Last night I joined the war on Digger

On the side of Digger
>>
I go see it twice a week
>>
>>223762228
I have so far been able to convince exactly 0 people to go see it
Sorry for letting you down
>>
>>223762228
It felt like yet another movie that could have been far better as a miniseries. Too much that wasn't expounded upon, themes that felt hamfisted because of the limited time spent upon, regardless of your politics.
>>
>>223762228
I too watched it last night. It was just me and two others, and one of them saw it because she thought she bought tickets for some other movie she wanted to see.
>>
Wait for VoD is too long I want to watch it again now
>>
>>223762507
How was it on the big screen?
>>
>>223762562
Amazing. The best theatre experience I've had in over a decade.
>>
>>223762562
It's not the screen, it's the big speakers. You go hear this movie in the theaters.
>>
>>223762562
I was actually confused at was going on at first, but then by the I think I've got it. But I don't really know if it being on the big screen is enhancing the experience or not. It would probably work on TV-screens as well.

I took it to be that the film is doing so bad commercially that it is being spun as a deliberate war on the film, that right minded good doing people have to step in to fight back against

Digger's monologue at the EU was a religious experience in IMAX. I saw it twice, and I was completely transfixed/mesmerized both time. Unbelievable film. Unbelievable performance. Unbelievable soundtrack.

Film of the decade (along with Eddington).
>>
>see it last night with a friend
>we get there 20 to 30 mins late
>just one other guy in the viewing
>we miss everything right up to the explosion
>friend has to go to the toilet right at the start of the speech scene
>she still thinks it was good and liked the ending

I'm going to go back on Sunday night to see the whole thing
>>
>>223762228
That's ripper mate. Remember to see it more than once.
>>
>>223763139
Well shit, now I'm hyped.
>>
>>223763421
Thanks Tom will you come to my birthday
>>
>>223763458
I knew exactly what was coming the second time and it still floored me. I cannot recommend this movie enough. Pay no attention to the critical discourse surrounding it and try to avoid getting caught up in the right vs left bullshit. It's that good.
>>
>>223763507
Strewth, mate, that depends where and when the party is. Will there be a barbie?
>>
>>223763139
>>223763458
I've decided to see it immediately after work in Odeon, as my local Odeon recently upgraded their sound system. It's also literally the last viewing I can see before it's taken away forever
>>
>>223763593
Godspeed. Try to see it in IMAX if you can. It will be the last opportunity maybe forever (unless they happen to do an IMAX rerelease which absolutely will not happen because it's tanking so hard and critics hate it).

I genuinely cannot think of another movie that has blown me away this much in the theaters. It might be the best performance of Tom Cruise's career. It's the final Warner Bros movie ever, and it feels like the end of an era.
>>
>>223763685
There's no IMAX near me, I've never actually seen a film in IMAX. Odeon will have to do
>>
>>223763861
Don't worry, I think with the upgraded sound system you will still be able to enjoy it tremendously. I felt the bigger IMAX screen elevated a few scenes, but watching it on a regular screen probably won't detract from the effect the film has on you. Plus, the soundtrack is one of the strongest aspects, so you're in for a treat.

I think once you've watched it, you'll instantly know the part that benefits the most from IMAX.
>>
There is only poster in this thread up to this point. Shill is really embarrassing himself …

Or on second thought, I think being in an almost empty theater made the experience more absurd. Every joke being met with total silence from the audience. The staff even had time to talk to us and could ask us what we thought of it and then try to figure out why the movie is flopping. The three of us did like it, by the way.
>>
>>223762242
So you'll've seen it 4 times before it's gone?
>>
>>223763139
think i might see it again in imax just for that. like just come in for the monologue and leave afterwards
>>
>>223762579
Some of the surround sound was really annoying. The water dripping and the clock ticking was really distracting and annoying.
>>
>>223764566
Repeat after me now:
>IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE
The water is dripping because the theater's roof has a leak
>>
>>223764572
I had no problem with the leak, just the sound. It was really distracting. It didn't have to be that loud. I've heard clocks tick and water drip and it's not louder than people who are shouting at each other and playing vids on laptops.
>>
You can hear the chatter and noises of the crew while they're on set. Was a nice touch.
>>
Rumors of it being a musical got my hopes up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-tI94IeXP0
>>
>>223764620
Not when it's so loud it distracts from the dialogue. The background noises were head-achingly loud.
>>

I really think it's going to become a musical at some point. It's practically already built for one.

