What do we think of the Hellraiser franchise?
>>223954145I've only seen the first two and loved them. I just picked up a DvD boxset containg films 3 through 6 for five dollars and plan on watching it this weekend. I'll probably watch the first two again before starting the others.
>>2239541451, 2 and 4 are awesome. yes i like the 4th and you cant change my mind. it is kino.
>>223954246
>>223954198I just watched the first one. The body horror was kino but I wasn't a fan of the murder story between Frank and Julia. I'm watching the second one tomorrow
>>223954296id argue the 2nd is the best. takes it to a whole different level.
>>223954257have you read the comics? they are full of great scenes and quotes like this. go for the 80s ones and the dark horse modern ones. the marvel ones suck.
>>223954314unpopular opinion: i don't like cenobite chennard
>>223954145As a franchise I think very poorly of it. But I enjoy those first three movies for various reasons.
>>223954331>to think i hesitated...well thats your opinion man.
>>223954330There were Marvel ones?
>>223954330Nta but what about the books?
>>223954351yeah a few. even some retarded Christmas special etc
>>223954348i don't like him because he's a quipper like freddy. ok for NOES but very out of place for Hellraiser. The progression from quipper chennard to quipper pinhead in H3 is obvious.
>>223954366i liked the original and scarlet gospels. didnt read much more i dont think there is a lot more. iirc pinhead has a gues appearance in arabat (those weird childrens books barker wrote)
>>223954145When the game came out I rewatched the entire franchise and I can say without a doubt that the only good Hellraiser movie is the video game. The first two provide good establishing lore, the rest is complete garbage which has some moments here and there but are mostly unrelated stories with some Hellraiser brand shoehorned in.
>>223954377I remember a Christmas special but I don't remember the company that published it. It was an anthology. One involved a professor trying to solve the mystery behind a child's rhyme, another one was a executive at a toy company trying to merchandise the box or something like that.
>>223954296>>223954314I preferred the second one, too. A large portion of it takes place in the Hell dimension and it has a great atmosphere. I haven't seen a setting that cool in any horror movie.
>>223954296Murder story is great though.>Frank fucks Julia>This is fun but I need more.>Ghosts her ass>Magically comes back>Seduces and kills men to help>Lol. Nevermind, I want to fuck my niece while I wear her father's skin like a suit.
>>223954417imogen is sexo
>>223954408>the video game adaptation is better then the movie
>>2239541451 and 2 is like a big long n thick masterpiece. 3 - 5 are watchable, with Inferno the best among those. After Inferno, it's pretty miserable. the 6th, Hellseeker (lame title) was lame. they wasted Kirsty Cotton's "return". its difficult for me to even recall the events. vague cheap crap.
everyone loves this guy
>>223954433Idk, it was a cool concept but the execution only gripped me during the first and last murder
>>223954437I haven't played the game and probably won't. It takes too long and still offers less than a movie. The last video game adaptation I played was Alien Isolation and I thought it was extremely underwhelming.
>>223954145i have never watched them before but I was hoping to watch the first one this spooky season maybe the second if I like the first. What am I in for hellraiser-bros?
>>223954500Some wicked body horror
>>223954500your soul will be torn aparrrrrrrrrrrt
>>223954500>>223954515POETIC body horror.
>>223954417now i know why that was excised. that is a severely retarded scene. and they ruined his head. bizarre
the lore behind it is very interesting. their “explorers in the further regions of experience”, the philosophical ideas about the nature of pleasure and pain. how far the extremity of sensation can go. the rest of it is generic slasher shit.
>>223954450>difficult for me to even recall the events. That would be because the entirety of the movie is hallucinations and dream sequences that don't actually happen. Its like the director phoned it in for an hour and a half.
>>223954685The best part of the movies is this lore, that's why so few of the movies are any good, they're all about some dumb drama of some pleasure junkies or whatever, no one actually cares about the human characters because they're almost always unlikeable people. But all the cenobite stuff, labyrinth stuff, leviathan stuff, all that's really interesting and hard carries the franchise.
