Actions have consequences. And there sure as shit should be some consequences for that Lex Luthor performance.

>He was big enough to pass on it
Was he, though? I struggle to remember what he had been in leading up to BvS. It seemed like his career had basically dried up in the latter half of the 2010s. He was literally everywhere in the first half of the decade.

He plays Lex Luthor like a spritely imp. It's such a strange portrayal

Yeah, why is Variety publishing an old ass fuck interview?

And? If he read the script and specifically his part he should’ve known it was going to be ass. This wasn’t a case of a good script being ruined by bad production. The opposite. Production was fine the script was horrific like all of Goyers garbage

I have 2 thoughts

1) I agree he would’ve made a wonderful Riddler

2)It’s funny watching DCU fans say “trust the process” and “be patient” while refusing to extend that same grace here. BvS was obviously a style of origin for Lex. You could tell even before the movie came out with that long hair that it would get shaved at the end and he would become more of a trad Luthor. I think one of BvS’s fundamental mistakes was trusting the audience too much. And while I don’t think Snyder and the gang took an objectively wrong approach to the DCEU I wouldn’t fault anyone for wanting a vanilla approach like the MCU. I will fault them for disingenuously engaging with the product.

Snyder was right and Reddit was wrong on the people still talk about his movies thing though. The absolute worst thing that can happen is apathy, when the audience just stops caring. Through all of Snyder’s and WB’s bullshit people still showed up. Literally nobody pulled up for Supergirl, Lanterns got rug pulled in the third episode, and Clayface is a dead end. The international audience already up and left.
>>
>>223840074
My favorite part was in the opening there are CGI blankets that twirl around on the stage and I was like, wow so this is the level of believability? Ok. Then they pay the janitor in the skyscraper to somehow turn the floor lights into an image? uhh ok I guess.

also the two FBI agents a man and woman are bickering like han solo and leia and im like oh god please.... turn it off
>>
>>223840080
> You can’t trust the audience with TDKR or The Death of Superman concepts.
WTF you talking about! Yes you can but you have to build up to it or it’s meaningless. You especially don’t ram them both into a single fucking movie. You can’t have Batman and Superman fighting each other without the long history the two characters shared. You can’t kill off Superman in his second appearance and expect people to give a shit. Look how people reacted to Iron Man dying in End Game. See the difference?
>>
>>223838479
A new DCU movie is out this week and Variety is dropping a hit piece at the now dead DCEU because Affleck & Manganiello decided to talk about their postive experiences with it. And this isn’t even real news, this is from an article years ago. How badly is Gunn seething right now?
>>
>>223840064

>You especially don’t ram them both into a single fucking movie. You can’t have Batman and Superman fighting each other without the long history the two characters shared.
You absolutely can and you are proving my point. Superman and Batman are the 2 most established heroes ever. Snyder trusted the audience to understand the mythos. The same exact way Gunn said you don’t need origin stories anymore. You don’t need a Batfleck movie beforehand. We aren’t going to sit here and pretend Batman VS Superman wasn’t hyped as fuck.

I would’ve liked to see Manganiello‘s Deathstroke and a Batfleck movie. However I’m not going to act like this is the one that got away. They were struggling to put together a decent script along with flaky ideas like killing off Gordon. Regardless of Ben’s experience with Justice League if he had something he was really excited about that movie would’ve found a way to happen.

Now if I was doing a Batfleck movie today I would literally just do Hush and cast Matt Damon.
>>
>>223839501
Shaving his egghead isn't anywhere near enough to turn him into Luthor. The movie would've been so much better if the role was played by a real man, not this sniveling mess
>>
>>223840427
Idiot. Superman origins been done before on screen. This was literally the first movie Superman and Batman were in the same movie! If Snyder wanted to skip the meet up of them then he could’ve had it where they already knew each other. This is what Gunn is doing. His Superman and Batman already will already each other. In this not only do they not know each other, hade zero history, Batman off the bat wants to kill his ass

