So it is clear that everything that happened after Douglas Quaid left Rekall was a simulation because there are many clues that confirm it and even Verhoeven has said so.But I have always heard that the white light at the end means that Quaid was given a lobotomy because they couldn't wake him up so he basically died. Why can't it be that the simulation ended correctly and they just turn it off? Is it because the guy that tells him that he is in a simulation and that something went wrong and they can't wake him up? But that could be part of the simulation to make him think for a moment that the crazy things that are happening to him must be a simulation but then realize it is a trick and is in fact real (but is not real).
the entire movie is a dreamjust enjoy the movie and stop overthinking it.
>>223906277Why do you say that?
The movie is ambiguous and doesn't settle one way or another. Verhoeven and Schwarzenegger have opposite interpretations of the movie. Therefore, "it's just a dream" is as plausible as "it's all real", and, as a consequence, defending either position is retarded. As are you.
>>223906316The case for it being real requires explaining why Rekall has pictures of Melina, and the secret Martian reactor that Cohagen has done everything in his power to cover up the existence of.
>>223906277Ok so apparently Quaid had nightmares about Mars and a pyramid before even going to Rekall. Is that what you are talking about?
>>223906267That was Verhoeven goal, to make an ending without a definite answer. But the writer and Schwarzenegger would gave a clear cut answer since both of them wanted a sequel
>>223906345> why Rekall has pictures of MelinaOption 1 - She got her picture taken as a member of the resistance. Option 2 - She just happens to look like Melina.Option 3 - Simple happenstanceOption 4 - A continuity error> the secret Martian reactorIt was built millenia ago by the martians
>>223906508>It was built millenia ago by the martiansYeah that is correct but it was secret, wasn't it?
>>223906518It was discovered a few years ago during a mining operation.I don't understand how this defends the simulation theory.
So there are 3 theories:1) It was all real.2) It's real until Quaid goes to Rekall and since then it's a simulation.3) It's all a dream.Talking about the dream theory, when does the dream start then? What part is real?
Is there a definitive edit of this movie?
>>223906604It's all a "dream" a fantastical experience of watching a movie. Very meta. The very first scene is a pre-rekall dream featuring Melina, which is impossible. They didn't get her out of his subconscious, they already had her in the ego program. Two contradictory versions of reality. The joke is you're forced to choose one, you're uncomfortable with either choice, but ultimately the reality that sticks is the one right in front of your eyes.
>>223906267Including a "verhoeven said" undermines any argument you are trying to make. Same goes for "ridley said"
The whole movie is not a dream, no.
>>223906723>The very first scene is a pre-rekall dream featuring Melina, which is impossible.Maybe when Quaid went to Rekall they scanned his mind and made Melina using those dreams he had before.
>>223906406>Ok so apparently Quaid had nightmares about Mars and a pyramid before even going to Rekall. Is that what you are talking about? The pyramid and the alien tech are all real. They talk about this when Quaid visits Rekall and they discuss his dreamscape >"Don't you watch the news? We're doing alien artifacts now"
the whole plot about the machine making air in the core of mars or whatever the fuck is so stupid and nonsensical that obviously it's not real within the context of the movie
The doctor even lampshades the absurdity of Quaid's adventure. Sure, you could argue that he's trying to gaslight him but it's ironic that Quaid ends up on the exact same James Bond-esque adventure that he paid for at Recall.

It's amazing to see the concept of the future in 80s/90s movies. Where tf did we go wrong?
>>223906267I don't like the lobotomy theory. It's more interesting to think that either it's all real or the secret agent ego trip is just that good.
i think the movie is far more enjoyable if you assume that its real. its a lot more immersive to me if i think the events are actually happening. i mean it makes sense, if we know they have the technology to insert memories in people, its not a stretch to think they also did it to hauser, giving him a false life as a normal marrier man and worker. i also think it fits thematically with the movie too. hauser is sort of waking up to what is actually real, he has "total recall", he realizes his life was a false memory and when he goes to mars he sees things for what they really are.
>>223908054the fact that he wants to do recall so badly might be his unconscious telling him is real plus he's way too muscular and fit to be some random poor guy
>>223907341>"With no one to guide you out, you'll be stuck in permanent psychosis. The walls of reality will come crashing down!">The walls of the room he's in literally come crashing down and soldiers start pouring in
>>223906467And that sequel eventually got made and was called Minority Report
>>223907058Maybe any number of things happened off screen to make it all make sense. Some even claim it was all "created" by an "intelligent designer" but I'm a pragmatist. The individual has no choice but to make his own judgment, which Total Recall mocks. It's Verhoeven's "cold christianity" like RoboCop walking on water. Blood and steel christianity. He's not asking nicely, he's showing you the truth whether you asked for it or not. Namely, man is not capable of passing judgment on his own. It's not given to you to understand the bedrock of the universe.

