>>223844376Very entertaining story. I was worried the premise would get old (no pun intended) but the way they wrote Commodore Stocker was invigorating. Like all Commodores, he's incompetent and doesn't know a damn thing he's doing, but unlike the rest this comes from a lack of experience and an inability to take field command, rather than an overzealous hand and a know-better attitude. All the deference he gives to Kirk & Spock prior to regulations forcing his hand, it really makes you sympathize with him when he makes the idiotic decision to cut across the Romulan Neutral Zone. The Romulans were also incredibly well handled. When Kirk proposed the idea of them developing a new superweapon to induce rapid aging, I wasn't worried that would be the way the story would go because they mentioned the comet a scene later and I thought "Well of course it's something weird from the comet's trail." The mentioning of proximity to Romulan Space could've just been a neat worldbuilding detail to give the episode a little more flavor, but the way Old Kirk fails to remember Code 2 got cracked and then the rejuvenated Kirk comes in and uses that to give the pair of Warbirds the slip (via another Corbomite maneuver) was just the perfect amount to not go overboard with their presence. The Romulans show up, but it's not a Romulan episode, just what I was hoping for.The scenes of Old Kirk slowly degenerating, repeating commands and lashing out when he's forgotten something, it's so real and so pitiful. Then it lightens up a little with him sitting in the captain's chair to brood only for us to jump ahead to him falling asleep and the rest of the bridge crew just working around him. Timeless old man behavior.Anyway, you know that "Spock Diagnosis" jpg which usually gets posted whenever someone says something really stupid? Pic related could make for a great followup if they continue to be stupid. Hopefully it doesn't get used against me, lol.

>>223860929Didn't Janeway basically do the same thing with the Borg though? Voyager having to deal with technologically superior races was some of their best stuff. The Kazon might be retarded but they did have power and maybe Voyager could've tried to reform them or something. That would be the Trek thing to do.
There's at least one invisible or thought-transformed Talosian in every single episode because they need to come in to feed Pike and the rest of the people who originally beamed down and never escaped. To me it's practically canon to be suspicious of the fact that everyone in Star Trek knows they're being watched by Talosians basically all the time. It's kinda like that Voyager episode when they exposed the advanced medical lady who was invisibly torturing the crew.

That was some long downtime, wasn't it? Made me miss posting about yesterday's episode, Obsession. From the synopsis I thought it was gonna be some chintzy "space vampire" story, but it was actually- Well, just because the site was down doesn't mean I didn't write up a (nearly the character limit) post about it. I'll post that in a moment, but I'm using this post to say it's time for today's episode "Wolf in the Fold". See you in an hour or so.
watching Lower Decks while eating a tomato and spinach sandwich on Italian bread. FVVVVVARRRRRRK......
"Obsession" was another incredible story. The driving force of Guilt for a perceived inability to act, and the psycho-emotional examinations we get of both Kirk & Ensign Garrovick really set this apart from "The Deadly Years" & "The Doomsday Device", two stories that this has some noticeable overlap with. The threat of mental examination forces Kirk to lay out the motivations for his decisions in a way that convinces Bones just in time for Chekov to find the thing is leaving orbit - proving the captain's intuition correct. A triumphant moment to contrast against Old Kirk's doddering senility. The relatively lighthearted scene with Nurse Chapel bluffing Garrovick into eating with a fake prescription tape was really neat, especially her candid examination of Kirk's behavior chasing after the creature at Warp 8. I really wish we could get moments like this more often, not just from her but letting the Starfleet Professionalism drop a shade outside of the main trio ribbing eachother. The average crewman's perspective is something we don't get nearly often enough. The set-up of elements with the vents leading to Spock giving the blood-sucking cloud food poisoning is artfully constructed, even if it's somewhat providential for Garrovick to be at the center of things. But that conversation they have in the halls just after it leaves the ship, where Spock's words finally get through to Kirk and he stops the Ensign from letting that self-blame fester in his own mind for another 11 years, that was just really amazing. What I liked most of all was in the climax, where Kirk orders Garrovick back to the ship so he can act as bait and Garrovick tries to karate chop him so he can sacrifice himself, and Kirk fends off the struggle saying "This is no time for heroics, and I don't intend to die here." Amazing little subversion, and it spices up an emergency beam-out that would've felt too identical to the Constellation otherwise.

