stephen king lifemogging stanley kubrick
>>
>>223756281
On his deathbed he'll say the film was good
>>
god he's so reddit
>>
>>223756281
Does he really have nothing better to do than seething at random people calling his novel mid on Xitter?
>>
>>223756281
The reason Stephen doesn't like Kubrick's Shining is because Kubrick based Jack on Stephen King himself, unfiltered, and without the sympathy the book gave him.
Book Jack is a drug-addled abuser but it's because he's a victim of the ghosts! It's Stephen King excusing his negligence.
Movie Jack is a sack of shit from the first frame. He already broke his boy's arm and his wife is already scared of him. The ghosts just saw somebody who fit in. They didn't curse him at all.
That infuriated King. Kubrick indicted him.
>>
>>223756325
Well his friend Maxwell was a mod there

You mean Richard Bachman, right

steven king isnt real. jews just put his name on generic horror stories so they dont get sued by randoms who wrote the same story 30 years ago and did nothing with it because its boring generic slop.
>>
>>223756281
This is 100% true. Of all the notorious crap that's been made out of his work the one movie he's still seething about is an undisputed classic. Also, The Shining is his most overrated book by far.
>>
>>223756476
Book Jack is an alcoholic trying to quit because he's secretly a good guy, but the ghosts made him drink again. He was a self insert showing that King secretly wasn't a bad guy just because he blasted his mind out with every drug he could afford.
>>
>>223756476
it's been a while but iirc in the book jack is ultimately treated like a good person but is weak to his vices and the ghosts ultimately take advantage of that
in reality he would be considered a piece of shit for being unable to control himself, regardless of whatever sob story he came up with
>>
>>223756511
And that's exactly what Kubrick showed. He stripped away all the self-pity and "victim of addiction" shit and showed the overbearing snide asshole he met.
>>
The only version of The Shining I've ever seen is the Simpsons version.
>>
>>223756281
Why does he do this? He reminds of another famous author who constantly gets in twitter fights with retards because he has to be right about everything all the time and has to correct the record.and believes his twitter detractors should enjoy prison.

If I were that guy I'd honestly just respond by posting White Lines by Grandmaster Flash and the excerpt where Jack, King's self-insert, goes on a rant about how he identifies with a child rapist.

There's a crazy amount of child porn peppered throughout his career. He stopped at some mafia bit in Dark Tower 3 I think where there was a drawer full of magazines of 10 year old girls making out.
Course there's also the library policeman.

The Shining book is very goofy. Danny is 5 but thinks and talk like a teenager. He tells his parents about the shining and that ghosts are trying to get him halfway through the story but nothing really come out of it, they still let him roam around unsupervised and he's almost killed 3 or 4 times. And people probably know about the dumbest scenes with the possessed fire hose, animated hedge animals and dog costume guy from the TV movie.

The book is a clusterfuck. Do we need a subplot about a mob hit and all the other crap you already mentioned?
>>
>>223756895
Yeah Jack's investigation on the past of the hotel is ultimately pointless.
Also the whole beehive theme/metaphor going on through the story is just bizarre and not spooky at all.
>>
Why would great directors choose to adapt his books if they weren't good?
>>
>>223756965
Good books aren't necessarily good source material for movies, if anything the opposite is true. How many masterpieces of literature have been made into classics of cinema? Very few. Instead many of the best movies ever made were adapted from random pulp novels nobody remembers anymore.
>>
>>223756965
Name becomes synonymous with quality after a certain point, even after the quality starts declining. Everyone has come to know that "Stephen King is a good writer" so anything he makes is good, because Stephen King is a good writer, remember? He's a good writer, so his stuff has to be good. It's brand recognition.
>>
>>223756281
Stephen King books must do something right considering all the sales and adaptations and cultural relevance and whatnot
>>
>>223756326
Getting rich/famous and then talking shit to plebs everyday on the internet seems like a peaceful life thoughever

His books are good. Or were I don't know I didn't read all of them and certainly not the new ones but the classics are all pretty good. Carrie is probably the weakest but even that has some charm. That being said from the ones I've read only the black tower and It adaptation never surpassed the books, everything else? The movie versions are just better: Carrie, Christine, Shining, Cujo, I would argue the pet sematary from the 90s is also better than the book.

I have to agree. Whenever king has these stick up his ass responses over specific book adaptations. It’s always because he has a personal attachment to the book in question

For Carrie, it’s his first published successful book, his wife saved it from the trash.

For the shining it’s pretty much about king himsekf. Stephen King is Jack Torrance, the whole story is about addiction, neglecting/abusing your family. The ghosts and hotel represent inner demons etc

It’s why Jack is actually a victim of circumstance in the book, not an inherently abusive man. Changing this in the movie to him always beinf abusive under the surface but barely controlling it is a tacit attack on king himself as far as he is concerned

But king got to make his own adaptation of the shining and it’s sucked so what does he know?

