Just decided to start a Harry Potter thread for fun, name any plot holes in the series you can think of.
>>
>>223794687
why didn't they change Anakin's last name if they wanted to protect him?
have him go by Dursley
>>
>>223794687
not a plot hole but I just watched the first 3 movies again recently and stylistic shift from 2 to 3 (new director) is jarring and terrible, like a parody of itself already. wtf were they thinking?
>>
The only fighting harry ever does is just make the other guy fall back a little bit and/or their wand flies out of their hand instead of actual damaging blows to their body, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I thought in a fight youre supposed to hurt the other guy. Imagine a spell that makes the other guy's arms dislodge from their shoulders, or a spell that turns the other guys blood into glass or sand or something. anything at all.
>>
>>223794775
That does confuse me. Especially since Avada Kedavra is supposed to be an unforgivable evil spell that only the evilest of wizards came up with, but by killing standards it's pretty damn tame, basically the magical version of euthanasia. It'd be like if a serial killer wanted to kill someone he decides to do it through euthanasia and not cause too much pain, like if the wizards were so evil wouldn't they make Avada Kedavra more bloody and brutal as a killing spell? Even that Sectrasemtra or whatever it was called spell in Half-Blood Prince was worse since it actually slashed you and caused you to bleed. Like wouldn't Death Eaters wanna use/invent that spell since it causes more pain than Avada Kedavra?
>>
>>223794687
This one and Quirrel are the biggest ones. Dumbledore is le super genius man with 11/10 perception, and got fooled for an entire fucking year?
The time turners themselves don't bother me, but they're treated as this incredibly dangerous and secretive artifact. So... we give them to 13 year olds who want to take extra classes in school.
Love potions should be as illegal as the unforgivable curses. I don't see how it's any different than imperio fundamentally.
>>
>>223794833
yeah a forbidden curse should summon cenobites or something
>>
>>223794892
I get that they were kids books and they couldn't have anything too bloody, but at least mention that the Killing Curse actually does give you agonizing pain in the last few seconds of your life rather than just kills you instantly.
>>
Why couldn't Dumbledore come up with an arrangement where Harry could stay at the school all year instead of going back and getting bullied by his notoriously shitty family that tried to stop him from going to hogwarts multiple times?
>>
>>223794843
>Love potions should be as illegal as the unforgivable curses. I don't see how it's any different than imperio fundamentally.
Women are the one’s making them. Simple as.

>>
>>223794923
imo avada kedavra should be a spell that kills your soul
like if you get hit with it you're dead inside, just a living husk
kinda like you got blowed by a dementor
it would up the evil without the blood and gore
bonus: you can now kill those annoying fucking ghosts with it

All the plot holes in this franchise steam out of the fact it's a children's series with a baseline that only kind of make sense as long as the main characters are children. How does the Wizarding community remain secret from the rest of the world when apparently literal ten year olds put at risk their secrecy on a yearly basis? Why are they so ignorant of the modern world? They literally don't travel to a different world, shit just happens in secret. Some times they do magic shit in front of normal people and it's okay because normal people can't even percieve magic, but sometimes they need to take precautions or else they are exposing the secrecy of their magical society. Hell, most kids are half-bloods, means they are constantly mingling with non-witch people, again, how come they are so ignorant of normal stuff or how come normal people aren't supposed to know about the witches existence? Adult Harry is an adult with up to 5th grade level education because fucking Hogwartz don't teach regular subjects, they have "potions" instead of chemestry, but the rest of the world runs on science not magic. The school don't make sense as part of a larger world, their whole setup doesn't make much sense, quidditch too don't make much sense, bad guy isn't threatening because he's constantly defeated by a literal gradeschooler, and magic is just learn magic words and say words and move wooden stick around. I'd keep complaining but the whole thing boils down to; this series was only ever okay when it's for little kids, the main characters are kids solving whodunnit cases in what is essentially a halloweeny version of a private school, once it moves past that scope it's wattpad fan-fic tier writting through and through.
>>

Why didn't he just rape Voldemort?

