What will collector fags do when there won't be any players left?
>>
>>223872818

how are they going to sell 4k TVs now ?
>>
>>223872818
they'll pay more for uber rare versions and debate over which obsolete player is actually the best
>>
you know other companies make bluray players, right? I have a Funai.
>>
>>223872818
They still make NES compatible consoles.
>>
whats thepoint of buying a blue ray player when a ps3 costs less and plays games?
I mean even the ps4 would cost less then a seperate blue ray player and still can play games
>>
>>223872818
third party blu Ray players
>>
>>223872818
It's no secret that Sony hates physical media. Panasonic makes the best value 4k Blu-ray players anyway. They'll continue to be produced as long as people buy 4k discs, which is the best way to watch a movie at home.
>>
>>223873266
>third party blu Ray players
i thought blu rays are sony patented
they are the only ones who can use them and everyone else has to resort to dvds
>>
>>223872818
couldn't you make your own with a computer BD drive?
>>
>>223873222
yeah but this can play uhd. ultra high def. ULTRA
>>
>>223873035
Sony sold their TV business to Choina
>>
>>223873266
pretty much this
buy a 'sorny' or a 'panamonic' and it will even let you play pirated movies
>>
>>223873401
the ps4 cant?
>>
>>223873435
no. you'd need ps5 for uhd blurays
>>
>>223873435
not in the ultra magnetic way a bluray player can
>>
>>223872818
Sincere question. Why do collectors rely on blu-ray players when they can download remuxes and store all their shit on hard drives?
>>
>>223872818
>What will collector fags do when there won't be any players left?
Sony is just doing their usual KWAB thing of getting BTFO so SYBAU unc
people still buy VCRs
>>

I bet you dont grasp the difference between having sex with a girl, and paying for the pornhub sub

because my 4k UHD of Big Trouble makes my tiny bedroom sound like IMAX and discs are 10 bucks on ebay
>>
>>223873827 (me)
you give up audio on rips, and it's such a large part of the experience
>>

I have already bought and stored five extra just in case. Are you poor?

I pirate and buy discs

The oldest, cheapest console with a 4k UHD Blu-ray drive is an Xbox One S.
Sony didn't bother to support UHD at all during that gen

for me having my favorites on disc is preferable because i don't have to wonder and the features and the like are a plus as well as packaging.
I wouldn't keep some massive collection, but I am grabbing films I truly enjoy.
>>
>$300 for a 4k bluray player
>$20 for a 4k movie
no wonder physical media is dying
>>
>>223873305
You can play Blu-rays on an xbox
>>
>>223873958
I use to have this console and its player requires an app to play the movies. Half the time it glitched or fucked up so I got a dedicated 4k player instead.

>>223874037
Yep, it’s expensive as fuck. I mostly buy Blu-rays because the 4k discs are usually shitty movies being re-released by arrow video or another boutique label. They charge fucking 40 bucks for a film like Maniac in 4k. Don’t get me wrong I like the movie but this is the type of slop that gets put out on a regular basis.
>>
>>223874037
>$400,000 computer
>$5,000 per hour internet connection
still think pirating is cool?
>>
>>223874022
i think that is good. i don't really get movie collecting. it's not like one will ever have them all lol. but "hey i really like this movie and will watch it many times so i'll buy it on disc" makes much sense.
>>
>>223874037
Anon, VHS tapes were like $50-100 in the early and mid 80's and about $20-25 through out the 90's. DVD's were $25-30 in the late 90's and early 2000s. Media is dying because it's shit and there's too much of it now.
>>
>>223874113
For me it the legacy of having the film so I can show others. The problem is most people think it’s weird to have a movie collection and get bored to tears when I show them movies I love. The vast majority of people would rather watch TikTok videos or the sportsball game.

