>they seem cooler than the guys who lost.

Except in most of the "Spanish" campaigns against city-states, kingdoms, and empires (hell, even often against the less organized chiefdoms and tribes) in the Americas was really mostly fought by armies from other local states who allied with the Spanish to take out their rivals or capitals to gain or hold onto power and status.

For example, the Conquistadors who fought with Cortes to conquer Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital (who mind you, these conquistadors weren't even really "Spanish" at the time, since Cortes had been charged with treason and other Conquistadors had been sent out to arrest him) made up what is quite possibly less than 1%, maybe even less than half a percent, of the total forces: The rest were soldiers from Tlaxcala, Texcoco, etc. Kings and other officials from those and other states like Xicotencatl II, Ixtlilxochitl II, Xicomecoatl, etc were also often calling the shots as much as Cortes was or were actively maniipulating him

Even 20 years after Cortes, in expeditions all the way up into Kansas in the central United States, most of the Coronado expedition were Mesoamerican soldiers (likely Mexica from Tenochtitlan/Mexico City, Tlaxcalteca, Purepecha etc), and even the Conquistadors in the expedition were still relying on Mesoamerican armor rather then European armor due to it's scarcity and expense in the Americas, see pic

>>223815698
I mean, he usually didn't. Staffs weren't a major part of the regalia and ornamentation used by Aztec rulers (though some other Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya had royal scepters). There are some depictions like in the Codex Tovar where different kings of Tenochtitlan are holding what looks like an atlatl dart or arrow, this is also seen in the Codex Ixtlilxochitl with the depction of Tocuepotzin(?), but I don't think it's depicted anywhere else major?

Scepters and staffs were def a part of the regalia of different deities though

Depends on the context and the country.
In some countries they always larp as conquistadors (or even better, as Europeans that came much later like in the case of Argentina) because their natives didn't amount to much.
In other countries is a left vs right thing, or a class thing, or they're genetically native but identify more with the Spanish culture because they were assimilated so long ago, or they never were fully assimilated.

In Latin America they almost always emphasize their white heritage cause whites and light skinned people are at the top of the totem pole in Latin American society, while injuns are looked down upon as lesser.

its not as easy, for example in mexico the president, jewish, is anti spanish and is left wing, but there is a communist guerilla in the south of the country that, after the president said something that i dont recall, maybe asking for an apoligy from spain, and the communist guerrilla took a prospanish stance

Then all their kids name their kids stuff like Coyotl and Ixcatzin, stuff so beanered out that nobody knows how to pronounce it so they end up being called by their middle names, those usually coming from family from their grandparents generation, Jose, etc. I guess the point of this is that American culture at this point is such endless propaganda even families that have been here for less than a full generation fall into the same racial traps as everyone else.

Depends on the country. "Latino" or latin-american is not a single monolithic group. I'm of mexican descent and mexican culture is a mixture of indigenous and spanish cultures with certain aspects leaning in one direction and other aspects in other. For example traditional mexican food heavily leans indigenous but has some obvious influences with spanish and even arabic cuisine. Other areas like religion are obviously spanish(european) with some indigenous sprinkles.
Worth pointing out that mexicans from mexico are not the same as mexican-americans or "chicanos". Also mexico is a fairly big country and each region has various ethnic and cultural leanings. No different than the USA with stereotypical californians compared to appalachians
>>
>>223819257
Initially I was confused what culture they were even attempting to depict at the start, living in straw huts with no signs of agriculture. I assumed it was meant to be some isolated tribe of hunter gatherers, outside the Maya civilization, and the film was going for a Conan the Barbarian noble savage type of deal.

The depiction of the city, with literal mounds of rotting corpses, paired with the quote the movie starts with, kind of did give me the feeling that Mel Gibson thinks they Maya got what they deserved.