>>
it's been a while so i can't fully explain this
but in the first book, Hagrid borrows his flying bike from Sirius Black
in the third book, Sirius Black is believed to be a murderer
now, this wasn't long after Harry's birth, so i guess Sirius wasn't a known 'murderer' yet.

but it's odd it just goes unmentioned, and Hagrid keeps the bike. like it's not an outright plot hole, but i think Rowling just used a name in the first book then reused it later on to imply a connection that wasn't planned.
there's a lot of strainin' to do some explainin' whenever there's a
>why didn't they just use <item/spell> to <solve problem>?
type questions, whereas the smarter move was to leave them alone.

also not a plothole but just stuff like do Scottish characters need to travel to London to get the train back up to Hogwarts? Lupin was scared Harry's boggart would turn into Lord Voldemort, no other kids are scared of the big bad evil wizard whose name they won't even mention...?

Some times they do magic shit in front of normal people and it's okay because normal people can't even percieve magic, but sometimes they need to take precautions or else they are exposing the secrecy of their magical society.
i'm fine with this in a way. e.g. the Prime Minister knows about magic, sometimes wizards are careless and people just dismiss it. sometimes they wipe Muggles' memories, but a lot of it is probably just weirdness like
>i swear mate, i saw some fat balloon lady floating over Surrey last week.

the story starts out with wizards in funny hats celebrating Voldemort's defeat and telling Vernon Dursley even mugglefolk should be pleased. they fucking SUCK at keeping the world secret, but it's in such small doses it barely matters.

locations like the Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley, and Hogwarts are isolated to the wizards behind magic barriers and things. at least in the movie, Hermione takes her muggle parents to Diagon Alley while she's shopping for school supplies. Petunia Dursley knows her sister was a witch, etc.

basically anyone could probably blow the whistle on the whole thing. i see it like the Masquerade in the World of Darkness. there's a whole supernatural world going on under people's noses, they have an agreement to keep it secret,

besides, it's the 90s. people weren't walking around filming everything yet. tabloids DID run all sorts of nonsense fluff stories, and nobody is going to believe a schizo website 'REAL WIZARDS EXIST!!!'
>>
>>223794753
The robes and uniform change always cracked me up. Not only is it strange that a wizard school founded in medieval times uses official unforms conforming to modern muggle clothing styles using suits and ties, but they actually change them every few years for the most minor of changes. Like imagine being a Hogwarts student starting another year in the 1993-1994 school year and you have to go through the effort of getting a new uniform because some random people running the school decided that they really wanted the school uniforms to be a darker shade of gray.
>>
>>223794753
Yeah, I can't believe how popular the third one is. Is mediocre like everything it followed. The muggle clothes sucks, the color sucks and the sound design is insanely bad. Compare it to the moving tree scene from the second movie, the sound is awful in the third.

