This was dogshit

And I'm not even trying to taunt, I'm so disappointed in this movie after all the ass-kissing that it's been receiving.
They tried to reverse the trope by having Nicky be possessed immediately and skipping the mystery part but they didn't follow it up with anything clever, the entire horror element of this film is this woman either screaming, making retarded faces or extremely loud music, so it's like every other horror movie from the past 15 years.

Also Nicky's character is a detriment to the story, her scenes are goddamn repetitive and they just stop the film dead in its tracks completely every 15 minutes or so, and we're forced to watch this dumb broad act """""scary""""" for another 10 minutes while the plot barely goes anywhere until the very end. And don't even get me started on the embarrassing horror cliches present in so many scenes.

It feels like a movie that was designed to have people argue about it online (which is what this thread will mostly be comprised of anyway)...what a piece of fine art, huh? And there's so much more to say, I'm so disappointed...THIS was supposed to be the best horror movie ever? Is the audience for it comprised of people born in 2010?

Fuck you, /tv/. Why would you lie to me like this? WHY?!

its more a psychological horror, its the tension waiting for what crazy and fucked up thing Inde gonna do next which leads to a jumpscare thats basically the horror element

GEMINI HOME ENTERTAINMENT > BACKROOMS YOUTUBE SERIES > OBSESSION == BACKROOMS MOVIE
>>
>>223978165
Trust me, I WISH that were the case.

Forget 4Chan, this fucking movie is being worshipped in so many corners of the Internet as some sort of incredible horror sensation with a strong social commentary element, when the horror is nothing but noises and jumpscares (which we already have plenty of in every single horror movie of the past few years, as I've said already) and the social commentary, while well interwoven into the film and not too obvious, has essentially one core message: that rape is bad.

And once you undestand that, the film has no further layers of significance left to explore, it's just a well-disguised metaphor for sexual abuse at the hands of a manipulatory individual shoved in a cliched story filled with predictable horror beats. It's atrocious.

...I mean, the "scary character jumping through a car window and attacking someone" int he big '26? Really?
>>
>>223978177
>what crazy and fucked up thing Inde gonna do next

Yeah, is she gonna scream again or smile in a """"scary"""" way again? The possibilities are truly endless!

Like I've said, the "Inde" scenes are detrimental to the plot. 99% of the film goes like this:

>Bear (what a retarde name, by the way) goes out to work/hang out with people
>Minor plot developement
>Bear comes back home
>Nicky is there and acts crazy

Rinse and repeat until they the party scene, which is more Nicky acting crazy (and, again, the scene goes nowhere because people still don't believe Bear about the magic stick thing) and then the big finale.

And the "Nicky acting crazy scenes" are so goddamn boring, it's just noise, noise, noise and the occasional dumb face, and these scenes never go anywhere, EVER.
>>
>>223978112
The actors in Obsession weren't bad at all, it's just that everything is so exaggerated that they all end up overacting.

Bear is a caricature of a wimpy "nice guy" stereotype, Nicky either just screams and yell, and even before she starts screaming and yelling (in her first scene, when she's just her regular self) she's one hair dye away from being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, the fat friend is not bad but he also cranks it up a little too much, the only one who feels genuine is the girl that the film soooooo cleverly pretends is gonna live only to then be killed; she actually feels pretty genuine and not a caricature, even though I could tell from a light year away that she was going to die.

There have been at least 8,954,987,453,958,243,243,980 threads about this dumpster fire of a movie in the past few months.

I went and watched it and now I'm convinced it's all a big psyop. Certain scene were so awful I thought I was on Candid Camera and was being screwed with. It looks like a background movie that would play on someone's TV in another movie.
>>
>>223979247
>Bear is a caricature of a wimpy "nice guy" stereotype

Let's be real, if that was true this movie wouldn't have landed on /tv/ like an atomic bomb.
>>
>>223979722
Alright, remove the "nice guy" part. He's comically wimpy. And yes, it is intentional, so that weak, reclusive young man can identify in him, that's the clever part.

