The show never made it feel like it was even worth it to be in the Mafia. Chris just seemed like he did alright. His apartment with Adrianna wasn't even that nice, neither was his car. Tony was doing good, but he was basically the only one.
>>
being a junkie didn't help
>>
Did you not watch season 6 where he bought a nice house and was driving the king of New Yorks Maserati?
>>
Even as a boss everyone will hate the shit out of you by the time you get old, that is if you survive that long.

this is literally pointed out in the first 30 seconds of the show's narration

The genius of the show is that it shows that mafiasos are losers and lazy at the end of the day.

They all did pretty well, anon, able to spend hundreds of thousands. They all made money, they were just paying for wives, girlfriends, kids and poor spending habits.
>>
>>223967122
They're pathetic chumps who boost TVs and dvd players. The show reflects perfectly how these grease balls in real life weren't even good at being criminals just like any hood black gang. Twenty years later they've all folded on themselves and anyone left in that kind of life is working for Mexican cartels.
>>
>>223966865
they made decent money. they were just classless cretins who spent it on gauchy gifts for their wives & mistresses, gambled it away, or invested it into doing more crime

Chrissy had the best fits on the show. He dressed nice, drove a Lexus, Maserati, and other high end luxury cars. I think most members in the family lived in shitty apartments if they didn’t have a family/kids, etc Chrissy, Paulie, and Junior. Rest did alright although not on Tony’s level.
Lotta benefits too. Despite the consequence of life in prison or getting whacked over the smallest inconivence/mistake, you would literally live as a King that couldn’t tolerate any disrespect in life besides from ur boss. Money, pussy, and fun would always be in ur grasp. It’s a trade I would take
>You missed the point by idolizing them
I don’t fucking care. A lavish lifestyle of banting with psychopaths while wagecucks rot away seems nice even if it meant you eventually landing in jail or getting shot
>>
>>223967233
It's true of the mafia in NJ for sure, but not in NYC or even Philadelphia. The mob is still very much active and making millions a year from various rackets. The real life Jersey mob was always a mere extension of the Genovese faction of the NYC mafia.
>>
>>223967248
Normalfags are so afraid of dying that they'll gladly wagecuck until they're old and frail. They're allergic to taking risks.
>>
>>223967248
Junior didn't live large is all, then lost most during the trial through seizures and lawyers. Sil did very well, but he had the Bing.

The only two we see a lot of who were "broke" were Pussy and Paulie, but Paulie was the type to scream he was broke with a million under his mattress.
>>
>>223966865
>The show never made it feel like it was even worth it to be in the Mafia
That's the point.
>>
How was Tony able to get so rich? In the first few episodes he’s still one of Jackie’s capos but has the giant mansion, the boat, the cars, wads of cash just laying around, etc.
Didn’t Jackie ever wonder why one of his underlings was doing better than him financially?
>>
>>223967998
Back in the day that's what you could afford working one summer at McDonald's.
>>
>>223966865
I'm on season 5 at the beginning, where he and Paulie are bitching back and forth about Chris always having to pay for their meals.
How old is Chris supposed to be, and how long had he been in the mafia? At what point are his dues paid?
>>
>>223967998
Tony was a very good earner, anon, and been a hood all his life. Capos can make good bank, millions.
It's not suggested Tony had more than Jackie, who wasn't boss all that long.
>>
>>223967386
>Paulie was the type to scream he was broke with a million under his mattress.
I swear thats a line right outta the show.
>>
>>223967998
He's got that sanitation job where most of the income is funneled to him. Also he was smart compared to the average goon so it's likely he had a history of good business deals.
>>
>>223966865
True to life. Most criminals are poor losers, the Pablo Escobar type is very rare.
>>
>>223967048
They're not losers. They're highly successful in their own subculture, and all of them could be called brave, since they risk their lives and commit capital crimes.
>>
>>223966940
Jealous fed hands typed this post.
>>
>>223968060
Paulie and Olivia were very similar.
>>
>>223966865
It's one of those things that seems nice on the surface but actually isn't. That's why they always wanted their kids to avoid that life. You don't really make any money unless you become a captain and you always need to worry about going to prison or being killed.
>>
>>223968050
Chis is in his 30's and he was likely working for tony a long time but was only a made man for a short period. Some mafia guys can spend 20 years or never before they get made, it all depends on if the family is accepting new members or not.
>At what point are his dues paid?
either when he gets promoted to captain or if new guys become members so he isn't the new guy anymore.
>>
>>223968292
Least he's related to Tony, so he's got that going for him too.
>>
>>223966865