Who said I like Gunn you Snyder fag? Fact is Snyder ruined the DC brand beyond redemption. Gunn making his bullshit slop at this point. DC over. MCU will continue to dominate
>>
>>223841960
I didn’t mention Gunn, but it’s pretty obvious from the graph that the DC brand began to decline when WB executives decided to move away from Snyder’s somber style and opt for stale, goofy humor after Shazam.
Which is made more obvious when you see that their biggest wins, Joker and The Batman, were far away from that style they were insisting on.
>>
>>223841956
Superman and Batman always been like brothers. Day and night. One is optimistic the other is stoic. Like Captain Kirk and Mr Spock. When they fought in Dark Knight Returns they weren’t trying to kill each other. Batman actually setting it to fake his death and Superman was going easy on him. It was just two friends who drifted idealistically. BvS Batman wanted straight up murder Superman and was going to until Superman cried for his mommy

>>
>>223842034
You say that, but I think you’re a casual who doesn’t know the history of their first meetings. Even in the 50s, during the first reboot, Bruce and Clark started out at odds before teaming up to save the cruise they were on. In the 80s reboot, written by John Byrne, they were again at odds in a story mirroring the dynamic of TDKR, published a few years earlier, where the US president at the time, Reagan, asked Superman to apprehend Batman. Things eventually worked out, but DC editorial kept them separate and as frenemies for a long time. Superman wasn’t even allowed in team books like Justice League. It wasn’t until the 90s that they began to be portrayed as friends, starting with Zero Hour and culminating in Morrison’s JLA run.

>>
Has anyone else noticed Zack Snyder’s weird obsession with making all his villains super zesty? Even when they’re completely straight in the source material, Snyder dials up the flamboyance, while turning the heroes into absolute bastions of classic masculinity.

Look at Watchmen. Comic Ozymandias is a stoic, built guy, yet in the movie he’s prancing around his lounge like a catwalk model. Compare that to NiteOwl II. In the comics, Dan is a pudgy, pathetic middle-aged fellow, yet Snyder casts Patrick Wilson, an objectively handsome, charming guy. You look at his strong jawline and warm, soulful eyes, and you’re supposed to buy that he’s a loser?

In 300, the contrast gets even crazier. Xerxes goes from a bearded king to a nine-foot club promoter in gold chains who walks up behind men just to rub their shoulders. Meanwhile, the Greek heroes are pure, unfiltered machismo. Look at Gerard Butler and the Spartans in nothing but tight leather briefs, just peak alpha males with rock-hard pecs and cut abs, completely oily and glistening in the hot sun. When the camera slows down on the sweat trickling down their bronze chests and thick thighs as they grunt together like carved Greek gods, you just nod and think, yeah, that’s what being a straight guy is all about.

By BvS, he isn’t even subtle. Lex Luthor is reduced to Jesse Eisenberg acting sassy and gay, while the heroes are peak no-nonsense manliness. You have Henry Cavill’s overwhelming physical beauty, shirtless, broad-shouldered, with full lips and a thick, glorious mat of dark chest hair that looks incredible to rest your cheek against. And next to him is Ben Affleck looking like an absolute foxy silver daddy, all salt-and-pepper stubble and glistening muscle doing pull-ups in a dark basement. You just sit there biting your lip, wondering why Snyder makes the villains so gay when we could cut Lex entirely and just watch Henry and Ben wrestle in the rain for three hours.
>>
>>223842875
There is homoerotic shit in Snyder movies and why jeets and spics love him. They all have this weird fixation on cartoon level masculinity. Think Rob Swanson I eat steak but i’m a manly man shit but next level. That’s Snyder where all his heroes are like the beach volleyball scene in Top Gun and so manly the villains want a piece of it

Complaining that Batman wants to make a Kryptonite spear to stab Superman in the heart rather than just "being at odds at first" completely misses what Zack Snyder is adapting. Snyder pulled directly from DC's biggest comics, not just the obvious visual parallels to The Dark Knight Returns, but Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum and its Jungian fight with the shadow, which is the exact reason Bruce is plagued by nightmares and uses a spear to hunt an outside entity perceived as a "dragon" when he is actually hunting his own demons. He combined that with Alex Ross’s Peace on Earth about the unintended consequences of trying to do good, the Trinity comic featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, Final Crisis showing what happens if the worst comes to pass, The Death of Superman about the death of an American icon, and Kingdom Come, alongside parallels to Excalibur and the JFK assassination to show the downfall of a beautiful era. All of this was done to deconstruct these heroes as a mirror for the downfall of post-9/11 America, asking whether a traumatized country can face its demons, find a way out, and be rehabilitated, with the movie's answer, at least for the DC heroes, being a clear yes.

