In my experience, talented artists are excited about AI because it is another tool in their tool kit and their goal is to make their art as good as possible.
Meanwhile, untalented artists publicly renounce AI because they want their bad art to be called good just because they have a moral objection to a tool that could be used to make it better.
>hey I know this thing I made is bad, but I didn't use AI, therefore it's good.

The problem is that it's an animated children's move but it is rated 12's. It's supposed to be a movie that parents take their kids to. Like Super Mario Galaxy or Toy Story 5. But they can't because of the rating.

Exactly, I love watching and supporting animators on YT. But everytime I click on a video and a 'NO AI WAS USED IN THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO. ONLY HUMANS' disclaimer pops up in the beginning I turn the video off. It's so smug and corny. It's infuriating.

That's right. It's like they are preemptively making an excuse for something being bad. It's "virtue-signaling marketing" and "pity marketing". Gimmick marketing like this wouldn't be needed if you could stand by the quality of your work.

yeah? well maybe you should have because your video sucks.

Christ, I remember this. Guillermo's autistic "fight" against AI while marketing his Frankenstein movie. It's not surprising, everyone predicted a massive loss.
It's animated so it automatically isn't going to appeal to most western adults, yet it's too violent/heavy for most children. It's a bizarre movie for nobody and it makes sense that nobody is watching it.

It's also so fucking beautiful that it hurts. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Seriously considering watching it again, it wish it had some PLF showings.

>>223941394
Absolutely nobody wants to watch an AI movie. Even the chinese (who are infatuated with AI in general) didn't want to go see the AI movie that was released in cinemas there, it bombed.
I'm open minded about light use of AI to support and speed up human craft, but it has a tendency to creep further once introduced so I understand when someone has a zero tolerance policy.

Why the fuck does modern stop-motion (and animation in general) cost a gorillion dollarinos to produce? Genuinely curious.
You've got video games that are produced on similar budgets that have 2x or even 3x the length of these movies in cinematics/cutscenes, not to mention all of the gameplay elements.
How does $100,000,000 go into this crap?
>>
>>223942298
It took 17 years to make. What amazes me is at one point they were:
>8 years into production
>$45,000,000 down the hole
>and they weren't even half way finished
And, somehow, the studios didn't pull the plug.
or it was just money laundering
>>
>>223941551
>It's also so fucking beautiful that it hurts. I could hardly believe what I was seeing
When they were marketing the film I thought it was odd that they showed so much behind-the-scenes stuff, but then when I saw it I realised it's because you genuinely would not believe it was simply stop-motion otherwise, it looks phenomenal.

Well, considering the company (Laika) was founded by one of the original co-founders of Nike for his son, who serves as CEO, produces, and director for the company and its films, I can't really say I'm upset. It's just the family's money really, and they're giving a lot of niche artists jobs so fuck it I guess. Not to mention the films aren't by any means bad, I loved Kubo and the Two Strings.
Just seems mismanaged and I'd honestly hate to see the whole thing get shut down.

>As of July 2021, Knight has a net worth of $60.8 billion.[47] In 1990, Knight founded the Philip H. Knight Charitable Foundation Trust.[48] As of 2016, according to Portland Business Journal, "Knight is the most generous philanthropist in Oregon history. His lifetime gifts now approach $2 billion."[49] In 2023, Knight was America's second largest donor with $1.2 billion in giving.[50]
>Knight is a registered Republican and a frequent contributor to Republican political candidates in Oregon. In 2010, he donated $400,000 to Chris Dudley, the then Republican nominee for Governor of Oregon.
>Knight occasionally supports Democrats, however; in 1986 he financed Neil Goldschmidt's successful campaign, and in 2014, he donated $250,000 to the re-election campaign of Democrat John Kitzhaber.[120][121]
>He donated $3.5 million to Republican Knute Buehler during the 2018 Oregon gubernatorial election.[122] Regarding this donation, Knight criticized the unfunded Oregon Public Employees Retirement System and the general fiscal state of Oregon, implying Democratic governor Kate Brown was at fault.[120]
>While Knight is generally reluctant to give interviews, he spoke with the New York Times in October 2022 regarding his support for Republican candidates. He argued Oregon's government had drifted too far to the left and described himself as "more conservative than Nike," responding to criticism of him backing an anti-abortion candidate which apparently contrasted with the company's image of supporting progressive social justice causes.[126]

>both threads on tv and co are basically dead

Damn i thought people were generally hyped for laika stuff, guess im out of touch even with the non normalfag crowd.
Anyway the art and animation was absolutely gorgeous, no stop motion movie will ever compete with this one in terms of that, but man the writing was pretty fucking weak. A lot of the dialouge was cringe and cliche, there were multiple plot points that didnt matter or didnt really go anywhere, a lot of the movie was just traveling back and forth between locations to get exposition dumped on, and the story itself was fairly predictable.
This feels like a common trapping with passion projects that are in production for so long. Its like the ideas have been stewing in the directors head for so long he just keeps adding more and more to the plot. The movie felt like a mini series or a trilogy cramed into 2 and a half hours of screen time. Pretty disappointing for something i was so excited for, but atleast i can appreciate it for its art. Some would brush that off as style over substance but in this case id say the style is the substance.
Also im not one to care that much about woke shit but i did roll my eyes everythime they inserted it into the writing, it felt really forced and out of play for a movie about magic and nature to have a drag queen story hour sign on prominent display in the opening.
>>
>>223944849
agree 100%. far too many boring or annoying characters who stole screen time from more interesting ones.
the humor and dialogue were awful (the coyote rolling around for a full minute, reddit marvel dialogue), the music was forgettable, and the writers couldnt help themselves with the woke shit (multiple gay couples, the dad emphasizing HE SHE THEM, drag queen story hour).
the movie is hard carried by the visuals which are incredible. that being said the movie would bomb regardless. the average american prefers reboots and sequels.

