Tonight's the night I get "A Piece of the Action" on another planet with an Earth-like culture, this time it's the 1920s. Well, maybe calling it "another planet" is disingenuous, since the previous (and only other) example is "Miri" with its contemporary (60s) post-plague apocalypse. I wonder what message/moral is gonna be put forward with these Chicagoan gangsters, if it'll be something about our culture or a scifi message about the Prime Directive?
See you in an hour or so.
>>
>>223915694
The "character desperately needs something and gets into increasingly absurd and risky situations to obtain it" is a classic TV premise. Even DS9 did it with In The Cards.

The Horizon's folly leading to a planetary fiasco that the Federation bears responsibility for is a great way to necessitate that Kirk clean up the mess before the whole planet descends into anarchy, especially because the moment Boss Ox laid out his plan to unify the territories I thought "yeah, a culture as homogeneous as this one oughta be a single governing body". The Syndicate plan at the very end was similarly ingenious, though I don't know how well that Planetary Treasury for Ethical Education is gonna work out when The Book is so deeply ingrained. Bones calls it the bible, and I'm not a religious man myself so I understand the difficulties inherent to undoing widespread indoctrination. And this version of the Federation isn't even as secular as the TNG era yet. One thing to kill Vaal, another to shatter the covenant. But I digress.
Spock slowly getting into character the longer Kirk puts on the charade of being a real prime mover was even funnier than Scotty being left out in the cold by all the vernacular. I wish that little street urchin who dropped the title for the episode didn't get to stick around longer, get his promised cut or at least some pittance more than Kirk shutting the door on him.
I had no clue the ship's phaser banks could be set to stun, but it makes sense since they're called the same thing. I looked back through the last 44 episodes, and surprisingly there was no scenario that it would've come in handy, but this was mainly due to a large amount of subterranean societies/people being indoors, or the Enterprise being incapacitated entirely. Even cases like the anticlimactic final battle from "Friday's Child" or the beginning of "Operation -- Annihilate!" where the option is available, it still seems inadvisable. Let's see if they manage to continue writing around it now that it's on the table.

continued
>>
>>223920332
Wait, belay that continuation. I was mixing up the Genes again: I thought it was Coon who was against the episodes with a more comedic bent which led to him leaving, but that was Roddenberry who was against Coon making all these funny plots because he thought it went against the tone of the first season. I was a bit confused because Coon was part of the Teleplay treatment for this episode (first one to use that credit by the way, all the ones prior had been simple "Written by" ones), and thought "did he insist on being involved to tone down the humor?" but it was probably the opposite (removing the Romulans from "Mission into Chaos", the first draft, which I agree was a good move).
I think I agree with Roddenberry a little teensy bit, because ending the episode on Kirk saying "[if the Iotians reverse engineer ALL our technology from the communicator Bones forgot] they'll come up wanting a piece of OUR action!" is taking the situation way too lightly, and then the episode ends on a freeze frame like it's an 80s/90s sitcom. I know the codas are meant to be comedic, but a "here we go again!" for contamination like this goes pretty far against the episode's message (a message drowning in the Chicago River, but present nonetheless).

It would have been funny, since there was a 3 year gap in universe between ds9 and voy, if O'Brien got sent to Voyager somehow. Perhaps he was teaching at Starfleet Academy, and Barclay accidentally sent him somehow to Voyager. I dont know if it overlaps with year of hell or not but having O'Brien stuck on a ship that needs maintenance with no starfleet support seems in line with how the writers wanted to torture him. The doctor feels bad, and he develops a holographic Keiko that tortures him lovingly. New holobuddy acquired in Paris.

Many such cases, Starfleet's screening process is almost a joke. Captain Maxwell from The Wounded immediately jumps to mind. Somehow talked his crew into warping into Cardassian space and just start killing any cardi ship they came across. Picard was within his rights to destroy the entire ship for the sake of peace.

Plakson was too corny for that role. If you've ever noticed, apart from her near silent Selar role, Plakson can only ham it up. Every other line has to be some sassy witticism. Yeah I guess, but isn’t that sort of off the table once the species becomes warp capable? Vulcans started meddling the second they detected a warp signature near Earth.

As a borg you're still conscious. Just your individuality is melted away in the hivemind. You lose track of who you are.

I guess the Federation would guide the new-warp civ into how to behave in the Federation (if they're already in Fed space). If the civ gets too uppity then I have no idea, just general diplomacy and Federation fuckery I guess.
Not sure if they'd even join the Federation by default by being in their space in the first place either tbhdesu.
>>
>>223927734
>you're the last fucking guy to die before the borg adapts and easily assimilates the culture
the drone wouldn't care, they're not individuals, they're a hive-mind/collective
>>
>>223927865
Yes but your consciousness, which is more or less suspended in inactivity but still present (given they can bring people back and restore their individualism), still perishes needlessly. Just saying, the luck would be fucking awful.
>>
>>223927720
>7 gets unplugged

Does the hive mind permeate subspace? How does one unified collective work with separate "limbs" (drones on ships spread across thousands of light-years)
>>
>>223927846
I’d buy that, I just wonder what would happen if it was a super aggressive race of xenophobes. Would the feds try and contain them, leave them alone, or meddle to try and shape/bully their civ into something more compliant with fed culture like the Vulcans did? I’m inclined to think they’d bully the shit out of them, for their own good of course.
>>
>>223927942
I think that's what those "interplexing beacons" from VOY are for, or whatever the fuck they're called. They're more or less giant subspace relays.
>>
>>223927898
Another way to look at it is that your individual consciousness attains immortality of a sort within the hivemind. I’m not sure if that’s more or less horrific, just sayin’
>>
>>223928051
Sort of. I guess when someone gets taken from the collective they keep the data but lose the voice. So, it's not like the voice is copied and remains in the hive mind, just the information possessed by that individual
>>
>>223928152
In thinking about it they never really make it clear how individual consciousnesses are mapped into or out of the collective. Like is there a neural map of Picard and Seven still floating around in there somewhere? Consciousness, how does it work?

>>223928235
I think you’re right, it’s a reductionist/materialist view of consciousness being solely a product of a physical organic brain, akin to how the transporter doesn’t kill someone so long as there’s only one physical version. But that’s a whole other can of worms.

>>223928280
>it’s a reductionist/materialist view of consciousness being solely a product of a physical organic brain

NTA but there are surely things in this universe which we do not yet have the ability to record or measure. It's impossibly arrogant to believe that we understand the limits of science.

This is more of a general sci-fi gripe than about Star Trek, but there's no rational reason for a starship to ever have a purpose-built self-destruct system. You're turning the ship into a ticking timebomb. Eventually it'll have a glitch like all man-made systems do and the ship will go up and take everyone with it. Or your enemies will try to activate it. Or some space anomaly will trigger it unintentionally. Or a million other things. You still have self-destruct procedures, like intentionally overloading the warp core or computer system, but having it as a standard part of the ship like the sensors or transporters is asking for trouble.
