>Are the Baudelaires Jewish?>Oh yeah! Yes. The Baudelaires are Jewish! I guess we would not know for sure but we would strongly suspect it, not only from their manner but from the occasional mention of a rabbi or bar mitzvah or synagogue. The careful reader will find quite a few rabbis.>Has the series been influenced by Jewish history?>I think there is something naturally Jewish about unending misery, yes. I mean, I guess naturally but not exclusively Jewish. I’m Jewish so, by default, the characters I create are Jewish, I think. Then I think I have something of a Jewish sensibility shaped by having a Jewish upbringing and so, therefore, books that I produce would be somewhat Jewish in tone.https://momentmag.com/jewish-secrets-lemony-snicket/
He originally planned on 109 books, I hear.

>>223826452>>223826452It was the fact that they were incredibly rich, members of a secret society that controls the world and their third cousin four times removed tries to marry a 14 year is what gave it away for me
ok

Half way through watching the TV series for the first time, like a month ago, i realized these books were 100% made to be products at a scholastic book fair. There actually quite terrible, even for kids books, and the TV series didn't scratch the itch of either a musical or a dark quirky troubadour play. The entire time i was just disassociating from the show imagining myself as Violet's brother having a "Flowers in the Attic" taboo incestuous relationship as we get shipped around to new places, trying to find somewhere to hide and have hot sweaty passionate sibling sex.
>>223826452Okay, and why should I give a fuck?
>>223826598>Expelled by Caretakers/Guardian 12 times>Never their fault
>>223826677So it took you 12 episodes to realise these were children's books?
>>223826768Why even bother replying if you just make a strawman of what i said to have a little drive-by insult? Considering that's mathematically the best way to encourage engagement, therefore derive more information to make algorithm models more accurate - your behaviour can be summed up as bot behaviour. If you're a human whose been habituated into posting like a bot, then that's just sad.
>>223826452I forgive Violet for her jewishness
>>223826452No they are not. Also "Baudelaire" is absolutely not a jewish name
>>223826452I didn't realize this was a sad occasion

>>223826677>Half way through watching the TV series for the first time, like a month ago, i realized these books were 100% made to be products at a scholastic book fair.Well yeah. The narrator quite literally defines words that are difficult or hard to spell for the audience. He does it in a roundabout way and very sarcastically, but it's clear that the books are specifically intended to expand vocabulary.
>>223826452This is an old interview and, like he says, the books keep referencing rabbis and such. Not new info.>>223826677I remember as a kid I loved the bleak tone/vibe, the dry humour of the narrator, and the occasional surreal shit like a full black page to illustrate how dark an elevator shaft was. I was less keen on the more in-universe humour (silly zany dialogue from cartoony characters like olaf's henchmen) and unfortunately both the movie and the netflix show double down on that stuff.
The frustrating part is that I really liked Jim Carrey's portrayal of Count Olaf more than NPH.He did a good job of leaning into "cartoonishly evil". But I like that the TV series was more accurate to the books Also, both Melina Weisman and Kara Hoffman were outrageously hot in both roles, and I have no clue how to say that without being a massive creep.

One of the things I like is that at the end of the 13th book, they imply the Mr. Poe was the real villain all along, and that every action he took was a combination of method acting mixed with malicious compliance. But they don't reveal or expand on it at all.
>>223827940>Mr. Poe was the real villain all along,What was his goal? He had easy access to the kids the entire time
>>223827958Basically to break them. Make things shitty enough to the point that him adopting them would seem the less suspect at their death.
>>223826452A series of unfortunate penis, now.

>>223826677ASOUE was, like other children's books, very much a product of their time. With limited internet, each book was an "event" where you discussed theories and plot twists with your friends at school instead of forums online. The books were mediocre yeah, but so were many children's books that were entirely carried by the artists (ASOUE, Goosebumps, Deltora Quest, etc.).
>>223828008Bold of them to use ersatz in the title.
>>223828045It's at the very end. They very briefly mention that Mr. Poe had been a part of an acting troupe very early on. Implication being that not only was he familiar with the VFD, but he'd already known what Count Olaf was up to from the very beginning. I'll see if I can find the line.
>>223826452>I think there is something naturally Jewish about unending miseryThat may be the most truthfully antisemitic statement ever made. Hitler wishes he had written that line.
>>223826452Hardly surprising when they have a distant relative who looks like this
>>223828359Well it’s just true. Our history isn’t exactly a barrel of laughs. And we like to stew in it and kvetch about it.
