.
>>
>>223761392
There's no such thing as "mainstream" anymore, that's the difference. Everything is niche. The UFC didn't "conquer" the mainstream, it outlasted the entire concept.

RAMEN, my Nigga.
>>
>>223755246
He’s 30 years too old
>>
>>223755246
because kerr isn't too well known and anyone who does know him probably watched his documentaries already
also doesn't help that the rock isn't really playing a new role, he's still playing a big strong guy, just one who's more flawed and realistic
>>
>>223755246
.....my wife said that both this character and the guy from "the chair company" remind her of me. Am I cooked, chat?
>>
>>223755479
Yeah the history is wierd. Im almost 40, I MISS social NBA/NFL stuff from the late 90s and 2000s. It's kind of sucked for years BUT theres like a century of history for those sports, I enjoyed the HBO one about the Lakers not only for the sports but for the nostalgia. I wish they'd make more like that. I know its expensive and I know it must be hard legally. But still. Theres a lot of historical sports entertainment to be made and someone will at some point.

Should have cast someone who can actually draw the house like Big Kev, or as he is known in some circles Big Frisky.
>>
>>223755246
Released at the worst time in the sports history, where literally everyone around this sport is universally hated because of the current politics
Should have been shelved for at least the next two to three years and then see if the culture had shifted
>>
It's a great film destined for cult status but it bombed because apart from people being tired of the star of the film at the time, it's about a niche subject (90s UFC) in a niche place (Phoenix).
>>
even with all the prosthetics, he still just looks like the rock to me, or a weird bizarro version of mark kerr where his face is shaped wrong and is old