The movie provides all the necessary context. Alfred spends the first half of the movie explaining the current state of the Batman character. And then Bruce's introduction shows explicitly how and why he'd come to consider Superman a threat. What did you think was missing? Did you not understand why they were in conflict? Because the movie articulates their difference of opinion multiple times in multiple ways.

what "bearded king?" movie xerxes is identical to the one in the comic.

Eh you kinda need the zest with how stoic Cavill was. Obviously Eisenberg’s Luthor wouldn’t work with Corenswet who’s a whiny baby.

Fact you are asking this shows how little you know the characters. That Snyder turned every character into Watchmen
Batman-Rorschach a paranoid psychopath
Superman- Dr Manhattan and completely detached form humanity to point he aura farms as everyone dies in court house
Lex-Ozymandias who frames Superman with explosion
Wonder Woman-Silk Specter
Doomsday-Squid Monster which gets everyone to come together and fight

It's telling that haters don't even know what character he played in that film. Protip: it was Luthor's son not Luthor himself.

That is where Snyder tried way too hard, people don't want to think this much while watching a movie, I don't want some random 65 year old famous actor to be his father that idea is gay. As a Lex performance trying to be different I actually didn't hate it. Its not even that far off from the Hackman Lex from Superman (1978) where he is a bit flippant and has brains not brawn.
>>
>>223843127
I have no idea what you're talking about, man. Keep those to yourself, I'm not interested in men at all. I'm just pointing out a bizarre pattern in how the guy directs his movies, no need to make it weird.

>>223843403
Fair point, I mixed up the historical bearded depictions with the comic. Even in Miller's panels, Xerxes already looks like a guy who just walked out of an underground BDSM club. Still, Snyder completely overdid it in the movie. In the comic he mostly just stands there looking imposing, whereas Snyder directs him to purr into the mic and slowly caress Gerard Butler's oiled-up, muscular shoulders from behind while Leonidas just stands there with his jaw clenched, looking all rugged and stoic.

>>223843570
I get needing a foil for a stoic Superman, but did Snyder really need to make Jesse's Lex that zesty just for the contrast? And on the flip side, did he really need to make Superman and Batman so unreasonably hot just to sell the traditional masculine hero angle? You don't need Lex prancing around to appreciate how imposing Henry is when he's brooding in the rain with that chiseled jaw and wet curls, or how effortlessly rugged Ben looks filling out a tailored three-piece suit with those broad shoulders and that heavy, intense gaze. It just feels like overkill when the two of them already command the entire screen just by standing way too close and staring into each other's eyes.

While BvS is undeniably a deconstructive movie, essentially framing the DC pantheon as different facets of a post-9/11 America, with Bruce representing trauma-driven, preemptive-strike paranoia and Clark representing the geopolitical fallout of well-intentioned interventionism, reducing it to a 1:1 rehash of Watchmen completely misses the point. If anything, when you put the two side by side, BvS operates as a direct refutation of Watchmen.

Comparing Superman to Dr. Manhattan gets his characterization completely backward. Manhattan’s tragedy is that his omnipotence makes him genuinely detached and indifferent to human life. Clark’s main problem in BvS isn't that he doesn't care, it's that he cares way too much, even when he tries to convince Lois (and himself) that what people say about him doesn't matter. He isn't "aura farming" in the burning Capitol; he's standing there paralyzed by crushing guilt because every death in that room feels like a personal failure he should have prevented.