>>
>>223795933
My school uniform changed 3 times in the time I was there. Jumper to blazer to new logo on blazer. UK schools just do that when they become trusts/charities and pass around management.
>>
>>223794753
It's not even "darker" writing-wise, in fact it seems to take itself less seriously with all the lame jokes it tries to make, with obvious pauses for laughter from the audience. It feels like an utterly generic YA film most of the time.
>>
>>223795933
Well in the books all the students just wear plain black robes and presumably nothing else besides underwear. The only students with any sort of house affiliation on their robes are prefects.
>>
>>223794833
The point of Avada Kedavra is that it requires concentrated malice to achieve it's effect, which is singularly killing someone with no other utility. You can't really use it in any other fashion than deliberate murder
>>
>>223796076
>malice
Not necessarily malice, see Snape killing Dumbledore (spoiler alert), but definitely intent.
>>
>>223794833
The other forbidden spell is the cruciatus curse, which is an unimaginably painful but non-lethal torture that death eaters use before casting avada kedavra for the killing blow. I always wonder about that bomba spell Dolores Umbridge cast to blow up the wall in Order of the Phoenix, like can you cast it on humans and just gib them? That sounds more like what a wizard would do. Of course wizard duels aren't as flashy and interesting as they could have been. This is from the same mind that made like 1 school for the entirety of Africa.
>>
>>223796074
Since film is a visual media, I'm not surprised that plain black robes just didn't work, and so they invented the uniform. I like what they did in the early video games, where it was a black robe but had the respective colors and house emblem on it, that's what I think should be canon.
>>
>>223794687
When I rewatched DHP1 I realized where the fuck did Harry get that mirror from? Only to google and apparently it was gift from Sirius. But desu the whole idea of Harry conveniently not opening the Christmas present that would’ve saved Sirius is incredibly retarded. The movie should’ve just tagged it to Dumbledore’s Will, since the other piece was linked to his brother anyway. Instead Harry just has it out of nowhere.
>>
>>223796014
Hogwarts was a state school, run by the Ministry, I seriously doubt the Ministry would care enough to be changing the uniform too often. I think the uniform idea only works if it's a very recent idea in Hogwarts history and they only change it every fifty years when a uniform just gets too outdated and enough students complain that they finally design a new one.
>>
>>223795589
I like to imagine that Dumbledore knew the location of the Chamber from Myrtle all along and he was just letting the attacks happen as a sociopathic way to test Harry and give him combat experience.
>>
>>223795589
>>why did no one except Harry hear the gigantic snake living under Hogwarts?
He was the only one at Hogwarts with snake speaking ability.
>>
>>223794833
Other spells can be countered or healed, including Sectrasemtra.
>>
Dumbledore gives points.
>>
>>223795933
>suits and ties

in the books they just wear robes. the films added ties, then the third one just did away with robes entirely.

but yeah as >>223796014 said, even state comprehensive schools had uniforms that changed. our tie design changed when the school got a new emblem, we had ribbons on our blazers that corresponded to the year, the sixth form used jumpers instead of blazers (but kept the ties).

it would actually make sense if the uniforms advanced for later years. like O.W.L. students got a shawl or something, and by the time they were taking N.E.W.T.s, they got their first pointy hats to represent coming of age.
>>
>>223795850
>Hogwarts are isolated to the wizards behind magic barriers and things. at least in the movie
>Hermione takes her muggle parents to Diagon Alley while she's shopping for school supplies
Growing up, there were a lot of people that prefered the movies over the books, precisely because the movies made their world seem more consistent, the book had more details but they also seem a bit goofier and like, intented for slightly younger kids than what the movies were aiming for.
>>223796074
>Well in the books all the students just wear plain black robes and presumably nothing else besides underwear. The only students with any sort of house affiliation on their robes are prefects.
Like this, people remember the aesthetics and tone from the movies while the books are actually a bit sillier, like wizards not wearing pants and the like. They'd look a lot goofier if they actually stuck to how they are described in the books.
>>
>>223795589
>>why didn't Fred and George notice Peter Pettigrew on the map?

weren't they just using it specifically to avoid Filch and the other teachers at night?

besides, even if they were snooping on Ron, did they know who Peter Pettigrew was?

>oh Ron's in the common room with 'Peter Pettigrew'. must be a first year he's chatting with.
>>
>>223796555
>oh Ron sleeps with 'Peter Pettigrew' every night, our brother must be a gigantic closeted homosexual
>>
>>223796511
>the book had more details but they also seem a bit goofier and like, intented for slightly younger kids than what the movies were aiming for.

i preferred that tbqh, at least for the first two.

i mean they're essentially comedies, a bit like Roald Dahl books. kids can get their bones turned to jelly or eat snot sweets or whatever, and they're completely fine later on.

there's always the genuine threat of death, but it goes from monsters trying to eat/bludgeon children to death and that's fairytale high jinks, to dark wizards using the Crucio curse and that's serious business.
>>
>>223796581
there's that too. maybe they DID notice and just didn't know how to bring it up.

come to think of it, you could totally blackmail a ton of pupils 'hanging out' in the same toilet cubicle, or meeting behind the broom sheds together.

