What went so fucking wrong?
They had a headstart with the Reeve Superman movies, the Burton Batman movies and the first 2 Nolan Batman movies but they became a complete joke
>>

As a normie, they only have 2 cool characters, batman and superman. Losers like the flash and green lantern don't interest me
>>
>>223910221
>What went so fucking wrong?
Zack Snyder. Hiring him was the worst mistake any movie studio ever made (except, perhaps, for that time they filmed The Conqueror near a nuclear test site giving half the crew including John Wayne cancer).
>>
>>223910221
Warner Brothers itself. Anyone saying anything else is a hackfraud midwit

>>223910253
Shut up, larper
>>
>>223910221
DC doesn't have anyone in charge of their movie division that understands how to build a franchise
>>

He's been gone over a decade dude. Change the record already
>>
>>223910271
> Shut up, larper
He’s not wrong. DC has no A list characters outside Batman whose popularity is on a decline. Superman hasn’t been popular in decades. DC shit is made for TV where it’s had the most success outside Batman
>>
>>223910221
Gunn's creative sensibilities and vision for the DC Universe clearly don't meaningfully resonate anywhere except America. Soon it will be up to David Ellison to decide whether that's acceptable and to continue down this path or not.
>>
>>223910253
>implying marvel heroes sans spider man are any cooler
>>
>>223910221
I'm still of the opinion that they saw what Avengers did and tried to rush to the finish line. I'm not a huge fan of Man of Steel but a proper sequel, a sequel that wasn't trying to lay the groundwork of the justice league, a movie that kills Superman after one movie could have course corrected any problems the first one caused. But they clearly wanted and even now clearly want Justice League movies. They want to make Endgame money and aren't willing to wait and develop characters or a world that accommodates that. They make movies and throw characters at the audience hoping something will stick.

MoS, outside of Batman movies, I think is the last one I saw where they aren't adding 5 or six friends/also heroes. Shazam and all his foster siblings that have the same powers, Black Adam and the Justice Society, this Superman movie. To me it reeks of we want a big team movie we want to build a "DC universe" as soon as possible in one movie if possible.

MC had to build their empire off B and C list characters because they did not have the right to their A listers. Now Iron Man is as popular as Batman and Thor and Captain American who was a relic were A listers because they stayed the course building up to Avenger movies. First Thor and Captain American were not even close to huge blockbusters
>>

The first Thor movie and the first 2 Cap movies were my fave of phase one at the time.

Same. Some clown said but those movies sucked and their betrrr ones later on. Rest of the Thor movies sucked. Only Winter Soldier was good but I prefer the first Cap. Civil War sucked and was more of an Avengers movie anyway.

You are forgetting Superman 3-4, Supergirl (1984), Swamp Thing 1-2, Batman 3-4, Steel, Catwoman - all not very good movies.
>>
>>223910961
You just proved my point it’s more popular on TV. Superman had most of his success on TV. Honestly only Superman The Movie was only good Superman movie. The Flash was more successful as a series along Green Arrow. Most people know Wonder Woman because is the Tv series
>>
>>223911013
I like Swamp Thing 1...
>>
the DC universe is just a clusterfuck, and the only popular character is batman, but if you spam batman too much people will get batman fatigue, we also live in a post avengers end game world where is seems super hero movies in general are on the decline

If i were in charge of DC i would have made a the question tv show, Hellblazer tv show, live action teen titans movie (dont fuck it up with woke casting you idiot), and i would have made a superman movie where Manchester Black is the main villain, it would have been a very meta movie, manchester black is the personification of every asshole who says superman is old fashion and boring

>>223911385
And the reason Gunn's DCU has popularity in America isn't because he's proudly pushing Americana but the exact opposite. He's crafted a tailor-made superhero universe for progressives. Literally every single project has an angle like that. It's the most political and in tune with the left's culture war superhero franchise ever.
>>
>>223911100
manchester black would have worked and you could have had him say something like superman is too woke and there needs to be a new type of super hero who doesnt care about peoples feelings, would have really got into the trump era zeitgeist

>>
>>223911533
Why do you keep bringing Gunn up? They both suck! Just need give up on Superman ever being relevant at the BO. Not going to happen

