That was genuinely the most boring piece of shit movie I have ever seen in my life. I was waiting for it to be over at the one hour mark, the movie is three fucking hours.

2/10

If you liked this movie please tell me one good thing about it because I cannot think of anything.

I'm convinced nobody in any of the threads about this movie has actually seen this movie, because the only discussion I've seen about it has been regarding the things you see in the trailer, and not the crazy tone shift that happens for the remaining 2/3s of the rest of the movie.

Seriously, did we watch the same movie? Like an hour in she goes to jail and then it just turns into a 100% completely different movie. I haven't even seen anybody bring up it's use of AI. Generally speaking I can't stand AI, especially not for creative media like movies- but this was the one single time I can think of where it's use wasn't only justified- it arguably improved the story through it's medium. It was really clever how they used it to make the audience question what if anything they were seeing was actually real. And is anybody going to acknowledge the 4th wall break that happens with Amanda Seyfried's character(?) I put a question mark after that because sometimes it seems like she's just herself, but other times it feels like she's playing a characterized version of herself. And then other times she's playing Elizabeth Holmes, but then other times she's playing herself playing Elizabeth Holmes. By the end it reminded me a lot of Synecdoche, New York where it became unclear where one ended and the next began.

>tl;dr
It's a really great movie, and I'm pretty sure the people here complaining about it haven't seen it
>>

>Unironically watching a 3 hour A24 movie

Seriously, why has this been hyped up so much? Is it just because of that woman's crazy face?

Yeah I don’t really feel like seeing it either, watching 3 hour movies in the theater feels fucking horrible, you’re basically there for 4 hours too and your whole day is gone, if it makes any difference I felt this way about Avatar and other 3 hour movies, I mean it sucks this bitch scammed people but I dunno, think I might pass
>>
why the fuck isn't there a cam out yet
>>
>>223922228
I enjoyed seeing it in an audience with a bunch of people, but honestly for a movie like this a cam would probably be fine. It's mostly just a bunch of super close ups of people's faces while they talk.

the only part where I was kind of happy I saw it on a big screen was when in the second half of the movie there's some kind of trippy special effects that looked pretty cool projected really big, but other than that a camrip seems adequate

so who gets naked in the movie? I saw basedboys say somebody does but they wont say who for some reason

It's not much of a "theater experience" movie so you're not missing much, you can easily wait for the home release and watch it at your leisure. I do think watching it in one go is good, the contrast between before and after prison is good without giving too much away.

Bringing Amanda Seyfried in to portray both Holmes and seemingly also a semi-fictionalized version of herself is very much in the recent Nathan Fielder playbook.

>>
>If you liked this movie please tell me one good thing about it because I cannot think of anything.

No one has answered this because no one actually liked it There isn't anything difficult to understand in the film and nothing really subverts your expectations. There is no twist, at all. I think the average person wants to say it's good to appear smart because they didn't "get it" but in reality the movie is insanely shallow and there is no depth to be found.

You can sum up the entire movie like this: Did you know people who are famous for lying are often psychopaths?
>>
>>223922692
Billy is the only one shown full frontal in the film
>>
Daily reminder that this movie will instigate chud seethe and cope because it portrays a kirkfag as cringe and retarded (as if that’s difficult) and also showcases a type of delusion of grandeur that is very prevalent in America.
>>
>>223924342
>Did you know people who are famous for lying are often psychopaths?
whether they even are is the point of the movie. Getting to know these people is the point of the movie.
>>
>>223921106
I thought the movie was quite good and the runtime didnt feel super long until the very end. The cinematography was top notch throughout with really clever use of colour and lighting. The score setting the film to enact like a drama was also quite nice. There are parts of the film that can drag but i think the film using a first act for the house scenes and then the remainder of the film being around Nathan feeling like there were still questions he wanted closure on and the finale being him coming to the door and the closure being just as confusing as the doubts were really well presented.
I also liked that Nathan wasn’t trying to end the film with a finalized opinion to preach to the audience but kept things vague enough for people to question if Elizabeth was being honest, if at any point, during the entire film.
>>
>>223924408
>this movie will instigate chud seethe and cope because it portrays a kirkfag as cringe and retarded
oh wow, that never even occured to me, but now that you mention it, I bet you're right.

that part of the movie just went past me becasuse I was more distracted by the fact he had her power of attorney and the horrific stuff he was doing making AI porn of her and plastering billboards all over los angeles with that picture of her she hated so much it made her brake down. I guess I just thought "oh, yeah- that tracks. A guy that awful probably would be a charlie kirk stan- that checks out" but I bet the average tv poster might feel called out by the inclusion of that detail
>>
You should have watched Wildwood instead. It's at least mildly entertaining and strongly benefits from being seen in a theater vs at home.