Not really, they have a school board, which Lucious was part of, that decided things like who would be Headmaster, the Minister of Magic himself could do nothing but stammer when Dumbledore was removed from his position in CoS

why would they be looking at ron on the map at night? Even at home?

>I get that they were kids books and they couldn't have anything too bloody, but at least mention that the Killing Curse actually does give you agonizing pain in the last few seconds of your life rather than just kills you instantly.
That's because the scariest thing to a british hole is a gun so she gave the wizards the I cast gun spell. Don't know why it would be unforgiveable in america though. I suppose it would be a wizard felony for bringing it into the magic school there, that's an avada kedavra free zone.
>>
>>223794833
Didn't they say there was a big explosion when Voldemort or whoever used it in front of muggles in the first book or something?
>>
>>223796555
>did they know who Peter Pettigrew was?
Ironically they should have because to everyone Peter famously "died" a martyr to the point of their giving his mom awards for bravery. If they knew about Sirius Black, they should also know Peter's name at minimum.
>>

>Didn't they say there was a big explosion when Voldemort or whoever used it in front of muggles in the first book or something?
No the house blew up when the spell rebounded on Voldemort.

I'm thinking of Peter Pettigrew and Google says it was "a powerful blast spell". That sounds more eviler and powerful than euthenasia spell.

From the fight between Harry and Voldemort in goblet of fire, can't we assume that the killing curse steals your soul and keeps it in the casters wand? Doesn't seem very nice.
>>
>>223794687
For being the biggest baddest dark wizard Voldemort didn't do much aside from gaining a shoddy lichdom state just to shoot up a school. What was he going to do if ran into Israeli muggles who deal with actual demons, and blood sacrifice.
>>
>>223794687
why didn't mad-eye just get voldemort's rags off?
>>
Those stupid every flavour beans. It is specifically mentioned that they are the most popular candy. You're telling me that people are dying to try, again and again, a food product that could potentially taste like vomit? More than any other candy that could possibly exist in this magical world?
>>
>>223797331
>From the fight between Harry and Voldemort in goblet of fire, can't we assume that the killing curse steals your soul and keeps it in the casters wand? Doesn't seem very nice.
The later use of the Ressurection Stone answers that question, also because the Dumbeldore that Harry talks to after Snape kills him is implied to be his soul. So they really were just echoes of the people Voldemort killed, how that works is undefined because it was never meant to be fleshed out.

>>
>>223797444
For one, there are only so many first year Gryffindors so one extra name in the dormitories should be noticeable. For another dude was also sleeping in the dormitories

Gred and Feorge stay away from Ron because he's got a fucking inferiority complex a mile wide.
>>
>>223797465
>he's got a fucking inferiority complex a mile wide.
Somewhat understandably, not everyone has 5 brothers and a whole childhood of hand me downs
>>
>>223797463
Man, I didn't even know all the names of my classmates in my own years during school, much less the ones younger than me. I don't really see why they'd bother paying attention to all the names of Rons classmates enough to remember whether they'd seen one in particular or not.
>>
>>223797253
How famous was it really though? Lots of people surely died and got posthumously awarded that somebody who was like three at the time wouldn't remember. Harry only even finds out about it because he overhears Fudge explaining it to somebody older than them.
>>
>>223797523
There are maybe 8 new years that came with Ron, they absolutely would notice a name they never saw before in a place nobody else should be

>>223794892
"Forbidden" curses can be pretty much anything. Sectumsempra is more brutal than Avada Kedrava. The reason Avada Kedrava is so bad is there can be no question to the intent. It can't even be something you compel someone else to use. Fiendfyre is basically a fire demon with a will of its own if you arent careful. That's a way worse death than Avada Kedavra but you dont get instant sentence to Azkaban because it could have been an accident or something. A lot of curses are a mystery because if anyone knows them they might cast them without realizing what they're doing so almost no one knows them. Harry didnt even know what sectumsempra did and he cast it just fine so a balls melt off spell probably does exist.
>>
>>223794753
I wonder if it would have been less jarring if Michael Gambon didn't die and his replacement wasn't so much worse.