The part that got on my nerves is that he, like everyone else in this film, is nothing but a caricature. He's constantly going: "Ehm, uhm, like, yeah, uhm", he's panfully lacking in determination, and most of all after Nicky starts acting like a muppet on crack the most he does about it is say: "Hey, are you okay?" and of course he stays with her until the end because the title goes both ways and he's as obsessed with her as she's with him (get it?), but it's distractingly unrealistic, in an excessively over the top kind of way.

I don't care that he's an allegory for incels or whatever, every person in his situation would run for their lives.

And even putting that aside, the actor's portrayal is way too over the top and, again, caricatural.

>>223978032
It’s a typical mkultra movie commissioned by cia to engineer the impressionable foids and simps of today that’s why it was astroturfed to another stratosphere. There’s almost no artistic value to it. But that’s just my schizo take

Kek first time seeing this description of a movie. And you could say this about a lot of soulless movies now not just obsession
>>
>>223979909
It was a CLEVER character...for marketing purposes

The whole film is clever in a way that it's a very easy film to sell in this day and age, and it seems to be taylor-made to generate discussion on the Internet.
It tackles themes of sexual abuse, the main character is very "incel-ish", it has a good-looking co-star that also seems to have been created in a lab to be worshipped by desperate young men online. Just look at the first scene she appears in, she's all warm and fuzzy, the type of girl an "incel" would go crazy over because she's good looking but also feels friendly and approachable.

...and that's also my problem with the film. Again, it seems to be made to have people argue about it on the Internet. Or, sorry, it seems to be made to have argument generated AROUND it on the Internet. All the threads discussing it are 5% talking about what happens in the film and 95% people yelling at each other about wether or not Bear is a rapist or she's a whore, or other such nonsense. And don't even get me started on other social media.

And that's why it's a film that feel devoid of any artistic merit, almost like a tool to generate nebolous discussion about topics that are hip with the kids today.

It's Springtime for Hitler, except it's a horror film.

This movie had so much intentional and unintentional comedy.

Some of the jokes were pretty funny, like when Bear (I cringe every time I have to type out that name) goes back to the store and the clerk tells him the magic sticks never existed, only to go: "I'm just fucking with you"

But all the horror elements fell flat and some parts I HOPE were supposed to be comedic, like the scene where she walks in holding the vase in front of her face...I mean, are we seriously so starved for "uncanny" horror scenes that we're resorting to some retard scurrying in the room holding a vase in front of her face? What about the part where she tapes the door shut? That felt like something out of Naked Gun.

But the car window jumpscare is inexcusable, even Boris Karloff would call it a boring old cliché.

The issue I have with the movie is that I don't like it but other people do. So I tell other people not to like it because I don't like it but then they say something really stupid like "people are allowed to like different things." But then I tell them no, that's wrong, I don't like the movie so stop liking it right now. But they continue to like it so I start biting my arm while smaking my head really hard with my free palm and making frustrated noises at a high pitch. At this point my handler notices me and asks what has me upset and I tell them that people are liking a movie I don't like and then they'll ask me what movie so I tell them and then they say more stupid things like "oh, I love that movie." And that just makes it even worse so in retaliation I am forced to shit my pants.

>she's one hair dye away from being a Manic Pixie Dream Girl
Not really, Nikki is kind of a shitty person. She borrows money from Bear and then gives it to a homeless man, looks to me like she's pretending to be a good person because if she was she would've used her own money not ask Bear for it. She's also taking advantage of Bear, knowing he simps for her but she's there to tease him and take favors from him.
>>223979832
>>223980353
>i mean maybe liberals can identify with
Liberals can't watch this movie honestly, because instead of seeing what's actually on screen they have to filter through their "men bad" dogma, so you end up with takes that Bear is the ultimate villain and even Wish Nikki was a victim of him. They watch a movie where a guy is lied and manipulated into using a cursed object, then lied and manipulated by an evil spirit into a fake relationship, evil spirit then threatens him his friends and even kills a couple of them, is driven to suicide because it's presented like his only option, and somehow they still end up with "he the real evil because he wanted girl to like him".