>>223906267The entire concept of it being real rests on how to interpret a single scene. And it's mutually exclusive, either it is a dream or it isn't. There's no way to tell.
>>223908321It's not mutually exclusive actually. V made the movie so they would both be valid, he can do that because he's a director in control of a creative project. If you think real life is different and there's one true interpretation, that's fine, but I put forth that you can't find the true interpretation. Practically speaking, it doesn't exist as described. Also the movie doesn't rest on one scene. He dreams of Melina before Rekall.
>>223906316>The movie is ambiguous and doesn't settle one way or another. Verhoeven and Schwarzenegger have opposite interpretations of the movie.THIS. I believe both were caught up in the wanking discussions of Blade Runner and Deckard being a Replicant or not and decided to make their movie something they thoought fans would discuss and theorize about for years as well. They put in contradictory shit to support both sides and negate both sides so there is NO definitive answer. This kind of thinking led to Last Action Hero and Arnold crying to his friends that his "brand" was over. If its all a "dream", none of it matters and Arnold has plot armor that's simply not interesting to watch. They went too far huffing their own farts.

>>223906345>the secret Martian reactor that Cohagen has done everything in his power to cover up the existence ofThey only fairly recently discovered it. They're not exactly certain what it does and are researching it. He even thinks it could kill everyone if activated. It could be such a violent process that everyone needs to evacuate the surface first. Above all, he wants to retain power. Mars is his at the moment and he ruled like a dictator. If they get out of line, he shuts off their air. If he activates the machine, he loses his primary source of control and they'll quickly overthrow him.
>>223907341It's not ironic. His subconscious knows that he is missing something and his old memories are leaking. Its giving him little hints to his previous life. He is getting tidbits like that he is an undercover spy, he was once on Mars, he had a latina girlfriend there. That was Hauser's life. He went undercover to infiltrate the resistance and seduce Melina on Mars. Those small leaks are what's drawing him to Recall and that specific program because it resonates with him and his dreams.
>>223908400You can be Buddhist about it but Quaid can't. Declining to make a choice is not an option in life. You have to make an act of faith one way or another: will you live as an incomplete man or let yourself fall into oblivion? Quaid lives in a world where there is no deeper truth waiting to be found. There are other realities and dreams, but nothing more true that what he can see and feel. Therefore, his story is true. In the non-movie world we like to find deeper truths and meanings, it's almost an addiction. The movie encourages you to live and remember the feeling of your own blood, the taste of blood
>>223908106i like to think that minority report and the total recall remake are connected since colin farrell is in both of them, of course since he dies in minority report that makes it the sequel after all

In the original PKD short story, it's about a regular joe who goes to Rekall to have a vacation memory implemented but he finds out he is actually a secret agent who had been to Mars. And the movie seems to go that way at the beginning but I guess several rewrites plus Verhoeven's meddling changed all that.
>>223910472Love the effects in this movie
Good book about the making of the movie. The original trailer was so bad that Arnold personally arranged for a better one to be filmed because he thought the movie would flop

I like the that fact that it's ambiguous. It's the "discussion" which makes movies like these great.
The people at Rekall scanned Quaid's mind before starting the simulation and found the dreams so they made Melina and all the rest from those dreams. Do you agree with that explanation?
Can you imagine if a company was actually putting ultra realistic memories into people though? Like if Quaid goes through that whole thing then wakes up in Rekall and "oh hey, you're back, how was your trip? Told you it would feel real huh? Haha!" He'd never be able to trust reality again. He remembers his wife and best friend trying to kill him, then killing them both, but now they're still right there. He can never trust them again. Well, maybe if you took a dozen Rekall trips you'd get used to it after a while since there'd be so many different conflicting memories.
Why are you marking a 30 year old movie as spoilers?

So the only way to know if they are real or not is where are they posted. And even then what if someone in the government posts fake AI videos from official platforms to manipulate people... It is going to be an interesting future.Everything we have seen in movies is becoming real: humanoid robots, AI, fake AI videos, robotaxis, drones... And we would have flying cars if they would be posible to use but I think it's not possible to have thousands of flying cars flying around skyscrapers in New York for example.

Musk is already developing a brain chip that now is to cure some illnesses but that is the start, then it will be to control your smartphone with your mind and then after that you will have cyborgs walking on the streets paying with their body chips, searching information on screens with their minds, etc. I think almost everything we see in the movies will be a reality. And wait until modifying the DNA of humans to create better and stronger humans is allowed, then you will have replicants walking on this planet. The movies are just an introduction to what is going to happen in the future. They are called Science Fiction for a reason, because they are based on science that is still fiction but that is the direction towards it's moving.

