Both Russel and Carpenter has confirmed that MacReady is hiding a flamethrower under the blanket so Childs being the thing and Macready being about to blast him is basically the canon ending
Neither one is the thing, they are both human. However they cant trust each other enough to survive, so they will both ultimately parish even though they had a chance to live.
