This is still the best Batman EVER.
37 years later and it's still beats every other Batman movie since then.
>>
>>223833553
I really like how this movie first showed Batman as this nightmare creature at first, like a scary boogyman to thugs
>>
Batman as an expression of Gothic maximalism always appealed to me a lot more than the Brutalist nihilism of the Nolan trilogy
>>
It takes itself seriously enough to be spooky, but not seriously enough to be ridiculous like Nolan... and not good ridiculous, like West batman
>>
Yeah it is, and it keeps getting better the more I watch it and learn about it. It's also the most influencial Batman film, on top of helping redifining Batman I'm not sure we'd have gotten 1990 Dick Tracy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles without it, not the way they were anyway.

in b4 retards applying modern logic to it and calling it "capeshit"
>>
It's visually gorgeous and I like the Elf Man's music here, but some things suck.

>Joker dances to Prince TWICE, remember to buy the official CD folks
>Joker's TV spot with the weird cutout animation
>Joker's scarred mob girlfriend is interesting but very underused
>the story is standard and unadventurous, at least from a modern perspective
>Batman kills a henchman by throwing him down the bell tower, and it seems like it could have been avoided
>>
>>223833553
It's great but I prefer Returns.
>>
>>223833633
Same. The Joel Schumacher ones took it to ridiculous extremes, but it looked cool.
>>
>>223833845
I respect Joel Schumacher's Gay Fantasia on Gotham Themes
the set design and theatricality is so obnoxious that it wraps around and becomes really cool
>>
>>223833856
Jim Carrey's Riddler was more obnoxious than anything else in those films. I had been a fan of his, and I distinctly remember watching Batman Forever in the cinema and thinking, "This is the first time I've hated a Jim Carrey performance." I never looked at him the same way again after that. It didn't help that BF was soon followed by a sanitised, kiddie Ace Ventura sequel and the fucking awful Liar Liar.

>Joker dances to Prince TWICE, remember to buy the official CD folks

That was a smart use of those songs. As many others, Prince didn't understand what this movie was going to be like and assumed it was going to be like the Adam West style. The Joker dancing on them was the only way to include them in a way that makes sense as it makes the whole thing uncanny. Presumably they were supposed to use more songs but didn't.

>Joker's scarred mob girlfriend is interesting but very underused

That's the point, him transforming her and discarding her is a thing to show he is a completely different person than he was before

>the story is standard and unadventurous, at least from a modern perspective
Because it was about redifining the essence of Batman, going back to basics before expanding (which the 3 sequels did, yes Forever and &Robin are in the same canon)

>>Joker's TV spot with the weird cutout animation
Love that Joker!

>Batman kills a henchman
Batman "not being allowed to kill" was censoring imposed on the comics.
>>
>>223834000
highly recommend this to everyone
one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen
>>
>>223833954
>>223833989
I cannot sanction your buffoonery
>>
>>223834000
>>223834159
I rewatched it recently. Still enjoyed it, but found that it drags on for about 20 minutes longer than it needs to.
>>
>>223834130
Joker blaring Prince on a boombox while dancing through an art gallery defacing paintings was a very fitting use of the licensed music
>>
>>223834130
>Batman "not being allowed to kill" was censoring imposed on the comics.
people who get autistic about Batman never being able to kill are really silent when it comes to the Nolan films (which they love) where he blatantly kills people whose deaths are usually not shown on screen
Batman killed the Joker in The Killing Joke, so him never breaking his rule isn't even comic accurate
I quite liked the BvS portrayal of a Batman who is completely messed up inside, and he didn't even kill people except in his nightmare
the inability of the turbovirgin Batman audience to grow up and accept different portrayals of the character is the reason Spider-Man has overtaken him in popularity
>>
>>223834239
People who get autistic about Batman never being able to kill are really silent when it comes to the first fucking Batman comics where he casually kills people.
>>
>>223834310
I'm just happy that the Reeves Batman had him actually do some detective work
cautiously hopeful for the sequel with Soderbergh taking over directing duties and Reeves still having control over the edit
>>
>>223834239
It doesn’t help that Batman comics have been total trash since the 00s. To this day, every live action Batman movie is some variation of:

Dark Knight Returns
Year One
The Killing Joke
The Long Halloween
Knightfall
>>
>>223834239
No matter what you say, Shitfleck will never be valid as batman, murder and all

How do people feel about Caped Crusader?