Incoming Digger theory: Are there any real world (ie. non-play) scenes where there's explicit mention that Digger's drilling did, indeed, one-for-one cause/trigger an iceburg(s) or was that only a narrative from the play's script? We know that the real world in the film is weather ravaged, but that could simply be from regular climate change (natural or gradually introduced by man's activities) and not necessarily caused by a single, catastrophic, manmade event.

Unless I'm misremembering something, all I know is that, outside the play, characters would say Digger is responsible for our horrible current state, that he was a bad man, etc.; but did they ever come out and say, explicitly, that an iceburg crashed into Norway/Alaska? After all, even in today's real world, climate alarmists unironically say that oilmen, et al are "actively destroying the environment," so there'd be no reason to think that this attitude persists in the film's reality and the play's scriptwriter added the iceburg component for dramatic effect.
>>
>>223765179
>an iceburg *was broken off by Digger and crashed into...
>>
>>223762685
Replace digger with drugs and you have the original meme
>>
>>223763933
>>223765157
It’s literally just one guy that’s shilling it. It’s getting so annoying that at this point. I hope the movie bombs so hard Tom Cruise kills himself.
>>
>>223765297
Then he'll've had 1 bomb in 30 years, surrounded by endless $100+M films. There isn't a single actor that wouldn't kill for a record like that. He'll be fine and kys.
>>
>>223765179
I feel like you are onto something here. But, yes, the play director references Judy when Curtis and her are having their argument about the purpose of the satire.
>>
>>223765297
And I say to you in the Digger War you have a choice to make! Us and you or....us or you!
>>
>>223765338
You be surprised. Some people only need one single big failure to end it all. Tom is a very unstable person, I could definitely see him killing himself over this.
>>
>>223765390
But did she explicitly say that Judy was an iceburg? An environmental event called "Judy" could have been a hurricane that flooded coastal areas the same way NYC was flooded by Sandy in 2012. Keep in mind that Iñárritu said he first came up with the idea for Digger in 2015. From Wiki:
>Iñárritu first conceived Digger after working on The Revenant (2015): "I had an idea. Not a script, not a film, just a relentless, recurring obsession that has endured through all these years. I knew who this character was. I knew how he spoke, how he survived, how he seduced reality into agreeing with him. But it took me 10 years to do this film, because I wasn't looking for a story. I was looking for the right way of saying it."
>>
>>223765424
And you'd be insane if you unironically thought that he thought this auteur piece would be some global, box office smash.

>>
>>223765455
Nah, you are really over analyzing it. The Judy event would have been well too documented in the public to be depicted as something it wasn't. It would be the equivalent of 20 years down the line saying that Hurricane Sandy was cluster tornadoes.
Where I think you are onto something, is that Digger potentially not being the cause but due to his proximity and business, he became the scapegoat for causing Judy and the play could be filling in what occurred for the sake of satire because as we see with the bombing of Kremlinova, the play is willing to bend the truth and is not a 100% accurate recreation of the events.
>>
>>223762562
The surround sound turns the big speech into a spectacle. I was in a normal theater and was still mesmerized
>>
>>223765157
The movie as a whole is 7.8/10 typical avante guard artsy bullshit trying to be Kubrick.

The speech scene however is 11/10 one of the greatest monologues ever put to film. Anons who have seen it have come back literally shook
>>
>>223766116
>The Judy event would have been well too documented in the public to be depicted as something it wasn't.
Not entirely impossible. First off, it's a stage play about how the fossil fools destroyed the world, not a documentary. Secondly, the audience is there for one reason only: the cathartic anhero finale. Not a single one of them would have cared that Sandy was turned from a big storm into something physical that the army can drop bombs on, so the government can be depicted as lunatics who blow things up rather than trying to solve crises. A good chunk of them wouldn't have even been alive or out of diapers when the events occurred 30 years prior, but no one in the audience would have cared about the historical accuracy of the script. Even Kenny didn't.

