or is this movie awful?

how did it win three oscars?
how drunk was coppola?
and, most perplexing of all, how the FUCK did keanu have a career after this?
winona ryder in a sheer nightgown was kino thoughbeit.
>>
It's pretty good, it's a decent adaptation of the book, Oldman and Hopkins are great in it, and it looks interesting

> it's a decent adaptation of the book,
No it wasn’t. Dracula was not literally Vlad The Impaler. Nor did he go to England because some woman looked like his dead wife. He didn’t care about Minia, he wanted to corrupt her soul and innocence. “Traveled oceans of time”
horseshif. And Oldman over acted like he almost always does. Dracula wasn’t some sperg but cold and calculated

Its great. The practical effect are phenomenal.
>and, most perplexing of all, how the FUCK did keanu have a career after this?
lmao he really is terrible. I always assumed he had to have been some executive's boytoy that got forced onto the movie.
>>
>>223964911
Yeah that whole part is made up but most of the story beats are there. Also Tom Waits was great as Renfield
>>
>>223964797
Dracula in the book is pure fucking evil, I don't know why they turned this into a love story?
>>
>>223965003
Which is fine but don’t call it Bram Stoker’s Dracula because you are insinuating it will be a faithful adaption and it wast anything but
>>
>>223964797
There's a lot to criticize and a lot to appreciate. It's maybe the only version of Dracula to feature all the main characters from the book, which is confusing, which is why no other movie has attempted to pull it off; but for purists interested in fidelity to the novel it's quite interesting.

The film also is loyal to the book's narrative framing of written letters, making for a beautiful scene with a dissolve of a locomotive in the background.

The shadow puppetry in the prologue is innovative, along with the unique costume choices. However, the latter is not congruent with the book, nor is Dracula's general appearance. But it is all eye catching.

Everything pretty much works for me except for the final stretch of the movie in Britain--but this is, to me, faithful to the book as well. I did not care for the final chapters.

Keanu Reeves is, of course, hilarious.

This. Egger’s Nosferatu is the closest to book Dracula

I still need to watch that, I loved The Northman

The thing is, even in 1996, it was already impossible to make a faithful adaptation of the book. That book is anchored in its time and place, promoting victorian catholetic values that are not relevant in modern times.

In the book the horror is that people from other countries are going to invade your country, spread diseases, corrupt your women, and the only way to survive is to stick to strong moral values such as a women should only know one man and not have sex before marriage, and catholicism.

It's basically "chuds, the book", even in 1996 you couldn't have that.

>or is this movie awful?
It's notoriously divisive. It's basically as shit as it is good.

Those are the best books though!

>even in 1996
You keep repeating this, like it's some sort of ancient history...

Dracula was written in 1897. So, 100 years before the movie came out. After that, extra 30 years on top of it mean literally nothing.

I saw it in a theater on release. i was a teenager. Even then i thought it was excellent.
I don't get how you got filtered so hard.

That's basically the reaction to every Keanu Reeves performance after Bill&Ted

the answer is: he makes for a good self insert

I did, I'm Icelandic.
>>
>>223965252
Lol, it would be impossible because in the book Dracula doesn't have any personality and is just a boring monster. The ending is also very anticlimactic.
>>
>>223965368
Everyone shits on Kenu but his acting always been wooden and bad. No one shits in Oldman’s terrible over acting
>>
>>223965348
you should attempt a rewatch. there are strengths but i find the flaws to be too numerous to ignore. i honestly cannot tell if coppola's vision was massacred in the editing room or if there was a wizard of an editor that salvaged what they did.

i'm off to watch nosferatu now.

I'm so sick of people turning Dracula into a love story. And what pisses me off more is every time you complain about it people come and tell you
>"that's what its like in the book!"
But its not. I've read the fucking book. Why does everyone pretend they've read it when they clearly havent? Mina was ready to kill herself rather than submit to Dracula, and Dracula wanted her out of lust and cruelty, not out of love. There was absolutely no Dracula romance in the original story.
>>
>>223965442
Yeah, nothing sexy about Dracula in the book. He's more like a disgusting horny zombie.
>>
The book ending sucks. Nosferatu unironically has the best, most fitting ending.

This. Why I loved Egger’s Nosferatu and a lot of women hated it. He was a hideous evil monster that wants to corrupt her innocence just like Dracula in the book. Only difference is he stays ugly the entire movie instead getting younger and less ugly with the more blood he drinks

>was I filtered?

Very much so, OP. It’s a fucked up kino love story that just so happens to be Dracula centric. The effects alone are also primo kino, so it kinda has everything in spades. Yo ass got filtered!
>>
did anyone watch this?

Extremely.
>>
>>223965672
The fucking ending was top choice narm
>>
>>223965672
They finally made this? This been bouncing around production hell for decades
>>
>>223965795
It was really bad, black doctor in the 1800's fuck off move!
>>
>>223965672
Yeah, it was kinda shit minus a couple of good creepy scenes. Unfortunately it was bogged down by forced (((diversity)))
>>
>>223964911
Why did Vlad want to move to England so bad?
>>
>>223967072
He loves the culture and wants to know more and eat the women
>>
>>223967072
Romanians and gypsy population were onto him in his native land and why he was old and weak do to steady victims. He needed new hunting grounds with a naive population aka England
>>
>>223967072
english roses needed decaying.
>>
>>223964797
It's kind of annoying in that it's almost good but not.

The whole aesthetic, most of the cast, the production design, makeup, costumes, music, all top notch and very cool. The Lucy stuff was very well done (although the werewolf rape was a bit much). The castle stuff is nice too.

But then Keanu's performance, and the whole Mina/Dracula romance plot which takes over the end of the movie, drags it down and is just fucking irritating and dumb. Mina is made into an unlikeable adulteress (not the first time, granted), and immediately forgives him for killing Lucy, and we're supposed to accept Dracula is not so bad/loveable/redeemable after we watch him feed a fucking infant to his vampire bitches? Should've gone with an actually evil Dracula rather than this women's romance shit.

Add on the mickey mouse happy ending where he finds salvation!
