Because the PS3 went with Blu-ray, USB sticks improved storage really fast, and things like the ipod and Limewire was far more convenient than having to carry around individual discs, even if smaller.

>Mp3 players and the iPod were just around the corner
Not really, there was still 6-8 years where it had a theoretical room to grow. CD players were impossible to replace because everybody already used them, music CDs were everywhere, the major hardware issues were already solved and the new technology brought no ground breaking changes.
The early MP3 players were crippled by short battery life and low memory capacity. 1 audio CD ripped to mp3 translates to 100- 150 MB. Can't do much with a 128 MB memory card.

Bluray vs minidisc was never a thing. The mp3 had replaced all music distribution by 2001. “Both” (you) and “he” are morons.
>>
>>223783475
Sony pushed too restrictive DRM on it (at least initially) and blank media was expensive compared to blank CDs so for a large part of the format's life it didn't have the two big things CDs had going for them
>>
>>223783528
Zune should've won. I never bought one but had a friend in high-school who did and I used it for a week. Better UI, could hold Mp3, Mp4, WMA, had FM radio, wifi, and could connect to the 360 to play music.
>>
>>223783781
>Bluray vs minidisc was never a thing
I said mostly right. I have no idea why his included this as I agree. It wasn't a thing and is irrelevant. The rest is spot on as, as I said here >>223783667 I was in college at the time working on my comp scio degree and computers at that time still had 1.55 floppy drives and cd dries an that was it. Some of them has those high capacity magnetic disks I forget the name now, they were little cartridges, but the big issue for me was finding that I could actually store my class work on Some people had those re-writable mini disks and they worked but carrying them around in your backpack could easily scratch and damage them. USB sticks came out and I could save an entire semesters of classwork on them, EVERY class I was taking mind you. USB sticks, SD cards and external hard drives made everything else irrelevant

>64 MB
your average compact flash card and USB pendrive in early 00s:
>256 MB

>>223783865
>Yeah, but what capacity and for what price.

the first one I ever had was 256 and that was a massive amount at the time. More than enough for anything you would use it for. I dont know the price because I got mine fee but they were obviously competitive since they put everything else out of business

In a deterministic future, I will be a runner like Johnny Mnemonic and people will pay large sums of yen to run their data to ensure its integrity. Ai will will be scouring the net for anything of value and truth, the only way to get real data in the future will be through runners like me. The physical disk will come back by necessity.

Flash memory is in general less reliable than HDDs and optical drives.
If you think it's reliable, you are a fool.
Flash memory is very vulnerable wear if there are any frequent write operations, this is why SSDs were so bad in late 00s. Operating systems are always trigger happy when it comes to disk operations.
As for passive data storage, flash drives that are not used for a long time, maybe years, maybe a decade, will eventually degrade and get some corrupted data, it's how the transistors work.
I got some corrupted data on a 512 MB pendrive from 2007. I inspected it after 10 years, there was a copy of some old stuff, some PDF files got corrupted and impossible to read.
I also had a freak incident with a large compact flash card I used once for storage of low quality anime rips. A dozen of files got corrupted, and after an inspection with a hex editor I found out the corrupted files got extra block of zero bytes at the beginning. I was able to compare them against normal files from a HDD backup, you see.