>>223863216I was a little worried when I saw the writer for this episode was Bloch, the same guy who botched Catspaw, but he's definitely learned his lesson since then because this was a much better ghost story AND a much better comedy. The mystery elements with Scotty and the foggy landscape of Argelius immediately put one in the proper space to expect Jack the Ripper, the empath abilities of the Prefect's wife remain suspect long enough that when they're confirmed legitimate by the ship's computers it becomes another great twist on top of the reveal of Redjac's identity.Knowing how he works, feeding off fear so they shoot the crew up with happy juice, and then occupying all databanks to force it back out of the controls, it's the exact sort of deconstruction Catspaw started out with then quickly abandoned. It's no coincidence that this episode is so much better because we KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING, so reveals like the knife's blade tying back with Redjac's Rigellian nickname and Hengist being his latest false-identity actually WORK. The whole crew's sedation also works out to make the ending not such a downer despite the 3 dead women, especially that brick joke with Kirk knowing a little place and Bones saying "I know it too, let's go".The very best moments had to be the big-ass stunt-double in the bald-cap they kept using for Hengist's action scenes despite them not even being the same height, this followed very closely by Redjac possessing the Prefect only to get immediately nerve-pinched into submission. The earlier seance was also cool, but I enjoyed the comedic stuff more.