didn't see the movie, but also didn't even bother to read the thread- that last part you don't see very often. it takes an exceptionally profound type of retardation to pull that off

Nailed it
>>
>>223924449
>but kept things vague enough for people to question if Elizabeth was being honest, if at any point, during the entire film.
I keep going back and forth on whether or not her whole response to watching Who's On First was sincere or not. I just can't decide if she was faking it or not. I have autism myself, so I can understand to some extent how a person might misunderstand a joke or a social cue or something, but what she was doing was something I've never seen before. Its been like 2 days, and I really still can't decide what I think she was doing
>>
It’s a highly intriguing film around manipulation. Billy manipulating (or think he’s manipulating) Elizabeth. Elizabeth manipulating Billy and Nathan. Nathan manipulating the audience through editing. Amanda defending her manipulation because it’s just “acting in a tv show”

the film confronts the viewer with the difficult question of who to trust and the biases we face. Do we think Elizabeth Holmes is a victim of Billy’s controlling nature or is she playing into it and trying to garner sympathy? Does Nathan truly see everything or just what Elizabeth wants him to see? Do WE see everything or just what Nathan wants us to see?

it’s a great film because it asks the questions but doesn’t answer it for us (mostly because there isn’t an answer)

>>
Do you guys think she was lying about not knowing who Nathan is?
>>
>>223924728
I saw somebody on a different social media site suggest that the timing of the birth's of her children might have been intentional to try and manipulate the court system. They were implying first one was an attempt to postpone her trial, and her second was an attempt to try and get leniency with sentencing. Which obviously sounds crazy on paper, because your first thought is "well that's ridiculous, who would ever do something like that?" Listen, I'm not saying they did- but if there was ever anybody who was going to do something like that- these are the people
>>
>>223924771
Yes. In one of the re-enactments Amanda/Elizabeth brings up how she thinks Nathan would be a good father - referring to The Rehearsal season 1.
>>
>>223924709
> Do we think Elizabeth Holmes is a victim of Billy’s controlling nature or is she playing into it and trying to garner sympathy?
My problem is that I did not care. None of the people are likable they're all psychos so why should I give a shit about the semantics of how they are retarded psychos

I was going to pay to watch this but then I learned the guy who made the pro-pedo Chris Hanson movie produced this.
>>
>>223924736
...and on the other hand, it's maybe one of the most famous and very straight forward/easily understood comedy routines in history. She sat there with a straight face and repeatedly said she had never heard it before, and then she never said she didn't understand. Sort of. More accurately, she actually said the opposite. She did what looks like, a very very poor job of "lying", saying that she understood, but when asked to explain herself, was unable. Not just unable, but unable in the way a child might fold under scrutiny when asked to explain the plot of a book they were supposed to have read for homework but hadn't.
>>

>>223924465
Yeah Kirk haters are fags. These posts prove it
>>
Interesting film. The tonal shift from before and after Holmes goes to prison is pretty jarring. The first half of the movie feels like a legitimate documentary, and the second half feels like, well, a movie. Even Billy seems like he's an acting in the later stages of the film. The argument at the dinner table with Seyfried over Charlie Kirk in particular does not seem to be an organic conversation. Maybe it was just some clever work and lighting that made it feel like a dramatization more than a natural conversation, I dunno.
>>
>>223924813
Did you go into it blind? Did you not know what it was about?
>>
>>223924824
She's not stupid, right? But she also likes to play stupid, right? So why wouldn't she be doing it there? And I think it might look effortless because it is to her.
When she said she's never lied in her adult life, was that a lie? Or did she really believe that she's never said anything untrue on purpose?
>>
>>223924963
>She's not stupid, right?
You say that like it's easy to tell, but I'm of the opinion this movie could have also been titled "The Woman Who's So Stupid You Won't Believe It"
>>
>>223924963
for any normal human being I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt

but in the case of Holmes, we KNOW she’s a serial liar. We don’t know factually if she’s lying here so we all hav Erin choose individually if we trust her or not. Personally, based on her history, I choose to not trust her
>>
First half was a well shot a serviceable documentary
The second part is pure kino, if you told me Amanda Seyfried was acting the entire time i'd believe you, if she wasn't I'd believe you. The entire thing is a magic trick, the type Nathan brings up in it, you can tell you are being tricked but you cannot identify exactly how and when.
>>
>>223924598
It’s painfully obvious she’s aware of Wher who is on first was about. She’s a pathological liar. She has been caught lying. She states she has never lied. She also refuses to admit she did nothing wrong. She didn’t admit she knew what it meant because then she can’t pretend she doesn’t understand the intentional ambiguity of what she is saying in regard to Theranos. I deal with pathological liars, grifters, narcissists constantly and this shit is incredibly common. Elizabeth is a badass girl boss running a massive company, an autistic retard who doesn’t understand the world around her (nevermind she got accepted to Stanford) , or being manipulated/controlled by Current Man depending on what narrative is currently most convenient. Most people have principles but for people like Elizabeth the ends justifies the means. Do not fall for their grift.

