It's incredibly obvious that the ending is both of them are infected, and it's basically just The Thing talking to itself.

Was it ever explained somewhere what the thing avtually is?
I know the point of the movie is that its vague and nobody really knoes for certain but the movie is based on some book and i want to know if they ever go over it in the book?
I thought of the thing as something similar to the Ant funghus that makes you climb some plant and grow a funghus so that youre eaten by a bird or something
The thinh infects you and alters your mind in such a way that youre more likely to spread
Thats why the thing crashes into the arctic it wanted to go to earth while the astronauts wanted to go somewhere else and in the end it accidentaly

None of them were the things. There never was a thing. There was a highly contagious brain virus that made you see things and go crazy with paranoia. The Norwegians spread it to the American base then they all killed each other. When the rescue team arrived, they found only normal dead humans and a burned down base.

The pain from constricting veins may not appear at all if you have any insulation over arms and legs so you lose the warmth slowly rather than at rapid speed. In the movie they also have some fire around.
The most "fun" part is when you start to lose the warmth internally rather than in extremities because the air you breathe into your lungs is freezing cold and the body already can't sustain its own temperature.

It's just a shapeshifting alien. This is what its true form looks like. People forget this is just an adventure story from the 1930s. Those old pulp magazines were full of shit like that. I have no idea why they try to read more into it than what it is.

The thing knows it's the thing. Whoever came up with the theory that you don't know you are the thing is a retard because that doesn't make any sense at all. Funnily enough, Alien is based on a couple of stories published in the same magazine around the same time as Who Goes There. Discord in Scarlet is about a deep space crew that picks up an alien from the previous universe that survived the Big Crunch/Big Bang and it goes around attacking the crew and implanting eggs in their bodies. The Black Destroyer is about a crew who touches down on a desolate planet and pick up an alien stowaway. It's a Coeurl. Some people also know them as Displacer Beasts. A big alien panther with tentacles. It kills some people and they eventually lure it into a lifeboat and jettison it from their ship. Alien is kind of a mix of elements from both stories.

It's alien so you can't classify it by Earth categories, but it's essentially a virus.
It might have some higher motive, but it's questionable if it's truly intelligent or just mimicking intelligence. If it was truly intelligent, you would expect it to have stayed incognito as the dog or at least as it's first human victim. highly acclaimed science fiction short story "The Things" by Peter Watts.
Published in 2010 on Clarkesworld, this celebrated "extended act of fan fiction" retells the events of John Carpenter's 1982 horror classic The Thing entirely from the perspective of the shape-shifting alien biomass.
The story completely flips the moral geometry of the movie:
• The Alien's Mission: The creature is not a malicious monster, but a sentient, compassionate explorer. It travels the universe to share "communion"—peacefully merging with other species to cure them of the existential loneliness of being a solitary individual.
• How It Sees Humans: When it encounters the researchers at Outpost 31, it is deeply horrified. It views humans as fragmented, weeping "thinking cancers" because our cells are locked inside isolated bodies rather than sharing a collective consciousness. It perceives its violent assimilation of the crew as an act of rescue and healing.
• The Existential Dread: The story brilliantly tracks specific scenes from the movie (beginning with lines like "I am being Blair... I am being Childs"), showing that the alien is just as terrified of our violent refusal to become "whole" as the humans are of losing their identity.

You're both fucking whipped dogs for thinking that The Things is pro-alien or makes the alien look morally good at all. It doesn't. To your credit, there has been a lot of other media that tries to invert mortality with "good demons" or whatever but The Things isn't an example of that.
If you actually read the story instead of that retarded fucking AI summary that you replied to, The Thing's perspective in the story is clearly villainous. Even though it thinks of itself as being compassionate, the story explicitly frames The Thing as a literal rapist who understands that the humans don't want to be integrated and does it to them anyway. It's clearly intended to be horrifying and upsetting, not make the alien look good.

Right? I don't get how Carpenter can say no one got it right when there's really only 4 viable endings. If you listen to the commentary with him and Russel, Russel goes "but Mac isn't a thing" and Carpenter goes "well he could be"

I think Carpenter is just trolling. He likes that the ending can be any of these 4 and wants people to endlessly debate it. The movie didn't make money in its time and took about 10 years to grow a following and now he gets to have fun with it till he dies.

Reminds me of the CW Flash tv show. Everyone on the subreddit for over a year in the first season said a character was named after H. G. Wells. He was being serious too. I just couldn't believe it.

Wrong, McGreedy almost drank it before Childs shows up

At the end, Mac uses symbolic alcohol to defeat a non-human opponent

The answer was right in front of us all along.

Implies it has a deep meaning. He's full of shit.

>>223826039
He said horror movie, not a documentary.
>>
>>223829793
there's 0 reason to think a thing would not react to kerosene in its throat. There's no reason for Mac to test childs this way. Also, if a thing can speak english it has deeper sense memories, it would know the difference in smell and taste and react appropriately.

But it is the only scenario where it is supported by the context, i.e. has the highest probability as seen: >>223831433

You can play fiddlesticks all day with theories and inference but those lines of thought rarely have merit or worth.

That's what Carpenter is talking about. Something killed/assimilated Nauls. He could have easily just been left somewhere instead of being absorbed into the mass at the end that Mac blows up.

What if it has something to do with one of his other movies being connected? Like the reason Windows hasn't been able to reach anyone for two weeks is because some apocalypse happened and it was shown in another movie. That wouldn't really affect the ending with Mac and Childs though

Isn't the whole point that it's supposed to be ambiguous what the hell is this old fart talking about?

This is too literal, but even then if we go with the literal mirroring, it'd be whiskey, not kerosene.

The mirroring is Mac see's the computer as cheating. It is not playing by the rules as defined. So he destroys the computer. Later, Mac deals with Blair in the best way they saw fit at the time, they followed the rules of humanity, only to find yup, Blair was or became a thing. They took all the pieces out, but ah, the cheating thing got itself back on the board. So Mac stops playing by human rules and burns down the whole camp.

Thematic mirroring or literal mirroring. Which one is better?

Or maybe he just thought Childs might be, and didn't want to ingest anything offered... it's impossible to say for certain

John Carpenter also said the retarded ass video game is canon. So Childs died, but MacReady, after helping some random government spook, flew a black ops helicopter back to America after blowing up a CIA blacksite.

He's a retarded old boomer.
