I got this new recipe from the Arab marketplace near my house and was pretty excited to try it. I spent about an hour making the dish and then when I sampled the finished product it was as bland as bland could be. I spent another 40ish minutes pulling out everything I could from my cupboards to salvage the thing, and eventually I added some of the wrong kind of yeast and turned the whole thing from bland to completely unpalatable. An entire evening down the drain that could've been spent watching tonight's episode Metamorphosis... well, there's still time for that.
See you in an hour or so.

Written by the great Gene Coon, another masterpiece to expand the galaxy's past out more. Zefram as a man out of time with the time he created is a really interesting way to characterize him, that "totally parochial attitude" Spock observes. As interesting as it is, I'm glad that it doesn't take precedent over the romance between him and the Companion, which is such a glorious thing once she has integrated with Commissioner Hedford and is able to experience the full breadth of human emotion. Not to imply the previous 150 years that we get a glimpse of weren't also very charming. All those scenes of Zefram standing at the edge of his backyard and letting her energy cone envelope him are so beautifully shot, and the choice of filming the bottom of a partially-filled kiddie-pool to make the unique pattern gives her a sense of innocence. Though this choice does end up clashing a little when she gets angry, turns a deep red, and starts choking out Kirk & Spock.
The closer to the episode being "hey, what about that war she was gonna stop?" is so hilarious, how cavalier Kirk is over just finding a replacement to handle things. However, reading the Memory-Alpha article afterwards just now, that crack Spock makes about Bigamy is even funnier.
Another interesting thing from M-A that I took note of but didn't really think over: the way they shot Cochrane's first appearance from over a ridge and slowly approaching the Galileo II was so incredibly well done. It made this planetoid feel like the largest world they'd been to (among the ones that weren't shot on location).

A show that says "fuck" over 200 times is not Star Trek.

Cursing and the use of modern slang invalidates Lower Decks as a Star Trek show as it breaks perhaps the most fundamental of all of the Roddenberry Rules. Ironic that its fans (braindead pee-pee-poo-poo retards) say that it "gets Trek" when it's actually the opposite.

Lower Decks is derivative parody trash, failing both as a Star Trek show and as a comedy. If you enjoy this show, you're probably the kind of faggot to eat vegan burgers and collect Funko Pops.

The red uniforms worked in the context of WoK being a naval adventure pastiche, but I simply can't picture Starfleet officers going about their normal business exploring the galaxy in those stuffy outfits. It doesn't help that the shows never bothered to design new uniforms for the eras between the TOS movies and TNG and just reused the reds with minor alterations.

It's too easy to blame the production change because it's so obvious, but I don't think it impacted the show as greatly as many claim. It was more a culmination of subtle tonal shifts that were already evident in season 5. I actually like season 6 for the most part and think it has some great eps, and I will unironically argue that the climax of the conspiracy arc completely works and would've made a great series finale and an even better movie than the one we got. S7 has some highlights but that's the year where it's really evident that the writers are out of ideas and are practically begging to get cancelled.

Working on my script where Kira Nerys eats Romulan pussy back during the resistance. Eventually going to be a two parter with different time jumps. When the Romulans join the war and setup an embassy on the station, Nerys ends up eating Romulan pussy again, and we just kind of bounce back and forth between the war and the resistance to tell the story. Then it's just a matter of waiting for AI to be ready to render it all out for me.

The entire concept is VOY, though the entire concept of VOY is the original and Lost in Space. The opera house is just the wormhole aliens again, the skinjobs are just changelings. New Caprica is just the dominion capturing the station again. The episode with the cylon virus is Hugh again. Probably some others I forgot.

The Pegasus arc, despite being directly from the original, has a lot of parallels to VOY Equinox. Also Baltar is just Dr. Bashir but white.

So when they go to the Engineering Decks (as seen in the climax of Court Martial or The Changeling, to place the 2 versions used in TOS side by side) are those in the Main Disc or the Underhull (or whatever the proper terms are)? I know this is a chart for the Motion Picture versions of the ship, but it got me thinking about how things are laid out on an original Constitution Class. Like, is the Vertical Intermix Chamber the same as the Warp Core just by a different name? What about those rooms with the Dilithium Crystals, as seen in The Alternative Factor? Are the crystals just everywhere on the ship, or are they specifically only on the Engineering levels?
That also makes me wonder, why is it that they talked about the Crystals so much in season 1, but now that we're in season 2 the main thing to go wrong with the power is the Antimatter Pods. Where are those located? How do all these things link together to feed power into the Warp Nacelles? Have the writers planned it that much in depth yet or are these just recurring terms for a system that was retroactively cobbled together once we get to later seasons/series? It didn't occur to me now how much more important this stuff is than understanding the hierarchy of Starfleet Command since this is something that's being constantly dealt with yet not given nearly as much attention.
>>
>>223811253
The dominion war was acceptable compared to the risk of the Romulans to think they could influence galactic politics with bombings
>>
>>223811399
>the Underhull (or whatever the proper terms are)
"Star drive section" back in my day, and yes that is where engineering should be. IMO the warp core should always be dead center between the nacelles, but it's always shown much further forward for some reason.

