I hate Forrest Gump.

Jurassic Park

>>

american psycho but its pretty much just a streamlined version of the book, no real changes

The novel for Jaws and the novel for Jurassic park are worlds better than the films. I like both films but they are meant for a wide audience, unlike the novels which were horror and science fiction novels that weren’t widely recognized until the films.
>>
>>223799744
The Jaws novel is awful compared to the film
>>
>>223799595
Same. Worst garage I have seen in my life and I love film. Don't get me wrong, it has good scenes scattered about so it worth YouTubing but the movie as a whole was total and complete garbage, like it was written by someone in middle school

Mama always said hate is like tryna save a coon from dangling' off a cliff. You should probably just let go before it puts you over the edge.
>>
>>223799758
It’s almost a scene for scene adaptation of the novel except it goes into more of the science of sharks and has more expose.
>>
>>223799702
>Jurassic Park
Only book I read of those was this and if you didn't like that you're not into literature. AI does say that people are divided book v movie, so it's polarizing and speaks to how well the film was made, I enjoyed the film too (but not better than the book)
I do have a great imagination tho, so that needs to be factored in

The movie
>A masterclass in suspense balanced with awe, magic, and family-adventure wonder.

The book
>Much darker, scarier, and gorier. It reads like a scientific and philosophical warning about corporate greed, arrogance, and chaos theory.

No the fuck it ain’t. The characters alone are nothing like what’s on screen and they have zero chemistry in the book that’s more concerned with Brody’s wife being a whore.

The novel is Stephen King excusing his abusive behavior which the film clearly states was already there from the beginning and the hotel didn't corrupt him, he was always a shit persob. Maybe King should lay down the booze and coke and face the consequences of his actions instead of blaming external forces?

Godfather is actually one where the movie is more popular

Book
>Sales & Reach: Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel was a major bestseller, spending 67 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list and selling over 9 million copies in its first two years.
>Depth: It includes deep character backstories, world-building, and minor side plots (such as extended Hollywood and medical subplots) that were left out of the film.
>Reception: While praised for its gripping crime saga, critics often view it as a pulpy page-turner rather than a high-art literary masterpiece, unlike the film which is treated as high art.

The movie adaptation of The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made in cinema history,

Movie is much more popular but:

The Book is More Critical/Niche: Bret Easton Ellis's 1991 novel is critically acclaimed as a satirical masterpiece, but it is notoriously difficult to read—often described as dense, repetitive, and brutally graphic. It is widely read by literature fans, horror enthusiasts, and people seeking a deeper dive into the source material, whereas the movie reaches a much broader general audience

The book is vastly more graphic, long-winded, and extreme with its violence and torture scenes.

The American Psycho movie is accessible, fast-paced, and significantly tones down the gore to make it a watchable theatrical experience.

Critical View: Fans and critics generally agree that the book offers a deeper psychological descent into Patrick Bateman's mind, while the movie is a sharper, more entertaining piece of satire.
>>
>>223799867
>>22380005

Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 debut novel Fight Club is widely praised for its fast-paced, visceral style and sharp satire. Around 218 to 224 pages, making it a quick, punchy read.

The book
>Darker, More Cynical Tone: The novel features a much bleaker and more ambiguous ending where the narrator wakes up in a mental institution (which he believes is heaven) rather than watching buildings explode alongside Marla.
>Pacing and Detail: Readers often praise the book's sharp, minimalist prose and internal monologues, noting that several subplots and darkly comic details (like Marla's mother's fat) didn't make it to the screen

Why the Movie is More Popular
>Star Power: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton
>Streamlined Appeal: The film compressed and sharpened Palahniuk's narrative, making Tyler Durden charismatic and iconic rather than purely dark and satirical.
>>
>>223800379
Even Chuck says the movie is better, he was trying to write a love story. Some of the plot points were made more coherent in the movie. For example in the book, the fat they got for the soap was only from his mom who kept it in her fridge for some reason.
>>
>>223799575
>>223799702

The book
>The novel is much wilder, darker, and more vulgar. Book Forrest is 6'6" and 240 pounds, uses profanity, has savant-level math skills, works as a professional wrestler, and even travels into space with NASA and an orangutan named Sue
>the book has a much harsher edge, different character arcs for Jenny, and language/content that differs sharply from the PG-13 film.

