That was the SOP for them to go into cold storage.

What was his plan though?

It's not your fault, Hugh Mann

Didn't he say that they lied to him about it being a suicide mission? Therefore it's the fault of the mission planners. At the very least the main character's crew should've been made aware that these people would likely be pissed or insane.
>>
>>223758001
He wasn't thinking like that. He was rationalizing everything to himself, trying to justify his actions. Whatever lead towards survival. Like a drowning person.

its shit writing. we need to bring back westerns to remind people of frontier spirit. one way deep space flight isnt suicide. its adventure.
>>
>>223758211
The whole point of the series is that humanity is about to die from some mystery weatherAIDS that totally isn't global warming, and so they have to send out desperate suicide missions since a convenient wormhole just happened to open up right by jupiter.
>>
>>223758175
He had one but he turned it into an IED to kill the black scientist.
>>
>>223758084
Project Hail Mary is a better movie. The Martian is still great though, but for some reason the /tv/ hivemind decided it was "reddit" ten years ago and has hated it ever since. PHM has the same sense of humor and it gets a pass. Pisses me off. You watch both for the visuals, not the writing.

>>223758211
I checked and I was wrong, they were very clear that it was a suicide mission. What's shit writing is that he's supposed to be some global hero and the best astronaut on earth, yet still turns into a psycho. They should've had him be some random astronaut who went crazy.
>>
>>223758318
>The Martian is still great though
The short story is great. The movie is fucking abominable. Worst thing I've ever seen.
>>
>>223758338
I've had dozens of people post shit like this over years of posting about the Martian and I have yet to see a well reasoned argument from any of you. You bring up the Chinese scenes, or "science the shit out of this", or the quirky NASA math guy, all of which take up maybe 15 minutes of the movie.
>>
literally all he had to do was go to sleep. but nope, he decides to drag other people down with him. what a fucking dick. fuck this guy.
>>
>>223757918
No comrades.
Also no miracles, he lied in his reports and didn't mention the planet was useless because it was just frozen clouds.
I watched The Martian after this and it was so strange.
>>
>>223758416
Because in the book he's a childish retard but he does clever engineering stuff and has to cobble things together from scratch, and it's pretty fun. The movie is just some really standard schlock that removes all of that. It doesn't even try to be creative or interesting in the way it's shot or directed. It's just like "here's a bowl of your standard threadbare hollywood schlock complete with obnoxious diversity casting". Also Matt Damon is not the person for that role, it's totally miscast.

It feels like Hollywood is a starving person so desperate for source material to exploit they'll latch onto damn near anything at this point. But what they churn out in the end is always the same bog-standard movie schlock. Nothing interesting or artistic, or notable. It's just the same story beats, the same closeups, the same shitty quips. It's so bad.
>>
>>223758018
>Didn't he say that they lied to him about it being a suicide mission
No
>these people would likely be pissed or insane
No, because they should have only been receiving signals from planets that were so hospitable to human life. Those guys would have been really happy. Dr. Mann is just a pussy.
>>
>>223758247
It's not "convenient", humanity from the future opened the wuurmhoowule
>>
>>223758555
It's humanity from the future who became 5th dimensional entities that can only communicate through gravity. So by opening the wormhole they get the astronaut guy to travel, and then when he goes into the blackhole he can send a message back, completing the timeloop so humans get gravitational technology.
But it does make you wonder, why they didn't just send the message back themselves, why did they need him for that? Then they tried to draw some weird connection "gravity is love" like....what the fuck? So because of his love for his daughter he can control gravity and communicate through the love connection. But one of the weird parts is how he can escape the black hole. Because I though the 5th dimensional aliens couldn't directly interfere and could only manipulate gravity, but somehow they're able to physically transport him through space to the human space station.
>>
>>223758788
>But it does make you wonder, why they didn't just send the message back themselves, why did they need him for that?
They literally explain in the movie they can't because they don't have a way of doing it, because they don't have any kind of connection to Murph
>>
>>223758887
The part of "gravity is love" is where this whole thing breaks down and starts to become a question mark. Like wtf does that mean?
>>
>>223758247
Funniest bit to me is the reddit crowd praised the Martian for tackling global warming and overpopulation, but starting exactly in 2016 if you didn't want to open your doors to millions of third worlders and shovel USAID to India and Africa you were a heckin nazi
>>
>>223758416
They changed many aspects along the way, including how he's saved. It's pozzed for Chestain's character.

Gay and dumb. PHM is a better movie. Martian is a better book.
>>
>>223758788
>>223758907
Ok so using their weird logic. Let's say it's a timeloop. The timeloop would be unstable. Like after 5 iterations someone does something exceptionally different that makes the next loop out-of-whack. But the loop DOES remain stable upon certain things, in particular where there's an irrational force driving the characters to action, like love. So the loop can go unstable and rebalance itself to a stable optimum, because of the love emotion.