His entire arc is about the unintended consequences of trying to do good in a cynical world and his unresolved guilt over what happened in Metropolis. That's why dismissing Doomsday as just a stand-in for Ozymandias's squid misses the thematic core of the third act. Doomsday is literally the corpse of Zod brought back to haunt him, a physical manifestation of Clark's "sins" from Metropolis and a dark reflection of the exact unchecked, apocalyptic monster the world accuses him of being.

Where Watchmen concludes that heroes are broken, humanity can only be united through a cynical lie, and its god-figure should just abandon Earth, BvS uses those same deconstructive pressures to argue the opposite. Clark confronts the literal monster made from his past trauma and willingly gives his life for a world that spent the whole movie against him.

The same applies to calling Batman a knockoff Rorschach. In BvS, Bruce’s descent into a "paranoid psychopath" isn't framed as cool, it's an explicit critique of police brutality, the extrajudicial overreach of the War on Terror. Between branding low-level criminals in Gotham's slums, torturing suspects, and literally paraphrasing Dick Cheney’s "One Percent Doctrine" to justify a preemptive strike against an alien refugee, the movie treats his mindset as a moral rot born from trauma and powerlessness.

What separates Batman from Rorschach is that Rorschach is defined by his total inability to change, choosing to die rather than compromise his black-and-white psychosis. Bruce, on the other hand, goes through a Jungian confrontation with his own Shadow straight out of Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylumcomic. In the Morrison's notes for that comic, he explains that Batman pinning Killer Croc with a spear represents the mythological dragon-slaying, subduing the primal beast of his own subconscious. In BvS Bruce builds the Kryptonite spear convinced that Superman is the existential "dragon" he must slay to give his life meaning, only to realize at the fatal moment that he is the monster in the room, standing over a pleading man just like Joe Chill stood over his parents.

Throwing that spear aside is the ultimate refutation of Rorschach. Bruce undergoes a literal Paul of Tarsus conversion, the relentless persecutor is struck down by grace and transforms into the chief apostle who goes on to build the "church" (the Justice League) in the savior's name. It’s the exact same trajectory Morrison used across his bibliography, deconstructing and exorcising the grim, hyper-violent 80s/90s post-Frank Miller take on the character specifically so he can heal, find his heroic spark again, and be reconstructed into the noble, collaborative leader of Dennis O'Neil's 70s run and Morrison's own 2000s JLA comic.

No, it’s not. Lex flat-mount tells you he’s not his father, that the company isn’t even named for him. He also signs his name as Alexander. If that’s not enough, he says, “Dad named the company after himself,” and Luthor’s father is named Lionel.

Since you enjoyed it, i might as well finish my posts by adding what Snyder did with Wonder Woman.

Reducing Wonder Woman to Silk Spectre like that anon did is just a surface-level reading of the movie. Laurie is a reluctant second-generation hero defined by her mother’s baggage and her romantic ties to the men around her, whereas Diana’s role in BvS is anchored in her history as a disillusioned World War I veteran. In the film's post-9/11 allegory, she embodies the lost idealism of America. Representing the generation that fought the "good war" to end all wars, only to suffer profound loss and watch humanity immediately plunge into decades of endless bloodshed anyway. Carrying that trauma and disappointment, she checks out of society altogether, retreating into isolation because she’s convinced mankind isn't worth saving.

Her arc is about confronting that century of grief and realizing that she not only can, but needs to be part of the world again, that despite everything she saw on the battlefield, men can still be good. When she boards that plane and walks away from it to join the fight, she is actively rejecting her cynicism and inserting herself into a conflict between men to unite them. It’s a direct echo of Darwyn Cooke’s DC: The New Frontier, where a battle-hardened Diana becomes jaded by the ugliness of post-war geopolitics before returning to inspire a new era, combined with William Moulton Marston’s original 1940s wartime vision of the character as a mediator who binds destructive masculine forces with the Lasso of Truth.

Instead of remaining a detached bystander while the world tears itself apart, she literally tethers Doomsday with the lasso, holding the line so Bruce and Clark can finish the fight together. By the time the movie ends, the disillusioned veteran who spent a hundred years hiding in the shadows has found her faith in humanity again, stepping up alongside Batman to use her experience as the shepherd of a new generation.