The movie
>The film softened the character, making him a sweet, innocent, and lovable

While the movie is a warm, nostalgic, and emotional drama, the book is a bawdy, cynical, and madcap comic romp of wild adventures
>>

Peter Benchley’s novel, Jaws, was a major commercial hit before the movie came out, selling over 20 million copies worldwide and staying on the bestseller list for 44 weeks.

The book
>The book focuses heavily on subplots absent from the film, including local mafia ties, town politics, and an affair between Ellen Brody and Matt Hooper.

The movie:
>The movie makes Chief Brody, Hooper, and Quint far more heroic

Ellen Brody
>Book: Has an affair with oceanographer Matt Hooper
>Movie: Supportive wife, affair subplot removed

Matt Hooper
>eaten by the shark
>survives the shark attack

Quint & the shark have different deaths in the book vs movie

>Every Kubrick adaptation.
the common exception to the rule is Lolita (by Vladimir Nabokov) or The Shining (by Stephen King)

The Shining (1977) by Stephen King is widely regarded as a classic masterpiece of modern horror and one of his finest novel

• Emotional Depth: Unlike the movie, the novel gives far more attention to the tragic, complex descent of Jack Torrance, rather than portraying him as already unhinged from the start.

• Character Focus: Wendy and Danny are richly developed, and Danny's psychic abilities ("the shining") are explained with much more nuance.

• Atmospheric Tension: The history of the Overlook Hotel and its malevolent influence on Jack's struggles with alcoholism and a bad temper create a slow-burning sense of dread.

• Book vs. Movie Differences: Many readers note that the book is much more emotional and scary in its climax than Stanley Kubrick's famous 1980 film adaptation.

The original 1989 Ghost in the Shell manga by Masamune Shirow is a foundational pillar of cyberpunk and posthuman science fiction with Genre-Defining World-Building. It redefined speculative fiction

Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 anime film Ghost in the Shell (based on Masamune Shirow's manga) is a cornerstone of science fiction that redefined cyberpunk and deeply influenced global cinema, philosophy, and digital-age media

they are completely different creative works with distinct tones, pacing, and goals

The Original Manga (Masamune Shirow, 1989)
>Tone: Playful, technical, clever, and frequently light-hearted or comedic.
>faster-paced, more humorous,
>Focus: It features multiple episodic cases, deep dives into cybernetic mechanics, political intrigue, and a much more multifaceted personality for the Major (including her sense of humor and private life).
>Best for: Readers who want a richer, more dynamic look at Section 9's day-to-day operations and prefer the original blend of hard sci-fi and quirky 1980s manga humor.
>Choose the manga if you want a broader, funnier, and more technically detailed sci-fi work

The 1995 Movie (Mamoru Oshii)
>Tone: Grim, philosophical, slow, and atmospheric
>dialed the tone down to a cold, philosophical thriller
>Focus: It adapts only a small final portion of Masamune Shirow's original manga. It strips out most of the humor and technical banter to focus heavily on an existential crisis regarding what defines human consciousness and a "ghost" in a cybernetic body.
>Best for: Fans of deep cyberpunk philosophy, moody visual pacing, and classic sci-fi world-building.
>Choose the 1995 movie if you want a sleek, moody, and deeply contemplative cinematic experience.

Major Kusanagi:
>original Manga: Expressive, witty, hyper-capable, and more grounded in everyday banter with Section 9
>film: Introspective, stoic, spiritually searching, and detached.

Blade Runner - 1982 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, an adaptation of the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick

1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
>it fundamentally redefined science fiction
>Broader Thematic Scope: The book is a broader and stranger work, weaving in dark satire
Tone: It features a surreal, paranoid, and darkly comic tone

Blade Runner (The Film)
>The film fundamentally redefined the aesthetic of modern sci-fi. It is a landmark of science fiction cinema that redefined visual storytelling. It established the visual language of cyberpunk. It heavily influenced decades of subsequent sci-fi media (such as Ghost in the Shell). Cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth utilized unmotivated, unconventional lighting sources (like xenon searchlights) and dense atmospheric effects (smoke, neon, rain)
>the script heavily shifted the tone from the novel's dusty, post-apocalyptic themes into a rain-slicked, high-tech neon noir aesthetic
>Ridley Scott stripped away much of the novel’s subplots
>Tone: It operates as a moody, slow-burning sci-fi noir that prioritizes visual storytelling, atmosphere, and existential melancholy over the book's chaotic world-building

they are distinct artistic experiences that excel in different mediums and focus on different themes.