i once made the mistake of reading a twilight book, i think it was the second one, and when i say reading, i flicked to a random page and started out of curiosity, i had no interest in the story, i was just curious about the actual pacing and writing structure from an analytical perspective.

Never in my life had i read such amateurish drivel, poorly written, navel gazing slop for teenage girls, that apparently captivated millions of grown women instead.
It was like reading a short story that the ditzy airhead girl that endlessly gossips in your high school class was forced to write by the english teacher. I was stunned, genuinely, i didn't realise how inferior many women were to the male intellect until i read it.

lol this cope always makes me laugh. When you use AI as a tool you don’t just use 1 prompt. When making an AI generated movie you’d use thousands of prompts and thousands of generations and edit them together. Obviously AI isn’t good enough for that yet since it can’t remember characters, props, and settings between generations. But one day you’ll be able to consistently generate settings and characters make a consistent movie one generation at a time.

>>
>>223945861
It may or may not suck. Point is, it’s not good enough to not be obviously AI in video or photorealistic images. And it’s not good enough to string together a series of generations to tell a cohesive/consistent story, but one day it will be. Hopefully in our lifetimes.
>>
>>223944590
>good enough to go see it in the kinoplex
Yes. I was hyped for this and it lived up to it.
As others have said, the writing falls a little bit short, but it's so beautiful and soulful that you won't care. The characters are ridiculously expressive and fluid and alive.
also there's a thrill in watching a movie that doesn't seem to know/care about its target audience or age rating. It kind of swings between kid-friendly adventure and hard pg13 quite unpredictably. There were a few kids in my screening and nobody left so I hope that becomes a more widely tolerated thing in the future.

I'm an animation obsessive, but I've never really been into stop-motion stuff because even the best of the medium just doesn't look very good. There's something genuinely enrapturing about high-quality 2D animation, and even 3D animation has a lot of that magic, but all this faggotting around with dolls just isn't that interesting to actually look at.

I guess how much work they put into it is impressive, but at the end of the day, I really don't give a shit how much work they put into it. I want the movie to look good and capture my imagination. I want to see animation that provides something BETTER and MORE IMAGINATIVE and MORE CREATIVE than reality, not just a detailed collage of it.

The hidden secret of animation that nobody wants to admit is that the movement really doesn't matter. What does matter is having attractive character designs, an appealing visual presence, and strong writing in both plot and dialogue. There are 60s cartoons with $15/episode budgets that understood this and are still beloved pop culture icons to this day. Despite all the effort put into it, will anyone remember Wildwood in January 2027?

I imagine most other animation fans are like me, and are why nobody gives a shit about this thing beyond a few dull internet people.

Its a mixed bag. The movie is obviously gorgeous and is the pinnacle of stop motion animation and will likely be seen as that for years. Buuuut the plot is rushed, the dialouge is often cringe or quipy, plot points are dropped or are pointless, and the structure of the film is the girl gling from place to place getting lore dumped on with an occasional millennial therapy session scene thrown in. It has all the makings of an instant classic, but the script is so weak it fumbles pretty hard and cant tie it all together in a satisfying way.

If it IS a children's movie, what's with all the cruel bloody violence and suicide and grief and infertility?
But if it ISN'T then what's with the magical forest, the talking animals, the slapstick humour, the goofy sidekick?

In an ideal world we wouldn't have an arbitrary binary "children's movie" vs "not children's movie" distinction, and everyone would enjoy movies with a wide variety of mediums and visual styles, and adults would happily watch "childish" things and children would be encouraged to watch "challenging" things, and maybe we wouldn't even have the concept of a target audience at all.

But the world we live in demands this crude distinction and wildwood struggles to fit in either bucket. That's going to severely affect its box office potential but laika seem to be at peace with that.

Laika movies have never made money and that's never mattered cuz it's just nike money funding people's passion projects via a founder's son. I think "wasting" nike money on high effort art is based.

Everyone here is so retarded about this, only the poster looks like AI, the movie looks like hyperealistic stop motion animation. Stop calling this AI or should be AI. Just because AI can do that NOW what was this guy going to do 16 years ago idiots?

If this is the final stop motion movie ever because of AshittyI then it went out with a bang.

I guess what you’re saying is there’s no audience for this confused money laundering flick.

It was real pretty, but undercooked.

The characters were kind of flat.
The music was nonexistent, and the audio mixing was so bad i thought my theaters speakers were busted.

Cool worldbuilding and graphics tho.

Oddly violent, PG-13 was a mistake.
Few minutes after the Cocomelon Movie preview an animated child was committing suicide