>>
>>223967998

>>
>>223968315

>>
>>223968292
Chris is meant to be about 10-13 years or so younger than Tony, I guess.
>either when he gets promoted to captain or if new guys become members so he isn't the new guy anymore.
He'd never get respect. That's kind of the point of his arc, something he realizes near the end. It wasn't just being a new guy, it was the nature of Tony's generation. A bunch of hypocrites who treated everyone like shit and then cried about muh love and loyalty.
>>
>>223968361
it was mostly Paulie not giving him respect.
>>
>>223966865

It's almost as if the show was trying to teach the perceptive observer a lesson. By the sounds of it, you yourself are one of these perceptive observers.
>>
>>223968410
>being a murderer is... le bad
woah
>>
>>223968408
Neither did Tony or Sil. The whole scene of them making fun of his daughter is there for a reason.
>>
>>223968423
they weren't murderers. They were soldiers killing other soldiers. Nobody innocent died.
>>
>>223968444
that was later on and he was such a fuck up that his lack of respect was deserved. Tony was trying to groom him to become boss one day.
>>
>>223966865
Isn't that the point? Everyone came in when the downfall was underway and the older guys clinging to power after years in jail got the same harsh wake-up as the younger guys
>>
>>223967122
But they don't for either?
>>
>Tony was only making $1 million a year
>>
>>223968475
>that was later on
That's the point, anon. After everything, years of service, being made, siding with Tony over Ade and multiple hits, they still laugh in his face. They would never respect him. Tony wasn't setting him up to be Boss, he was setting up another lightning rod like Junior.
>>
I mean he drove a Lexus and you to be careful due to IRS and feds
>>
>>223968050
Never.
>>223968292
None of them ever pay their dues. There is no paying your dues. Tony would kill anyone at the drop of a hat and they all repeatedly say "youre only as good as your last envelope" meaning there was no paying your dues. You are perpetually in debt forever as a raped kikeslave and at any time you can and will be disposed of if you even mildly inconvenience someone and they're in a bad mood.
>>
>>223966865
>The show never made it feel like it was even worth it to be in the Mafia.
yeah, that's the fucking point. it's supposed to be about the mafia or at least the NJ section, dying (when we know they weren't, but the mob has been feeding us that lie since goodfellas)
>>

Exactly, anon. I think Junior was pretty loaded, but most everything of his would have been under seizure when he was arrested like John's assets were. Then there's the cost of the trial itself and medical bills, plus Tony took most of his normal street income.

Junior kept things low key. It's how the older guys stay out of jail.

I didn't think it was possible for me to hate Italian Americans more than I already did, but this show made it possible.
>>
>>223968783
No it's the Mafia going away problem. Italians were aiming to be middle class and above. The only ones that would choose it, were both born into it and too retarded to do anything else.
>>
>>223966865
That's kinda the point. Mafiosos are retards. Tony could have had that same lifestyle if he actually did run a waste management company legitimately.

Back in the day you'd have fresh off the boat Italians facing actual discrimination, so the mafia served a somewhat natural purpose in carving out something for their community. But then time went on and the heads of these families would fuck up their own neighborhoods with drugs and vice, scam morons with crooked poker games and boost trucks of Pokémon cards and stereos, all just so they could afford the kind of house and car your average dentist enjoys.