Choose the novel if you want a deeper, weirder, and more philosophical exploration of morality, religion, and society.
Choose the novel if you prefer sprawling, philosophical, weirdly humorous sci-fi that dives deep into social satire, strange theology, and ecological collapse as

Choose the movie if you prefer a moody, visually iconic, tight sci-fi noir thriller
Choose the film if you prefer a tightly focused, iconic, and visually monumental piece of cinema centered on mood

I'm sure he also had ZERO to say about censorship and deplatorming from, say 2016-2024 or thereabouts. But suddenly became VERY concerned about it recently

Or any of the intrusions on freedom and privacy that have been going on were just fine, but suddenly FLOCK CAMERAS are the end of the world...

They were right to remove the Scouring from the theatrical versions. It doesn't work for the finale to a cinema experience where emotions need to be coming down towards the ending. After the big climax, you can't ramp back up to yet another conflict. However, it wouldn't have been difficult to include in the extended version or dvd extras. They already filmed a crapton more footage of various less important things, plus already had all the sets, actors, and wardrobe. Just have the gang return to the Shire to find a decrepit version of Saruman controlling things. The hobbits rally their friends and fight to retake the Shire. Probably could have been done in 20 minutes and would have made fans eternally happy. Instead we got Saruman vanishing with no explanation in the theatrical and Saruman getting knifed and falling on a spike in the extended. Both terribly lame. Adding the Scouring and changing the ghost army to humans and the trilogy would be perfect.
>>
>>223802280
The movie is barely a 1.5 hours long. Of course it couldn't include all that stuff. It needed to present Major as seriously troubled so Major could have an arc and reasoning to explain the choices made in the finale to join the Puppetmaster.

William S. Burroughs's 1959 antinovel Naked Lunch is a cornerstone of postmodern literature, the Beat Generation, and 20th-century counterculture. Its significance spans structural innovation, legal precedent, and radical thematic critique
>Obscenity Trials: Due to its graphic depictions of sexuality, drug use, violence, and taboo themes, the novel faced severe censorship and obscenity trials in the United States (including Boston and Los Angeles)
>Legal Turning Point: The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court eventually overturned the ban, ruling that the book possessed social and literary value. This landmark decision marked one of the last major literary obscenity trials in the U.S. and became a watershed victory for freedom of expression and the arts

Totalitarianism and Control: Through surreal, nightmarish satire—embodied by figures like Dr. Benway—the novel explores how governments, bureaucracies, and chemical dependencies subjugate the individual

Underground Influence: It deeply shaped the Beat Generation alongside works like Jack Kerouac's On the Road and Allen Ginsberg's Howl. It also left a massive footprint on punk rock, visual arts, experimental music, and cinema

The title—suggested by Jack Kerouac after Ginsberg misread Burroughs's working title (Naked Lust)—was described by Burroughs as representing "a frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork"—a naked, unflinching revelation of the harsh realities and decay hidden beneath society's surface
>>

>>223799882

The film
>transforms William S. Burroughs' notoriously unfilmable, fragmented novel into a deeply personal study of the creative process
>David Cronenberg's 1991 film adaptation of Naked Lunch is not a direct translation of William S. Burroughs's 1959 novel. Instead, it is a creative, hybrid work that blends pieces of the book with the author's biography and the psychological genesis of writing the novel itself.
>It folds in elements and characters from Burroughs's other writings (such as Queer) and fictionalized avatars of Beat generation figures like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac
>audiences usually find Cronenberg's film to be more of an impressionistic companion piece than a direct adaptation
>The movie embraces Burroughs' definition of the title: "that frozen moment in time when each of us gets to see exactly what's on the end of our fork"—representing an unvarnished, often terrifying confrontation
>>

>It is a well-documented and widely discussed perspective that The Shining serves as Stephen King's deeply personal confession regarding his own battles with alcoholism and parental rage. King has openly stated in interviews and his memoir, On Writing, that he did not fully realize at the time that he was writing a semi-autobiographical character in Jack Torrance. He has described the novel as a way to process his buried, agonizing fears about his capacity to hurt his children and his mounting substance abuse
>Regarding his substance abuse, King did eventually face those external and internal forces. After his family staged a massive intervention in the late 1980s—confronting him with a trash bag filled with his discarded beer cans, cocaine spoons, valium, and marijuana—King got sober in 1987 and has remained sober ever since.