>>223794833
Its unforgivable because its unquestionable in intent. You cant cast it and not mean it its literally not like a gun at all. It literally fuels itself off malevolent intent. They even say if you try and dont really mean it doesnt work so someone who uses it regularly is bad fucking news and needs to go. Even doing it once is bad, its not even really a defensive spell, its purely murderous.

When they are having a magical fight they pause in-between spells and shit with no logic as to why they can't just keep machine-gunning spell after spell at a motherfucker. Like if they had to recharge to use an offensive spell or something that would make some kind of sense.

Not having the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort go on longer with cool uber-powerful shit was a total ripoff. The same as Thanos versus Strange got cut apparently.

I just want to see a good magical fight between uber-powerful wizards will modern effects and we always get gyped.

Lord of the Rings was so lame and gay with that shit I don't even know where to start. A couple of uber-wizards who just wind up throwing each other around with telekinetic shit with their sticks? Jesus, you couldn't come up with a bigger letdown if you tried.

Uber-wizard faced with fire demon. Yells, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" Get fucking fucked for fuck sakes.
>>
>>223798058
FWIW i agree.

it's not the worst recasting choice, but Richard Harris was like a sweet old man bumbling about, Michael Gambon was more loud and kept his Irish twinge for some reason.

i was sceptical about the new American bloke (and he might also die before the series finishes) but he looks and sounds the part.

I liked Harris and prefer his portrayal, especially with that sort of wily side underneath the sweet old man personality, but he really was just a bit too old to be really reliable for the full length of the series, and probably shouldn't have been cast to begin with, if they wanted consistency.

The point of Gandalf the White is that he returned, not as merely am advisor or guide, but as an actual pro-active leader.
He's the one who brought the reinforcements to Helm's Deep and who held Minas Tirith while Rohan's army arrived.

Also keep in mind magic in LOTR is influenced by Tolkien's view that power is inherently corruptive.
In the War of the Ring specifically the Valar chose to act in a far more subtle way, sending Gandalf and the other Maiar to guide, because they once did the opposite, all the Valar and Maiar came crashing down on Morgoth using the full extent of their powers, and this resulted in countless deaths and the continent of Beleriand being destroyed.

>>
>>223799137
Only as far as the first movie is concerned. Harry didn't actually do anything to save the Stone, he just got himself knocked out before Quidditch. He is far more instrumental in the main plot in the later books.
>>
>>223799123
That was a movie thing.
In the books the ghosts couldn't touch anyone, they just scared away all the Mordor troops in the boats until they all jumped and drowned, and Aragorn then used those ships to bring reinforcements from southern Gondor.

There's an expectation that a wizard would eventually figure out there's something wrong and get help or be helped, any prevention of that would just simply be kidnapping. You're still "you" whilst under the effects but you're basically drunk. Everyone around you would notice it.

Imperiatus takes away any agency, you become a passenger in your own body. It's near impossible to resist long term for the vast majority of wizards (Harry briefly disobeyed a simple command in a minor way and only through injuring himself, this was considered exceptional). It's also incredibly difficult to spot so you generally remain under it until it's dispelled.

A mother who throws herself in front of the baby with the full knowledge it will kill her. Not to mention she's shown as incredibly kind hearted and there's a good chance she has a level of love that only a small number of mothers have, on top of being a powerful wizard.

It's not especially unlikely that this was the only time Voldemort ever encountered something like that. The fact it's known by Dumbledore and his allies also implies that although it verged on a miracle what happened, it's also not unthinkable.

You see Molly completely overpower Bellatrix just because she *almost* killed Ginny.

It's ultimately just a case of circumstances. Hopeless situation, no fighting just a desperate sacrifice out of pure love by a powerful wizard. No one else is ever put in these exact circumstances. Remember he only cared about killing Harry and had promised to Snape to spare Lilly which was the only reason she was even alive to perform the sacrifice. In normal circumstances he's directly kill the parents first, then decide what to do with any children.

