>I had a discussion with him beforehand he said "Stephen! Stanley Kubrick here-don't you agree that all stories of ghosts are fundamentally optimistic?"
>I said "What do you mean?"
>He said "Well if there are ghosts that means we survive death and that's fundamentally an optimistic view isn't it?"
>And I said "Well...Mr Kubrick, what about Hell?"
>And there was a long pause on the telephone line and then he said in a very stiff and very different voice "I don't believe in Hell"

kubrick was stunned by the stupidity
>>
>>223923844
He listened and that’s what no one did.

this never happened

King actually has a point with this, though. The existence of life after death isn't inherently positive.
Most afterlives before Abrhamic religions are pretty depressing, and only reserved for the best of the best (Valhalla, Elysium isles, etc); reincarnation is tied to to karmic debt, and therefore you can reincarnate into something bad; and being a ghost is often portrayed as an extremely miserable existence of loss and longing. Even if Kubrick doesn't believe in Hell (because he's one of them people), doesn't mean the afterlife optimistic, and it has rarely ever been described as such throughout human history.
Kubrick got owned by a midwit and he probably never recovered.

>and only reserved for the best of the best (Valhalla, Elysium isles, etc)
Was meant to say: And the best and non-depressing afterlives are reserved for the best of the best*
Outside of the greatest warriors everyone else would go to Hel or Hades. In the Greeks' case, even an aspect of great warriors would remain in Hades even if they were permitted entry into the Elysium Isles.

what an odd choice to bring up considering hel was a much better place

Valhalla is considered the pinnacles of existence for vikings.
the closest depiction of heaven that wasn't Christian was Shangri-la
>>
>>223924271
still better than going back to the void
>>
>>223924469
no the closest depiction of heaven is hel, it's described as an endless grassy and lush field where people would spend their time in leisure waiting for all the gods and their warriors died in the final battle of ragnaräk so they could go back to earth and repopulate it

Only narcissistic hylics fail to grasp this.

What have you read that makes you think this? The only physical description of Hel in literature is in the Prose Edda, and it is described as being incredibly gloomy and melancholic. Even if it isn't hellfire and eternal damnation, it's hardly a place you want to end up. Valhalla on the otherhand is described as a great feasting hall where warriors can hack away at each other all day and never die until finally being ressurrected for Ragnarok.
Please enlighten me if I am wrong, but right now you strike me as a paganlarper who probably prays to Odin, despite Odin being a deity reserved solely for the highest class of Norse/Germanic society.

in saxo grammaticus' poem about hadding it's described as a field that is sunny and warm and full of vegetation
>>
>>223925469
Fair, but doesn't Saxo Grammaticus also have a strong Christian bias and portray the gods as magical tricksters? Perhaps his perception is skewered by this bias and he tries to connect Hel with Heavenly imagery in order to distance it from the pagan-orientated ideals of Valhalla.

How did they never convince this spergy-looking fuck to play the Grinch instead of Jim Carrey? Wouldn't even need silone prosthetics. Just paint this slop-slinging shit eater green and it's a done deal.

I know why he dislikes The Shining, but why Christine?

I like King stories. I don't care that he often can't stick the landing.

To put it bluntly, Valhalla is where every nigger who pulls a gun during a traffic stop ends up, has unlimited sugary liquor to drink, and people can get their limbs cut off or their heads bashed in every night and wake up intact the next morning.

To any sane person, Valhalla is a literal description of Hell. Your mother is not in Valhalla, Sydney Wilson is in Valhalla. Every wiggly-armed car dealership mascot coon who you've ever seen get blasted on Police Activity is. I am not going to Valhalla, I will throw my weapon away and die with empty hands rather than subject myself to that.

I am NOT going to be the one guy up on a stool changing the battery of the smoke detector in the Mead-Hall of Wotan.

>afterlives before Abrhamic religions
Whilst not an afterlife per se, why do people always ignore Platonic or Aristotelean notions of the soul? Best I can figure its due to the adoption of many of the ideas by Christians during the Scholastic period (this is why guys like Lawrence Krauss and BlackScienceMan flat out refuse to discuss metaphysics).

Nigga wtf? Jews themselves go to Sheol, it's just a black abyss.

Remember Kubrick was from a generation that saw boomers the same way we view zoomers now. And that just makes Kubrick even more based.
