Scott Gimple was genuinely one of the worst runners of any major show. People make fun of D&D for Thrones because they expected better. Scott Gimple was full "twenty good men" almost right out of the gate. Every character started speaking in philosophy 101 mumbo jumbo like Morgan and the plot was always driven by obtuse contrivances you had to watch Talking Dead to hear them give them try to rationalize but it never made any sense and the actors themselves seemed unsure of what he was asking of them. People were exhausted by the show by the end of season 7 or 8. It asked too much of you, not intellectually, but in a "fuckup brother needs to get bailed out again" kind of way.
