I read the Day Watch series in English and very much enjoyed the film adaptations. Now I can't get enough of that whacky zany Slavic style. Recommend me some. Bonus for English dubs.

Also Anton thread, we all wearing sunglasses tonight.

I'm self bumping because I've never seen this movie discussed before and I need some russo-kino

Viy (it's a little goofy but it's very soulful and it's the first Soviet horror film, very cute waifu too)
How I Ended This Summer
Stalker if you didn't watch it somehow
The Ascent

I also liked The Geographer Drank His Globe Away but maybe it's not for everyone.

The Night Watch 2004 is obscure and underrated gem of urban fantasy. Say whatever you want, it's a solid 9/10 good for what it is, like the old Carpenter's movies. I'm Polish, I hate ruskies, I find the commie blocks and public transport absolutely disgusting, but I still like it. Watch it on the YT, it's always there.
On the other hand, the Day Watch 2007 is a complete disaster in terms of the plot, world building and story telling. Watch only fragments, whatever you will make up in your head will be better than the actual film.

I thoroughly enjoyed their totally not the x-men larping as the soviet super soldiers movie, Guardians, but I have low standards. Also liked
I Am Dragon and the remake of Viy, Forbidden Empire. (the sequel to that is beyond dumb though and only slightly worth it for Arnold fighting Jackie Chan.)

Classics:

Planet Of Storms
Ilya Muromets

Watched the latter recently and the effects are really something for the time.

Hard to be a god is kino of thr highest order

Brother and Brother 2 are both really really good.
Dead Man's Bluff is basically a Guy Ritchie movie set in 90's Russia.
In terms of earlier stuff I don't know much about Soviet cinema but some of their westerns are good. I enjoy White Sun of the Desert a lot and it's even up on youtube.

The books are great. Honestly surprised someone hasn't tried it in Hollywood, yet. Especially after Witcher.

Timur got stupid in US. Wanted is good old him, but remaking Ben Hue? Come now. He is also behind all the experimental entirely on PC screen films. The War of the worlds with Ice Cube is his production.

"Magicans" (1982) - it's something like "Night\DayWatch" by own atmothere. Good movie for a New Year evening.

Thanks for the recs, boys. Looks like there have been a few of you who've seen the films or read the books. Do you think we'll ever get the remaining books into movies one day? If I remember, that series ended in a pretty interesting way with some sitch and Anton trapped in a time pyramid basically forever. Cool shit only Russians could think up. Gonna go look up whatever else you guys threw my way.
