>>223922792why is she doing the racism thing
The netflix subtitles have essentially ruined the joke because they insist on using western style name order. It would work if they used Minamida Minami, then the syllables/mora would be the the same forwards and backwards The absolute state of Netflix subtitles, what a disaster, maybe they'll fix it in the later episode subtitles.
>>223922782idk about that minami a cute
>>223922899but what about the normalfags with zero japanese knowledge who watch obscure japanese dramas???
>>223922976I mean this example is pretty in your face blatantly wrong even for normans, the way they have it now clearly does not read the same forwards and backwards (top to bottom / bottom to top in Japanese is what she actually says btw).

The original Korean greeting goes:>우영우 to the 동그라미!>동그라미 to the 우영우!The Japanese remake has:>南田 to the 南!>円 to the 莉々衣!>シュシュッ タッチ シャチ!A fairly literal rendering would be:>Minamida to the Minami!>Madoka to the Ririi!>Shushu! Touch! Shachi!Netflix gives us:>Minami to the Minamida>Ririi to the MadokaThis is particularly amusing because Netflix has reversed both characters' names, mirroring its treatment of Minamida Minami earlier. The Japanese character's full name is 円莉々衣 (Madoka Ririi). Both characters introduce themselves with their family names first, followed by their given names, following Japanese conventions. The English subtitles instead present their given names first. But the really interesting change is the ending:>シュシュッ タッチ シャチ!The Japanese sounds like a deliberately playful series of exclamations: shushu! tacchi! shachi!タッチ is borrowed English, meaning "touch" or "high five" in this context. シャチ means orca, a killer whale. The sequence also features phonetic play:>シュシュッ (shushu) — a swooshing sound accompanying a gesture.>タッチ (tacchi) — touch/high five.>シャチ (shachi) — orca.Notice the repeated sh and ch sounds. It creates a playful rhythm while bringing in a Japanese name for an animal closely associated with the series. And Netflix doesn't translate any of it. The English subtitles jump directly from the names to the next conversation, even though the Japanese captions explicitly include the synchronized exclamation. That means an English-speaking viewer has no way of knowing, from the subtitles alone, that the remake has introduced a new whale-related element into the greeting.
>>223921977>''it's one of those low-moral zainichi koreans''
>裁判員裁判 (saiban-in saiban) refers to Japan's lay judge system.Netflix translates this a 'jury trial', which doesn't make any sense. During the show I literally asked why are there so many judges? This misunderstanding could have been solved if the subtitles had used something like 'lay judge trial'. The subtitles also use all of the standard tropes from American court room dramas when in many of the instances they are not present in the actual dialogue.
>>223921977It's the Japanese remake.
