For years I've pondered what makes a scary zombie, and what doesn't?
>>
>>223897591
Zombies aren't scary. The horror in a zombie movie is the reveal of true human nature when there is no more order.
>>
>>223897591

Zombies are a looming defeat.
A shambling tide where our numbers drop while theirs grow.
They are more tuned to dread and hopelessness than fear, all attempts to change that through "fast zombies" or "infected" miss the point.

Sadly this does mean that the best utilisation for zombies is drama between people.
>>
>>223897655
this, it's why the crossed and the rage virus infected are so unnerving. zombies are a reminder of what happens when humans stop caring about morality but by themselves they're not as scary unless you delve into body horror but i'd say by now most people are numb to it.

I've always found zombies to be the scariest monsters. Undead flesh eating humans triggers every primal fear in me. I genuinely couldn't finish the Resident Evil 2 remake because I found it so scary and intense
>>
>>223898004
He's right though. That was the original terror of zombies, the fact they can't be stopped or put down, they just keep shambling and rising again.
That's how they were originally sold and sown in the original public consciousness. It's why black MTG creatures had regenerate.

>>223897591
What makes them immediately revulsive and repulsive I think are the visible signs of disfigurement, dismemberment, and rot. Like a segment of a leg that had rotted away exposing pure bone, or a segment of a neck or torso with the spinal cord exposed. Something unwholesome and unclean. You see this depicted still fairly effectively in grotesque art.
But yes psychologically it's their unstoppable, viral nature which poses an existential threat like necromorphs of Dead Space or Tyranids in 40k, just slow (in a galactic sense for scifi) ever expanding shambling hordes.
But yes I know this is THAT thread and I got baited.

Its not in a bad way doe.
Zombie as a genre is the only place of fiction where beating a fellow human with an inhumane method is permissable or 'morally' allowed. Its a safe edgy situation for those who wants to channel and project their violent desire in fictional media because in real life, deep down, people hate each other and they want each other to die a horrible death (because we are sadists, okay?); religion and laws forbid people from killing each other, and the only way for them to kill people was in self defense situation. This is why zombie kinos started to become fun the moment its protagonist lose their fear and ganged up with other survivers to fight back, shooting up the zombies, and kill them in the most satisfying way as possible - because you want to see them beat up those already-dead-people and grant them 'a merciful death'
>>
>>223898257

>>223897591
the standard zombies
>can't be reasoned with
>look spooky
>can't be killed unless you destroy their brains
>if they bite/scratch you it's basically over
>if they kill you it's painfully slow
>the world is fucked up and hopeless
that combination of factors + some other shit
>>
>>223897816
kino.
>>
>>223898084
If you keep finding corpses with holes blown through the skulls, you'll get scared imagining all the weird reasons that it may have happened. Once you see how a gun works, the fear of the unknown will lessen.
>>
>>223898404
-- its safe edgy because its not entirely reveal your true self as a sadist; the zombies are basically dead people and they want to eat your brain. Those two are the main reasons why killing them is fully justified: you want to moralfag by granting them a peaceful death and you have the rights to defend yourself. That way you can leave the kinotarium after the kino ends without feeling guilty over seeing zombie massacre because those survivors are 'doing the right thing' to themselves and those zombies.
The movie pleasure your inner sadism but it also said to (You) that youre not a sadist who loves to see your fellow humanlike shaped monster getting chainsawed in their head and got split into two or whatever
>>
>>223898204
that game has superb atmosphere, zombie films really struggle with that, they can't build the tension and horror
>>
>>223897659
lol that human wave would break and crush their own bones in seconds transforming into pile of shit. few minutes and all zombies become incapasitated.
>>
>>223898204
ngl it pisses me off when the outbreak just started and the zombies already look rotted
>>
>>223897591
Rotting and/or mutilated walking corpses. Design really is key, finding the right kind of actual fresh mutilated walking carcass, or the right amount of "rotten".
This, mixed with them posing an actual threat besides the eventuality of the never ending undead horde. Either through them being almost indestructible, and posing a threat as simply a detached hand scratching you, or a drop of blood getting in your mouth. Or through them being fast and/or capable of super-human feats, because taking damage means nothing to them.
That being said, the Dawn of the Dead remake and 28 Days Later are the only zombie movies that have ever really scared me, and that I found genuinely exciting. It might be because I saw them when I was 12/13 and thought they were really kick ass back then, but I still like them a lot now.
>>
Fast zombies are terrifying. I can’t run dude to a bad knee injury
>>
>>223897591
I don't know if they can be scary, because they aren't unknown and mysterious anymore, and they are predictable. There can, however, be movies where there is a single zombie and there is some buildup and tension, but when you get into multiple zombies, then it's like a totally different type of movie imo. Also, the only thing zombies really do that is creepy is eat people, so I guess the more realistic/violent it is watching someone get hopelessly ripped apart, the more scary/unsettling it might be. Not very many zombie movies do this right, though. Usually it's just a bunch of quick jump cuts, someone reacting and then they move on, so you never have the chance to soak in the loss.