If you're in at least a moderately sized city, then you should be able to find a used media store which will have 4k Blu-rays for cheaper than $20. They've been around for long enough that there is an abundance of them.
>>
>>223874118
>Went to a charity shop the other day
>Picked up Gladiator on DVD because I had a quota that needed completed
>Still had the original sticker on from when it was bought - £17.99

It always feels a bit weird to me because I totally bypassed buying DVDs. Some guy in the street did pirated ones so I just got them off him. VHS tapes felt more expensive because by the time I could get those reliably (pirated) DVD was already taking over. And it took a lot longer to copy a VHS tape than it did to burn a DVD.
>>
scalpers are already jacking up the price

Doesn't come with the menu screen that plays literally every memorable spoiler scene rapidly in 3 second sequences - that alone makes them completely BTFO anything you buy

As much as I hate to say it (especially thanks to newer codecs like AV1), you're average movie going normie won't notice compression artifacts and you can bring the bitrates down real low. To be fair, they were always overkill on BD and UHD-BD and more often than not the encoding is pretty poor and the hight bitrate was just them brute forcing an encode.
>>
>>223876321
Explain to the folks at home how to build a blu ray player with proprietary copy-protection keys and DTS/Dolby video encoders
>>
>>223874564
Streaming is not UHD
>Commercial streaming services compress data by roughly 4x to 5x for video and up to 30x to 50x for audio compared to a 4K Blu-ray
Enjoy watching huge chunky artifacts whenever the screen is dark or there is a waterfall or confetti or fire works. Shit turns into pixel vomit.
>>
>>223876369
again youre moving the goalposts. trying to argue a remux is same thing as owning the disc and yet your only argument is 'yeah w-well those things on the disc are STUPID!"

Yeah they won't notice until there's fireworks or something and the entire screen turns into 240p pixel diarrhea for a few seconds

Pretty much all the major streaming services already encode In a way that already does that. You can perform all the aggressive optimizations you want, but if you don't give your encoder enough information to work with, the quantization becomes so aggressive that the video just collapses. It doesn't help that streaming services probably have aggressively low maxrate. You can do 2 pass encoding all you want, but it'll do nothing if you tell the encoder it can't go any higher than 6mbps.

Once they're swallowed up, your only recourse is to rip them and then stream the files from your PC to your TV. Sony is a shitty company, but they made some good products. My VCR that still works from the late '90s is a Sony.

The entire reason why Sony is discontinuing Bluray support is because the manufacturers and factories handling the bluray drive has pivoted to making AI adjacent stuff, something about memory chips. >>
>>223877647

The factories for the laser is at least known to have switched to something AI related. It was significant enough to warrant Sony killing off physical media support in the next Playstation.

>>223877346
Sure, but it would be technically feasible to put one of these in every home computer. That way everyone would have all of these pieces of our history, and you could even have a system to show which had been altered (since people would want to edit or delete 'problematic' works).

There are plenty of other ways to get artists paid for their work, this would only make it somewhat harder for a corporation to make money from it (and even then only in so far as they want to continue their shitty business practices).
>>
>>223877647
it's one bluray disc factory in Austria:
https://salzburg.orf.at/stories/3360879/
they used to make 600'000 discs daily but they're shrinking to 10% of that and reconfiguring the rest of the space to make optical lenses.
interviewee gives the example of some sort of tiny projector lens for cars but some speculate that they are making the optics for etching computer chips.

Anything AI related is raking in massive amounts of money right now. That's all that matters to them.
>>
>>223878489
what. the storage required for that would be super costly. if you're talking about a storage that everyone can access that's not everyone having all these files on their own computer

for your model to work, people in the industry need to stop being autistic and be their catalogs and share them with other streaming services and get a royalty like in the music industry. then we can have a few platforms where you can access pretty much every film tv series/film, much like you can have access to pretty much every song on YT, Spotify on Apple
>>
>>223873385
You could for ripping discs. Actually getting disc playback to function properly on a computer using a drive for 4K discs is a huge pain in the ass though
>>
>>223878875
>>223878898
no supposedly, Panasonic are still making - for now
then there are generic Chinese brands like this: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/laser-4k-ultra-hd-multi-region-blu-ray-player - they actually have a slight advantage in their dvd and regular bluray is region free
>>
>>223878724
>>223878979

If it were just a matter of 'make it available for almost no cost' then we'd already have it, the torrent system is easily robust enough to provide this with relatively few 'seeds' staying online permanently. In fact this was a solved problem even fifteen years ago, arguably twenty. Since then the name of the game for distributors was in putting roadblocks (whether legal or technical) in the way of people accessing content this easily.

