What is interesting about this film is that it (accidentally) reinforces the violent power fantasy and themes of the first one. It is quite subversive and radical. In this sequel, Arthur loses because he does not embrace his Joker persona. As the Joker, he has supporters, militants and women at his disposal. For the first time in his life, he is somewhat powerful. When he cries in court and confesses that he has no desire to be the Joker, his supporters, along with Harley, walk out. Suddenly, Joker militants breach the courthouse, extract Arthur, and help him escape via a stolen taxi. Despite the possibility of freedom and commanding his supporters, he escapes the taxi to find Harley, only to learn she does not like him anymore. This leads to him getting re-arrested, thrown back in jail, and killed by another inmate.Despite what Todd Phillips says, this film SHOWS us that Arthur should have just went along with maintaining his Joker persona. When you cross the rubicon into committing violence, and thus exerting power, you absolutely must not backtrack. You have to go all the way, or else you will get fucked over (again). You will lose everything if you give up the one thing that gave you everything. When he sobs in court and ultimately shifts the blame on his shitty life from society/the system to himself, he is surrendering. He cucked. Arthur getting extracted from the courthouse was a pivotal moment. He has the last chance at an extraordinary life, but his sentimentality and attachment to a woman gets the best of him. He lacks the capability of or even the interest in being a violent revolutionary which is why he is a loser. He is just someone who wants a normal life where every single person gives him validation. In the end, he gets killed by someone who is genuinely more capable, deranged and sincere.