He's literally already said the film was good and he overreacted.
Anyone who has actually read the book can understand his reaction, even if the movie is almost objectively better. Jack Torrence is reduced to a complete selfish asshole, basically just an evil person with no redeeming qualities. The wife is turned into an emotional push over who can't tell her husband no. And the son is just a lil baby guy who waddles around the movie being scared. Whereas in the book Jack is a greek tragedy of a man trying and failing to overcome his alcoholism so he doesn't end up like his dad, only to become something worse. The mom has an actual personality beyond being sad and afraid. Danny is a far more proactive character too.
>"buh wuh bout duh manta ray at the end?"
Anyone who says this is just admitting they know nothing about the book outside a fucking did you know gaming video. The manta ray is a single sentence and is arguably more metaphorical than literal

If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it. It's originally his work, so he's entitled to that opinion. And without his original work, the movie would not exist.

Stephen King likes little kids'!

His work of "kids/teens in peril" definitely plays on the Kincaid's soft-normalization of pedophilia -- "Blame the public, not media makers or advertisers for closeted pedophilia; just admit kids are inherently hot, so we don't fake-worry about their safety, & imperfect parenting means sexualizing kids is red herring":

>In Erotic Innocence James R. Kincaid explores contemporary America’s preoccupation with stories about the sexual abuse of children. Claiming that our culture has yet to come to terms with the bungled legacy of Victorian sexuality, Kincaid examines how children and images of youth are idealized, fetishized, and eroticized in everyday culture. Evoking the cyclic elements of Gothic narrative, he thoughtfully and convincingly concludes that the only way to break this cycle is to acknowledge—and confront—not only the sensuality of children but the eroticism loaded onto them.
>Drawing on a number of wide-ranging and well-publicized cases as well as scandals involving such celebrities as Michael Jackson and Woody Allen, Kincaid looks at issues surrounding children’s testimonies, accusations against priests and day-care centers, and the horrifying yet persistently intriguing rumors of satanic cults and “kiddie porn” rings. In analyzing the particular form of popularity shared by such child stars such Shirley Temple and Macaulay Culkin, he exposes the strategies we have devised to deny our own role in the sexualization of children. Finally, Kincaid reminds us how other forms of abuse inflicted on children—neglect, abandonment, inadequate nutrition, poor education—are often overlooked in favor of the sensationalized sexual abuse coverage in the news, on daytime TV talk shows, and in the elevators and cafeterias of America each day.
This bold and critically enlightened book will interest readers across a wide range of disciplines as well as a larger general audience interested in American culture.
>>
>>223756965
I think one of the bigger problems is that the stuff he's actually really good at writing doesn't translate well to film. I don't know if there's an actual term for it, but large portions of It, The Tommyknockers, and Salem's Lot are just quick snapshots of things going on around town that may or may not ever intersect with the main plot. The Stand has a similar thing going on where the middle of the book is full of vignettes showing society crumbling and brief stories a few paragraphs long about people who survived the plague dying from random bad luck. I never read The Shining so I have no idea if it has something similar going on.
>>

IIRC book Jack had his own father being an alcoholic, abusive and violent piece of shit and he tried to stop becoming one in turn (he had gotten serious wakeup calls after breaking his son’s arm while drunk, also almost killing another kid while drunk driving) but the ghosts of the Overlook preyed on his demons and made him plunge back.

So it’s more like Jack could have been a good man, he WANTED to be a good man and a good husband and a good father, but he went to the worst place possible and was too weak to handle it. It doesn’t excuse what he did.

yeah, King loves his schmaltz, and Kubrick hates schmaltz, so Kubrick was never going to make anything King could connect with. there's no mystery why King gets along with Mike Flanagan so well, and I'm sure if he could make Kubrick's Shining more like a Flanagan picture, King would love it.

Outside of Kubrick and Carpenter, maybe Reiner, who are the other great directors? Flanagan fucking sucks. Is the Mist director actually "great," Green Mile is peak boomer slop. Creepshow was a split with Romero, basically their TFtC. The crazy thing about King is how he mastered the easiest part of horror, the entry point, his titles alone usually boil down to the very essence of the book. The best Halloween costumes are the ones your brain fully registers in a second. The same with King's books. Yet so few horror authors if any mastered this first step. So if you're a director, this is the appeal, you have the best of outlines to color in, to the extent that King's name is an outline itself, which secures commercial appeal and ensures security that it will get made, widely released and circulate for decades. I'll never understand why so many horror writers do not create a simple clear jumping off point. A cursed car. A cursed resort. Cursed pet cemetery. Cursed clown. Cursed bullied teen. Cursed lake blob. A cursed teen body in the woods. Cursed rabid dog. Now do this for Koontz or Barker or much much later, Grady Hendrix. You can't.

Most addicts are pieces of shit even without their drugs or booze. Kubrick was right in portraying Jack as a bad man whose violent impulses are innate to him and the alcohol only brings them to the surface, it doesn't create them. King's woe is me approach to this character should rightfully be mocked.

The best and most most faithful adaptation of his work was The Stand (1992).

How profound is it that
>Hotel California album released December 1976
>Hotel California single released February 1977
>The Shining was published January 1977

Boomers never recovered

No way you put creepshow 2 above 1 and pet semetary at c tier below shit like children of the corn
>>

No, this is in fact not obvious. Someone came 20+ years after the release of The Shining with a high quality home video copy and pointed it out. If anything, it was an in joke when they were filming the movie

children of the corn sucks but pet sematary isn't much better. I think people have a lot of nostalgia for it, but the third act is genuinely unwatchable, you can't make a toddler as the villain work on screen. Even the newer adaption knew this (but still fucked up in a million different ways)