Saw a digger theory that the pantry scene at the end was a hallucination by Curtis and not Digger. Basically Curtis believed his prayers answered because he was led to believe Hope was truly safe, via a near divine intervention (Kenny apparently being able to have full world coverage and eyes).

If you aren't the same anon, they do the director directly references Judy and points to crew members that lost family members, and I think even refers to Judy as a chunk of ice.
Like I said, Judy was real and the broader events that occured happened but it being a satire and their willingness to bend the truth, then it is plausible scenes like the morning of Judy, debriefing the president, going to the White House, etc. were all fabrications.
>>
>>223768873

>Incoming Digger theory: Are there any real world (ie. non-play) scenes where there's explicit mention that Digger's drilling did, indeed, one-for-one cause/trigger an iceburg(s) or was that only a narrative from the play's script? We know that the real world in the film is weather ravaged, but that could simply be from regular climate change (natural or gradually introduced by man's activities) and not necessarily caused by a single, catastrophic, manmade event.

This take is simply false. Yes, the events actually happened in the universe of the movie. In the scene where Curtis and the director are getting into an argument in front of the whole cast Curtis is complaining about the historical inaccuracies of the plane scene. He even says something as specific as "on the Thursday morning this was happening Digger wasn't on the plane." Before that the director mentions how there isn't a single person in the audience who won't know someone directly effected by the events the paly is describing, so obviously the things they are depicting did in fact actually happen. This is very clear cut.
>>
>>223768274
I 100% knew he'd say that, because I said that after my viewing.
>>
>>223768873
I am the same. And like I said, I don't recall if any real-world scenes mentioned that Judy was, indeed an iceburg caused by a drilling-related explosion. If so, then nevermind my hypotheosis. I never said an environmental catastrophe named "Judy" never happened, nor that said event did not result in deaths, suffering, etc., only that it may not have been an iceburg broken off by the activities of an oil company's drilling, because I don't remember such explicitly being mentioned. Not interested in the debrief, White House, etc.

I was in a little bit of an episode teaser trailer for game of thrones, for the seventh series, and I didn't see it played anywhere - maybe it was but I missed it.
kinda bothered me. there was also other stuff filmed which they said would probably be on the dvd/blu-ray, but I don't think it appeared anywhere.
had thought the teaser would since the head of photography was the one filming it, and it was his idea.
s07e04/5/6 teaser was a low view on the ground through the underside of a burnt wagon, and behind it you can see the legs of sole soldiers as they walk along after the battle, some smoke rolling across.
i imagined it must have looked pretty cool.

This movie is the one that finished me. It has finally forced me to admit that yes mass literacy is dead.

I used to hope against hope “maybe people are saying: they have a different interpretation of the film than me, so they are illiterate.” Just a cheap, ignorant insult to protect one’s own ego. But no, the basic structure of the film seems to be illegible to most audiences. How can we even talk about the movie when baby shit like “it’s a play within a play” confuses people this much?
>>
>>223771652
Digger genuinely feels like the movie that ended cinema. I don't see how Hollywood tops it. I don't see how movies can be sustainable as a legitimate medium after Digger.

It’s this generations dr Strangelove, it’s not perfect and up its own but it has genuine moments of brilliance on the screen. The sets are awesome and it’s a well acted movie, it’s not surprising it’s bombing but I am surprised it’s being shat on by critics

I still loved Tom’s characters partial obsession about the president and vice president not being allowed to be on the same plane because it defeats the whole purpose of the office

I had a good time watching this, then I slept on it and realized how fucking bleak and terrifyingly accurate it is
>The public clapping and cheering at over-the-top portrayals of evil, entertainment funded by the very thing they claim to hate

There's layers to this movie like nothing else in recent memory.

My favorite layer is how the sets are constantly dealing with water ingress from the disaster. It's such a simple and effective metaphor for how reality leaks into fiction, and how they are functionally inseparable.

I kept digging tonight. third viewing. there are some things i didnt notice the other times. I spent a lot more of this viewing trying to focus on Curtis/Digger more than anything else.