>>
>>223799452
>You see Molly completely overpower Bellatrix
Yes and I love that scene, it makes sense to me that Molly would push herself beyond her means in that situation. IIRC she had already lost one of her children at that point and just went barking mad.
The Snape and Lily thing does make some sense and I can accept it fine for the initial defeat of voldi but his actual defeat in the last book felt stupid and contrived, partly because of muh love magic
>>
>>223799458
I think Moody would fucking love guns if he were allowed to. I could see him carrying a revolver just because no motherfucker alive would ever see it coming.
>>
>>223799460
Ultimately not much you could do, you were prophesised to die so a bunch of shit would take place regardless. Telling Dumbledore about the horcruxes you know about, how the Basilisk and sword of Griffendor can destroy them would likely mean he would stay alive for the battle of hogwarts though.

There's a non-zero chance that Dumbledore would kill you with them. It's left really vague if he ever actually cared about Harry or was just manipulating him.
>>
>>223799444
But that's the point. Dumbledore even explained it to Harry, its all about the choices you make. Harry and Lilly and so many others chose love. Voldemort never bothered. He's selfish and shallow. He literally COULD have any other death eater kill Harry. But hes petty and vindictive and needs to do it himself because anything else would ruin his self esteem
>>
>>223799491
There's absolutely no reason he wouldn't have guns. They're mechanical and chemically propelled, no electronics or advanced technology needed. Chemistry still works or they wouldn't have potions or alchemy. Moody would be strapped at all times.

The fine print of the elder wand narratively just let's Harry not be a murderer because voldemorts own spell kills him
Also the reason Dumbledore pushed Harry was because once he hears that Voldemort took his blood he knows that Harry can fight Voldemort without losing. Harry gets an inkling of this before he goes into the forest. He realized he was marked for death and Dumbledore was pulling strings to minimize casualties
>>
>>223799613
He wasn't evil but he was 100% focused on his end goal at all costs. You could argue that he lost all his genuine love when he got his sister killed and the rest of his life was atonement. >Snitch gives your team over 9000 points and ends the game
>if you don't catch the snitch presumably you keep playing until you die of exhaustion or something
>No rule for what happens in you catch the snitch at the same time
>Allowed to indiscriminately assault other players, so every game should just start with one player obtaining the ball and then the other team unceremoniously beating the shit out of them to get it, then that person comes under attack. and so on, until everyone is dead and that person wins
>extra players should be trying to kill the other team's seeker and goalie
>if they score a few points against you in the meantime, who gives a shit, you'll win when you catch the snitch anyway
>what if someone who isn't a Seeker catches the snitch
>if you're a Beater, can you hit it like a golf ball at the Seeker?
>can you hold onto it and just hand it to your Seeker?
>if not, what happens if you accidentally run into it or accidentally hit it and your Seeker gets it? Do you suffer any kind of penalty?
>If the magic mirror shows what you desire, when people get addicted to it, does it start showing them looking in the mirror?
>if it was taken away wouldn't their greatest desire be the mirror, until they actually got it again, so would they see the mirror when they finally got it or would that change before they could see it?
>why did Ron a boy going through puberty at the time see himself winning the Quidditch Cup and not Herminie's tits?
>this goes back to seeing the mirror question. He wants to win the Quidditch Cup so all the witch chicks will want to suck his dick, so it's a means to an end - his real desire
>If you got two mirrors and faced them at each other and stood between them what would you see?
>One mirror should see Harry with his parents, so wouldn't it think he already has his parents, and show him his second desire,(probably Hermione's tits again), or would he see infinity parents? When obviously that's wrong he only wants two

If the Sorting Hat just lets students pick what house they want, wouldn't the two top houses get stacked and Hufflepuff not receive anyone? Or must the sorting be equal among the four houses and the children whose blood is most pure get to decide where they go and the mudbloods don't?
>>
>>223800009
A lot of the later writing is 100% her trying to piece together all the stuff from the early books when she hasn't really planned things.