One thing that's not often commented on is the smell that zombies would have. Blood, bile, internal waste, shit in their pants from when they died...the smell alone would involve a primal sense of dread.
>>
Return of the Living Dead zombies are the scariest. They live eternally and always feel pain unless satiated by eating the brains of the living. They can't be killed and burning them just spreads them faster. Having them all over is essentially real hell on Earth. At least in normal zombies if you died, you're gone. In Return, you're still you and condemned to an immortal life of pain.

>>
>>223897591
Zombies would be much more scary if they raped. If they put their puss leaking goopy flesh into a man's anus and thrusted without care or consideration for the health of their victims.
>>
>>223899585
>Once you know how they work and how to defeat ect they are not scary anymore.
Not all zombies are the same nor are they all defeatable. One of the key aspects is that no one figures it out fast enough before everything has crumbled down.
>HUMANS twist
That's going to always be a thing. Humans would never work perfectly in a crisis scenario like this unless they're already in a military unit, gang, or tribe. They're going to have differing ideas, different trusts, different capabilities. It's actually one of the key aspects of the zombie story. They are a mindless horde unconcerned with their own survival or anything but eating. The humans are divided, all trying to survive and achieve their own end. Even if 9/10 are working together, one person can screw them all over. You take that out and it may as well be robots versus zombies
>>
>>223899892

That's literally how it's always been ever since NotLD. Romero stated in interviews that zombies were just the backstory for the human conflicts in his movies and that on their own without the human element they would be very boring. It's funny how /tv/ unironically still thinks Robert Kirkman invented this trope in TWD and keeps throwing around accusations of pretentiousness when he was just following the template the literal pioneer of the zombie horror film set.
>>
>>223897591
This part was actually scary and I have no idea why. Maybe it was the dim lighting or something, or the fact that she ran. It was more unnerving than any zombie flick i've seen. Dawn remake was actually pretty solid in terms of spookiness.

>>223897655
There's a way to make them scary but no filmmaker outside Romero has been able to do it. [REC] managed to do it, and Black Summer had some good moments.

It went full retard sometimes, but there were aspects of MadS that were unsettling. The ending, and the scene during the house party when the main dude was becoming infected.

nta, but I think I know what he means.

We’re suffering from fantasy saturation. Whether you’re talking about horror, capeshit, sci-fi, or swords and dragons, it’s all just different flavors of fantasy fiction. Back in the day, such films were comparatively rare because they took so much more effort to do, and even when you put the effort in, they mostly looked ridiculous (or at least fantastical) even to a contemporary audience. Sure, people are willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of a good story, but nobody thought that closeup of an iguana with horns glued to its head was really a dinosaur. Since there was less exposure to the fantastic, it had greater impact. Compounding that is the fact that on top of having the technology to produce a glut of fantasy/sci-fi/horror/etc., we’re sitting on a century’s worth of pop culture. These days, if you really want to have an impact, you need a unique angle and a really good story, otherwise it’s not even going to break the thick skin we’ve all developed to greater and lesser degrees.
>>
What an odd cover choice
>>
>>223903655
I just wish we got more silent zombies. I think zombies that don’t moan and snarl and growl would be creepy as hell. Think of how spooky it would be if it took them day/weeks to deteriorate to the point where their coordination starts to suffer. You could walk right up on one and not even know it until it turns on you.
>>