>WOKE WOKE WOKE KYS TRANNY WOKE WOKE LOOK HE'S BEING WOKE

Yes it's pretty woke, but I've been enjoying it so far. Every episode has held my attention, and that counts for a lot with me. Most modern shit just bores me, but not this, and I'm liking some of the reimagined characters.
>>
>>223834359
I blame Nolan for his shit movies ruining it for everyone else
I appreciate Snyder's attempt but it was unfortunately fucked over by the theatrical cut that butchered the story and left audiences really fucking confused
I'd really like to see lesser known Batman villains get their time to shine
here are some I'd like to see
>Victor Zsasz
>Hush
>Calendarman
>Hugo Strange
>Black Mask
>Firefly
>Deathstroke
>>
>>223833553
Returns is better.
>>
>>223834359
Probably because those are the only good ones. Except for Long Halloween which is shit.

The Arkham escape one looked very pretty though and the alternative Batman noir at least had an interesting concept.
>>
>>223834429
here's a tally
>George Clooney: 0
>Robert Pattinson: 0
>Adam West: 1
>Val Kilmer: 7
>Christian Bale: 15+
>Michael Keaton: 15+
>Ben Affleck: 20+
unless your favourite Batman is Robert Pattinson, because it definitely isn't Clooney, then your favourite Batman killed people
>>
>>223833553
Every scene with Nicholson is a snooze.
Returns mogs it in every way.
>>
>>223834437
I haven't seen it but I want to, though in the trailer Batman's VA sounds like a bad impersonation of Conroy

Clooney wasn’t a bad choice in theory, but he was still mainly a TV actor at the time. He hadn’t developed his movie star image yet.

Clooney was cast for his chin. The main problem though is not him but the script

I thought Clooney was a pretty good choice desu. Much better than Affleck and on par with Pattinson.
>>
>>223834594

Same can be said about Affleck and BvS. Affleck is a competent if slightly bland Batman, but the story is stupid nonsense and you've got that cringelord Jesse Eisenberg prancing around. Affleck could have turned in a Daniel Day Lewis-tier performance and it still wouldn't have been enough to save this shitshow:

am I the only one who noticed that the Batwing sequence is missing shots, specifically when the missiles are launched. It makes it look like things are happening randomly
>>
Batman Returns is my favourite. The whole backlash about 'batman doesn't kill' is absurd. If you can have Gotham by Gaslight then you can have Burtons version of Batman. The Nolan movies have good set pieces but I find myself unengaged with the world he created and his plot dependent character traits. I like the new Batman but hope it gets more fantastical as it goes on. Glad that Joker scene was cut because psychotic killer joker is done imo.
>>
>>223834600
Returns and DKR both have the issue imo. Keaton and Bale both clearly demanded less time in the suit for the sequels.
>>
Are we getting an extended cut of Batman Forever?
>>
.....am I the only one who doesn't mind batman & robin? I've probably been brainwashed because it was only batman movie I could get in my local.video store as a kid
>>

The sequels having less batman is usually a good thing.
>>
>>223834785
I guess, but the mystique is ruined once you know it was for contractual reasons.
>>
>>223834748

It's definitely overhated, because people didn't want a cartoony adam west style comedy. But even if you accept that it has flaws, I rewatched it recently and for me one of the main flaws that is never bought is how terrible sound editing is. If you check the action scenes they sound very flat because of it, and even half of the dialogues sound terrible.
also Alicia Silverstone sucks and I can't help but think the 2nd set of costume that appears only at the end; plus the new vehicles they get for less than 2 mins they do nothing with were only there to make new toys out of them. They even look like toys.Hell even the main Batmobile at the start of the movie, the one seated one with Batman sticking his head out like there is something wrong with the size of it, looks like a giant toy commercial.

also I don't mind Batgirl but Alicia Silverstone sucks. But the movie has great visuals and the action can be fun though it sometimes has pacing issues, and when bad CG isn't in your face, though I'd argue they make good use of it in some cases
>>
>>223834748
I don't object to campy Batman in principle, and I don't sperg out over things like the Bat credit card, but I think the Schumaker films are bad because they fail on their own terms and don't achieve their purpose. They're supposed to be funny, right? The goal of a campy Batman is obviously to make people laugh. The Adam West show is funny, but I didn't hear many laughs when I saw Shumacher's films in the cinema, and there were no laughs coming from my direction either. They had the most popular funnyman of the 90s in Forever, and he was just fucking irritating, not funny. Similarly, when I saw B & R, Arnold's ice-based jokes landed on the theatre floor with a lifeless thud, and expedited the decline of his career. Plus the films are just plain ugly. Grotesque, even.