I mean we're right at the point now that we could do that on local storage. It's already been possible to have more than you could ever watch in a lifetime on local storage for a while, now it's possible to have everything you might ever want to watch as well. I'd be confident this is why they're pulling up the ladder on affordable home 'compute' in favor of data centres, to make this as economically difficult as it is legally difficult.

It would be fine to have low resolution video for much of this desu.

which is fraction of what is being pumped into it which is only going to go up
it is not scalabe, it is not producing a profit, it requires more investments to come from somewhere and it will be our retirement funds, its fossil fuel consumption and water consumption is horrendous, the noise is impossible to live near, it is a pyramid scheme that will come down just like the subprime mortgages and dotcom bubble and S&L scandal before it

>>223879049

>>
>>223878846
It is one of the only major ones. In addition to the Austrian one, there is a large one in Germany and one in Mexico and pretty much 95% of all optical discs are pressed in one of these locations. There are some smaller ones around the world, but most disc production goes through one of those locations, so one of them drastically reducing output and pivoting to making lenses is a pretty big deal.
>>
>>223879044
>I mean we're right at the point now that we could do that on local storage

It's an awful thing. The whole business model now is about developing new and better ways at locking people out, it's perverse. It would be awful even if they weren't using it to delete and edit parts of it, but they're doing that too.

Yes, but think of all the dolts who copy what they see and damage society. Some of that will end.

>>223879753
Honestly I don't think that's a real problem.

You're saying that they should start censoring history to prevent people from watching tv & television that people might copy and in so doing damage society?

Even if it was an issue, having all content available to everyone (or even just everything from before some generous cut-off period say 20 years before present) would produce such immense and incalculable benefits that it would easily counter-balance any potential negative effects.
>>
>>223879311
The exclusion is the point. Big Tech wants everyone locked into their shortform algorithms so they get infinite watch time. It’s already happening with Netflix reporting people can’t even watch a 30 minute program anymore.

unsurprisingly this low IQ place doesn't understand why physical media totally collapsing is a bad thing. most of all of the shit you've pirated originated from physical media. without that we'll now be at the mercy of whatever gets released on streaming platforms (if at all) and that often means butchered/heavily censored cuts of media.

also, what does this have to do with torrents? it's got to do with streaming versus owning physical media and streaming wins out every time. do you own a car-hold filled with CDs or something so you will always have access to the song you like? is that high IQ or just being an autistic hoarder

No it isn't. A single movie in 4K is 80GB on average. IMDB says there are about 600,000 total feature length films in existence. You'd need 48 petabytes of storage just for the films alone. Even if you re-encoded everything so it looks like shit and got it down to 5GB a movie, you would still need 3 PB of storage, which would cost you $50k just for the hard drives at today's prices.

When Vader's shuttle is docking in the beginning of the film, you can see stormtroopers a well as Imperial technicians actively welding parts of the second Death Star, on a big screen.
You can barely make them out on a 32" CRT, but it's not great, but with a 4K copy on an UHD screen, (of about 50") it's very close to the theatrical presentation, depending on the film reel's copy's generation and condition.

Weird discussion here. One anon says that streaming a movie with a filesize of 700 mb would be absolutely fine and no higher res is ever needed and another anon complains about 4K streams in reality only being 720p and therefore not worth saving or pirating.

I collect tv-shows myself and have a collection of about 1900 shows. Most of them are in 1080p.
I have compared AVC BluRay rips vs streaming countless times and depending on the streaming service, the difference to the uncompressed BluRay is sometimes more or less visible. Both in 4K and 1080p.

