I was so hyped for a new fresh take on Dune that I cagily avoided all marketing materials, all trailers, and all commercials. I wanted to go into the new movies with an entirely open mind, as pure as an Amish virgin. On opening night I knew Stellan Skarsgård played the baron Harkonnen (that much was hard to avoid, even though I shielded my eyes), but little else. I didn't even know if all the characters from the book would show up.

When Zendaya was revealed as Chani, I let out an audible gasp. My entire row of filmgoers looked at me like I was nuts, but I couldn't help myself. There before me was the most Simian creature I'd ever seen on Arrakis. A boyish gorilla girl with huge flaring nigger nostrils and big Nigerian chieftain eyebrows. And apparently she was Chani.

Oftentimes film studios will soften the blow by casting Zoe Saldana or Halle Berry... but not this time. This time you were forced to feast your eyes on the brownest most boyish looking ironing board of a woman, blown up forty feet high on an IMAX screen.

I looked around, uncomprehendingly, as the rest of the crowd seemed to accept this monstrosity as Chani. Then it occurred to me that I was the only person who hadn't already seen months' worth of marketing materials.

Little by little, they had been led to accept this by drips and drabs of commercials, trailers, and TV interviews. Their minds had been so softened that they were willing to stare unflinchingly as Zendaya made her signature ZendayaFaces™.

Lots of people debate about the exact moment when Dune died. I contend it was when that eternally frowning deadpan charisma black hole Zendaya with her Lovecraftian face was revealed as Chani to the audience.

Well, I'm just sincere. I didn't like Chapterhouse that much and I think it is a hard read because of its structure. The story is not hard to follow, by the way. Just the idea of personified ideas and strategic meetings can be tiresome to read at some point. I liked Odrade in Heretics, but in Chapterhouse she became more of a living archetype than an actual character; still interesting, but less intriguing than before, or than other characters from the first novels. My advice? Take it slowly. One chapter daily, in example. Even with brain fog and attention spam problems it might be a good way to finally finish this novel at some point.

I think Frank absolutely intended to write more books at one time, but with Bev gone and his own health failing him, he knew he didn't have another book in him and Chapterhouse was the only ending to Dune he was going to write.

Marty even says something like "it's a shame they got away, I had a great planet saved for them, it would have been a real adventure, a test of their abilities" only for Daniel to respond "that's nice dear, maybe smell the roses instead". I never read anything Dune related after the og Frank books, especially when everything looked like prequels which I despise.