>have massive duffel bag of ammo from Andy's store with them

>the camera was dropped but you never hear screams from the survivors.
>any zombies that float from the mainland towards the island would be picked apart into a skeleton by the abundant marine life

Nope. Maybe in the reddest of states, but I doubt it. In my state only grandfathered ones are allowed to keep and use, but you absolutely cannot sell them. Yes, my state specifically banned full-auto for everyone else forever in the 90s.
>>
>>223897591
That they're relatively easy to deal with and avoid but you still can't make a single mistake and will eventually have to sleep at some point. Also nobody wants to see their dead best friend walking around and getting eaten alive really hurts.
>>
Zombie swarms, simple as. Can't get them all if you don't have enough ammo and they keep coming at you.
>>
>>223903988
Focusing solely on the tactical side of this issue and ignoring logistics autism, you wouldn't want automatic weapons anyways. They're horribly inefficient, which is fine if you have MIC reliably supplying you with infinite ammo but will get you killed in a situation where every bullet has to count. The only practical use for them in a zombie apocalypse would be funneling herds into narrow kill zones and mowing them down.
>>
>>223902471
they'd probably be scared shitless of humans if they became intelligent and try to tard wrangle the ones that aren't smart yet away from us

>>
>>223904156
>only in the reddest of states
You may want to google FFL. With a proper one you can convert new weapons to full auto too. Yes it’s for law enforcement but if you want to get the proper license nothing it stopping you. How do tou think CRT/SWAT teams get their weapons? You think a magic armament ferry drops them under their pillows at night? The department gets them through FFLs.

I never claimed it was easy for the average citizen. We’re talking about the ability to procure full autos during a zombie apocalypse you massive faggot and that was the context I was replying under.
>>
>>223904344
You don't seem to understand that my state is stricter than Germany and you may not ever do that here. Unless you got one pre-new-ban in the 90s added to the 1986 one, you can't ever get one, unless you're a cop or military, straight up. I thought we were taking about civilians getting them for a zombie outbreak, so if it happened, I can't legally get them, ever.

>he calls me a name
Dude, lighten up. You're the one who misunderstood anyway.

Man, this board is just completely shameless talking about movies they obviously didn't watch huh? The main conflict of NOTLD revolves around Ben and Cooper butting heads about how their group should handle the situation and it turns out if they had just listened to Cooper about staying in the basement until rescue arrived they would've made it through the night. And despite what the remake lovers say Barbara's useless character that needed constant babysitting was a driving force of tension too turning her into dollar store Ripley was the wrong move. Ego and hubris aka human nature is what ultimately led to their downfall not the zombies.

When I think horror, I generally think more than just slasher shit. I know the gore typically lumps it into the horror category, but those are technically just suspense thrillers with a more garish coat. Hell, two of the most popular “slashers” are both inarguably superhuman.

>This part was actually scary and I have no idea why.
Its scary because the early stage zombies just look like blood-smeared humans, so its hard to tell a zombie apart until they start running at you.
The later mummified dried up grey zombies are ironically far less scary because they look less like humans.

You're right it had nothing to do with zombies at all, genius.
You're nothing but malicious btw. Enjoy missing out on everything cool over it.
>>
>>223904540
The zombies are almost always set dressings in zombie media, they're just an excuse for conflict between humans and are almost never the main focus. The horror in these movies comes both from within and outside but mostly the former.

It's hilarious that you even typed that. I hope you're trolling. lol

One thing that’s almost always a huge part of a zombie scenario is that it’s not just a local thing. The only popular franchise I can think of where that isn’t the case is RotLD. Almost everything else has undertones of broad societal collapse. In that way, zombie movies are just a different sort of disaster movie. One of the things that always sticks with me is how almost all of us take the word “apocalypse” to mean some Biblical-level cataclysm, and sure that’s part of it, but what the word actually means is “revelation,” and that’s what you see happening in zombie settings - people revealing who they really are when the shit hits the fan.