>Curtis seems to show his first clear sign of disapproval at the humor when they are together in his house in the meeting, around the time the preacher starts speaking in tongues.
>lots of small, amusing details when they are watching Judy impact in Europe in the war room, like one dude eating popcorn, and a moment at the beginning when Ganesh says "put up philadelphia, put up philadelphia" to show another fucking comparison
>Finally heard the general say "Gay niece" after he says "Gayness"
>noticed Kenny's hand has a tattoo of Da Vinci's Vatruvian Man
>people are already starting to clap and anticipate Digger's death even before it happens. thats the big payoff, moneyshot for everyone.

i guess the other that keeps sticking with me is the motif of all of the drama being a form of release for the audience. its just as the director of the play says, they have to laugh...or else....

this applies equally to the audience at the showing, as it does to the "audience" at the EU. Digger himself knows this -- thats part of the reason he builds up Ganesh, so that he can go out there and pump up the audience to allow them to release their impotent hatred on him, only for him to leave and get off scot free. But they release their energy. The audience of the play watches the movie, expdcting the satisfaction of diggers death, and then leaves satisfied. This is the same word Kenny uses. The key is not that they are happy, just "satisfied" with how things are now that they have gotten their release.

makes me think i should reread the poetics.

looking forward to my. 4th watch soon

People are saying Riz should get a best supporting nom but I think Jesse Plemons deserves it more for his speech to the cast and crew. He plays Kenny wildly different than Cruise plays Digger, yet both of their speeches have the same effect.
Something I noticed on my second watch was when we first see Kenny he has his button up shirt leisurely draped over his shoulder as if he is posing as an artist.

my favorite details is when Kenny is talking about what Digger does at the end of the play/his life, and dances around saying what actually happens, which makes no sense in-universe and serves exclusively to not spoil the actual real-world audience

During my second time digging, I focused more on Kenny. He's such an interesting character because he comes across as really strange and unlikable even before you find out he's a Rockwell.

When Kenny is talking about Fossil Fools, he says that he first saw it 15 years ago. If you pay attention to the billboard outside the theater when everyone is leaving, it's the 25th anniversary. He's like this deeply uncool loser who was 10 years late to the trend and was so desperate to feel a sense of belonging that he clapped and cheered at the fictional portrayal of his uncle killing himself.

It's very telling when he tells Curtis that his depiction of Digger is accurate due to the look of constant disappointment in his eyes. He's also Emma Rockwell's son, which is significant because Emma is the daughter of some Quebecois slut Cirque du Soleil dancer. It's like he's an outsider in his own family and can't decide if he wants approval or to get revenge, which I think is part of the reason why he says it doesn't matter if the play is comedy, drama, satire, etc.

Another thing that I noticed is that Curtis' daughter is named Hope. It's really simple, but "hope" is missing because of an extreme storm caused by Digger. The only way that "hope" can be found is by giving up "hope" to Kenny, who uses his Palantir network to locate her. I think this sort of relates to the idea of Digger having faith (kind of a stretch, but hope and faith are very closely related concepts).

Good post.
>When Kenny is talking about Fossil Fools
that's a great catch. i remember both of the numbers but i didnt put 2 and 2 together on that.

one other thing about kenny and their society that i thought about this time around. I totally forgot about this
When he is telling Curtis how he can track his daughter with just her phone number. Curtis is kind of just like, oh, just her phone number? Obviously Curtis doesn't really care because he is in panic, but man, it's wild to me that in this universe, he just gives the guy her phone number, and she gets tracked down with only knowing that. pretty creepy. And I infer that from everything else that we see at the film, that's just what people here are used to now.
>>
>>223775655
one thing I really liked about Kenny's character that is obvious but I just liked it
>he grows up afraid of the people who hate his family, and what does he do about it? He makes an all seeing eye cyber security surveillance company

After my first viewing, an anon said it wasn't her phone number that he asked for. On my second viewing, I paid attention, and you can see the numbers on Curtis's phone and it is a solid string of numbers without dashes. So I think you can infer that everyone has an identification number.

I didn't get why were they so afraid about the detours, currently we have flight trackers for that. I get the storm is severe but I wouldn't be worrying until the flight is missing for sure and my relative hasn't contacted for 24 hours.

