If I’m going to be honest it’s probably the 1990 Tom Savino directed remake of Night of the Living Dead. That’s always been my favorite zombie movie because it’s nearly identical to the original except that they put even more emphasis on the fact that the zombies are utterly harmless and the protagonists could have just left the farm house and walked right past them at any time, but instead they all died because they couldn’t work together. That plot element is in the original too, but they really shove it down your throat in the remake so that it’s an unmissable and unambiguous message. I do love that movie where Gary Cooper plays a professor of slang and falls in love with a showgirl though too, based OP.

What'd he do to you?

I always find him funny. He has this goofy face, he always looks he's pulling a prank, like he stole something from you and is waiting for you to realize.

As an actor he's solid. He's one of those old school actors who pretty much play the same character in every film but you always welcome them because you like them...

...also it doesn't help that Ozu seemed to really like him in the role of a mild mannered middle aged man so that's all he plays in all of his films haha

Nothing at all. It's just a silly bit...

I also think it's funny that he was already playing weathered old men and family patriarchs in his 30s and kept doing it until his 80s. The man really had a particular market completely monopolized.

How do you particularly define « mise-en-scène » ?

I suppose I understand the concept in theory but not so much in practice. It always seems interchangeable with less tenuous notions such as blocking, composition, spatial relations between shots, etc. when mentioned by a critic.

Just watch it. It’s pretty good. If you dislike it, then maybe you’re Bergman and jelly. Ingmar Bergman didn’t like it because it was shot in his country, and found it vain and not worth a fuck. I disagree with him wholeheartedly. It’s a fun movie that has an original soundtrack by Chantal Goya. Her, Francoise Hardy and Sylvie Vartan are my favorite pop stars from the 60’s.

>Hawks gave Virginia Mayo a miniversion of his routine for beginning actresses, sending her to an empty soundstage and making her scream to lower her voice. “That didn’t work for me,” Mayo said. “I just got hoarse. I just had to try the role the way I ordinarily would.”

>But Hawks lavished most of his attention on the actress’s looks. “He liked every woman to sort of resemble his wife,” Mayo declared. “I had to wear clothes that were patterned after his wife Slim. And even my hairdo was patterned after Mrs. Hawks’ hairdo.” Receiving little concrete direction from Hawks, Mayo watched Ball of Fire numerous times and privately rehearsed her scenes in imitation of Stanwyck. Nor could Mayo sing her own number, which was dubbed by Jeri Sullivan. Hawks considered Mayo, in a word, “pathetic.”

>Heading out of the private gambling salon, he noticed his acquaintance Albert (Cubby) Broccoli dancing with a very attractive young woman he’d never seen before. Afterward he took Cubby aside and, in his drawling, completely casual manner, asked, “Who’s the girl you’re with? I’d like to meet her.” A strikingly beautiful twenty-one-year-old, she had flashing eyes, a ready smile, and, at five feet, eight-and-a-half inches, a model’s physique. After a couple of dances, Hawks pulled out his usual line—“Do you want to be in movies?”—and was startled when his companion replied in the negative; it wasn’t often that such a dazzling young woman making the rounds in Hollywood had no interest in becoming an actress. Regrouping quickly, however, Hawks, instead of asking her for a real date, invited her for a swim at his house the next day.

>Although he was never pushy, Hawks could barely contain himself, and after their swim date, he invited Slim back another day for lunch. On this occasion, he trotted out his three kids and announced that he was married. Slim was shocked at this revelation, and when Hawks explained that his wife was mentally disturbed and currently incapacitated in a home, Slim momentarily considered bolting. But she was already hooked, enchanted perhaps not as much by the man she had known only for a few days but by what she called “the package,” which included the “career, the house, the four cars, the yacht—this was the life for me.” Over the years, some would privately call her a well-bred, high-class gold digger interested in social climbing above all, but Hawks didn’t see it that way. For him, she would be the perfect trophy wife, the ultimate “girl” who would join him in the things he liked to do and always be beautiful and sporty and his. The things she couldn’t already do, such as shoot and read scripts, he would teach her. And all his friends would be impressed and jealous.

Stanwyck as Sugarpuss O'Shea (that name!) is great but not really Hawksian (it's a key plot point that she starts out using the professors but ends up falling in love with one - same reason why I can't include Jean Arthur from Only Angels Have Wings since she couldn't/wouldn't play that part the way Hawks wanted her to).

To those two fellas that were interested to know about Ashley's Perfect Lives: didn't really care for it.

The music was pretty weak, ranging from very basic piano backed by drum machine to virtuosic piano playing, either way mostly uninteresting. The text, on the other hand, was good, but his delivery of it is often so fast and soft that it was hard to understand, sometimes even being drowned out by the music. That delivery, however, was my favourite thing about this, and the few moments of real intensity come from it instead of the music.

There's also a lot of very corny 80s video effects that makes it all feel quite silly and corny (at times it even reminded me of those Residents early 90s CD-ROMs).

And it's looong. You really feel those three hours; by the last forty minutes i was already out of it and hoping it would just end.

Overall, my biggest problem is that it completely lacks in the drama and emotional rawness those two pieces of his that made me want to watch this in the first place have, so if you're gonna watch it, don't go in with the same expectations i did.

thanks to the anon who recommended Working Girls to me. it was a solid enjoyable 3.5/5 for me with interesting characters and interactions. stressful moments really made me stress out! Dawn was my favorite character of the bunch but they all had their charms (and insufferable features) that made them feel real. I also liked how two conversations would often happen at the same time. just a nice touch of realism. Molly was the weakest link imo, I wasn't a fan of her delivery but she ended up being compelling in the end.

U a new fag to cinema or some shit. This has been talked about hundred times. Cliterion fucked up the mirror by using a decades old scan as a guiding point for the restorations color grade instead of using the beautifully aged print that artificial eye has. But the needed to sell their own distinct copy and because AE has a superior print they used the gimmick of Tarkovsky’s son approved which is fucking retarded as it sounds yes but the cult of criterion are too retarded to understand cinema because they just accept whatever they are told as truth exactly the way people who put all their faith in media are liable to do

Why does classic cinema get lumped in with arthouse?
Classic cinema was commercial entertainment that tried to attract a large audience, just from an era when people knew some dramaturgy and not obsessed with making intersectional propaganda.
Arthouse is pretentious wannabe-art that's different for the sake of being different and which explicitly wants to avoid large audiences so it can pretend to be elitist and high-brow.

That's not even a proper English sentence and I have no idea what it's trying to express.

It genuinely took me a dozen listens and the span of a few years to fully click for me but now it's one of my favorite albums. The first disc is definitely a lot more impenetrable than the second (Spanish Key and Miles Runs are closer to traditional jazz-funk, but still pretty gnarly and dense). In particular, I remember finding the dual drumming and dissonant bass clarinet to be big roadblocks the first few times around, but now I can't enough of them.

Also, listen to this. It was recorded around circa the BB sessions with similar personnel but it's a lot more accessible. One of my favorite Miles tunes.