>>223954433True. Every skinless scene and the reveal where Frank is wearing his brother's skin are kino.>>223954468>discs inserted into headsAraki stole from this.
I'm on the fourth one now...this sucks.
>>223954198The Hellbound Heart, the book Hellraiser is based on and written by Clive Barker, it’s easy to find for free online and it’s okay. But it makes you realize Clive Barker is a homosexual S & M fetishist that can only get off by receiving extreme torture and the box is the gateway for him to be able to jizz again. That’s why the Cenobytes wear leather and piercings because it was Clive Barker’s sex fantasy.
Only has one good movie because 1 and 2 should be one movie.Everything else is shit and you maybe like another one ironically but that sure wasn't worth to watching the other 8 just to be sure. And I'm sorry if you ever touched the books.
>>223954468>reading the new comic run>Pinhead has Chatterer hunt down and kill the Hellraiser III cenobites (CD, Camerahead and Barbie) to erase his "false apostles"I thought that was pretty neat.
>>223954145First is a classic 2nd is a good sequel Massive falloff after that
>>223955017>dumb drama of some pleasure junkiesin the most recent one (2022) the protagonist is addicted to pills. which is kind of an obvious angle to a hellraiser movie that they would get around to eventually. but compare that to frank who is said to have indulged in every extreme sexual perversion out there, he reached the upper limits and is now looking for a pleasure beyond this world. we actually get to see riley in the 2022 movie have sex twice. and it’s just normal, loving sex with her boyfriend after having a few beers. it’s so tame. that is not a hardcore pleasure seeker, the people who solve the box are supposed to be true degenerates.
>>223955182Hellraiser was based on the people he met when he was in the scene back in the late 70s to 80s more than Barker himself.
>>223954569And to think Scoob, like ZOINKS, I hesitated.
>>223954145One of those movies I was too scared to watch as a kid and just forgot about it when I get old. Tonight I'll watch it
>Hellraiser Great>Hellbound Amazing, best in the franchise.>Hell on Earth Great >Bloodline Good, but the cracks are starting to show. >InfernoDecent, at best. >HellseekerNot good.>DeaderReally fucking bad. >HellwordYikes…>Revelations Skip it. Not worth your time. >Judgement Skit it, also. Not worth your time. >RemakeOk? I guess? I can take it or leave it.
>>223954145Never could get into these. Every time ive tried to watch the 1st one, I got bored. Think im too old to get into them now because Pinhead looks ridiculous and the way the Barker does supernatural shit about hell is laughable and cringe to me now
>>223954145lame genX rubbish
>>223955310I liked the 2022 movie less than the worst slop Hellraisers, it may have had a more coherent story but it was typical white man bad gays and strong women good type storytelling and you don't even see any tits in it.

>>223955948I’d give it a 3 or 4 outta 10. honestly casting a tranny as pinhead was the best thing about it, faithful to the source material. cenobites are described as sexless and ageless, and pinhead is supposed to sound something like a teenage girl. unfortunately I think they meant for this pinhead to indeed be female, but it’s certainly more androgynous than any other iteration. also showing what they did to the rich guy after he solved the box, and showing his transformation into a cenobite at the end. nice choice
I've never seen any of them but someone was telling me I need to see it Saturday night, so thanks to that and this thread I'm currently 10 minutes into:Hellraiser.1987.1080p.UHD.BluRay.FLAC2.0.DoVi.HDR10.x265-WiLF
>>223956360It is more appropriate casting for Pinhead but its hard to replace the original actor for it, particular for the way he delivered his lines.
>>223954145I like it. 1, 2 and 5 are my favorites. The game has also been pretty good so far.>>223954246The 4th one is a mixed bag for me, because the scenes set in the past about the origin of the Lament Configuration are excellent, but the space stuff was lacking. In that regard, Event Horizon is a better "Hellraiser in space". It does mog 6 and whatever came after though. Judgement also had some interesting ideas, but it takes more creative liberties than the rest.