No
>>
>>223911100
It's this. In retrospect Marvel heroes are just more compelling, for comparison their strongest guy is a mentally ill rampaging monster that's as much of a villain as he is a hero, in turn DC's strongest guy is the perfect god that can do anything he wants
>>
>>223911100
The only popular character is Batman because he got the only good(or even decent) movies in the last two decades.
What normalfag cared about Thor or fucking Antman before their movies?
>>
most DC heroes are just lame, it's hard to build a cinematic universe out of them.
>>
>>223910221
All those movies you mentioned are trash so, what head start?
>>
They have 2 of the 3 most popular superheros: Superman and Batman. But apart from those 2 who else do they have?

1) Wonder Woman mmm ok but in a second level from the others.

2) The Flash: I don't think he is very popular and his last movies were very weird and bad looking.

2) Aquaman: I don't think many people care about him either.

3) Shazam: he looks like a Superman copy. He was going to have a movie against Superman and was never made so I guess it isn't very popular either.

4) Green Lantern: not popular either, I think he has never had a successful movie.

Marvel has more popular superheros: Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, X-Men, Deadpool, Fantastic Four, Black Pnather, Doctor Strange...
>>
>>223910221
No Batman in the DCU.

WB allowed Matt Reeves to hold the character/IP hostage.

Gunn can’t make a Batman movie until The Batman 2 comes out (which is 2029).

You can’t make a DCU without Batman.
>>
>>223913427
It's really funny how they're making all these batman villain spinoffs before even touching their other heroes

A theory that has yet to be proven
>>
>>223913564
Batman hasn’t been in a billion’s dollar movie since Nolan and that had do with Ledger’s Joker. How’d Batman being in The Flash help that movie?
>>
>>223913618
How does that correlate to Batman fatigue? They just made a gamble on Keaton nostalgia when it should’ve been Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Thomas Wayne as was planned. Also including Zod instead of the Reverse Flash played by a notable actor was retarded.
>>
They went in too hard on the idea that that this shit is adult. And now they have vocal fanbase of the biggest losers on the planet demanding they continue to make movies no one wants to see.
>>
>>223910221
Just make good movies, simple as. And use your fucking titular characters. Gunn is a liar, hypocrite, and plain idiot. There’s no reality where Tom King as your architect leads to success. Reeves already delivered a Batman but everybody knows he’s refusing to merge because he knew this exact outcome with the DCU would happen and doesn’t want to be associated with slop. Affleck too, which is why he stayed far and wide away. Imagine making a REAL Green Lantern movie instead of Lanterns lmao.
>>
>>223913670
Batman on the decline. Now instead putting his movies out in prime time summer or winter they dumped his shit out in dead ass March and The Batman 2 was suppose to come next year in dead ass October. Same month they just dumped shit like Street Fighter. Shit they’re putting Superman out in the competitive July

>>223914738
People can shit on Fiege which is fair but he runs shit like a boss should. He doesn’t let one director have full control over a character and do whatever the fuck they want. People call it soulless and manufactured but that’s how comics are. Have to have a streamline concept and everyone stays in line and don’t let set backs detour from the bigger picture. With the WB you do one successful movie and they give a director the keys to the kingdom. Did it with Burton, Nolan, Todd Philips, Gunn, Matt Reeves
>>
those movies had good directors even though I'm not a huge Nolan fan

End of the third film when batman takes the bomb away into the sea is the time Superman saves him. Tom Welling would have made it part of the Smallville universe.

DC is way too fragmented IMO. Three whole cinematic universes active within the last four years (Arrowverse, DCEU and DCU). Then there are the standalone DC films that less informed viewers might get confused.

Wonder Woman isn’t equivalent to Black Widow just because they’re women. It’s more like Thor and which likewise deals in mythology.

The problem is trying to bring in the Justice League and the greater DC universe of heroes. Some have done it better than others but it still fails as the creatives and studio execs harm the quality of the production process. It needs time to breath and not be rushed. For Superman I wish it was a universe all to himself.