This. Everything about it is completely iconic. The casting is perfect the dialogue is great and the costumes, vehicles and set designs are perfect. Pretty much the only criticism is having two prince songs in the movie. Returns is great too, Catwoman looks amazing and Keaton and Walken are both awesome but penguin isn't a great villain compared to Nicholson's Joker or Walken's evil business guy.
>>
>>223835020
The Penguin is the anti-Batman and everything about him is a mirror image of what happened to Bruce Wayne
it's an idea so good that Reeves recycled it for his Riddler
>>
>>223834748
A BAT CREDIT CARD?!?!?!
>>
>>223835051
it was a cool moment and completely in character
>>
>>223835033
it's also Burton's fetish, I mean running theme of, "we different people can never fit in society". TAS would tackle that idea better though by making him less unhinged, but the movie needed a villain

Still I like the running theme of the Penguin (and sometimes other things too) going in and out of the water throughout the entire movie.
A Batman movie today, even Reeves', would never have people living in the sewers, they "need" to be more literal and less surreal.
>>
File: cap.jpg (31 KB, 1024x768)

>>223833553
BASED. Agreed.

It's a pity Batman Returns was such absolute fucking trash the studio ended up hiring Schumacher who then butchered the franchise.

But that first Burton film is perfect.
>>
>>223835097
the desire to it realistic is a problem for the franchise
Nolan ruined his villains really badly because they weren't allowed to be surreal or borderline magical
Ra's Al Ghul needs to have immortality as his gimmick, and Bane needs to be gigantic and monstrous
nobody will ever do Killer Croc and that makes me sad
>>223835150
the suits gave Burton too much freedom after the success of the first Batman, and he turned it into something that was "too scary" and definitely too sexual for the 10 year olds that were being taken by their grandparents
Returns didn't suck at all, it was too good and we weren't ready for it
>>
>>223835150
>It's a pity Batman Returns was such absolute fucking trash the studio ended up hiring Schumacher

A McDonalds employee typed this post
>>
>>223835033
That doesn't make him a good villain though. He's zero threat to Batman in a fight, which is Batman's whole deal and everything Penquin has in the movie to be a threat to Gotham makes no sense. How did he learn to and afford to make his weird umbrellas or rockets? How did he randomly get the schematics to the Batmobile? How does he suddenly have a gang when he's lived in the sewer forever? I mean at least Joker makes sense because he was already a criminal and already had a network of resources that he expanded.
>>
>>223835150
>Batman Returns was such absolute fucking trash the studio ended up hiring Schumacher who then butchered the franchise

For the studio, the issue with Batman Returns was that small children left the kinoplex crying their eyes out, and soccer moms were angry that a PG film had lewd jokes and clear BDSM imagery. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was unambiguously a dominatrix with a whip, and she always looked like she was at the brink of orgasm. This was not acceptable, not when there were toys to be sold and a Saturday morning cartoon in the works.

But the film was pretty good and Burton was based for making it.
>>
>>223835183
>Returns didn't suck at all
Ehh.
>>
>>223835234
The gang is explained, it's the old circus troupe he was adpoted by which he presumably took over once they stopped performing after "mysterious children disappearences" when the circus was in town. The umbrellas could easily be explained by that too.

also technically it's not just the sewers they live in but an abandonned theme park

But all of that is besides the point, not everything needs to be realistic nor should be explained, just enough to get the suspenssion of disbelief going and enough that it makes sense within the world they created.
>>
>>223834344
I agree although on reflection, he is a terrible detective and should have been able to crack the case in the first 15 minutes.
>>
Based. Michael Keaton is the one, true Batman. Batman 89 is not capeshit, it's a Comic Book Film and a perfect one. Bumping the only good thread this board will see all day.

>>223834999
>1. The Batman

yikes. I liked Battinson, but the movie was a bloated mess.
>>
>>223835410
the reason he can't crack the case is that he's too rich to know what the carpet tucker is, so he needs to humble himself and then he's able to figure it out
>>
>>223835410
I think the entire idea was "the only way to make The Riddler lose is if Batman wasn't playing along", but yeah, it makes him look like a dumbass compared to the usual "best detective in the world" portrayal

Anyone knows any detail about how during development Returns would have had an action scene involving Batman saving the children from the Organ Grider's train? In the movie it's mostly off-screen.
I checked the script and it's not in there so I can't say if this was a real thing or a mandella effect because it's in some of the video games