I'm oversimplifying it because there's really nothing to say about the Nicky scenes.
The film stops dead in its tracks, suddenly becomes The Nun for about 10 minutes, then we go back to some veeery slow story progression. That's why i say that Nicky is, in a way, the worst character in the film, because she's almost like a narrative dead weight, holding it down from going somewhere. The only scene that has some sort of tension if the party scene, but again, Nicky does a retarded face and then freaks out, like all other scenes featuring her.

Even the only narrative arc that seems to be going somewhere (Bear's friend) is another dead end because Nicky kills her anyway, because the director thought he was being clever by misleading us into thinking it was going somewhere...

But if you think I'm wrong please tell me why you think that this film has an Oscar-worthy screenplay. I'm always curious about other people's perspectives on things. I'm listening.

>some parts I HOPE were supposed to be comedic
Those were the horror parts yes. The movie has comedic elements in it but it's not a comedy not even a comedy horror. To be honest I thought the comedy bits in the movie were so obvious and in your face when they did show up that I never even realized there were actually people interpreting every disturbing, tense and suspenseful moment as being supposedly darkly comedic instead. Black comedy isn't really Barker and Tomlinson's typical style of comedy. We'll know what an actual horror comedy from them looks like when Anything But Ghosts releases next year.

Does Nikki smashing the car window really count as a jump scare though? A jump scare is the very sudden appearance of a threat or a perceived at first threat in the camera frame usually followed immediately by a loud musical cue but we could see Nikki running towards the window for almost a full second before smashing into it. A more traditional jump scare would have featured a more rapid type of jump cut not giving the audience the chance to perceive and process the threat before the loud smashing of the window is heard.

But Backrooms just relied too much on its mcguffin and scrambled to turn it into a movie in the second half

A VERY simple plot. It strikes me as a film that could've worked better as a short, given how similar it is to something that could appear on The Twilight Zone or Tales from the Crypt.
Like I've said, most of the Nicky scenes felt like filler, I feel like you could cut this whole movie down to a 20 minute short and not lose any of the themeing, it would actually help the rythm and make it more direct and less meandering

At the risk of sounding like Joseph II from Amadeus, I would argue that Obsession needed MORE plot, there's too little going on story-wise

Oh, so I just hallucinated the music going BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA every single time Nicky did anything?

The best part was the first time they try to have sex and she snaps put of her possession for a second, she does a little shriek and falls backwards off the bed.

The director and editor probably watched the scene and realized that her going "Waaa!" and falling off the bed like a retard would've been comical, so what did the inspired geniuses do?
They added a loud musical "BWAAA" to when she snaps and falls of the bed.

And that's just the mark of a genius, isn't it?
The scene isn't scary? Just add some out of nowhere musical explosion, it'll become scary somehow.
Not since the days of The Shining have I head of cinematic genius of such magnitude!

Also the scene where they're in bed and he tries to crawl out and she yells: "Don't GOOOOOOOO" or something like that, made me spit out my water in laughter.

Yeah, it's not like Obsession was spammed all over the Internet and was kept in theaters for half a year to squeeze every single penny out of it.
But seriously, I do not care about the profit, any slop that hit all the right beats with the movie-going crowd can churn out a profit, I care if the film was any good in my eyes.

Obsession would've made 8 billion trillion quadrillion dollars and I would still consider it a dumb movie

Yeah, just that easy. Movies with Obsession type success happens all time. Closes an anon can find is Blair Witch with came out almost 30 years ago.