>I know the gore typically lumps it into the horror category
That's not the reason why no, your mistake is not realizing horror movies are suspense movies first, hence the massive overlap with the thriller genre. Suspense can be scary just like it can be exhilarating depending on the person you ask and the presentation of the suspense. If horror is about fear as everyone says then that is obviously way more encompassing than supernatural monsters and ghosts which don't actually exist in real life. It'd be like only regarding exaggerated Looney Tunes tier slapstick humor as being comedy.

I could only play the game with the big ass black dude. Every other character I tried to use I got killed every time I had a run in with a horde.

In Tombs of the Blind Dead, the main focus is the latent lesbianism in the female characters, never the zombies because I'm an idiot who moderates reddit.

You said the movie wasn't mainly about human nature and conflict between other humans arising as a result of external forces which is plainly wrong to anyone who has actually seen the movie. Cope and seethe.

I get what you’re saying. Slashers have a certain angle of attack, a certain style, etc., but can you think of any horror that isn’t a slasher that doesn’t have fantasy components? I know this is just my own distinction, but what we think of as horror films predate slashers by 50 years.

IMO the scariest zombies are the ones that a constant encroaching threat. You can stay still for a little while, barricade yourself indoors, make a compound, whatever - but they're always out there, always waiting, pounding their fists against the walls to try and get to you. Even if you kill hundreds, or even thousands, there's always going to be more. All it takes is one misstep and you're going to be eaten alive screaming by the shambling remains of your loved ones, and unlike you, they don't need to keep themselves alive. Even if you lock the door, maybe one night about 50 of them get into the wrong positioning and their sheer weight buckles it. They don't sleep, they don't stop, and they're always coming for you. Turn the light on at night? They see it, they're coming. Make too much noise? Now there's 1000 bodies slowly drifting towards you, and before you know it, they're clogging up every street and alleyway around your house.

It's why I honestly prefer the slow "wall of flesh" zombies to fast zombies. Fast zombies are scary as fuck in 28 Days Later, but it makes them too human for me. The scene of them running over the hill at the start of 28 Weeks is pretty spooky but apart from that, I think they just seem too much like psychos rather than zombies.

-t. has never listened to a Romero commentary and how he mocked the likes of those who took it too far to sound deep.

The human drama is a side quest essentially. Non-infected being assholes to each other is a bonus, not the main feature. Romero even said that the racial thing in the original 1968 classic was made up by the likes of you, then when he got really old and senile he openly bemoaned how he didn't let Duane Jones hijack the entire thing for the Negro race. Same with the tension between the others. It was to keep the film from being boring, it isn't the main freaking focus you heckin reddit mod.

I beat the game with all the characters.
Sam B is easiest to start with.
They're all OP in their own ways, I think the asian girl was the most OP.
You can instakill any non-boss zombie easily with a flying kick then stomping on their head. It was almost too cheap.
The white guy with the throwing knives is also cheap, you can spec him any way you want.
I think hardest is the black girl since firearms don't get good until you leave the main area but she's the one that ends up the easiest. Once you get firearms you can just mow down endless hordes and kill bosses easily.

Zombie movies are never frightening, because even the earliest iterations of the genre couldn't resist to include some element of screwball comedy, thus damning it to inevitable Flanderization and Reddit tier faggotry.
There were attempts to elevate it by turning it into extremely hamfisted social commentary and moralization, which aged horrendously, because the people who are attracted to that sort of narrative are without fail selfish ugly fedora twirling Reddit mods.

A truly scary Zombie movie would have to be something akin to the original Exorcist. Very flat, matter-of-fact, and every inch of zany goofball shit mercilessly purged. No over-the-top actors and personalities. And no horrendous skin-melting Jewish dialogue and writing. People mistakenly call this "Millenial" writing, but it's just talentless kikes who failed to be Adam Sandler, an aspiration pathetic and sad to begin with.

Edgar Allan Poe has mastered all aspects of horror, and Alien has united all of those aspects in the best horror movie possible to make. You can put a zombie skin on that if you want, but the main iterations of the "fear of the unknown" rapidly turning into the "fear of the better understood and very dangerous known" is basically the only route horror can have.

