I wonder how they will handle the whole 'people with multiple personality disorder are actually several people who all deserve legal personhood'. It's an interesting idea in text to show how modern psychology will be viewed as barbaric in the future but that will NOT fly well on the screen.
>>
>>223880220
Well they’ll have plenty of time to delve into it since it’s a show format. They could do one episode for each character and they can delve into that topic for that one character with the cybernetically split brain so she’s got four people in her mind technically. I think her name was Susan James.
>>
Blomkamp spells "dead in the water." Watts has been on about this collaboration for years. It's coming out right after Blomkamp's Aliens sequel.

I would like more Sunflower Cycle, and his latest short story is so outside of anything else in sci-fi that its only due to diversity and inclusion that they're not throwing Hugos and Nebulas at him. Its about a Neuralink world where people play MMOs through their connected brains, but the bandwidth is throttled to keep the individual consciousnesses individual. The throttle is released for only 20 seconds then quickly reengaged, but in that brief window, a super entity emerged and began filing seemingly unstoppable legal actions while sowing memes into society to make sure people are plugged back in and it becomes reconstituted. "The 21 Second God" or something.

The 21 seconds God is actually set in the same universe as Blindsight
>>
>>223880417
The 21 Second God’s been a short story you can read for a while.
https://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/fiction/the-twenty-one-second-god/

Colonel Jim Moore (father of Siri Keeton) is a part of this short story so the 21SG is technically part of the Firefall series so we will probably see something alluding to it in the show.

There’s also some hints that the Sunflowers universe is still part of the Firefall universe just in the distant future.

Personally I’m excited for the short story lore to get melded into the show as well, because outside of the spaceship Theseus the cyberpunk dystopia on Earth is also just as interesting in the lore. There’s sequel Echopraxia definitely gets into it more. There’s all sorts of hiveminds and zombie soldiers battling it out on the planet - some lead by swarms of real brains and others lead by AIs but no one knows what their motives are because their thinking power is so beyond humanity’s. My theory is that the 21SG is related to the aliens and not part of the corporate/hivemind/AI sphere of influence. It was the aliens hacking our brains for 21 seconds and scoping us out or even planting a timebomb in our psyches.

Only redditards would think a breakthrough technology that lets blind people see and quadriplegics move and communicate is somehow dystopian. Reddit actually wants the tech to fail simply because it's headed by Elon. This essentially proves the commonly held belief that if Trump somehow cured cancer, libs would find a reason to undermine, delegitimize, or otherwise protest the cure.

I love Blindisight and I think Watts is a good sci-fi writer, despite having dogshit prose, he has cool ideas and nice woorldbuilding, but holy shit he's fucking insufferable irl
I'm from a bumfcuk eastern yuro shithole, and he was on a tour here in some bookstore, promoting a new book or whatever a year or two ago and remember watching one of those shitty morning TV interviews with him, where he talked like 2 minutes about his actual writing and started sperging about Trump for the next 8. In a fucking eastern european bookstore while himself being Canadian? Who gives a fuck about Trump?
Anyway, I can ignore someone being retarded or "woke" if their art is good and thats usually not an issue for his books, but I can't expect him to run a fucking modern show and not being obnoxiously political with it. Especially together with fucking Neil "POOR PEOPLE GOOD" Blokamwhatever

Canadian boomers are hyper delusional about the state of their country and its power relative to the US. Canada had a worse economy than Mississippi, capital investment is not existant, inflation is the worst in the G7, jobs and businesses are lost by the thousands every month, Indian extortion gangs are running rampant, nobody under 40 will ever be able to buy a home or retire, but as long as the government and media keep pointing to boogeyman Trump, none of that matters and Canada is somehow the best, strongest nation on Earth and could totaly take on the US in an armed conflict.

Chappie was the exact point everyone had to admit District 9 was lightning in a bottle. Blomkamp has one setting: filthy warehouse, robot whining, PMCs, and "what if apartheid but aliens/AI" painted on with a roller. Blindsight needs sterile existential dread, not a crying toaster in a scrapyard.
>>
>>223888955
Aliums attack cyberpunk earth but it's all a misunderstanding because they are non sentient organic robots who only attacked because all the radio chatter from earth drove them insane. Also vampires and like other anons said the characters are terribly written diverse quirk chunguses with a side order of cringe goreslop. The scifi concepts are cool though.
>>
>>223890017
It didn’t drive them insane. They’re basically a giant anti-consciousness amoeba looking to destroy consciousness the same way a white blood cell wants to destroy a virus. It’s just biological programming.
>>
>>223888955
Intelligence without consciousness works and can be extremely frightening.
Also Cyberpunk Earth is full of AIs everywhere and to continue relevant we start to chrome (to borrow from Cyberpunk 2077) ourselves in order to interpret AI outputs. To be "normal" is to be "baseline". It's an incredible book, but Watts prose can be hell.
Another thing: the coolest vampires ever, so cool in fact that if you put two of them together they fucking kill each other immediately.