I think this is the focal point of why I disliked the movie. Bear is just such a pathetic coward that it's impossible to sympathize with him - even as someone who was once very shy, awkward, and insecure. I feel like the movie would have been better if there was a possibility - only a possibility - that Bear reflect on himself and his infantile obsession™ with Nikki and decide to do something, anything right. This is why I like the third act, because Bear actually acts; he returns to the store, he goes to Ian, etc. It moves the plot forward.

The OP says that the movie tries to "skip the mystery" of the possession, but I don't think that's true. Obviously we know she's possessed, but we're forced to watch Bear realize it as slowly and painfully as possible. The entire movie is just watching one incredibly unsympathetic faggot walk into the same room in the same haunted house over and over, with the plot only picking up in the third act.

How about Paranormal Activity...came out 19 years ago, made 315 million bucks (adjusted for inflation), cost less than Obsession and it's a much smarter film
>>
>>223982693
Adjust its 450k budget for inflation and it would havethe same budget as Obsession. So no, Obsession was still more successful
>>
>>223982672
Wow, someone who got it, maybe I'm not crazy after all lol

I feel like the film does skip the mystery of the possession....I've recently had an argument with a bunch of people telling them that one of the things I disliked about the film is that everything happens so fast, there's no suspense and the film makes it so obvious that she must be possessed by something since she starts acting like a moron right from the getgo, and the people I was arguing with told me that it's actually a super duper genius idea because making the whole thing ambiguous would actually water down the theme of the film (the theme being muh rape metaphors, of course)

So I said okay, the film subverts the traditional "Is she possessed or is it all in Bear's mind?" trope and goes straight for the jugular....but then does barely NOTHING else until the end. That's why I say that the movie is chock-full of filler and all the Nicky scenes feel unnecessary and just pause the progression for 10 minutes.

My point being, they do subvert the ambiguity and suspense trope, but then they do nothing to justify that subversion. That's like making a monster movie where in the first 10 minutes the monster jumps out and starts eating people imediately....and then what?
We have no clever twists and turns, soooo...the monster jumps out and eats people AGAIN!

....until the end, when it dies, that is.

What a fucking retarded script, I swear to God.

Nothing's wrong with cinematography. Cinematography was one of the few things that I enjoyed about it.

The lighting was very Netflixy, with those stupid piss colors, but it utilized contrast to its full advantage. I really liked the scene where Nicky's talking all sinister in the shadow of CareBear's doorstep and you only see the glint of her eyes in the shadows. That was an eerie visual and a clever little bit of filmmaking.

I also liked the part where she's in the corner (doing...what else? Screaming!) and her face gets all distorted...pretty good use of light and shadows in this film.

I also very much enjoyed the minimalist directing, the camera only moves around when it needs to or to punctuate a certain moment of suspense or tension, there's no crazy shakey-cam or hyper-fast editing....it's not super original as plenty of other recent horror films have attempted this "locked camera" approach, but this was probably the best one I've seen in a long time.

Another thing I liked about the visuals was the shot composition and the use of the 1,37:1 aspect ration, both things I attributed to a specific stylistic choice...but then someone said that it was probably shot this way so that it would be easier to re-format it for TikTok, so that it could be reposted endlessly as part of their little "viral marketing" campaign, it made too much sense to ignore.

The more I learn about this film the less I like it!

But the visuals were neat, and along the subtle themeing they're probably the only things I actually enjoyed about this dumb piece of slop

You know you're exactly like the test audiences that complained that Bear wasn't doing enough to fix the wish that almost forced Barker to rewrite and reshoot several scenes which wouldn't have made the movie work nearly as well. It's OK to not like the movie because you get frustrated with Bear's passivity but that's not the fault of the writing like you're making it out to be, not to mention you're conveniently leaving out that Bear did try to look it up online in the first act and then called the OWW's customer support line to cancel/change the wish in the second act after the cat sandwich incident who told him in no uncertain terms that the only way to fix things was to kill himself.

All of it was completely intentional because that's Bear's character, why do you think the camera lingers on his face as he keeps looking down and away while Nikki is smashing her face with a broken glass bottle at the party and Ian keeps yelling at him to drive her to the hospital?