Which implies global communications are disrupted and only Kenny's network is functional?
>>
>>223777214
Why would telephone numbers 35+ years in the future have dashes? We've pretty much already gotten rid of the parenthesese around the area code, and even the current dashes are often rendered as periods in much printed instances.

It is good. It’s a lot like birdman but has something to say beyond actor narcissism. I was hesitant because Inuburrito is a gay socialist but I was surprised because the satire had more truth to it than any movie I’ve seen in the last 5 years. It’s worth seeing in theater. Inspired by this thread I just caught the last showing at my local theater. There were two old no kings boomer ladies who were giggling a lot before the play reveal and they walked out perplexed. The theater was really quiet as the credits rolled. I had an actual “cinema” experience in 2026 imagine that.

Anyone else feel sad about this flopping? I haven't read one of the book it references but I don't get, I am not saying everyone should like it, I just don't get some of the takes people have on it beyond just bandwagon hate.

I kind of feel a bit pessimistic about art and film like properly.
>>
>>223778677
It's kind of a bummer but it's making about as much money as Bugonia and similar arthousey movies.
The critical response is a bigger bummer to me because that actually feels unique to digger
>>
>>223778711
Yeah, I mean this is an issue due to it's budget but the budget made it such an spectable. so economics...whatever, sad it flopped but the audience tracks with artsy and so on, serious real movies.

Critically, I do feel sad about it but I think critics are worthless, they have been wrong more often than right. I think history will look kindly on this film and Tom. He might not get the oscar and it's again...meh and whatever, but I feel he should. I really liked the layers between Curtis-Digger and the real Digger (or how he must have been) at times.
Came across during the firewall scene, talks with the president and ganesh.
Maybe it's that it's a more scathing critique of climate change than what everyone would assume.

Just like the pandemic, Digger did a lot of wrong calls. Being a fucking retard is a chief one. If someone is given the burden of handling most of the planet's oil, it's his deal to manage it safely.

During the pandemic, a lot of fucking retards avoided isolating and quarintine of hub cities. Authorities started rounding people up to non-quarintined concentration centers, and released them over legal matters without taking into account the biohazard fact. Then public health offices started to take beef on matters that didn't concern them, such as supply management and therefore started backpedalling on advice. Governments didn't take the health hazard as a serious threat, they kept flipflopping the economic consequence and acted pressured by their neighbors, they enforced lockdowns irregularly without military logistic support. Finally, they fucking broke and released everyone when the most lethal strains started to pop up. Vigilance became a game of bingo, as if anyone won from detecting a new case and doing nothing about it. It was a complete shitshow and millions died from it. Death is on the hands of everyone who held an office but there doesn't exist tribunals to judge this.

Digger is the same shit. Why does Digger make himself a scapegoat? Nothing happens if euros get fucked, they can't pinpoint digger to be the cause of years of global warming, and even if he could, he could simply fade to black and retire in brazil.

It's satirising handwringing climate change propaganda, moral outrage and the audience itself looking to be entertained. But it fails both because people are trying to work us off oil and we have a lot of regulation in place to prevent disasters from a system everyone recognises isn't stable.

the movie shits on climate fearmongering and how leftists feel good building satirical movies to laugh at whoever they want to blame, so you fell for it. there's literally a scene where a young black british woman is yelling at curtis telling him he's stupid for not understanding that the play is giga important for people to laugh at and feel better about the state of the world, and the play is the equivalent of elon musk buying his way into an SNL guest appearance

>I actually can't think of a single bad thing Digger did
Digger knew YEARS before anything happened that his oil platform was going to release methane, wether he understood completely what that would do or didn't doesnt' really matter, he didn't gave a fuck anyway, because the "experts" (that he hired) would only warn him, never stop him or expose him to the politicians (that he's colluding with), so he just kept digging.

Sadly, this positive word of mouth doesn't seem to be translating to tickets sold

Was thinking about how despite being one of the play scenes, the monologue cuts to phone camera footage despite that not fitting with the play presentation
Similarly the waiting room (where we see footage of the disaster) is in wide aspect ratio despite being part of the play
Is that to emphasize that those are some of the only real things we see?