Finally, equating Lex to Ozymandias just because he frames Superman with an explosion ignores what the character actually represents. Veidt is a cold utilitarian trying to unite humanity against nuclear annihilation. Eisenberg’s Lex is the exact opposite. Like the other characters in the movie he embodies America, its systemic corruption. The unholy marriage between lobbying-bought political institutions, the military-industrial complex, and Silicon Valley surveillance capitalism. He operates like a human algorithm, turning people into data points, harvesting dirt, and locking Bruce, Clark, and Diana inside custom-built echo chambers of tailored outrage just to turn everyone against everyone.

Where Veidt operates on detached geopolitical math, Lex is warped by an abusive father into believing that innocence is a fraud, that you can only be powerful by sinning, and that everyone is hiding skeletons he can leverage or buy off. When he can't buy people, he destroys them, waging a literal war on Truth, Justice, and Mercy through the three women he targets: trying to silence Lois (who investigates factual 'Truth'), assassinating Senator Finch (who refuses his lobbying and champions democratic 'Justice'), and sacrificing his own assistant, 'Mercy', when he blows up the Capitol.

In Watchmen, Ozymandias’s cynical manipulation wins, the heroes are outmaneuvered and compromise their morals to protect his lie. In BvS, Lex’s entire philosophy of polarization and control collapses because the heroes breaks out of his echo chambers to reclaim the exact three virtues he tried to murder: Diana steps out of a century of hiding to bind his monster, an embodiment of lies, with the Lasso of 'Truth', Bruce pulls back from the abyss, drops the spear, and spares both Clark and Lex in his cell to reclaim his 'Mercy', and Clark willingly lays down his life for the world, becoming the literal cornerstone for the 'Justice' League.

Good stuff.

Have you ever attacked MoS/BvS from a post-911 geopolitical perspective? I posted my analysis a long time ago now, but it basically boils down to this:

>Clark: the invisible immigrant
>Superman: the visible immigrant
>Bruce: the American “son”
>Batman: the American soldier
>Lex: the Global elite
>Zod: the fanatical extremist (Al Qaeda)
>Doomsday: the “resurrected” fanatical extremist (ISIS)
>Lois: the world of the future
>Diana: the world of myth
>Martha: the world that nurtures
>Senator Finch: the world as it is (truth)

>>

I definitely see it across both movies, and especially in Man of Steel. Your breakdown of Clark vs. Superman as the "invisible" vs. "visible" immigrant alongside Zod as the fanatical extremist hits the nail on the head, in fact, when you look at how the plot mechanics of MoS bleed into BvS, the entire two-part arc functions as an allegory for the post-9/11 Muslim experience and the geopolitical trauma between East and West.

Even your parallel between Doomsday and ISIS tracks with the literal plot of the third act. Just as Western geopolitical meddling in the aftermath of 9/11 inadvertently mutated the remnants of old insurgencies into ISIS, Lex steps into the foreign ship, takes the corpse of the original extremist (Zod), mixes his own blood into the chamber, and engineers a mindless, apocalyptic abomination to validate everyone's worst fears.

Well, “Lex” flat says it in the movie. To be fair, it’s a detail that would really only stick out to people who know comics history. It’s not just that he signs his name as “Alexander” as seen on Bruce’s gala invitation, it’s also in what he says about the company being named after his father. In order for that to be the case, that makes the “Lex” we see the original’s son - Alexander Luthor, as the senior’s father’s name was Lionel. I liked that aspect, because in the comics, Luthor Sr. is depicted as having come from a poor family with an abusive father. Lex’s statements in the film as well as him opting to have his head shaved at the end comes off as commentary as the generational “disease” of abuse as well as how frequently men from such backgrounds frequently end up becoming like their fathers.
>>
>>223845696
My favorite bit is how the one of the first actions we see Doomsday take is destroying and “idol” to a false god. The other aspect of him that relates directly to the nature of fanatics and terrorism is how he absorbs damage, explodes, and mutates into an even more violent form.