That said, she writes a bunch of detective novels, she clearly enjoys that part of writing.

Follow up question: what if I most desired something like the Marauder's Map? Is what I'm seeing the map itself? Can I read it like a map, is the information shown on the image presented to me by the mirror accurate to the current information on the map itself? If so, what's the latency on the transmission of that information?

Could I use the Mirror of Erised to see the answer sheet for an upcoming exam? Could I use it to see the combination to a safe which it is my heart's desire to open?

Not really a plot hole because this is kind of specifically one of the first things that Harry asks when Dumbledore reveals the whole Horcrux thing (in the book, anyway) and Dumbledore says that Tom was too much of a raging narcissist to dirty a piece of his soul putting it into anything that wasn't at least marginally as unique and special as he considered himself.

The ones in which he drivels and sweats about people like Dunsany, Walter de la Mare, ER Eddison, Mary Renault (!) etc

They were able to hide a Philosophers stone in the mirror. I'm sure a projected Marauder's map would show accurate information. It would just be reversed.

Crouch is a much better actor in the books. And Dumbledore did suspect something was up with Quirrell, he just didn't think Voldemort was actually inside him.
>>223795589
>why did nobody investigate Myrtle properly?
2 people did, Harry and riddle.
>why did no one except Harry hear the gigantic snake living under Hogwarts?
Parselmouths are very rare
>why didn't Fred and George notice Peter Pettigrew on the map?
Yeah this one is odd. Possibly they were just never concerned with looking at other people that weren't nearby teachers or something.
>>223795782
>why didn't fake Moody just give Harry a Portkey immediately?
He needed the rules for portkeys to be lifted, ordinarily it has to be sanctioned by the ministry and only Dumbledore as the headmaster can create them without any pushback.
>how did Dumbledore not recognize fake Moody?
Crouch was a good actor and studied his target or something
>why did the Portkey take Harry back to Hogwarts?
That one is clearly explained, all portkeys toggle between their two locations.

The book clearly says this isn't the case, but it kinda was the case in the first book

All the most ardent supporters of Voldemort who would do such a thing got locked up. The rest were unironically scared of Harry, or at least Dumbledore's retaliation.

>>223795750
They're scared of Voldemort but he's not their chief fear, remember all of them are too young to have actually met the guy. I think in a non children's book series a boggart would be much more horrific and turn into dreamed up horrors beyond comprehension, but you know.

He wanted to not love Harry as it would make it easier to focus on stopping Voldemort and preparing Harty to be sacrificed, but grew conflicted about the whole thing and grew to love Harry anyway. It's why he could never tell him that Harry must sacrifice himself, and its why Harry has the figure out everything on his own and choose to sacrifice himself at the end. Ironically, it might not have worked if he'd told Harry he had to sacrifice himself, because a less mature Harry would have tried to fight it more strongly and perhaps even hated Dumbledore for it.

That happened in book 2. She planned it early on, the diary was always supposed to be a horcrux and the fang/venom was always supposed to destroy it.
>>223800392
Yes, that doesn't mean she didn't have a rough idea of the ending from the first chapter. Just because the last books aren't standalone doesn't mean that she didn't do that. And I would argue, with more exposition like in the early books they could have been more standalone.

True, but Buffy did influence a bunch of things after. And I don't think whedonism started with whedon, he just popularized and put it in everything until all his proteges started spamming it. I think Rowling arrived at a similar place for subversive humor by the last book, not that she directly copied Whedon. And too her credit, she used it sparsely.

Because they're playing chess with attack spells and have to think their tactics through once the moves they planned are done.

I mean this is just over a decade after Wizard Hitler 2 (not to be confused eith Muggle Hitler 1, who did nothing wrong), who explicitly preached blood purity and Slytherin Uber Alles. Those Slytherin students who aren't orphans because their parents are in Azkaban were raised by ex-Death-Eaters who avoided jail time by ratting or chickening out and taught the same shit from early childhood. Obviously for that particular generation the majority of them were on the side of the series' baddies by default.