>>223955992Scream, Cabin in the Woods and meta horror in general is the reddit of horror
>>223954145It starts off strong and ends up pretty lacking due to Miramax's greed. Also, I'm still pissed that the Tortured Souls movie was never made.
>>223954390cenobites appear also in weaveworld (for just a paragraph or less)
>>223954330I’ve read so many pirated 80’s-90’s Hellraiser graphic novels. They are absolutely kino AF. Better than the movies.

>>223954145Ive watched the first 5, the remake and the video game.First 2 are kino, 3 starts off alright but gets absurd, 4 is meh. 5 goes nowhere, but the protagonists consequences although not particularly original kinda linger with you, in some ways it showcases a more disturbing fate than the other movies which leave implications immediate or behind the scenes. The remake is decent and I liked the ending. Havent watched the rest yet cause i heard were shit.Game was really good, really nailed the labyrinth parts and sparked my interest in the franchise again despite most of the gameplay being derivative. Overall, I think the concept of Hellraiser is brilliant but Clive and the others never really managed to flesh out the movies into something greater. The cenobites always talk about unimaginable pleasure and pain, yet most of the time we just see them ripping people apart with chains or dragging them to hell. I read the first chapter of Hellbound Heart recently, and it actually describes exactly how Frank is being tormented with overwhelming sensation. Theres also a small bit in the remake where one of them is being tortured with pins through her throat while she's trying to scream.I think the franchise would benefit delving deeper into these realities of the being subjected to the leviathan. I wouldnt mind it borrowing more from movies like the Cell with world building.
>>223956964The 2022 movie isn't really worth paying enough attention to to care about questions like this.
Is it my imagination or is it suddenly impossible to search for online Hellraiser comics/graphic novels?A few weeks ago I found tons of them, now all search engines are returning the same gay results.
I was surprised at how good the first movie was. Given the title and the cover art I was expecting some real gory, exploitative shit. But it was actually a really intelligent film about how infidelity turns us into monsters and the sexual nature of violence. I haven't seen any of the sequels but I heard awful things about them.
At least someone found happiness in slavery, Aldous Huxley eat your heart out.
>>223957115>yet most of the time we just see them ripping people apart with chains or dragging them to hellthat’s because to them pain and pleasure is the same thing. and it would seem the limits of pain go far beyond the limits of straightforward pleasure. they even know that people that solve the box don’t understand that the “pleasure” they’re about to see is actually just extreme pain. but they still think they’re giving them a gift
>>223957115>>223956815>Overall, I think the concept of Hellraiser is brilliant but Clive and the others never really managed to flesh out the movies into something greater.READ THE COMICS if you want something “fleshed out.”I especially liked the returning Templar crusader whose faithful Christian wife decides to restore his lost faith and fight “Satan” which the cenobites find quite humorous, spirited and interesting.Canons Of Pain comic 1989. I tried valiantly to find it but I’m tarded.
Even the sillier Hellraiser comics were gripping and weird. Such as this story, a woman can’t conceive and she’s about to hit the wall so she makes a deal with Leviathan.
>>223958473
>>223955330Lord of Illusions, also written and directed by Barker, has similar imagery in places. The villain and his henchman are gay fetish archetypes. The villain is a leatherboy who likes to torture people and his henchman/boyfriend is a skinhead in a bomber jacket with Nazi badges (a look sometimes adopted by gays in 1980s Britain). That Barker returned to these kinks in works other than Hellraiser suggests that he was expressing his own predilections and not just sharing his observations of other people.
>>223954145as a whole they are pretty mid, but they had some great entries, the lore and designs are very cool too
>>223954145Maybe you have to be able to confuse pain with pleasure but otherwise the premise is quite dumb.
>>223954145I’ve seen the first two and the remake, which I was told were the only films worth watching. The first one was great, the second had cool lore but a weaker story, and the remake was disappointing. I hated all the main characters and only one kill even made me uncomfortable. Cenobites were cool though. I’m surprised Hellraiser even became a long-running franchise. It doesn’t quite have the easily repeatable elements of F13 or Nightmare on Elm Street. The Cenobites work as a one-time shock, not an element you become familiar with.

