Man, season 5 was so shit. The plot of the first four seasons organically lead up to and crescendoed with this big final showdown between Walt and Gus. After that, all the other major players were gone and out of the way. Walt won, that was it, you could have more or less just ended the show there.

But instead, the show limps onward without a purpose. And meanwhile, Vince is over here getting mad that people aren't viewing Walt as le ebil villain. So in S5 he just completely changes Walt's writing to make him a moustache-twirling psycho, completely different from the Walt of the show leading up to this point. You do kind of touch on a good point which is how characters in BB just do a 180 as soon as the writers decide they want them to be more important. This combines with the biggest writing flaw the show has, which is that every relevant character has to be a super genius. So just on a whim, with no growth or development Hank goes from knuckle-dragging bonehead to incredibly competent and intelligent because his character was more important for the current arc.

Aside from maybe Jesse, they never show anyone really growing. They're just kind of a super genius and they whip out a scheme that dazzles and fools everybody on the first try. Everyone's too perfect. This problem is even worse in BCS because it doubles down on memberberries and jerking off all your old favorite characters.

It's not even just about that. Besides being family, Walt was also out of the drug trade, he was retired, no longer actively committing crimes. And it's not just a matter of "let him go because he's family and he's out of the game". Because Walt is a mastermind. They ensure that criminals remain dominant and secondarily that prices remain high.
