how is this movie not more popular?
>>
Niche subject
>>
It was popular

It was a flop at the time but it’s definitely developed a devoted following since. To this day, it still gets referenced when shitty musician biopics come out, like the recent Bruce Springsteen one.
>>
>>223946494
no it wasn't, it's gained a cult following over the years but it was a box office flop.

it's great but most people think Reilly can't lead a good movie
>>
>>223946534
>muh box office numbers
That shit doesn't fucking matter. The fact is that everyone and their mother were quoting and referencing this movie right when it released and for months, even years, after. It was a popular movie regardless of whether it made a gorillion dollars in China or whatever the fuck today's metric is for box office success.

The quality drops off a cliff after the India scene. The last 15 minutes are still decent tho

Speak English doc, we ain't scientists
>>
>>223946241
I like it but once you're over how good the parody aspect is the actual humor is pretty run of the mill for the time
>>
I think people who haven't seen it still know the drug scenes with Tim Meadows
>>
>>223946241
Was this the last truly great spoof movie? We don’t really get them much anymore.
>>
>>223946241
Because it was like the 3rd movie in a string by the same writers of talledega nights (kino), step brothers, (mid kino) blades of glory (shit) and people were tired of it and will ferrell. The only memorable part was the beetles getting in a fight.

Wrong kid died.

John C Reilly is disgusting to look at
>>
Most normies don't get the references
>>
>>223947215
Kind of this honestly. Formulaic Hollywood biopics largely work for the mainstream audience. Walk Hard was targeted more at snobby comedy fans.
>>
>>223947215
>>223947296
what do you mean "get the references"

I haven't seen any of the biopics it's referencing and consistently find it hilarious. I'm sure being a big music/biopic fan would help tremendously, but it's not really that difficult to "get"
>>
>>223947627
It's not references to biopics it's the music references people won't get. Normies can't even name all the Beatles let alone actively know who Buddy Holly was
>>
>>223947702
It always seemed like most people were not familiar enough with Brian Wilson to understand that whole part and how accurate it was to real life
>>
I like Ricky Bobby better
>>
You have to remember Walk the Line really well
>>
>>223946241
I think it makes alot of people uncomfortable by exposing how unoriginal the industry is. Biopics are some of the biggest examples of this though, and once you see it in one genre you start seeing it everywhere. And Hollywood still hates the movie because it takes the piss out of them. I love Walk Hard though, Top 10 comedy for me.
>>
>>223947731
Interest in boomer music lore is unfortunately pretty dead despite plenty of those artists finding success with younger generations
>>
>>223947841
Especially because Walk the Line was considered a big prestigious release with Reese Witherspoon winnng an Oscar for it. Then Walk Hard completely tore it apart and exposed all the formulaic tropes in these kinds of glossy biopics.
>>
>>223947841
>I think it makes alot of people uncomfortable
All the most beloved and most quoted films of all time make people uncomfortable

I think the only real answer is that the vast majority of people are tasteless windowlicking retards.
>>

This is some kind of leftoid or female experience. No bro watches raunchy or racist comedy because it makes them "uncomfortable"
>>
>>223948112
what exactly is comedic about comfortable situations?
are you stupid?

Only other one that comes to mind is this, which was a pretty great spoof of the cringey Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber concert docs from that era.
>>
>>223947973
The wife gets confused and angry when I say "I can't build you a candy house! It will fall apart, the sun will melt the candy, it won't work!" Instead of just saying no.
>>
Because a parody of bad musician biopics is still a bad musician biopic.
>>
>>223948191
You could ask the same thing about uncomfortable situations. Those aren't inherently funny. The point is that describing good comedy as narrowly as you did is retarded

You’re forgetting that at the time, flashy Hollywood biopics like Ray and Walk the Line were getting positive reviews and Oscar nominations.

>The fact is that everyone and their mother were quoting and referencing this movie
I hate to disparage the youth but they genuinely don't know and can only learn things from wikipedia so have no way of hearing what it was actually like. People talk about revisionism but it seems like the revisions are done before the info makes it to their eyes. Like they are reading doctored accounts of things.

It has its moments but its also really long for how often it drags. Like, I get it, musical biopics are like that, but you need to do a lot more than that to keep me engaged

You actually need to have a decent foundation of cultural knowledge. You need to know all the movies being spoofed, or at least have a general idea of the musical biopic genre. And you also need to have some knowledge of music history, especially rock and roll.

If you have both of these things, it’s the funniest movie you’ve ever seen
>>
>>223948654
Well, it’s primarily spoofing Walk the Line which came out a couple years earlier and was a pretty big hit.
>>
>>223948678
This is why I don't understand those YouTube guys going "OMG it ruined music biopics forever" most of the time it's a very straight parody of Walk the Line with just a small handful of references to other shit.
It isn't distilled biopic parody perfection, it's just The Johnny Cash movie but funny
>>
>>223946241
Came out at the wrong time. Walk the line didn’t deserve to be lampooned like that. Rocket man, the queen one, and the recent elvis one definitely did deserve it.
>>
>>223948678
Walk the Line did not make very much at the box office. As a genre they do not put asses in seats. Ray made less than 150m. Even the Elvis movie, which I really liked, made less than 300m. I saw Walk Hard before I saw Walk the Line and I can’t imagine this was uncommon, I was in the market for silly goofy Judd Aparow style shite and accidentally watched genuine musikino.

On that score, there are references you would only get as a music fan. The scene that spoofs Brian Wilson recording Smile (“we need more dirigidoos!”) is completely incomprehensible if you don’t know the history of the Beach Boys. Beatles in India, again makes very little sense if you don’t know the relationships between the Beatles.
>>
>>223948767
It gets jerked off because all biopics afterwards followed the walk the line formula to a T. Walk hard is retroactively a perfect parody
>>
>>223948886
Sure but it's not Walk Hard geniusly predicting the future of music biopics, its future music biopics copying Walk the Line

You're good. Makes me wonder what reputation this movie has among people in Hollywood. Like were any major players involved in Elvis, the queen one, or rocket man even aware of this movie?

I tell ya what. Neither Walk the Line nor any of the films you mentioned had a single choregraphed monkey dance number
>>
>>223946534
It was culturally significant and well known
>>
>>223948913
Anon walk the line wasn’t the first biopic with that formula. You’ve also got great balls of fire, la bamba, selena, the doors, buddy holly story, bound for glory, and even bird all following a similar formula.