Only seen the first before this month.1>2>Inferno>Bloodlines>Hellworld>Hell on Earth>Judgement>Hellseeker>Remake>Deader>RevelationsI don't care that Inferno has little to do with the lore of the series, it's a legitimately great movie with fun effects and probably the single best performance in all 11 movies with Craig Sheffer.

>>223959480I said I was generous when I included the third one. But its the point where you should go >yeah this is getting stupid nowand tune out from the even dumber things that came after.
>>223957763What gets me, is that everyone knows the box is named "Lament Configuration". I wouldn't fucking open a thing with such a name, no matter what "It's a gate to otherworldly pleasure, trust me bro!" arguments I'd hear. Yeah no, fuck you, open it yourself.
Tranny Pinhead in the novel deserves more regconition. She is kinda like Barker's personal OC Donut Steel waifu and i respect that.
>>2239587453 felt like the studio wanted Pinhead to be another Freddy, so they removed any nuance and just made him evil killer demon monster, then I think that 4 is interesting again with a multi-generational story following the descendants of the original creator of the Lament Configuration, and their encounters with the minions of Leviathan, and it's the chronological conclusion to the entire saga.
>>223958763Hedonism means you don't have control to all of your desires, that includes reckless sexual intercourse and putting your ego and dignity aside to endulge in sastify whatever your primitive joy needs.
>>223960517It was Clive Barker's fault to obscure the sexual femboy Pinhead from the book and went for generic demon from hell, which was a more marketable villain.
>>223954145Edgelord torture porn for low brow tards
>>223954145I'm actually fond of the whole series and like the idea of just putting cenobites into any random script you've got lying around. All those sequels are quintessential straight to video 90s schlock.

>>223954145Only the first movie and rhe video game that was released recently was good. I think Clive Barker has a better ratio of video games than movies with only Jericho sucking ass
>>223954246>>223956686Rewatched the first four at most 6 months ago and had already forgotten that fourth was the space one. The first two I doubt I can ever forget, the third is just whatever.
>>223961074Barker is a multi talented man but i believe his career as a novelist is the most successful and his creature designs for his books are pretty sick, too.
>>223954145I've only seen the first 2 but the 1st is my all time favorite horror movie. It has its flaws, but the designs were amazing and I loved the theme and execution. I liked 2, but thought it was a bit too sloppy compared to 1 (where only the climax scene is really not great).I heard the rest is even worse so didn't bother looking at more content though.
>>223954257That kid used to annoy me so much when I was a kid.
>>223954433To be fair, Kirsty is really hot.
>>223954468Imagine looking at that design, and saying "Yup!"
>>223954417Good job they cut this scene, yikes. People think Channard x Leviathan taking out Pinhead and co diminished their power level? This cut scene is way more humiliating.
>>223954145The original is cool, a simple story with great effect, a chaotic monster and villains you want to hate. Two is interesting, with the expanded lore of Leviathan and the labyrinth. I would like to see more about that. The ending is kind of retarded with Channards quips.Never saw the others lol.
>>223954145Watched the first one for the first time not too long ago, good movie overall and Julia's portrayal is a brutal redpill on the psychology of women and why you shouldn't act like a clueless simp around your wife.
>>223954145casting a tranny as a horrifying sex torture demon was by far the best casting decision of 2022
if those nails are driven into Pinheads skull then how can he make facial expressions?
>>223963462It hurts.just how he likes it
>>223954145would a female pinhead work?
>>223958576I like the gritty absurd feel of his movies but it gets too homo in some parts. I have to compartmentalize it as just part of their world or some level of perversion like the monsters in the movie. So that makes it more palatable. I like horror adventure movies like that. It's really good. But all i've got are clive barker movies, in the mouth of madness, the ninth gate, evil dead 2 the thing and a few random movies like that. It's a really small niche that's hard to find.
Now that's some sweet suffering, I'll tell ya what.