Batman is a problem though cause he's only popular when he's the focus. Batmans great in Gotham dealing with his rogues but the second you put him on a team with people with actual powers he's either doing nothing or you get so much bat-wank that even normies want to puke
>>
It's just bad writing and overblown budgets. People are incredibly forgiving of media that entertains them.
>>
>>223910221
Burton movies are great but Nolan movies were the beginning of the end. The paradigm shift is too noticeable. I´ll never understand how that hack managed to bamboozle a whole generation into thinking his movies are good. He´s made exactly one good movie and that´s Interstellar, and in all honesty that may only be good because Spielberg was directly involved at some point and he is actually a master of emotional storytelling.

Other than that Nolan´s been a bane (pun intended) of contemporary cinema. He´s made some irreparable damage and Snyder is not particularly better. The world owes Bryan Singer an apology over Superman Returns, that´s for sure.
>>
>>223915399
DC should not be Marvel at all. At the same time it should also not be edgy slop like Gunn is doing. There's a middle ground and no one has come close to it recently except for Smallville, and Superman and Lois series. This trailer from 2006 captures what DC should be.

Not saying that this was the proper route to take, although I did enjoy it, but Snyder’s team seemed committed to telling a different sort of story than the MCU, a sort of story with a more mythic feel which I felt was appropriate to the characters. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy some of the MCU’s earlier movies, but after a while, everything just felt so repetitious and formulaic:

>Character
>MacGuffin
>Villain emerges!
>Conflict!
>set piece
>set piece
>Big finale
>obligatory credit scene teaser(s)

Unlike most of the MCU’s characters, DC’s “Big Three” are broadly familiar to general audience through a literal century’s worth of pop culture osmosis, so you can attack their stories from a different angle, and that’s what they were trying to do. Nobody freaked out when Gandalf died at the end of Fellowship, and that’s what they were trying with Superman. Just like Gandalf the Grey’s “death” was really the birth of Gandalf the White, what BvS was showing us the death of Clark Kent’s 18-month LARP as Superman. The character himself says that he never felt “Superman” was real, but that’s what he was becoming by the end of the movie - a man committed to the role, facing down his own “Balrog” at the cost of his life.

I don’t fault Snyder and his team. I fault dumbass suits counting beans and calling the shots based on stupid projections. We could have had art. Now we just have more slop.

It was a universe built on being anti-Snyder that didn’t even live up to its own advertisement (lived-in sliver age world that embraces heroism and avoids deconstruction). Let alone the Tom King crap and trying to mix movies and TV shows. All but 2 of the 6 DCU products are rated R with Supergirl being edgy and retarded which leaves Superman as the only viable product. In literally half of them the main character fucks the villain. I can go on and on. It was doomed to fail.

Zack Snyder does not know how to write a simple story with tension and twists. for example, the warehouse scene in BvS where batman saves martha makes no sense. it should have been superman who saves her.

they never honored the vision of a single creator like marvel did. every movie they did even the ones with some promise were focus grouped to shit. marvel just took the relationship they had with its creators in the comic book field and kept it when they started making movies, if DC had done the same they would have had a lot more success.
>>
>>223920682
People can bitch and moan about Marvel but they took a pretty big risk with just iron man and proposing that we have a single movie for each character leading to a big team up that could've just completely fallen apart with a really bad Thor or Captain America movie. I can't imagine how hard it would be to pitch to some executives that a talking Raccon and Tree would be the next big movie franchise.

DC really thought they could just do it in less films and kept passing the blame and trying to change everything mid production to copy what Marvel was currently doing.

I don' want to talk about it.
>Man of Steel and BvS kind of work in their own way as an opossite to Marvel. Let MCU be the jokey non serious movies and you guys do your own thing-
Nah we need to get our own Avengers together NOW Get the guy who directed it and have him fuck up a Justice League movie
>Hey Zack Snyder's Justice League had a few missteps but if you can let him focus and not have him have his heroes kill people all the time we can pull this universe together-
nah lets just end it. Get The Rock to take over
>hey Joker was really good for what it was. Can we get a sequel
Actually the director hates to target demographic. Since you didn't realise you weren't supposed to sympathise with Joker lets just make a purposefully bad sequel.
>hey The Batman is really good (compared to everything else) and the Penguin show really has me interested in the direction this version of the world could go. Can we get that sequel yet?
Uhh no James Gunn has a clear vision and The Batman doesn't fit in so lets quietly end it and let James do his thing okay? By the way we're broke and being bought out and it's YOUR FAULT!

