Summoned to exorcise a spirit from an isolated country house by the new owner, Teiko (Tae Kimura), she comes face to face with a grotesque apparition with powers that defy Airi’s experience. Faced with skepticism from Teiko’s son, Gunji (Kento Kako), she digs deeper into the house’s past until a secret comes to light — and Airi finds herself hunted by a far more unpredictable force. For the first time, her greatest adversary is not the supernatural, but the living. Director Dave Boyle spins a uniquely terrifying and hauntingly atmospheric ghost story.FINALLY, SOME JAPANESE GHOST HORROR KINO!MAKE THIS YOUR PRIORITY TONIGHT!POSSIBLY THE BEST HORROR MOVIE YOU WILL SEE THIS YEAR ACCORDING TO CRITICS!GET SOME SUSHI AND WATCH THIS FOR VOD TUESDAY!

>>223969583The 90s and 00s Japanese horror trend was centered around three filmmakers. Takashi Miike, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu.Miike and Kurosawa are genuine artistic voices who came into their own stylistically around the same time in the late 80s early 90s (and both started mainly in pinku films). Being versatile filmmakers they have subsequently dabbled in more than horror (with Miike often being a work for hire for shlock, although even the shlock often has his unhinged trademarks, he is sort of similar to Sion Sono) while Nakata and Shimizu kept dabbling in horror but sadly did not have the talent and essentially ended up making careers on largely Z-movie slop. Shimizu's Ju-on is frankly overrated and passable while Nakata's Ringu adaptation is great but the quality of both of these films is actually largely on Kiyoshi Kurosawa who is never brought up in discussion but in fact had a massive influence on films of Nakata and Shimizu during that time. He was friends with Nakata and in fact was originally meant to direct Ringu but passed on the opportunity to Nakata and lent him his cinematographer at the time. This is why Ringu and Dark Water are so similar to Kiyoshi Kurosawa's style. And he new Shimizu through an omnibus (collection of shorts) film called School Ghost Story G for which Shimizu directed a short that serves as a precursor for Ju-on, and when finally getting to feature Ju-on movies he likely was influenced by Kiyoshi Kurosawa too as you can see the visual / aesthetic similarities. This filmmaking soup had it's influence on Japanese horror cinema in general but as Miike and Kurosawa moved on Japanese horror mostly devolved into the same shlock as any other country's average horror productions.
Of course there's also Noroi: The Curse but it's cult status is a latter thing and it's lightning in a bottle as Koji Shiraishi is too mainly a Z-rate slop maker. Sometimes people bring up films like Hausu or Onibaba but neither is horror in the usual sense. Hausu really is a surreal avant-garde movie which people find scary / off-putting but Nobuhiko Obayashi's intentions were actually likely more comedic than anything. Onibaba is just a magical realist / folklore movie. Mafical realism can intercept with horror because of the supernatural but it's not the first thing people think about when hearing "horror".
>three filmmakers Fugg I meant four. You can count.

>>2239548689/10 for the location and cinematography6/10 for everything elseThe Cycle was a better horror movie this year but critics will jerk off to this flick
>>223969583J-horror just got stale in the 2000s and distributors stopped promoting the movies to the west pretty much. I would say there's been more interesting films in the past 5 years but they haven't been marketed well either and it's cool to be anti-weeb for nu-/tv/
