J. Todd Anderson, an illustrator who was the longtime storyboard artist for the Coen brothers, translating scripts for “Fargo,” “The Big Lebowski” and “No Country for Old Men” into vivid, scene-by-scene sketches that shaped the cinematic contours of the filmmakers’ quirky comic vision, died on Oct. 1 in Orange, Calif. He was 67.
His death, at a hospital, was caused by colon cancer, his sister, Kimberly Patterson, said.

For more than 40 years, Mr. Anderson was the hidden hand in nearly every movie the Coen brothers made. It was a close-knit but unheralded working relationship that aesthetically defined one of the greatest runs in moviemaking history.

“If you like our movies, a lot of it is him — more than people know,” Ethan Coen said in an interview.

Asked who might replace him, Mr. Coen replied, “I have no idea. It’s too dismal to even think about.”

“He was a one of one,” Ethan Coen said. “Anything he’d seen, he could draw for you — like the logo of a defunct 1910s company or a piece of footwear. He was like a visual savant. It was weird. You would refer to something visual, and he’d go, ‘Oh, yeah, I can sketch that up for you.’”

Over the years, their process stayed mostly the same. Mr. Anderson drew quick sketches with a 3B pencil and then “splashed them with India ink,” as he put it, to evoke shadows.

Are storyboards just shit normally? I mean this isn’t Rian level incompetent but I’m thinking Jamie Cameroon level pictures and it never seems to happen.