>>223851721>>223863231Forgive me. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word "spam".
I have to say that Voyager so far is mogging other Trek shows in interesting ideas for episodes. There have been a couple rehashed ideas but even still, really creative and managed to keep ot interesting. Like B'Elanna being forced to make the prototype robot was like qhen Geordi was taken hostage by Pakleds but the Voyager episode was way better imo
>>223871776Voyager leans more heavily into sci-fi than something like DS9.
>>223871899I don't know about that. Voyager leans heavily into technobabble which is frankly really fucking annoying.
>>223872076Nah
Would you rather>technobabble (but it makes the characters sound like they know how their own ship works)or>DO THE THING! THING'S FUCKED UP! SHIT!
>>223872408tf do you mean "Nah"? They spam the technobabble on this show WAY more than any other.
>>223872432>>technobabble (but it makes the characters sound like they know how their own ship works)After a while of hearing it constantly all it does is remind the viewer of when they were a kid on a playground making shit up playing pretend with their friends and break your sense of immersion. There is a point where it needs to stop.
>>223872432Technobabble is preferable so long as it doesn't get overused and characters are speaking solely in technobabble for an entire conversation.
>>223872480That TPB scene is literally what pops into my head when I'm watching Voyager lmao
>>223872076Nah, I rewatched some DS9 recently and VOY is definitely more sci-fi than DS9, which is very much drama and character-driven. I say that as someone who prefers DS9 to VOY, albeit not as much as I used to.
>>223872433Nah. But I appreciate your efforts to hijack and reorient the original statement into something completely different because of your inherent seethe.
>>223872524I can't "hijack" my own fucking statement you fucking retard. There was no "reorientation" I said Voyager spams technobabble, you said "Nah" and I said Voyager spams technobabble again. Take your meds.
>>223872520Yeah Voyager certainly doesn't have any character bullshit or drama, the Maquis throwing shitfits every 2 seconds over nothing is so scientific.
>>223872544Nah. You tried to hijack my original statement about Voyager being more sci-fi oriented than DS9. I see your anger and I laugh.
>>223872556Oh also don't forget the alien love triangle episodes, that's so science.
>>223872558It's not a a hijack of your original statement it's an implicit refutation of that idea by pointing out that you are tricked by the technobabble spam into thinking it's more "sci-fi" because characters spout more made-up words at you at a faster rate per second than any other Trek show.
>>223847999It's two chambers innit?
>>223872591Nah. Voyager most definitely has far more sci-fi oriented episodes than DS9. It has nothing to do with technobabble.
So far the absolute stupidest thing on Voyager was when a couple retarded Maquis faggots were the one who randomly figured out how to Warp 10 after doing that gay screenwriting trope where one person makes an offhanded comment and then they go "WAIT THAT'S IT!"
He's literally frothing at the mouth and trembling with rage
I think I like DS9 and VOY more than TNG
>>223872591Voyager's episodes are definitely more geared toward sci fi stories on average, rather than political intrigue. Don't be absurd.>>223872630I like that episode, but Tom wasn't a Maquis at this point, he was directly working for Star Fleet. It wasn't randomly figuring it out either, they found a new dilithium variant in an asteroid that allowed them to do it.>>223872747They're about even imo. I like them all. DS9 is probably lowest on my list though. The last season or two is just them squeezing all the grey morality out of it and making it boring for what it was. Still some good eps intermixed, but they fucked it up. That plus a rough first season that felt like cutting room floor TNG eps.Voyager is fun throughout imo, and even the occasional bad ep doesn't drag down a whole season. TNG has a rougher start than VOY, but has maybe the highest highs, but also some of the lower lows.HARD TO SAY.
>>223872845I like most of DS9's first season but it is a little odd that the pilot sets a tone of "this is dark and edgy, the opposite of TNG" but follow it with goofball episodes like Q-Less, Move Along Home, and If Wishes Were Horses>inb4 "Star Trek always has comedy"Later DS9 handles comedy very well, those early attempts were just cringey
>>223873092I also think them trying to shove in as many TNG cameos as they could right off the bat showed they weren't confident that DS9 could stand on its own
>>223873104Bringing in Worf after TNG ended shows they still weren’t confident after several seasons.
>>223873120TNG was just that insanely popular that anything that wasn't TNG was treated with scorn. They could've very easily made 10 seasons of TNG, even though the writers and actors were burnt out after 7.I'll say though that Worf blends in easily with the DS9 cast and doesn't dominate the entire show.
>>223873163>I'll say though that Worf blends in easily with the DS9 cast and doesn't dominate the entire show. Can agree. I think that O'Brien was a good bridge between the two since he wasn't a main cast member in TNG.
>>223873120DSN's ratings were bad. I mean really bad. Execs kept bringing in TNG and even some TOS characters in order to draw more viewers. I even read that there was some friction when Worf was introduced because DSN's staff felt like they were being told there was no confidence in their show. On the other hand, Voyager was gangbusters for UPN. Of course it less raw viewers than TNG/DSN but that's because it wasn't syndicated. For a network show it performed extremely well.
>>223869697...with shran
>>223869697I dunno, I heard he's a slut.
>read old starlog and star trek communicator magazines >most people think ds9 is boring and voyager is rehashed plots>they just want more next generation
>>223873271One thing I read in the badly organized annals of memoryalpha was that ds9 was effectively immune from overt studio interference because of stipulations in the Viacom-Paramount sale. Ds9 probably would have been canceled or majorly retooled if not for that and it's also the reason why the show was given so much latitude. Another thing was that Ds9 and Voy split rights to the lore. Ds9 was given complete command of the alpha/beta/gamma quadrant setting while Voy was given control of the delta quadrant and Borg.
>>223873574>>most people think ds9 is boring and voyager is rehashed plotsand they were right
>>223873699that's completely wrong and you're a fucking retard
>>223873752Nah.
>>223873767give a source for those claims or you're lying out of your ass you dishonest ferengi
>>223872747DS9 is just objectively the best series, warts and all.
>>223873752It isn't. >>223873783>According to Robert Hewitt Wolfe in a tweet dated 28 January 2019, following the premiere of Star Trek: Voyager, a mandate was passed to the writing staffs of both Deep Space Nine and Voyager that the Borg (along with Q, following his single appearance on Deep Space Nine) were only to be used on Voyager while Deep Space Nine retained creative control over the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma Quadrants, which Wolfe called "a fair trade."As for the other stuff I'm not going to spend half an hour digging up every bit but the gist is that DS9's syndicated contracts meant it had to complete its full run, Paramount signed a deal with Berman/Piller giving them tons of autonomy which Viacom couldn't override and Behr once stated that since Viacom/UPN was so busy with Voyager that DS9 was given a lot of leeway. These are all quotes you can easily look up yourself to verify.
>>223873999you ignorant pakledhe didn't say anything about it being a rights issue at all, that would be fucking stupid for the usage of portions of the galaxy to be split between companies, let's be realnot to mention all the times ds9 and voyager use characters and elements from each other
>>223874027Desperate little guy aren't you. It's exactly as I said ds9's writing staff had rights to alpha/beta/gamma quadrant lore while voy's writing staff had it over the delta quadrant and borg. Just because someone is in control of something doesn't mean the other show can't use it with permission or collaboration. You're having to make up shit to be angry and contrary about. Really sad.
>a doyyyyy DS9 and VOY took place on opposite sides of the galaxy, this was because of duh rights!Tellarite swine.
uh oh nutrek spammer melty
This all stemmed from people trying to cope and making up that "legally, it has to be 25% different" bullshit to explain STD looking nothing like the era it was set in, when in reality the producers literally just wanted to visually reboot Star Trek to chase after the imaginary modern audience they always talk about.
>>223874158>now he's actually spamming about nutrekYou called it.

>>223870750I only double-posted yesterday because the site was offline the day before, and I really enjoyed "Obsession".The place I weigh in on the "star trek sex with shran" ritualposting is that I spent a lot of time on Homestuck General before it got banned from /co/, where people would say things like "wwalks into thread" "F4RTS" and "the dolorosa's long long legs" all the time. Shranposting is a drop in the barrel compared to what went on back then, and anyone who takes umbrage with it doesn't know real hell(strider). But I understand that /tv/ has a different board culture, so your initial response makes sense, especially since I was originally posting with the name on all the time before I realized (was convinced of) how annoying that can be.