I have a pet theory that I have repeated on this board MANY, MANY TIMES. I will repeat it again: (I like to believe that) the black doctor in the middle of the movie (played by one Raul Newney), the guy who hands the box back to Kirsty, is the "next customer", seen only in silhouette at the end of the original film. The short afro hair and nose look about right when compared with the silhouette. It makes total sense. He had it in his possession just long enough to get curious about it, to regret giving it back to her. Also, the idea of a doctor becoming obsessed with the box goes right into the next film.
For comparison, here is a still of the final shot of the original film. If it was a coincidence and Newney is not playing the figure at right, then it's a very nice coincidence and it supports my very reasonable headcanon.
>>223956260
>>223968912perhaps. something very off about him, the nurse, that hospital room. like Kirsty is being toyed even if the box is closed up at that point. strange things afoot after it's opened regardless
>>223969953they’re leaving trails for us
>>223968912>>223969953The entire hospital scene is where I feel the first movie starts to go awry. What's a very coherent story starts to sacrifice its final act for the sake of cheap horror tropes at this point and from then on its practically just a comedy skit full of 'come to daddy' statements and irrational mind games from Kirsty's step-mother and uncle. It also breaks potential rules and lore with the cenobites, showing that the box and cenobites don't actually adhere to any order, they're just cheap horror movie monsters that want to torment Kirsty.

>>223970263>>223970294Kirstys BF serves zero functional purpose in the movie at all, youl could remove him entirely and nothing would changeI always disliked how the Cenobites didnt make the deal with Kirsty, she led to Frank and they still tried to get her. And they jobbed hard too, Butterball doesnt even get banished back or anything, he just gets knocked out by the ceiling crumbling. And the little slap fight over the box with the engineer monster at the end was silly i still love the movie but its got its flaws definitely
>>223970315absolute dogshit
>>223970315>We have such pies to show you.
Just finished the second movie. Did Kristy really just wear Julia's skin and French kiss a cenobite? What the fuck
>>223954970>That would be because the entirety of the movie is hallucinations and dream sequences that don't actually happen. Its like the director phoned it in for an hour and a half.So a very meta torturing of the audience as if the director had been a cenobite himself with a desire to make the audience experience the pain of losing their money and time.
>>223971129>Kirstys BF serves zero functional purpose in the movie at all, youl could remove him entirely and nothing would changeMy favorite was how during the slapfight with the engineer monster, Kristy's bf tried to grab the box from Kristy's hands and she has to wrestle it away from him lmao. That happening in between the state down shots was the cherry on top
>>223954145Im weirdly trying to watch the first one right now. Its rough, the handsome women brother cucking has put me to literal sleep the last two nights of me trying to watch it.
>>223971417KINOOOOOOO
>>223967856Wasn't that the plot to Constantine?
>>223954145We like the first film and the recent game. The rest is forgettable.
>>223965999You open the bob, I came.
>>223954145for me I thought it was pretty shit
>>223970860For me, it's how the women kept their slut heels on throughout the entire movie despite being the victims of a supernatural home invasion.
>>223963455>>223966071It would have worked great in a traditional Hellraiser movie, but the remake basically removes all sex/bdsm elements from the story entirely so the tranny Pinhead just seems stupid Not to mention he/she isn't scary or intimidating in the slightest
>>223972148the plot is way too convoluted. you can tell they were straining for a way to make it a slasher.
>>223970315IT STINKS AND I DON’T LIKE IT!
lol, someone made another thread just now
>>223954367I fucking hate three
>>223955486Judgement had its own appeal though, a modern day twist where the sinners are lured to go somewhere rather than find some obscure box. It had a very corporate feeling and somehow that made it one of my favorites.Remake was also pretty damn good imo but i'm a fanboy.
>>223954685It's just an analogy for taking it in the ass, it hurts but is also pleasurable (for homos I guess)
>>223960762I already watched 3 and 4 because I had plenty of time today. They weren't so bad that I won't watch the rest. As far as horror franchises go it's better than Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Probably Halloween as well because although I know I've seen all of them I can only rember the first one.