He doesn't try to fix things anymore after calling customer support until he's finally forced to try something after Nikki kills Sarah by which point it's obviously already too late ,but the plot still moves forward until then. Bear ultimately still wants to be with Nikki and he prefers taking the easy way out always, the customer support guy even encouraged him to still be with her despite everything.

What you want instead is a short film that spends no time at all on developing the relationship between Bear and Nikki and the escalation of her neurotic disturbing behavior because you get frustrated with Bear which you blame on bad writing rather than admitting it's just a matter of personal hang ups. That is just completely dishonest.

>but we're forced to watch Bear realize it as slowly and painfully as possible.
Oh and Bear knew the wish had worked and something was wrong with Nikki as early as the restaurant scene after he gets a phone call from Ian. In the original script the ensuing sex scene afterwards includes foreplay where the real Nikki breaks through again briefly basically telling Bear to stop but he ignores her and keeps kissing and feeling her up anyway. Once again, Bear realizes early on there's a big problem with Nikki, but he procrastinates for the same reasons that he made the wish in the first place, that he's a coward and he wants to be in a relationship with Nikki, and he has no reason not to keep trying to make the relationship work when the alternative is to kill himself.

Remember, Bear suggests to the store clerk to make a wish to undo his own, he wasn't told that by the customer support guy who just said there was only one solution to ending the effects of the wish so there's no real way of knowing if a second wish would've actually worked or not.

I get the feeling the guy is brown and can’t grasp this. It was blatantly obvious Bear was a selfish and neglectful person. Letting his cat die because of neglect. Living in his dead grandma’s house with all her shit still there. Not giving a fuck about Real Nikki’s desires of leaving Ohio and wanting to be a writer. Finding Nicki standing in puke and piss and instead of being concerned is repulsed and then wants to ditch her for “boys night.”

No person in this WORLD would react so nonchalantly if the person they liked started going looney tunes on them, from 0 to 50 in one second, Anon. I get that it's an allegory but the film tries establish itself as realistic, which clashes violently with out main character barely reacting when the girl he likes suddenly starts going all Manson girl on him. Yeah, but the film really shoots itself in the foot by having Nicky act so insanely crazy right from the getgo that it drains the whole setup of all its realism for me.

I mean, the first goddamn scene after the breaking of the magic stick she's already full blown bipolar in Bad News Bear's car and the best he can do is: "Uuuuuuh...are you okay?"

And you know what would've solved that problem? Having her go crazy slowly and having him ignore all the signals until it's too late! They really, really messed up by skipping the "traditional" suspenseful setup, because a story like this really invites this type of narrative style, but I guess they didn't want the 14 year olds who made them 500 million dollars to get bored, so BOO! right away

Because a slow, ambigous and eerie setup is soooo boooooring
>>
>>223984114
Not what Barker wanted. He said change would not be a slow gradual thing but happen instantly. You see that right after he makes the wish. What makes the move so jarring. I don’t know where you’re getting this realism shit from a movie with a magic stick
>>
>>223984273
>He said change would not be a slow gradual thing but happen instantly. You see that right after he makes the wish

I know, and it sucks! It drains for film of any possible suspense it could have and all we're left with is the crazy broad yelling at us, it's so goddamn awful!

If the movie had a slower setup and built suspense over time you could keep your muh rape themes, still have Clan of the CaveBear be a manipulator who takes advantage of Nicky, but you could also have more tension (as opposed to just spooky noises and faces for an hour and a half), the film would be more intriguing and just better paced overall.

...you'd lose the precious 14 year old crowd, but that's what happens when you make a film that's not just something to put in the background at Halloween parties

>I don’t know where you’re getting this realism shit from a movie with a magic stick

This realism shit comes from the fact that the film is set in the real world, people talk like in the real world and (overacting and bad writing aside) everything is (supposed to) be normal. The magic stick is the supernatural intrusion, like in a Twilight Zone episode or something, but it's not a magical, weirdo David Lynch world where everyone is insane.