Tony came in at the end of the American Dream, he missed out on the glory days, the life isn't even worth it but it's all he knows and it's the only way he can feel like a man. He talks himself up like he's one of those old school dons who uplifts the community, then sells out the old neighborhood to Jamba Juice.
>>
>>223967048
This. They really cracked something compelling by having all the mafiosos be either empathetic, hilarious, or monstrous at any given moment.
Christopher is a goofy retard who also treats his girlfriend horribly but who we still want to see escape this life. It's a fine line to walk.

They may have been successful financially, but they were all spiritually corrupt. They all claim to be catholic while simultaneously being killers, cheaters and basically overall sinners. It's like in that scene where Christopher becomes a made man in that pseudo-religious ceremony and is disturbed when he sees the bird outside the window. It's like the bird represents the Holy Spirit or God, and Tony is the devil, stealing his soul away from spiritual righteousness. Money is useful in this life, but their catholic beliefs dictate that they can't take that money with them after they die, so by their own purported philosophy, they're being hypocrites.

Yeah it was great. It showed a completely unglamorized depiction of the mob life. No operatic Scorcese rise and fall (not that Goodfellas and Casino aren't great movies mind you) no "I would do it all again". No camaraderie and sense of community before the third act betrayals, Just dingy grimy misery with people who all hate each other. Like for all the evil and suffering they bring to the world, they don't live any better off than if they had just gone straight. They sold their souls for nothing. At least Faust got a few years of the high life before the bill came due. It's a terrific show.

Didn't everyone treat him as the defacto head of the family because he pulled so much money, especially under Junior?
>>
>>223967998
he wasnt "rich". stuff was just cheaper back then. his house sold for 200,000$ in 1997. today, its....2.2 million dollars. the house increased in value eleven times. its the exact same house, nothing has changed but its over 10 times the price. did your wages go up 10 times compared to what the average salary was in 1997?

minimum wage in 1997 was 5.25 or something. today its 7.25 or so. tony sopranos house was not a mansion. it was something someone legitimately operating a sanitation business as a full on career could acquire. had the house followed inflation and remained at what it was "worth" in 1997, it should be at best, 420,000 dollarydoos.

The whole point of the show was to denigrate Italian Americans. David Chase hated his parents and his ancestry, and he wanted to humiliate Italian Americans to gain the favor of his black and jewish friends. They're always portrayed as crass retards who are responsible for black crime and fundamentally immoral compared to the jews. The Many Saints of Newark proved all of this; Chase had full license to pour his hatred of who he was into every scene.

Richard LaPenna was unironically correct, the media's portrayal of Italian Americans is disgusting and false.

>still able to buy a McMansion
That's still not an impressive feat. They're called McMansions because they're garbage. Also, Vito is an idiot who let greed be his downfall. Dude was on the cusp of a great life where he could be an honest man and spend time with someone he loved. Instead, he runs back to a group that rejects him, but paid him a lot of money. His storyline is one of the best in the series as it reflects the story of a prince leaving his fortune to pursue adventure and fulfilment (classic hero's journey), but Vito gave in to his temptations instead of completing the journey.

He wasn't buy a Chiron rich but he was certainly a wealthy man. Just take a look at the house Chris buys in the final season, hes not on minimum wage lol
>>
>>223966865
they addressed this directly, forget the details but i think it was after chrissie got made but realized they only get as much as their last flim flam and they have to pay a tax on that.
>>
>>223967998
He had drugs, casinos, poker games, protection rackets and the strip club. All that alone would make serious bank. Then add in the fact he gets 10% of what everyone else makes for doing nothing at all and it's not hard to understand how he is rich

that's just capitalism

That was when he just got made. But yeah, even then he was having to borrow money from Ade and pull jobs to make his kick.

THNAKS FOR THE FUCKING SPOILERS YOU DUMB FUCKING ABORTED PIECE OF FUCKING PUSS PISS SHIT CUNT ASS
>>
>>223975834
No he didn't lol. He got a small cut from the poker games and Silvios strip club and that's it. He only lost money to casinos and the show made a point that protection rackets are an obsolete thing.