That's the crude rationalization you could come up with. But then again remember that, this loop is inside a meta-loop. The wormhole was opened up by the future aliens. So they must be doing a bit of timeloop shenanigans themselves. Somehow the future humans affect the past, the enable the past humans to achieve their timeloop. But how did the humans survive to the future in the first iteration in the first place? It becomes a chicken and egg problem.
>>
>>223759096
>But how did the humans survive to the future in the first iteration in the first place?
My headcanon is the wormhole was always there, 5D humans didn't put it there. That's all that's needed for Anne Hathaway to go to the Earth like planet and those test tube babies are the ones who evolve into the 5D humans. And I'm going with that and FUCK you.
>>
>>223759199
Well maybe the climate disaster on earth left some survivors, who eventually reached that level. Then they started timelooping like it was nobody's business because they're basically 5th dimensional so doing this is basically as easy as humans lifting something through the 3rd dimension from ground to table.
So for this future race to establish a wormhole would just be routine for them. All they need to do is give access to the blackhole, ensuring the humans on earth would start timelooping too. Maybe they didn't even need to specifically select the characters, maybe the characters themselves manifested as the loop stabilized.
>>
>>223759199
I just go with the explanation that the characters were wrong and future humans didn't create the wormhole.
>>
>>223758907
you niggers always miss the point with this. Love isn't being literally described as a dimension or product of physics. The aliens put cooper into the 4D space timeloop thing to have him find an object or point in time that he can manipulate in a way to communicate to murph, and the father-daughter paternal love that they have for each other is what guides his intuition to decide to use the watch as a means to communicate the data from the black hole- and conversely, murph's innate love for her father is what drives her intuition to see the message in the dust, and the bookshelf, and finally the watch and put together the pieces that it's actually her dad communicating with her. The idea is that love is a gut instinct that sometimes should be followed and listened to, not that love is some kind of actual physical force like gravity or separate dimension. I figured this shit out the first time I ever watched the movie and psueds on the internet always try to can the movie with some stupid fucking "eeerrrmmm love is le gravity?? Kinda corny Nolan" bullshit. This movie should be a litmus test for basic emotional intelligence to filter out fucking retards if nothing else.
>>
>>223759353
>TARS, translate the data into Morse code
>Cooper, the first number has more digits than there are atoms in the universe
>It's necessary...
>>
>>223759418
How scientifically accurate nolan gets with the movie is a whole different can of worms but the whole theme about love is solid and people who fail to understand it are actual mongoloids
>>
>>223758084
I've watch The Martian at least a dozen times. It's a great movie but there are a few things that piss me off like how they pretend "the slingshot maneuver" is some genius idea when it was used for Apollo 13, and how they need to use the Mars images from the cafeteria to figure out he's driving in a straight line directly for the other ship.
>>
>>223758338
You like the writing of Andy Weir?
Seriously?
>>
>>223757918
>they would leave him to die 100%
If they can leave, then they can take him with them. And it's their fault for going to the blackhole planet first. They wasted two decades there when they could have gone to Mann's planet much sooner before he went insane. There was zero chance a black hole world would ever be viable no matter what signal they picked up
>>
>>223757918
he completely lacked the faustian spirit, he was weak
>>
>>223758555
That's very convenient. If humanity survived and became God-like, then why the fuck do they care so much about what happened millions of years ago? Especially when they're above time? It all worked out fantastically. That was part of humanity's destiny. Billions had to be sacrificed so that humanity could ascend into the higher plane. But now they need to go back millions of years to change it.. for some reason? What to delay the ascention? Have billions more ascend to be Time-Gods?
>>
>>223757918
I got to the 2nd to last line before I realized it wasn't The Martian
>>
>>223760364
>And it's their fault for going to the blackhole planet first. They wasted two decades there when they could have gone to Mann's planet much sooner before he went insane. There was zero chance a black hole world would ever be viable no matter what signal they picked up
Or spent 2 seconds to observe the planet from a distance to notice the tidal bulge.
Not to mention they could have taken their sweet fucking time investigating literally everything else in the system and it would have been a few minutes passing on the planet.
Then you get the extra retarded step of death grips arbitrarily deciding to waste decades of life support and food instead of staying in cryo sleep.
>>
>>223760582
>then why the fuck do they care so much about what happened millions of years ago?
Its a causal loop. They survive into the future because in the past humanity was saved by their intervention in the future.
>>
>>223758318
>The Martian is still great though, but for some reason the /tv/ hivemind decided it was "reddit" ten years ago and has hated it ever since
It's a correct assessment
The token "our smartest scientist black man" explaining a velocity-boosting gravity slingshot as if nobody in NASA ever heard of it was some of the most pathetic woke pandering in movie history. Plus they made that character so "quirky smart autistic" he didn't know the director of NASA. Pure vomit

Contrast that with the WHITE MALE refined cockiness of the "smartest man in the world" NASA scientist in the movie Armageddon.Despite that movie being ridiculous the character was far more believable. They weren't pandering and were not afraid to say a white man is the smartest person in the room.

actual smart people don't talk like this, but besides that she literally says that love is the only thing we can perceive that transcends time and space and that it's possible it's some kind of force in another dimension that we just can't understand yet

Oh is this not a Martian thread :(
>>
>>223763031
it's your fault for interpreting a thematic idea literally
love lets murph understand the meaning of her dad's communication
the future man can't communicate to murph because murph wouldn't understand them, and that is why her dad can communicate to her through space and time, because she can understand what he's trying to tell her, because of love
imagine being a golem
