The characters, jokes, style, everything was genuinely new ans revolutionary and it stayed new for a long, long, long while. But even before they sold out to Paramount and phoned everything in they were becoming less cutting edge. People either watch South Park now to laugh at the same jokes that were made online or ridiculed to death years ago, or they watch it for the characters. The only new viewers are viewers who never watched it because they thought it was stupid and are only watching it now because someone told them it makes fun of the bad orange man.
