Why did we lose the ability to make movies like this?

What the fuck are you talking about? Dunc is on par as far as scope goes, and Avatar is even bigger.

New technology for CGI and digital are miles ahead of whatever was used when these old films were released. People don’t understand how much more efficient and cost effective new technology is compared to what was “rendering” on old blocky computers used in the early aughts. Audiences need to learn to appreciate new advancements and stop yearning for a time that never really existed.

DUNC is all spectacle and no soul. Same with Avatar.

Dunc is a great example of AAA DEI.

Lord of the Rings is a one-time thing. It never existed before and can't be done again. It could have only been done around that time and place and quite frankly it's a miracle that it even happened in the first place. It was a massive all-or-nothing risk of a project. It's in the running with Titanic(1997) for the riskiest all-or-nothing gambles in film history. If Fellowship had flopped, the studio would have gone bankrupt instantly.

The Odyssey literally came out this year.

Yes, the simulated fantasy world and magical events of LOTR can be executed far more cheaply now, but that's part of the problem. A lot of the soul in the original LOTR came BECAUSE it was so hard to do. Because it took so much passion and dedication from the creators to even get it on camera, that passion is perceptible in the final product no matter how much you want to quibble about how bad the CGI details look.

For a famous example, the scene where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli think Merry and Pippen are dead. Viggo Mortensen kicks a helmet and cries out in seeming anguish. He'd actually broken his toes and he channeled it into the performance. You can't CGI that kind of soul on the cheap.
>>
>>223915649
It was a huge risk at the time, especially with a relatively obscure director known best for B splattergore movies. Somehow it just worked.
>>
>>223915649
LOTR had like a decade of preproduction, which is incompatible with today's "we'll fix it in post" culture
>>
>soul is when I watched something growing up!
Of the four big blockbuster series of the 00s, LotR is the second worst (Prequels > Potter > LotR > Pirates).
>>
LotR is so stupid. Ever since I became an adult with experience in life, business, and relationships, it has seemed incredibly stupid. Nothing in it is applicable to the real world or inspiring at all.
