This. Godzilla peaked with the Heisei era. All movies after that have been shitty.
>>
>>223930860
effects peaked in the Heisei but it still a mixed bag overall. Plus GMK, Final Wars, Shin, Minus One were all good

Oh yeah, I guess Millenium did have a couple good ones, but shin and minus one kind of suck, despite the praise they received. Just give us 1h30mins of monsters, nobody comes to a godzilla movie for the human storyline.

Heisei era peaked with Biollante, most Toho Godzilla movies since then are better than Heisei.
>>
>>223931109
Yeah, Biollante is a super underrated Godzilla foe.
>>
>>223930704
Biolante is the star of Godzilla vs Biollante.

Well no, but that doesn’t mean the human storylines aren’t important. The most popular Toho Godzilla movies all have good human stories and characterization. If you want movies with half-assed human stories, then you get stuff like the Monsterverse movies which are really hit or miss and rely on CGI set pieces and shots that make good desktop wallpapers.

You don't speak for me.

I know people livestock hate on KotM but it has some of the best Rodan and Ghidorah moments of all time and Godzilla is godly in the final battle
>>
>>223932622
I'm actually rewatching it right now because I have an autistic drive to marathon my kaiju folder every time a new Godzilla movie is about to come out, and while I like the Titan scene scenes in KotM, I kind of hate that they completely abandoned the tone from 2014. I think they took the complaints of '14 being too dull a little too seriously. I think Kong Skull Island struck just the right balance.

I just want to see a David Attenborough narrated docu-style film following Godzilla in his natural habitat. I can see him swimming in the ocean to hunt whales, fighting whatever kaiju encroaches on his territory or him raising baby godzilla in the wild. No people, just kaiju. That shit could be pure kino if handled correctly.

Maybe it was balanced for casual viewers, but it was super forgettable compared to the original and peter jackson's remake (better than 1976 King Kong, though). It's kind of like jurassic world in the sense that they wanted a spiritual successor to the original, but couldn't achieve anything as groundbreaking or iconic and instead just released a sloppy sequel.

I meant for a Monsterverse movie, not a Kong movie.

2014 wasnt too dull. Its that it constantly cockblocks you whenever anything is about to happen. The minute anything is about to happen with Godzilla they pan away or the scene changes. They thought it would build suspense, but it just annoyed everyone. Alot of people also hated that Bryan Cranston was shown off like he'd be a main character, and then instantly dies. If they could fix that shit it would have been a good movie. Actually show the godzilla fights through the movie, and have Bryan Cranston be the MC.

Another thing that I never really thought about before with King of the Monsters is that Charles Dance gets a shitload of innocent people killed, and gets away scott free for it.

ah, gotcha

>nobody comes to a godzilla movie for the human storyline.
True but you need it. Not to say every character needs their own storyline but you need to know what their background is and their motivation while they explain what's actually going on with the monster. You don't need to dedeicate a lot of time to it either. Like, "this guys friend was killed by godzilla so that's why he's piloting the robot to destroy godzilla and why he'll go against orders and take risks to attack godzilla." You don't need a flashback or a lore dump to flesh it out, godzilla kills a bunch of people and the details don't matter. Godzilla destroyed this guy's village when he was young so he spent his entire life becoming a scientist and studying the monster. Boom, we know the key people working to destroy him and why so back to the monsters.

Gareth Edwards grew up in the UK where Godzilla movies were rarely imported or broadcasted, so he wasn’t actually a fan of Godzilla when he was hired by Legendary. He based Godzilla 2014 on Jaws because that was the sea monster movie he knew.
>>223933097
KOTM is really stupid because it made the mom character into this unsympathetic eco-terrorist psycho villain for no reason, which made Dance’s character pointless. The mom already had a compelling reason to hate Godzilla (her son died in 2014 because of him) which would have served as a motivation to awaken King Ghidorah, but that was never mentioned during her whole villain monologue scene. The plot of that movie was just completely half-baked and baffling.

I wanted that for Jurassic Park with Richard Attenborough narrating.
>>
Shin godzilla is one of the only decent films. The english still knocks it down some though
>>
>>223932909
I personally want a Cloverfield sequel that's a mockumentary detailing the events from a multitude of angles. The blu ray had kind of a cool feature where there was an option for a secondary display of a map of Manhattan that showed where the monster was in relation to the characters at all times.
>>
>>223933312
I did think it was cute that the third-generation American with aspirations of eventually being President can barely speak english. She is a very attractive young woman nonetheless.

I miss soulful gimmicks like that.

When you pry the rights out of Toho's cold dead hands.
