read the original Robert Howard Conan stories recently and holy shit we got robbed. don't get me wrong i like the Arnie movies, but the source material is like pure hardboiled pulp that somehow touches on something deeply existential. Howard was pen pals with Lovecraft, there's heavy, mythic weight of dying empires and cosmic melancholy, and Conan is as a raw spark of vitality in an indifferent universestep one to reviving it: drop every preconceived notion about the S&S genre made past the 1960s.

You really need to be punchy and make every page and encounter feel like it's taking you somewhere and be okay with not explaining everything on the way to the conclusion. It's art.

The market might not exist today, there was a much straighter shot to getting a s&s film done before the modern media environment. They were getting some $$$ from appealing to the 'see boobs' audience, and to the 'esoteric sci-fi/fantasy fiction' audience, but these folks get all they want from the internet now. That gave them enough funding to justify making a whole film. Today the creator would need to appeal to the 'hey remember the 80s lol' attitude to get a whole film made, and it would be tough for them to sneak a whole s&s film past the producers while they want to make a modern audience film with s&s trappings. We could still get some kind of lower budget thing, maybe AI will legit make it possible to get the necessary visuals on a very low budget production.