You can also make a quick shitpost AI movie about some modern Hollywood types going on a Trustafarian tour to "help" in Africa, and an isolated village that turn out to be cannibal zombies, tear them apart, because they're too scared to run away because it would seem culturally insensitive and racist.

Yes, Psycho and Peeping Tom for proto-slashers, Jaws, The Birds, Piranha, Grizzly for nature horror and then movies like Misery, Repulsion, Saw, The Tenant, Silence of the Lambs, Hour of the Wolf, Black Swan, Get Out, Audition, American Psycho, The Wicker Man, Midsommar, Diabolique and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the earliest and most widely recognized example of a full feature length horror film in cinematic history that predates Nosferatu and Universal's monster movies.

I'd count Blair Witch Project, Rosemary's Baby, Don't Look Now, Cure and Jacob's Ladder too where the supernatural is at least ambiguous (at least until the ending of the last one).

In other words, psychological horror, which in literature dates back to Poe and some of his most famous stories like The Tell-tale Heart, even The Black Cat and The Fall of the House of Usher where the supernatural is intentionally left ambiguous like Jack's visions in The Shining, but there are other examples of purely psychological horror stories from other 19th century authors like The Yellow Wallpaper or The Signal Man or The Woman in White, and loads of others if counting any story where it's questionable if the supernatural is actually real or not due to unreliable narrators and such.

Though most Hitchcock movies are labelled suspense thrillers even by himself where he considered Psycho and The Birds (unsure about Frenzy) his only full blown horror movies he was an early proponent of distinguishing between visual horror and internal horror before psychological horror became a codified genre. In his own words he believed in putting the horror in the mind of the audience not necessarily showing it on the screen and much of his filmography revolved around this philosophy so he clearly didn't think horror had to be supernatural despite being from the era where it was the most widespread belief/definition of the genre.

Oh forgot to say the asian chick can basically spam flying kicks and knock down multiple zombies at a time with it, and then instakill each one with a stomp, and she can do this pretty early in the game, she's better than even Sam B at dispatching hordes. The white guy and the black girl have it a bit harder but the white guy can easily save his fury move for groups.

Just to be boring, here's the right answer:

Whether a zombie is scary is NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ZOMBIE ITSELF.

A zombie is scary if we care about the character being chased / stalked / attacked / menaced. It isn't scary if we don’t. If we want to see the main characters die and we are basically rooting for the zombies, then the best you can do is make us jump (with a jumpscare) or go EWWWW (with something gross).

If you want to make your zombies truly scary, MAKE THE MAIN CHARACTER SOMEONE WE CARE ABOUT. i.e. Be a good filmmaker.

I see what you mean. Natural horror and psychological horror. The Yellow Wallpaper is a creepy-ass story. Thanks to you, I thought of an example of my own - Session 9.

Yeaaaaaah buddy

Op is some hollywood writer stealingideas from /tv/
>>
>>223905543
Yeah Session 9 is another good example that is unambiguously non-supernatural/scientific. I actually just noticed that Get Out is technically also science fiction as is The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde even though they're both primarily psychological horror stories still.

The Horla is another great psychological horror short story from the late 1800s that's as close to unambiguously non-supernatural as you can possibly come while still being somewhat ambiguous, much in the same way we can't tell for 100% certainty if Francis Dolarhyde is really possessed by The Great Red Dragon or some other unnamed supernatural entity in Thomas Harris' Red Dragon or if he's just a schizophrenic since the parts of the story with the voices inside his head commanding him to do unspeakable acts of evil are told through his perspective in the novel.

For me its truly immortal undead or supernatural undead, the tar zombie from The Return of the Living Dead that to me is deeply unsettling. Normal zombies have that constant presence but when you apply "reality" or explain things I just don't feel as scared, it always comes to the usual winter, heat, cure, starve out and boomstick the outbreak/conflict is human made or human incompetance which is scary but the monster is irrelvent it can be a surge of rabid tigers broke free its unsettling but the greater desire is to isolate.
Sure Return of the Living dead starts with a bunch of human error but I am way more scared of the zombies then any person you also cant even blow your shit smoove off to just be done with it because you'll just become undead and be very aware of constant pain and hunger.