>The show never made it feel like it was even worth it to be in the Mafia.
iirc the first episode basically says with the rico laws and everything, the party is over and that generation showed up at the end. why do you think tony never involves AJ like his father did him? partly because he knows his son is a worm who wouldn’t make it but also because he knows there is no future in it
>>
you can tell the anons who make these threads have never had a real job, anything is better than a 9 to 5 (or even worse, retail)
>>

This show came out before you were born this is on you for putting off watching a wildly popular show for so long
>>
Christopher always had nice cars.
Lexus LS 400
Range Rover
Mercedes CLK 430
Pontiac GXP
Maserati Coupe (bought from Johnny Sack)
BMW M3 convertible (bought stolen from Pussy)
BMW Z3 (the writer's clown car)
Hummer H2
Cadillac Escalade EXT

And nice clothes and a Cartier watch.
"Nigger rich," as they say.

>>223968576
Don't worry, David Chase finally got to put his cuck fantasies on film with Many Saints. He even makes a Moltisanti get cuckolded so it's the next best thing.

Criminals are superstitious and very, very religious. It's a low IQ thing.
>>
>>223967248
Even while obviously criticizing the characters and actions, the show still massively romanticized and glamorized many aspects of being in the mafia. In reality, it was a pyramid scheme where most of the people involved were dumb as fuck barely making ends meet.
>>
>>223976619
Well the main characters are the ones in good position. Then the show includes several retarded mooks who basically exist to get whacked.

That's implied in the first episode, anon, when Tony patronizingly talks about him buying the Lexus, implying he was buying over his head.

Isn't there also commentary on how most of these guys aren't even making more money than they would with an honest job? Or is that a different mob show

>>223976756
Different show, but yeah. Being a hood is self-employment. You're only as good as you can scheme and you're not pulling scores all the time. Like jacking trucks. You're not doing that every week.

Most mob guys actually have real jobs with crime being a bit of a side hustle. That's in the show, too. Tony with garbage, Pussy with the shop, Sil with the club, Feech with his store, etc.
>>
>>223968444
I think Tony and Tony B ganging up on him about his sobriety was another strong display of it. He'll always get little brothered by his peers until they die off and he has seniority, but that's potentially decades away before it all goes to shit. At the same time, Chris was a serial fuck up, but he was set up to fail by the guys around/above him.
>>
>>223976756
They might not but then again they probably got a lot of free stuff.

and when you don't manage to kick up the desired amount then it adds up and after a while you will be killed or given to the cops

anatoly dyatlov, whatever happened there?
>>
>>223966918
Yeah, after Tony ordered Silvio to kill the love of of his life. Christopher got promoted past other longer serving, more competent mobsters, who all resented him and openly disrespected him to his face while Tony laughed along. Christipher was a dumb asshole, but he had just enough self awareness to realize how empty it all was. He's only a little happy when he gets to make his movie, and even then, gets killed like a week later
>>
>>223966865
it came out after Freakenomics, which had already told everyone that being in organised crime is no better than a minimum wage job. being in the soprano gang meant you spent almost all your time with the others in gang and spent most of your time just hanging around.
>>
>>223977156
>it came out after Freakenomics
sopranos first started airing in 1999, freak_o_nomics was first published in 2005
>>
>>223967386
Junior traveled a lot in his youth and got lots of trim, and even in the first season had a girlfriend he was still fucking while taking trips to Florida. Pussy owned an auto body shop and lived in a nice house in the suburbs while sending his kids to college, he just felt like he should've had more. Paulie also had plenty of money. His little condo was enough for him, but he also always had nice new cars, manicures, and is probably paying his mistress's rent
>>
>>223972359
They addressed this in season 1.melfi pointed out that tony was a sanitation manager and his neighbor was a pediatrician. She was implying that she knew he was lying about his career.
>>
>>223968408
None of them respected Christopher because he was bad at the job and kept getting promoted anyway because he's Carmella's cousin or whatever he was
>>
>>223977135
>and openly disrespected him to his face while Tony laughed along
Literally nobody did this besides Paulie (asshole to everyone) and Artie that one time

Being unable to step over minor and often unintentional slights sounds like a source of endless stress.

I don't think he was necessarily worse at his job than Paulie.