She's very clearly full of shit. Someone who went to a $35k per year private school, studied Chem. Eng. at Stanford and co-op'd at a bio lab in Singapore is not retarded enough to feign ignorance on their business dealings much less completely decline to acknowledge a joke, likely because she didn't want to be caught in the web by Nathan that she clearly understood the concept of misleading statements.

Billy is an absolute whack job. He’s a trust fund Mormon in a relationship with a grifter 7 years older than him trying to make a startup on a subject he has no formal education in with his wagon hitched to one of the most famous con artists of the 21st century. The AI Elizabeth at the table and all the creepy pets just cements how nuts this dude is. The decision not to marry her is intentional though. The millions in restitution she owes could land on him if they comingled their finances. Elizabeth can continue to pretend she’s poor while married to this trust fund kiddo running a fake business in an empty warehouse and wework cubicle
>>
>>223924963
The responses in this thread really highlights what privileged lives some of you lead that you don’t commonly encounter people like this. She’s a predator. Do not believe her lies. She does not once ever admit something that makes her look bad. Imagine sinking a massive company with fraud and offering no insight on how you failed when you literally helmed the company

I know people say this all the time and don't mean it, but I honestly think I'm going to be thinking about this movie for a long time
>>
People who adopt lying and deception as a strategy eventually erode their cognitive circuits. One of the major flaws with deception is that the deceiver themself run a risk of revealing their own lies if they can't keep track. Most liars are lazy, so the effort of keeping track is too much for them.

So, you get a unique cognitive "adaptation" in which the persons brain will ignore or rewrite certain parts of reality, and then delete any connection to the creation.
In other words, they quite literally fabricate ALTERNATE versions of events that happen, and then forget the REAL version of events.

This is what happened to my mom. She got raped as a kid and never wanted to conquer the trauma, I think because she believed if she was always damaged, if gave her license to do whatever she wanted.
Over time when I started teaching myself about basic psychology (it was a sink or swim mentality) she basically got angry whenever I tried to share any of it with her
Took me years to realize she's just using her trauma as an excuse to do what she wants, which means that if she wasn't traumatized, she'd be causing a lot more trouble to public trust.
Right now I'm trying to figure out how to escape, but like any career manipulator, she's really wrapped her life around mine in a way that makes it hard to separate, due to her desire to always keep my close

The worst part is, she very clear has sexual feelings for me, and even worse, she refuses to do anything other than try to "tempt" some kind of chance encounter with me. She won't read a Bible, she won't learn about biology. All she wants to do it seems is live with me in some weird fantasy world where society isn't about to collapse.
Its really sick shit
I used to feel sorry for her, but doesn't the spider want it's prey to just give up and be eaten?
>>
>>223925218
I get the feeling it's just Fielders attempt to help senationalize the investigation of lies.
A certain group of people knows that once you sensationalize something, it get placed up on the shelf culturally.
>>

That's where the fraud conviction comes in. She went around for years saying things that any reasonable person would understand to mean her technology DID work. And it absolutely didn't. What she attempts to argue in the movie is that she was just unclear, and it was all a misunderstanding, and what she *meant* was that although her technology didn't currently do any/all of the things she was suggesting, it COULD ONE DAY. And that's why Nathan sat her down to make her watch Who's On First and then had her try to explain what the joke in it was. Because if she could understand the joke of Who's On First, then she could understand why she was convicted of fraud, because they're essentially the same thing.

So if you believe she didn't understand who's on first is really at the core of whether you believe she was intentionally lying to her investors/the public at large, which is one of the central questions of the film

>>223926880
but that's what makes it such an effective rorschach test- look at the conviction with which you responded. there isn't a doubt in your mind about what you just said, you're not guessing, you "know". You "know" the truth. And you don't, but the fact you believe what you believe, and with such strength of conviction says so many things about you as a person and how you see the world and the people in it. Someone else may come along that will say with the exact same conviction that they know she was being manipulated and taken advantage of. They may even regard you with the same level of pity or disdain, or whatever it is you're describing that you feel for the people that don't see it your way.

That's why it's a good rorschach test.

you're really just further making my point for me with the way you continue to double and triple down. I was watching a Q&A session after an early screening with Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim on youtube and they said they originally didn't think there was anything really there as far as subject matter goes after the first few days of shooting and were considering pulling the plug, but in their discussion sessions at the end of the day none of them, not lance, not nathan, not any of the crew could come to an a consensus on what they agreed actually was happening. And that's when they knew they had a movie.