>>
>>223891218
What a retard
>>
>>223891281
here comes the chud
>>
>>223891281
Nukes are not the solution you make it out to be. In terms of implementation they are basically plateaued at where they should be. They require dirty waste storage that are impossible to achieve practically (although nuke proponents will totally assure you that isn’t the case - even though we have hundreds of examples of storage not being done properly and causing environmental issues), they can’t ramp up or ramp down based off demand so all they’re good for is providing some base level energy, they are incredibly costly and time consuming to build, and they promote centralization and secrecy in power distribution which is antithetical to where we want to be as a society.
>>
>>223891375
To add: they also promote the dirtiest type of mining (uranium mining), increase the proliferation of nuclear weapons (don’t let nuke proponents tell you reactor grade plutonium can’t be used in bombs, this has been proven wrong in many cases where dirty bombs have been found such as in India and Pakistan), and prop up states like Russia who still supply the world with uranium, uranium enrichment services, and nuclear waste dumping sites (aka a random island in Siberia where barrels are just thrown into a pile - like all of France’s waste).
>>

France literally has the cheapest, lowest carbon and most reliable power grid in Europe because they just went ahead and built a full nuclear grid before environmentalists thought to step in and make building nuclear plants impossible
But more specifically if you're going to measure nuclear plants in "lives cost" you're a fucking moron because nuclear plants have killed fewer people than any other power source, including the rare earth mining for solar panels
Coal plants literally emit more radiation than nuclear plants
>>
>>223894865
>France
Dumps all its waste in Siberia with no proper containment. Also has low water levels in its rivers putting their entire energy infrastructure at risk.

>coal radiation
The study was measuring radiation from smokestacks. Nuclear power plants emit most radiation through their wastewater, spent fuel, and other reactor waste, not their smoke/steam stacks. This is an oft misquoted study - which is by design since those that commissioned it had no intention to make a fair comparison and those that quote it have no intention of reading properly.

>>
>>223895032
nuclear waste is so trivial to deal with that bringing it up shows nothing but bad faith. you could store all of it in a soccer field. and you can re-use almost all of it anyway, if you wanted to, you'd just need different plants to do it and those are more expensive than just building more of the existing ones so nobody does for now. but 90% of the "nuclear waste" is actually just more "nuclear fuel".

one of the few good things about the AI scourge is that it will finally put some *real* pressure on developing different power than just coal and petroleum. shit like windfarms and solar is legit a psychotic fever dream compared to nuclear. every single person who supports that shit instead of nuclear is a paid actor or a moron.

Blindsight would make a good movie but not a good tv shoe. You would have to merge it with Echopraxia and have all the plot threads run simultaneously to fill out a tv season.
>>
>>223899183
Absolutely not. It has to be a four-to-six episode mini series. The book is dense as fuck to fit into a movie and a three-hour long movie would make any audience bolt.
>>
>>223899183
In lieu of a movie I think a show is still pretty good, and if they make it kind of like a Chernobyl type of format it could work. I half suspect that it will actually incorporate parts of Echopraxia. Peter Watts has had a lot of time since Blindsight to pad up his world and he’s added lots of tidbits through short stories as well. He’s been pretty consistent with it so I’m sure he’ll want it incorporated for his lore cohesion. We’ll probably get more Siri Keeton/Jim Miller backstory moments.

I was waiting for a bit more than TEN FUCKING YEARS for more Firefall and Watts published 21 Second God, finally, in the last year. He's not consistent at all. I hope he doesn't turn into another GRRM, although in his case it's because Firefall doesn't pay shit, so I kind of understand him. kek

The main issue with nuclear, even assuming you solve the waste and construction cost issues, is that you just go back to having a centralized power grid again, which is very vulnerable for failure or sabotage.
A terrorist can fly an airplane into a nuclear power plant, but they can't wreck 200 windfarms easily.
And some power outage of a single nuclear plant can blackout millions of people. Its high technoogy that is difficult and expensive to maintain. Putting all your eggs in one basket is always dumb.

Nuclear has its uses, but the overall goal should be to build reliable, self sustained energy grids that can be maintained by the local population and are robust against failure and sabotage, which nuclear clearly isnt.
Pretending this is some either-or question misses the point entirely, the switch to a sustainable energy grid will need several sources, nuclear is part of the solution, but its not some miracle cure

The Core Premise: Blindsight and Consciousness

• The Neurological Condition: In real-world neurology, blindsight is a phenomenon where people with damage to the visual cortex can respond to visual stimuli (such as navigating obstacles or guessing the direction of an object) without consciously seeing them.
• The Novel's Extension: Watts scales this up to the entire human mind. He questions whether complex thought, language, and problem-solving can—and do—happen completely unconsciously, while consciousness merely sits back, takes credit, and rubber-stamps decisions already made by the subconscious.

Key Themes in the Novel

• Consciousness as a Liability: Self-awareness requires massive metabolic energy, introduces doubt, empathy, and emotional bottlenecks, and slows down reaction times.
• The Alien "Rorschach" and "Scramblers": The expedition crew aboard the Theseus encounters an alien intelligence that is hyper-intelligent, capable of complex technological feats and fluent linguistic mimicry, yet completely devoid of self-awareness (functioning like philosophical zombies).
• The Evolutionary Dead End: Watts suggests that intelligence scales up while consciousness scales down—meaning the smartest entities in the universe may not be conscious at all.

also, the vampire is cool.(historic man was easy pray to vampires, but with the invention of technology and buildings and right angles {crosses} vampires became extinct because they have extreme OCD to right angles)

Same. It’s much harder to read and feels like a blur at some parts (especially at Icarus station) but that’s really the point since your perspective is from a “baseline” human and everything is happening at a cognitive level beyond that. It’s worth it though for all the world building and the great ending. I’m really excited for Omniscience to bring it all together. I have a feeling humanity’s kinda fucked. I also have a feeling the weird monsters alluded to in Freeze Frame Revolution are the Rorschach-ians that have taken over most of the galaxy (universe?).