Oh.
Okay. At least I still have the old shows.
>>
>>223920880
Not to mention that WB has always been this way.
They fucked with Richard Donner's Superman movies, which is now treated with reverence, because at the time the executives wanted to add more humor and know comics. That's why the third movie had Richard Pryor.
Same with Tim Burton's Batman movies, the executives thought the second movie was too creepy and wanted a more lighthearted take that's help sell more merchandize.

They never trust in their talent. Even know i'm sure there are executives waiting to fuck James Gunn over.
>>
Honestly they listened to people who never had interest in DC in the first place. Why cater to the MCU audience? What's the point? It's like desperately trying to be a cool kid while caring what other people think.
>>
>>223920880
>Man of Steel and BvS kind of work in their own way as an opossite to Marvel. Let MCU be the jokey non serious movies and you guys do your own thing-
This. Should've always been the direction. Instead the higher ups kept trying to play catch up. Now instead of setting up a cinematic universe they're trying to pretend like they've done the work and now they can have a whole world of literally who characters to play around with. But that isn't how it works. Either make solo movies for the new heroes or start from scratch. But nobody cares about Supergirl when the Superman movie has Krypton be a planet of genocidal rapists. It's just really pathetic. And the last good thing they had going for them was Batman. But now there's a possibilty it isn't being done. Reeves says it's because of personal issues but come on. Ever since Gunn signed on as DCaptain he's been trying to get his hands on that franchise. You expect me to believe he didn't just wear Reeves down until he just gave up?
What Gunn needs to do is focus on his strength. Take lesser known cape characters and give them a movie. Leave Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to people who give a fuck.
>>
>>223920955
Yes. This! I've said this every thread and I'm glad it's catching on. Superman 2 is beloved but they swapped out Donner for no reason. Batman Returns was fucking fine. They sold Burton out to sell more toys. The Dark Knight Rises was mid but I'll be damned if nobody wanted to see a spin off with Robin/Batman Beyond. If that was even in the cards.
Another thing they keep doing is hiring someone who's done Marvel movies.
Bryan Singer, Joss Whedon, James Gunn. It's just... wrong. And I don't want DC to be owned by Disney but WB has been fucking up for years. How is it we haven't had a Batman show with Batman in costume since the 60's? That's insane.

The superhero genre is no stranger to flops. They flop at least 50% of the time, superhero movies are a straight gamble. There was a small sliver in time where Marvel hit its stride from 2016 to 2019 with phase 3 and that’s about it. Also the MCU didn’t truly delve into unknowns until Doctor Strange, which was propped up by a ton of notable actors. Once the MCU genuinely started doing unknowns in phase 4 it killed itself. The MCU isn’t a good excuse to serve random shit on a platter especially when you aren’t struggling with character rights.

As for DC it might as well be cursed. When you look at the entire picture all the way back to the 80s I don’t think any of its movie franchises ended gracefully, for one reason or another. More and more creatives are staying far and wide away from DC for good reason. Affleck wasn’t shy about it either. Gunn is basically making the Mandalorian and Grogu but for DC. I don’t know why he’s so obsessed with TV but that’s one of the reasons it’s flopping. One thing is for certain though, DC always succeeds when trends darker, that’s its shtick. Every time it tries to do camp it flops. I don’t think Snyder/Johns were unjustified in planning an Injustice-lite plot when you look at the popularity of Injustice 2 and Batman himself being the herald of DC, especially when they weren’t actually breaching the characters, contrary to what some proclaim. It was more or less a standard Justice League Apokolips story with the new 52 lineup. Granted doing the death of Superman so soon is odd. That’s the kinda thing you do to cap off a Superman movie trilogy.

Sabotage, an internal one. And maybe money.

Superman and Lois is the only compromise between having a more serious Superman and a bit of camp. No one wants to watch it however and that sucks because for a TV show it managed to capture what Superman is about. I like to watch Smallville and cap it off with Superman and Lois. Thats the stuff.