He is so full of shit.
The myth that they had all this "help" from their "native allies" is something that's been going around a while, and mostly false, but he takes it to the next level and claims the natives did everything.
No, they did next to nothing. The Spanish fought and defeated every native group they came across. Their "allies" made no difference, they won with or without them.
This retard made his whole thing this, and managed to get it this wrong. I'm guessing he majored in 'latin american cultural studies' or some crap like that and that is where he got all this from.
>>
>>223822582
Yeah, nope. The aztecs were hated by so many other tribes and civilazation and Hernan's alliances with other tribes are well documented with help of "la malinche" who helped him secure alliances. Hernan did have various skirmishes with local fighters where he and his men completely obliterated them, which help cement his military superiority. But he did in the end get a lot of support from many other natives.
>>
>>223822670
You aren't contradicting anything I said.
Cortes fought EVERY native group he came across, often multiple times. As a condition for peace, he would demand food, laborers, livestock, etc and in some case soldiers. Which he mostly stuck off to the side guarding their baggage while the Spanish did the fighting.
It made no difference how many Indians they put in the field against the Spanish. After the Noche Triste, when the Spaniards were all starved, injured, exhausted, wet powder, and their horses drowned, an brand new Aztec army of 50k formed up to face the thousand or so Spanish survivors. And the Spaniards cut through them like butter.
Indian warriors were of no relevance in the campaigns, and nobody rushed to ally with the Spaniards, they all tried to kill them.

They have a couple scenes but they mostly play a background role.
The whole premise is that the Spanish and English kings are competing as to who will get a claim to the Fountain of Youth first.
Blackbeard is afraid of death so he wants to get to it first, so does jack but he and Barbarossa want to get the Pearl back from Blackbeard.
The story focuses mostly on Jack, Blackbeard, and totally-not-a-knock-off-Will-Turner and the fish he wants to fuck.
It's been a while since I've seen the movie tho, I think I'll re-watch it next weekend.

Nahuatl was one of the official languages of New Spain and those names were common back then among Nahuatl speakers.
After the independence, and for around 100 years, native languages were marginalized so they wouldn't have been so common during the 19th century, but after the Mexican Revolution in 1910, and especially after José Vasconcelos' work as Secretary of Public Education in the early 20's and his philosophy of the "cosmic race", the Amerindian heritage became an important part of the Mexican national identity so some Spanish speakers started to use names in Nahuatl too.
A lot of the time the use of those names was kinda larpy anyway, kind of like the Greek names that were used all over Latin America around the same time, but 100 years ago some people were in fact using those "fake aztec names".

Part of it was that they simply couldn't:

EX: Mesoamerica was, by some estimates, as densely populated as major parts of Europe at contact (and while the Andes and esp. other parts of LATAM were less dense than Mesoamerica, they still had more people than you'd think), and even moderate-ish estimates for the Aztec Empire have it more densely populated than Spain then (Tho IDK how reliable the Spanish population estimates I saw were, I can only gauge the reputability of the Aztec estimates)

Even conquering the region as they did thanks to diseases and alliances with local states was kinda a fluke (to an extent: some notable European influence over the region was inevitable after they found the Americas when they did) that just managed to snowball in Spain's favor, which is something Spanish sources themselves discuss at the time (they were terrified that if a a mass revolt of the states they managed to acquire occurred, it'd be unstoppable), so trying to outright eradicate the native population rather then just colonize them would have been a basically impossible task, and frankly counterproductive: If it was clear Spain's goal was genocide rather then assimilation, then local states would have no reason to ally with the Spanish, depriving Spain a gigantic majority of the manpower, resources, intel and infrastructure they relied on to staff, supply, direct and launch campaigns with and from.

IDK if there's serious scholarly work arguing this, but Spain encountering giant empires, kingdoms etc with inarguably sophisticated artistic, political, social, and intellectual achievements, huge cities etc also may have been a factor, enabling the Spanish to develop more respect (and many Spaniards DID respect them, see pic, tho obviously that didn't stop Spain from still killing and enslaving people at times) for Indigenous groups than the English, American etc colonists did, who encountered less complex societies

That was the beginning of a lengthy and bloody war to control Peru though (fought mainly by natives, since it was in many ways a continuation of the civil war that was in progress when Pizarro arrived). It wasn't as simple as checkmating the Incan Emperor.

What about the Aztecs though, specifically their belief in sacrifice? From what I saw on /his/ it was absolutely insane, not just the human killings but it was part of every aspect of life. What is it with the Iberian Peninsula constantly getting mogged by single British guys?

Not the British army or Navy, but just one British guy with one ship?

The Spanish sent an entire Armarda to try to invade Britain of some shit, but their whole fleet was fucking sunk by Francis Drake and his one little ship. He was so cocky he even set his slave trader mates boat on fire and sent it towards them as a warning. A whole boat, that sent the message "we don't even need all our boats to dispose of shit on our shoe like you".

To add insult to injury, he even finished his game of boules on Plymouth Hoe before he went to destroy them as he was pretty sure he could beat the Spanish nonces with one hand tied behind his back.

Then for good measure Drake went to Cadiz, "synged tbe kinge of Spain's beard" in person, and took most of the treasure the Spaniards had looted from the Aztecs.

The whole of Europe was laughing at the Spanish, constantly getting fucked in the arse by Drake.

Then the Portuguese spent millions in todays money setting up exclusive trade with Japan, to get it taken from them by William Adams who got shipwrecked there, became a Samuri and told the Shogun what massive twats the Portuguese were, setting in motion them getting expelled from the country.

>The Spanish did all the fighting. Their allies were basically irrelevant. He is acting like the Indian "allies" did all the hard work.
isn't the "indigenous allies did all the fighting" thing common knowledge? iirc during the war on Tenochtitlan it's like 1% spaniard, like less than 200 guys after the noche triste, and during the expansionist wars in aftermath it's the same thing. There weren't enough Spaniards to go around for all that. These are big cities they were fighting, like what you'd find in the classical mediterranean era, (I just looked it up tlaxcallan is the size of lime 6 pompeiis.) It's sort of like 40k where space marines are super OP but there's only like 1000 of them per space marine chapter, so it's obviously unrealistic to think they'd be conquering planets, and the lore just kinda ignores that they're spread too thin.
>>
>>223843185
>isn't the "indigenous allies did all the fighting" thing common knowledge?
Common bullshit, yes
> iirc during the war on Tenochtitlan it's like 1% spaniard, like less than 200 guys after the noche triste, and during the expansionist wars in aftermath it's the same thing.
It was all Spaniards doing all the fighting. Remember, they had no "allies" to start and went up against huge cities and armies.
As I keep saying, if they had allied soldiers with them, they mostly had them off guarding the baggage while the Spanish did the fighting.
It was all Spaniards after the Noche Triste and they destroyed a giant Aztec army like nothing
At some point, academics decided to push this bullshit about the "indian allies" being oh so important because it made the mexicans look bad to accurately show how badly they got continually defeated by small groups of Spaniards. It's just the PC partly line, same as saying 'ackshually without black women we would have never gone to the moon' and all that.

Dude this is gigantically wrong. When the spanish started making contact they were not instantly attacked. They were fed and sheltered. They were also not the first europeans to land in the americas.
Cortes' conquest was calculated. Yes they had superior technology, warfare knowledge, etc.... but the illusion that they just landed and started single handedly slaughtering hoards after hoards of natives is just that, an illusion.

Just wait until he reads some actual history books—instead of the nonsense found on some shitty blog—and finds out that they lost that war. He’ll learn that, following the incident with the Armada (which was caused by unusually severe storms), they suffered nothing but massive, humiliating defeats for fifteen straight years, right up until the peace treaty—a treaty they themselves described as a "national disgrace." He’ll also learn that Drake himself—after being humiliated, and acting like the cowardly pirate he always was—tried to attack isolated, defenseless settlements in the Caribbean, only to get his ass kicked so thoroughly again that he ended up dying like a dog from bloody dysentery, hahahaha. Or how entire towns—like Mousehole, Paul, Newlyn, and Penzance—were burned to the ground during land raids, much like how, two centuries earlier, the Castilian admiral Fernando Sánchez de Tovar set fire to the entire south of England (even sailing up the Thames to torch the outskirts of London and plunder to his heart's content for an entire week).

Cont:

While I just said "IDK if there's...scholarly work arguing [the Spanish finding sophisticated civilizations made them respect and be less willing to displace or wipe out Indigenous groups like the English, American etc colonists did]", I DO know for a fact that said respect was a factor in the personal motivation of various Spaniards to convert Mesoamerican people:

Cortes outright says that "[the Mesoamericans] live more equally than any other...which we have...come across]" and that "many...would very quickly [convert]" as a result if missionaries were sent. And various friars remarked that their Mesoamerican students learn scripture, theology etc faster and more enthusiastically then their Spanish students (Sahagun, see pic, even noted the rapid success of native students at Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco so greatly terrified some Spanish priests who initially laughed at the idea of Indigenous students being taught, that said priests tried to then shut the school down), and lamented that pagan priests and adherents were similarly more devout with their religion than local Spanish Catholic priests and congregation were

This ties into the next reason, which is that despite the focus on the greed and ambition of Conquistadors and various colonial officials, or on slavery (or things close to it), inquisitions etc happening; many Spanish conquistadors, officials, and especially friars were genuinely interested in converting people to Christianity,

Spain lost nearly all it's massive gallons and warships to one Brit, who was laughing at them the whole time.

England had a tactic of floating burning old ships laden with explosives, that were otherwise going to scrapped, towards the spanish fleet as a weapon. In their what-about-ery the desperate spanish count these fireships as lost English ships, which is like getting killed by a headshot and bragging that somehow you won because you stopped that bullet by getting killed by it. Also the British ships were much smaller and more maneuverable, than the big spanish warships so taking out 1 bloated spanish ship was the equivalent of taking out about 10 plucky Brit boats. Look it up, because I'm sure they don't teach you that.

Chinks do. Which is hilarious. It's not even some thing they ate because they were poor starving peasants. They saw some weird barely edible creature and their instincts kicked in I guess.

Also by "I suspect local rulers, officials etc were only that influential in the Cortes campaign", I specifically meant rulers and officials: local mesoamerican ARMIES were still extremely influential in later campaigns, I'm just not sure the leadership was like they were during the Cortes expedition

I am also happy to post some of the uncut versions of quotes in the pic in >>223832240 or their original Spanish, Italian, German etc text if necessary to prove they're not taken out of context, if you specify 2-3 you want that for

Conversely, a more cynical explanation (and which may tie into my first point regarding there simply being too many people around to even make complete genocide or displacement a option) is that Spanish colonialism had extracting economic resource and goods was it's end goal, and in order to do that, it's beneficial to have a larger labor force or slaves

As far as I'm aware, part of the goal or idea was that the Spanish would use Indigenous labor to get those resources, be it as explicit slaves (though using Indigenous people as slaves was outlawed after a time), or being put in positions not that far from it. But some of those reforms/laws passed to protect Indigenous people, and really more than that, the 90-99% population collapse from diseases exacerbated by political instability, warfare, displacement, drops in sanitation standards etc over the 16th century (pic, tho i'm iffy with some specifics of these estimates) made using Mesoamericans as the main labor force impossible

By contrast as I understand it, British, American etc colonialism was much more focused on just acquiring land then goods/resources to sell and to enrich elites, so there wasn't as much a need or incentive to keep local peoples around, as I said there were simply less people in what's now the US and Canada then Mexico, Guatemala etc to begin with, etc