As to the crystals coming up a lot in season 1, just something the writer's didn't really think about yet. They spent a lot more time thinking things through with the TNG technical manual, but writers just ignored all the rules at will and they never really went that in-depth with it again.

It actually sort of works within canon because Voyager established that Starfleet had some vague knowledge of the Borb before TNG but kept it top secret. Originally it was supposed to be rumors from aliens on the fringes of the federation but mysterious icemen from the 22nd century could fit in that too.

The later look is more streamlined and sophisticated, but I always thought the early look seemed more sinister and oppressive. From an outsider's perspective of architecture, it's probably so the rear-facing hangar bay has enough room. Easier to just extend the pipes forward than to fudge the entire layout.
>TNG technical manual
Another book to add to the wishlist. Good to know that there's someplace that has everything in some semblance of a working order, but I'm just as happy to throw that out the window as the writers presumably must be whenever it becomes necessary to put the story at the forefront - another place to apply the evergreen MST3k Mantra.

>>223811399
Incredibly complex story this go around. The murder mystery into medical drama, into the most under-duress situation Kirk's ever found himself in: bleeding out in the captain's chair, struggling to protect a ship filled with Ambassadors from 114 planets from a completely unknown threat, and while his First Officer and the Vulcan Ambassador are both in surgery. The moment he pulled the "dead in the water" trick I thought it was gonna be the Romulans falling for it again, but Spock revealing it was the neutral Orion pirates playing all sides against eachother to reap the profits was a welcome surprise.
All the new species showing up was cool. The golden midgets, the sexy violet lady, the guys who look perfectly normal aside from those giant Andy Warhol wigs, and of course the Tellarites & Andorians. Those Tellarite masks have terrible eye-holes, but the rest of it is alright. Gav is a bit of a stock-role, but it works out well here since it's not asking too much of us. Oh yeah, and Dilithium being back at the center of this half of the plot was funny after I just said they had been neglecting it.

Continued
>>
>>223813607
To the main point, this is probably the most interesting examination of Spock's two-natures yet, mainly for what it doesn't say. I thought that his decision to remain in command due to the outstanding circumstances is the same sort of choice Kirk or any other human at the same level of Duty would've made, so his own mother blaming it all on his biology must've hit him even harder than it seems. Similarly, I thought that Sarek saying "He behaved logically as the situation demanded, there's no need to thank him." at the end is probably the greatest compliment he could've made, since that's what Spock was so worried about - wanting to appear truly Vulcan in his father's eyes. This is made even better if you take into account the possibility that Sarek overheard Kirk's plan to trick Spock and said it anyway, because even if his son didn't have the complete set of information, he still behaved as logically as he believed possible. DC Fontana, I don't know if you considered all that when you wrote it, but that's a fantastic job.

>>223813661
I wouldn't say nutrek's reflection of the world gone to shit is a conscious choice, thoughbeit. I don't give any of the new writers enough credit to have that level of awareness. Some of them are still writing the show as a futuristic utopia, when they're not inserting stupid shit like retconning the Eugenics Wars to overlap with the Ferguson Rallies or shoving Section 31 everywhere. Just look at how bad SNW or the pre-timeskip seasons of STD can be, and those are set during the golden age of galactic exploration.

If NuTrek is a reflection of anything, it isn't societal as much as cultural. What is really being reflected is the decline of Hollywood, the same sort of atrophy that you're seeing across the broad in the entertainment realm.

It's just bad writing -- a lingering symptom of the nepotistic walled garden approach to creative roles that has dominated Hollywood for decades. The fourth or fifth generation showbiz kids are so sheltered and live lives of such unmitigated privilege that they are like an unrelatable alien species trying to write human drama. They don't understand anything but quips and poisonous irony.
These people don't want to write about utopia because they already live utopian lives in their wealthy closed circles where they want for nothing and basically have no worries.

I get the idea behind the premise and Q/Guinan is somewhat understandable although I would not have gone down that road. I think S2 falls apart as soon as it become present day bullshit with no connection to Star Trek. The contrived sci-fi Borg/Soongh plot didn't help either.
I think PIC is very interesting when you consider the series as three independent season long stories and each manages to suck in its own way. That's the only positive thing I got from that piece of fiction.