Nathan (and Lance) are trying to sell a product. By Nathan’s own admission he doesn’t understand biotech and wasn’t sure why Elizabeth picked him (spoilers: the latter is related to the former). By contrast, I am the type of person someone like Elizabeth would pay a consultation fee to and I would quickly tell her the myriad of issues the theranos tech was dealing with. Elizabeth consciously ignored warnings from her close employees that the tech was not viable (to the point she helped chase them out), obtained machines from rival companies to help create the illusion her machine worked, altered financial reports to deceive investors and partners, and did all sorts of shenanigans to keep the FDA/regulators away as long as possible. There is no universe Elizabeth was not aware of what was going on in her company . This might seem much more ambiguous for people who dont understand business, biotech, fda approval, etc. Elizabeth wanted to do this documentary to rehab her image and perhaps make some money. Her claims she never sold a stock is also deceitful because she exercised stock options thst left her 25 million in debt to Theranos, in addition she had common stock so if she tried to sell those her preferred stock owners would get the chance to sell off theirs first wiping her, and her company, out. I deal with people like her on a daily basis. There is really nothing remarkable about her deceit other than the fact the people she duped happened to be rich and powerful (although again, totally ignorant of this field and overly eager to hop on a unicorn stock). The only divide in people watching this are people who can see the bullshit and useful idiots buying their poor attempt at propaganda

Related, the normie tic of always being sure to say Nathan Fielder's full name every time they talk about Nathan Fielder in this movie is irritating. So that you know they're intimately familiar with the famous and esteemed comedian-filmmaker Nathan Fielder (who they definitely had not forgotten about until just now since seeing a few Nathan For You clips 10 years ago).

I almost went into design. A field that specializes in fooling people. I think this film will illuminate this for the average person.

I haven't seen anyone discuss how in the end where he's recounting the prison visit the Elizabeth actress questions his choice of words when he's recollecting, mirroring the earlier scene where he chastised Elizabeth for her choice of words in how the machine can perform any test. There's also the ending text about the NYT writer refusing to give proof about Holmes quote. Ultimately I think one of the themes is about twisting and being unsure of words. It was great but I wanted more of Nathans confrontational awkwardness like the "no you don't" scene.

I keep hearing people talk about how smart Elizabeth is. I really don't think she is pretending to be a retard. I understand that her lying technique is to always say nothing of substance, but even when she is trying to be smart on the phone, she sounds like a retard. Even Billy isnt even that smart. We all just assume these people are extremely calculating and intelligent. Elizabeth went to Stanford and Billy went to MIT. We must remember that both of them are just rich kids that probably got into college only because of their parents. I have never known many woman to be that calculating. She was clearly trying to be evasive enough because any answer implicates her legally. I also think she chooses men that are control freaks and is happy to let them control every aspect of her life. Her old partner, Sunny, was definitely doing the same thing Billy is doing now. I think they realize that Elizabeth is actually very personable despite being very odd looking. She has a way of softening people and making them feel at ease.

so who is this?
>>
>>223935798
Because she spends the whole film using it as an opportunity to keep playing/researching a character that got her a lot of attention. You even see how insulting her portrayal of Elizabeth is when Amanda watches Elizabeth watch The Dropout. Amanda cringes at her own performance. She goes "undercover" and acts fake with Elizabeth's husband and kids with the intention of having them divorce. So when Elizabeth claims that Amanda's portrayal of her damaged her reputation, Amanda gets defensive and starts coping hard. She can't acknowledge that her celebrated pretend version of Elizabeth was malicious. Amanda starts attacking Nathan when he perceives their last meeting as genuine when even Nathan concedes that Billy and Elizabeth did appear to have genuine love for each other. You realize she can't even see Elizabeth as a real person. It shows a dark side of what actors think. Amanda believes she actually portrayed Elizabeth accurately.

I wasnt familiar with her employee who killed himself after being Subpoenaed for a patent lawsuit. I think that made it more interesting since there was more, moral at least, ambiguity. Reading about his story however oh yeah shes full of shit. Her husband might be rat fucking her a bit now that shes in jail and has less power to curb his obvious cokefueled tech bro influences but she 100% is knowing and willing participant in everything upto that point.
Still a good watch, I think its fun how Nathan tries to pic them apart and lets them sit in a awkward silence. Him eventually snapping a few times got a laugh to.

she's already laying the groundwork to play the helpless waif, hitting the cameras with "Billy has his own way of doing things" the second his money grabs are questioned.

the guy probably thinks he's the ultimate alpha protecting his misunderstood genius, going in front of a camera bragging about having total power of attorney, ghostwriting unhinged tweets, and cutting secret profit deals while making vague threats - the exact coercive control defense she'll use in the inevitable sequel.

just look at Elon, how many rockets did he blow before he started shitting up the orbit with Starlinks? no matter how toxic she is right now, there will absolutely be buyers. honest to god, looking at how that industry operates, i'm confused why she even got charged and jailed.