Hit post too fast
We could have had it good. They just needed to lean into being the edgy Superhero. Instead they let Amazon corner that market with The Boys and Invincible and Jupiter's Legacy. Also don't search "Dick Grayson Titans Fuck Batman". Duckduckgo is in such a sorrowful state.

Never give up to the edgy superheroes so our world don't become chudland
>>
>>223923418
It wouldn't have been Chudland because MCU would have been the more lighthearted capeshit

Snyderverse had Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and the Flash. Were they mostly shit awful depictions and castings of those characters? Absolutely, but they didn't waste millions making glup shitto adaptations

> We need to get our own Avengers
The goal was always the Justice League.
>The Rock
He was never in charge, Hamada planed a reboot because the people in charge wanted that and he was fired and they hired Gunn to make it happen
>Joker 2
Again that's a problem of the producers, same shit with Supergirl.
>The Batman
The main problem is these retards with the "this is my elseworld Batman, don't touch it > Reeves / Nolan" Reeves even said that he wanted no metahumans in his "detective" movie, now he is in charge of the Batman ip for Gunn for some reason.
>>
>>223923580
Maybe the goal was always Justice League but it wasn't meant to be a sprint. Much as I like Snyderverse I can't defend killing Superman in a pseudo sequel in his second appearence. That was a decision by Snyder I can't understand.
As for the other points yes the problem is with the higher ups greenlighting dumbfuck choices. No one wants to give DC the TLC marvel has.
>>
MCU had one arm tied behind their back without Spiderman-XMen-F4, they were forced to improvise and they turned into the foundation of the Hollywood box office. WB has control of the entire historic DC franchise and all they do is shit themselves over and over. That's why WB was whored out 3 times in 10 years

>but it wasn't meant to be a sprint
4 years since Man of Steel, the main problem to me was to make the batman movie BvS instead of a solo movie, Arkham was the best thing they could do at the time, after that you could argue about The Suicide Squad, to me it is a movie to do after the first Justice League with Titans, ofc they should have conected with Arrow/Flash in the first JL and not to rush Darkseid, Snyder could have gone with the White Martians as the first movie introducing Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter and to put Darkseid in the postcredits, just like marvel did.

There’s truth to this. The only DC characters anyone who isn’t a comictard knows about are Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, Flash, Green lantern, and Aquaman, and the latter fourth are just known as the other members of the justice league. Batman and Superman are the only two with enough depth to actually carry stories on their own. DC has done a horrendous job of introducing its characters to kids at a young age to get them interested in them. They really should just churn out Batman and Superman content and ignore the rest of the junk they have at this point.
>>
The should try animated movies. I don’t mean like the direct to DVD garbage they produce. I mean steal the spider-verse audience with animated justice league films since that last spider-verse film is taking so long. People can stomach slop capeshit stories if the animation is a unique work of art.
>>
>>223923927
DC needs animated tv shows like the ones from the 90s, they only thing they have now is TTG.
>>
>>223910253
This. Even when I was a kid, once you get beyond Batman and MAYBE Superman, DC was just really lame, and even Batman was kind of gay before his Dark Knight Returns/Killing Joke/Burton ‘89/TAS facelift.

Though, I also felt pretty much the same way about anything in Marvel that wasn’t X-Men or Spider-Man.

It’d because of cartoons. These four had their own animated shows when you were growing up. There was no wonder woman show, there was no flash shows there was no green lantern show. Yeah they appeared in justice league, but as a result you only ever see them as a justice league members and not characters in their own right.

>Why wasn't the children's stories I liked as a child popular with adults later in my life
Marvel shouldn't be so popular either for that matter, but people are so mind blown by special effects. It's like the adult version of studio execs jangling their keys before the audience.
>>
DC fans a very bitter itt
You've had many chances, obviously too many and need to go away for awhile
Leave our board too

That doesn’t guarantee anything. I wouldn’t have watched a Green Lantern show any more than I watched the Fantastic Four or Avengers cartoons. Batman and Superman work because their villains in a lot of ways are just as iconic as they themselves are. Flash has, what, Gorilla Grod and an evil version of himself? Oh boy.

The lowest rated film as in the one that made the least money was Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey
