hold up. I just realized that the regular release of Odyssey is actually cropped, and that in order to see the full image, you need to watch it on 70mm in an imax theatre.

This is seems like kind of a retarded choice, cinematography speaking.

What do you guys think?
>>
Can't watch it until release in 2 weeks

that's how it always works

An open matte rip will pop up hopefully
>>
>>223756402
im sure the "sold out" screening will have only five people there lmao
>>
>>223756402
Why isn't there just a single universal aspect ratio for all television and theater screens so cropping isn't a thing?
>>
>>223756728
There is. It's glorious 1:33:1 and all you need is a time machine.

tl;dr TV ratio was original theatrical ratio
>>
odyssey chopped

>>223756402
All movies are cropped
>>
>>223756402
It's not retarded at all. It's simply a 1.43:1 movie. If you want the full experience then yes you need to watch it on a 1.43:1 screen with a projector capable of filling it with a 1.43:1 image. Unfortunately there aren't many of those but the success of this movie means there'll hopefully be more in the future.
The cropped versions were produced carefully and framed shot-by-shot to keep everything important. But it's worth travelling a few hours to see it in 70mm imax if you can.
>>
>>223756402
Yeah it's a shame, new godzilla is gonna be fucked too
>>
Why don't they have versions for places without imax where they simply put black bars on the sides of the screen to have imax ratio, it would only work on large screens but it would be better than nothing
>>
>>223757076
They do, but they don't care.

RETVRN TO 3:4
>>
The funny part is that all theaters have to do is turn a simple screw and it's Imax-sized. This has been a fact since the 1950s.
>>
I even got to experience the projectionist ruin Hannibal for everyone in my auditorium because when they opened it up, we got to see all the rigging for he special effects in the brain dinner scene.
And they started messing with the masking during the middle of the film for no reason. Thanks, assholes.

>cinematography speaking
It looks like common center. They're basically shooting with TV in mind like back in the 4:3 days... except in reverse.
>>
>>223756402
Also they chopped the movie down in the editing room, to make it less than 3 hours long, because IMAX reels can't do more than 3 hours, as in technical limitation.
So every peon in the world got the cropped version, and also the shitty edit that carried from the movie being shown in its true format to only 41 screens in the world.
>>
>>223757076
That's what they did for my showing of Digger.
That's just Nolan autism who forbidden it to give IMAX jews their exclusivity.
>>
>>223756402
Everyone I knew who saw both said the 70mm regular was better framed than the imax 70.
>>
>>223756402
Is imax just 3:4? Guess it's time to watch all of them on my CRT
>>
>>223756728
For real. Its really fucking annoying.

I saw the 70mm imax at Grauman's Chinese theater in LA and I wasn't impressed. I suppose it was 5+ minute long segments of incessant ear rape that soured my experience and opinion of the whole film. I actually had to put my earbuds in during the storm to muffle the sound because my ears were getting tired. How was the sound in a regular Imax?
>>
>>223758233
Sound at citywalk was very good, probably the most clear and non ear rapey I've ever experienced for a Nolan theatrical release. My friends didn't see the 70mm at Chinese, maybe that's an issue with this movie's audio on Chinese's audio system. I did hear it was ear rapey for a lot of other theaters too though.