The interesting thing is, that very often but not in all cases, the 4K and 1080p stream from the same streaming platform are identical in detail.
I researched on this and found out, that most Hollywood productions, TV-Shows and/or Movies are done with 4K and even 8K cameras, but that they in production downscale to 1080p when creating/mixing the master.
So that's why a 4K and a 1080p stream look identical in very many cases. And the worst thing is that they even use this 1080p source material to produce 4K BluRays.
In my eyes that's an absolute ripoff.

For me this is the main reason i'm not buying any 4K BluRays and why i only download 1080p Rips from well known release groups that source their material from the various streaming services.
Most of these release groups source the 4K stream if it's of better quality than the 1080p and render it down to 1080p with a high bitrate so the quality loss is as minimal as possible.
When comparing the release groups 4K down to 1080p render with a 1080p stream that is not rendered down by a release group, the down rendered is of better quality.
But this only applies to Amazon.
From Netflix or Hulu this is meaningless to be done, because their 4K streams are of a much lower bitrate and thus quality than their Amazon counterpart and there is no visible difference between their 4K and 1080p streams.
>>
>>223887110
the worst part about downloading a streaming vs bluray rip is poor audio quality. 1080 is fine for me. 4k is overrated. also i havent paid for media in 13 years and im not starting now.
>>
They will still make the drives but you will pay $10,000 for a solid aluminum DVD transport from a boutique brand
>>
>>223887138
>the worst part about downloading a streaming vs bluray rip is poor audio quality. 1080 is fine for me. 4k is overrated.
Yes, but depending on the streaming service, you can get pretty good audio quality nowadays.
Many of the newer releases are E-AC-3 @ 768 kbps with 48 Khz samplerate in 5.1 surround.
Most of the releases like 5 years old or never in my case are E-AC3 or AC-3 @ 640 kbps in 32 or 48 Khz.
I also happen to have some releases with Stereo AAC 128 kbps.

Parts of my upper comment aged like milk in the sun as i found out right now.
Amazon seems to have limited down their Bitrates quiet a lot recently, while Amazon seems to have risen theirs significantly.
See pic related:

I have also noticed myself, that stream rips coming from Apple are of superb quality, no matter if 4K or 1080p. But they don't have that much content.
So most of what i have is from Netflix and Amazon.

It's tragic but sadly it was always going to go this way. At the end of the day short-sighted consumers will almost always choose convenience over everything else and a digital-only future massively benefits corporations and their shareholders. Most normies probably can't even tell the difference between an actual physical blu-ray/UHD movie playing from a disc and the heavily compressed 1080p/""4k"" bit streams they watch through their streaming services, and if they can they don't care since they're also content with just listening through their TV speakers and $100 soundbars.

Btw, something I don't think a lot of /v/tards have realized yet is that Sony and Microsoft accelerated this future when they started to offer separate digital-only consoles without disc drives which they priced $100 cheaper, and idiot gamers bit hook-line-and-sinker. We can actually thank Phil Spencer and his Netflix-for-gaming plans since it was the Xbox One that offered a discless console first, Sony didn't follow suit until the PS5 generation, just like when MS first introduced paid-online during the 360 era and Sony jumped onboard with the PS4.
>>
>>223887517
What percentage of those are even good?
If you ask my wife, she likes these daily soaps that in my book are lowest tier. Both quality wise and from the actors performances on average.
If you ask me, i like action, crime and science fiction and some fantasy titles.

Maybe you're the one who likes TV-shows that are woke and are about gay couples and muuh stronkkk nigger wymyn. I don't know.
Taste is diffrent and highly subjective.
So i can't really answer this question.
I also download stuff that others want me to download because they can't get it themselfes.

My criteria is basically to avoid pure woke titles like TV-shows that are about gay and LGBT faggotry and other woke shit as the main plot.

To avoid it 100% is pretty much impossible since the last 10 to 15 years. Since it's part of the citeria for getting productions financed, they have to have woke shit implemented to a certain level.
Mai roles played by niggers or wymyn for example or IT-experts being POC and shit.

But i do have a lot of older stuff also starting from the 60's.