>>223915788Yes, pure /tv/core. That, Blackhat and True Detective S2 form the trio of a true connoisseur who went beyond the principle of social prejudice and contingency.
Cohaagen's plan was: 1) Erase Hauser's mind, give him false memories to turn him into Quaid and send him to Earth.2) Then Quaid will have nightmares about Mars because his real memories are still there and that will make him go to Mars.3) Hauser was already pretending to have joined the resistance before being turned into Quaid and sent to Earth, so the resistance knew his appearance so they will accept him again.4) Quaid will get to Kuato and as his mind is changed Kuato won't be able to read his mind and realize it's all a Cohaagen's infiltration plan.5) Cohaagen finds where is Kuato thanks to that and he kills him.6) Hauser gets his real identity back. But this plan didn't work because Quaid went to Rekall and the memories or simulation they implanted on him reacted with his old identity, he freaked out and all went wrong from that moment. Cohaagen tried to capture him to readjust the plan but Quaid freaked out even more when he saw his own wife and friends trying to kill him. Plus Ritcher hated Hauser and he wanted to kill him. That made Quaid to kill various agents and escape to Mars making him more out of control. Finally Quaid develops his own new identity when he is on Mars and decides to join the resistance and kill Cohageen. So the movie it's really about mind control not virtual reality. Mind control and subjects getting out of control like Hauser.
I like Total Recall but to it's detriment it's not ambiguous at all, despite what people try to tell themselves. There are too many coincidences in the film for it to anything other than an implanted memory (one example: Melina being a selectable character at Recall). And if it was "real" then the entire film falls apart.

The people at Rekall literally say they never implanted anything into Quaid. They accidentally triggered his real identity which freaked out. They say this in a scene without Quaid. The henchmen also discuss with Cohaagen their desire to kill Quaid/Hauser in a scene without Quaid present. They say they should have killed him on Mars. This 100% confirms that it is real and not a dream. I'm sorry that upsets you, but eventually you must face the facts and stop denying reality.

Why is the white light at the end associated with a lobotomy?
>>223916970It's supposed to be like losing consciousness or regaining it. The right comparison is waking from a dream, not lobotomy. It also has nothing to do with Quaid unless Quaid is actually (You). The person behind the screen is dreaming he is Quaid. The only reason people say lobotomy is because the scientist described it that way.
>>223917015>because the scientist described it that way.Did he say a bright light will be seen if he gets lobotomized?
>>223917043No he said x y and z will happen but you'll be lobotomized in the long term, implying the adventure won't continue forever and lobotomy comes at the end.

>>223916263 apparently the missing step is: have Hauser join the resistance and befriend them, then get "captured" by Cohaagen. He disappears from the resistance, is brainwashed to forget his old life as a resistance member, and is moved to Earth. That is key so that when he comes back to them and eventually encounters Kuato, there will be a reason when the psychic sees Quaid's mind has been tampered with. In a fictional story you quickly arrive at "this happened because the writer wrote it" and there is no deeper truth. There can be simulacra of a deeper truth such as deleted scenes and official interpretations, but the movie qua movie exists as a stand-alone reality that outside events do not alter. Ok, so Quaid gets to Mars, he visits the Last Resort, he talks with Melina, and she turns him down. Quaid then goes back to the Hilton hotel. This is when Doctor Edgemar shows up. Looking at it from both views:1) If it's a dream, the Doctor is telling the truth and trying to awaken Quaid. He is having a free form delusion that has gone completely off script compared to what their intended implant was supposed to be. If Quaid takes the help now, they might be able to save him. If he does not, then he goes into permanent psychosis and they can't bring him out.2) If this is part of the bad guys plan, my question is why? Quaid already made it to Mars and is reuniting with the rebels. Cohaagen doesn't actually want to kill him. The secret that he is still alive is spoiled. Capturing him again and wiping his memory again kinda ruins the plan of infiltrating the rebels. That part seems kinda pointless for the bad guys to do for real.

>>223908373it's supposed to be viewed as all real, with just a little doubt which is supposed to mirror that of the main character.you blind retards should all be killed.it's so fucking obvious a child should be able to understand it, you fuckwits are either incredibly stupid or mentally ill, either way you should be allowed on the internet or have any way to express your incredibly dull and senseless opinions
>>223918644Lori, Richter and Cohaagen all have a motive to get Quaid back under control, they couldn't predict he would lead them to kuato but offering an all-or-nothing proposition helped it along.
>>223908627good post by someone with a brain
>>223918790It's real but not because what happens on screen is unambiguous. Merely because the screen is "the holy moment" with no hidden meaning. Two dueling interpretations of reality are part of the script, but the winner is plain to see.
>>223907362w-what if it was loaded...
>>223916789Threads like this show how iconic this movie is. It works both as a popcorn flick about shooting and killing, and also as a meditation about perception of reality and unreliable narrator cinema. It's also a great example about how a great director who understands Schwarzenegger on what he can and cannot do, can make him shine as an actor.
the ambiguity is what makes it a great story.same goes for bladerunner.that's why we're still talking about it today.PKD was a genius.
>>223918808Cohaagen's whole plan was to do exactly what happened, just not so soon. Cohaagen definitely wanted to stop Quiad from getting off Earth and put him back in place, but once he was on Mars and had already reconnected with the resistance it seems counter-productive. The whole bad guy infiltration plan was to do exactly as they did: pretend to turn on cohaagen, get "caught" and disappear, have memories wipe, then show back up on Mars and go back into the resistance. If Cohaagen caught him a second time, it would spoil their plan by showing the resistance something is way to weird between him and Cohaagen to let Quiad in on their secrets. The only thing that could be a possibility is if they planned to capture Quiad and use him as bait to draw out the rebels, but not in a way that got their goons killed
Never even crossed my mind it wasn't real. Feels good to be a brainlet and just enjoying the movie
>>223906267When I was a little kid, like 3 years old (1992-93). I remember my dad watching this on vhs, and I seen the part where the lady had 3 tits and it literally made my brain crash like it had a virus. My whole mind shut down at that point.
>>223919181This is one of the strangest movies known to man
>>223919093There's nothing ambiguous about Blade Runner though. The entire thingnthat makes it work is a dehumanised human seeing non-humans desperately value every shred of life and this rekindles his own desire for life, but also begins to see their humanity. The whole movie is completely retarded and not worth watching if he were a replicant. It's one of those want to have your cake and eat it too jobs. They want the twist even if it makes zero sense and heavily detracts from the movie. Doesn't matter to people like you, if there's a twist at all then it must be high art! >Yeah, we'll just create a brand new replicant detective to hunt down other replicants even though its illegal to have them on Earth and we already have a bunch of humans doing it. We'll make him really weak and shitty, give him a bad attitude, depression, alcoholism, all the worst traits we can think of. It'll be funny! We also won't tell the other cops they've been working with a replicant for a decade haha. and a model that wasn't even available until a few years ago since he's been hunting lower models for a really long time!
>>223919181Yeah, there's a reason you don't show R rated movies to little kids
>>223919293You’re assuming that replicants are incapable of humanity. It’s a story about a an engineered human machine slave realizing his humanity
The movie doesn't explicitly state not subtextually hint that the events were a dream, thereby I take them as literal. That goes for all dream/fake life/imagined movies on general.
>>223919710There’s an entire scene where a psychologist attempts to convince Quaid that he’s in a simulation before getting shot in the head
>>223919488No. I am going off exactly what the movie stated. The replicants are said to be without empathy and without humanity. They are true psychopaths that have no problem murdering hundreds when they flip out. Deckard and the other blade runners were very confused by the replicant behavior of collecting photos and taling about memories. He'd never seen any such behavior until those models. The previous ones just gave up and accepted death when caught. They didn't fight for every second of life and value it so highly.
>>223919840Batty mourns the death of Priss and the others. Obviously the Voight Kamph test is flawed
>>223919488NTA but he literally said >seeing non-humans desperately value every shred of life and this rekindles his own desire for life, but also begins to see their humanity> It’s a story about a an engineered human machine slave realizing his humanityWe already have that with Roy and literally every other replicant that just wants to live, you don't need to also make the protagonist one as well. That's just a twist for the sake of it. It's much more interesting and clear that it's about a human that feels like a robot vs a robot that feels like a human, not just two robots feeling the exact same thing.
>>223920153>it’s more interestingI disagree. It’s more interesting that deckard realizes he’s hunting his own kind
>>223908627That’s still ironic.
>>223906267It is real. Arnold working as shitty construction worker somehow got top tier blond. In age of space travel such job would be for losers. It also would not make sense for him to have dreams about dating Melina on Mars, if it never happen in past.
>>223918740The David Lynch special.
I used to be in the it's all really happening camp, but the older I get, I much prefer and now believe that it was a major fuck up on Rekall's side and he got lobotimized. Just about every Arnold movie has a happy ending so it's cool that there's a well-made one that doesn't
>>223920298>Doesnt read>Makes moronic statementClassic /tv/, almost had a discussion going there!
>>223915020New Hollywood would never. Also look at the editing and direction; it's fantastic. The moment the gunfight starts everything is very zoomed in; almost like the whole world condences into these trigger pulls. If this was shot today there would be wide lens over the staircase and still not that many extras.
