Who the hell was talking shit the other day about it? I just watched and it's a great movie. Wtf?

The South will fly again.

It is pretty good. Worst part of the movie was the weird jew kid. The scene where he realized what was going on and stuttered "Y... y... y... you sly devil!" was so cringe wtf.
>>
>>223965519
It was good except the actor that played Carter was a charisma void. Cared more about about his hamburger dog then him
>>
>>223965519
Many such cases.
>>
>>223965519
>loved this movie back in the day
>remembered the poor director got crucified for it
>literally just now wonder what he's been up to since
>look him up
>his latest movie is some "science the shit out of this" wokeslop about a white woman falling in love with a black guy
It's all so tiresome holy shit what the fuck

It's got a sweaty boob lady and Willem Dafoe as an alien, it's got everything. Confirmed Kino.
>>
>>223965848
the whole movie was a mass of charisma voids, it was as barren of soul as the red planet itself
>>
>>223965519
It’s avatar except on planet Arizona.
>>
>>223965519
A shame that this killed all interest in Barsoom
>>
>>223965519
It's crazy how literally every 6/10 from decades ago feels like a 9/10 now because of how awful movies have become.
>>
>>223966498
It's crazy how stupid you are.
>>
>>223966259
Yeah the movie really needed big name charismatic actors to sell it. John Carter wasn’t going to sell itself. Most people never even heard of the influential books. Tom Cruise was interested in playing Carter

As a native Arizonian, this is 100% accurate.
>>
>>223966436
No one ever has interest in seminal fiction beyond charting what it influenced.
>>
>>223965519
Its a bit too bloated, especially towards the end.
Its a fun film though and compared to CapeShit I'd say its an A-
>>
>>223965519
I marathoned the first hour or so but couldn’t get past the point

>Better than Avatar
>Better than planet of the apes
>Better than Villeneuve Dunc

It´s not the case with this one but this does happen quite often these days. Hollywood just phased out the romanticism ethereal quality of cinema in favor of making everything more grounded and mundane and it´s fucking atrocious. This is not an opinion but a documented trend that can be observed.

Burton´s Batman recognized its comic book origins, it realized it was second hand representation and didn´t fear to exaggerate the corruption and madness of Gotham because it understood that exaggeration was needed for characters like Batman and the Joker to exist. David Lynch understood the Bene Gesserit from Dune and Paul Artreides himself needed to evoke mystery and mysticism to sell the whole messiah plot, the 1997 Odyssey miniseries and 2004 Troy understood epics are about men challenging impossible odds to return home, fighting a 10 year war over a women or the need to achieving glory in combat, the original SW trilogy and even the prequels understood they were family stories and hero´s journeys.

Movies these days don´t seem to understand any of that. They go about mundane shit like focusing on the strategic value of an island or the value about this or that natural resource, cheap shallow political ideology that mirrors the context of production or shit like that. Then again current society is more materialistic so movies are just a reflection of that but it still blows.

I avoided it for years, because "John Carter of Mars" is the last book in the series, which had me pissed at them for not starting where they should have started.
I am not a clever man.
>>
>>223965519
its ok movie. flawed in many ways, but has some soul to it, primarily because its still john carter of mars at its core. john actor has no charisma. literal vaccuum on screen in everything hes ever been in. hard to carry. princess needed to have hotter costume and lose 10-15 lbs. cgi didnt look good even at time with the aliens and didnt age well.
>>
>>223967230
It’s worse than avatar in literally every way what are you babbling about. That’s why it failed.
>>
>>223967230
>better than
it does not possess the necessary qualities to be a good film unless you're measuring purely on some hollywood producer checklist. there is some artistic core to films even if they're cgi schlock.
>>
>>223967835
My judgment is objective and accounts for all narrative and artistic elements from clear objectives and character motivations all the way to art design, composition and use of color. Off course i judge it within the parameters expected of a fantasy adventure hero´s journey Hollywood movie and not with the bar i´d use for author movies but there´d be no point to judge it against those.

>>223967804
Wrong. If i had to provide a reason i´d say it was just unlucky. Back then audiences were entitled and could afford to disregard movies over the silliest most insignificant things. Audiences were not starved like they are now and discussions didn´t revolve around box office numbers and the like. Nobody really thought whole genres would disappear over 2 or 3 movies failing. It was a more civilized time.
>>
>>223969521
what part of heroes journey adventure is hot alien music video?
>>
>>223965519
>Movie was supposed to be 'John Carter of Mars'
>But somewhere someone thought people would confuse the film with "Mars Needs Moms"
>So they dropped half the title and now the title has no context of what it's about
>>
>>223969521
It’s a movie I can appreciate as a passion project since Andrew Stanton is clearly a huge fan of the source material, but it was clearly a messy production with lots of rewrites/reshoots.
>>
>>223969599
Honest to God I thought it was a romantic comedy with that name and seeing none of the trailers
