>get kid safely to boat
>let go of boat

I get how riptide currents can kill you, but she was on a lake. Just hold onto the boat and call for help

even stranger was that she was considered a strong swimmer and there were zero drugs or alcohol in her body. I'm a strong swimmer myself and if you drop me in the middle of a lake that small with some sort of flotation device, I could easily make it to the shore even if I have to periodically stop and rest.