A slower build up is not the point of the movie. Again, you’re like test audience that wanted Bear to do more. Now you want it where Bear doesn’t know she’s possessed until it’s too late. Point of the movie is Bear knows real fast she’s possessed but is so obsessed with being with her he stays in denial and puts up
with her escalating lunacy all the way to the point she starts killing their fiends
>>
>>223984605
>Now you want it where Bear doesn’t know she’s possessed until it’s too late

Why can't you understand what I'm trying to tell you, Anon?
Alright, I'm going to spell it out for you.

Imagine the same setup up until the scene where Gummy Bear is outside of Nicholas' house in his car, he breaks the stick and nothing happens.
Then the next day Nicky calls him and tells him she wants to hang out all of a sudden. And he thinks that's strange, but joins her anyway. During their date she acts a little bit weird but declares her love for him, he does the same and they end up dating.
THEN, when they're already together, she starts acting strangely, and just like in the finished film Oso ignores it (because he's not even sure that any of that is real) until shit starts getting dead serious, but then it's too late and it becomes clear that the magic piece of wood did work and this entire time she was possessed by an evil spirit or whatever the hell was going on in that ingenious script.

That way you get to keep the themes, him being a manipulator and muh rape themes and him being in denial but you also have a more intriguing and subtle story and you get to do more with the actually creepy elements of the film instead of just some crazy bitch yelling while the music nearly bursts the audience's eardrums.

You lose nothing, you can only gain a better story with this setup. Understand?

Exactly what I said you dumbshit. You want the cliche Bear doesn’t realize she’s possessed until it’s too late. Not the point. He knows she’s possessed early on and him putting up with her escalating craziness is to show how obsessed he is to be with her and basically his ego not being able deal with Real Nikki being tormented by them being together
>>
>>223985045
What difference does it make if he knows that she's possessed or not if she's acting crazy and he's just ignoring her, retard? You're just making the story so much more boring because everyone knows everything.

If you have We Bare Bears see her act crazy and NOT know that she's possessed while STILL ignoring it and not taking her to a doctor or to the psych ward it's just as bad as him knowing that she's possessed and not doing anything about it, except you get to have one final twist where it's revealed that she was actually possessed and her soul was being tormented, too, making it so much worse in hindsight and giving you something to think about after you leave the theater instead of: "Oh, she was possessed and he knew it, that's why he's EVIL!". Same thing, just more intriguing.

Jesus Christ, did this movie shrink yall's brains or something? Why does everybody who comes into contact with it forget how to write a decent story?

It’s about toxic parasocial relationships! How far one guy with onetitist will go to live in his fantasy that the girl he’s obsessed with is into him. It’s not a suspenseful slow reveal movie. It’s not “let’s try and solve this mystery Scoob.”

>It’s about toxic parasocial relationships! How far one guy with onetitist will go to live in his fantasy that the girl he’s obsessed with is into him

You can have the exact same message and have an even more intriguing narrative if you follow the slow-burn formula, Anon.
If he didn't know she was possessed and just thought it was all in his mind or that she was just acting cooky, while deep down knowing full well that something was off about her, maybe not something supernatural, maybe jjst a mental breakdown, but STILL not doing anything about it because he just wants to have his cake and eat it too would be just as bad, or even worse since taking advantage of a person with mental problems is something that actually happens in real life as opposed to magic sticks that grant wishes by possessing people...

...and THEN you reveal that the wish had been granted and you have a supernatural twist, and so the audience goes: "So this guy WAS a supernatural rapist!" and while you come home from the theater you can nthink back on all the hints the director left for you to make you figure out that she was possessed the whole time.

Better than: "She's possessed, he knows it and he rapes her because he's a big meanie. The end, thank you for your money!"

>It’s not “let’s try and solve this mystery Scoob.”

Never said it should be. He doesn't have to investigate what's going on, even though he does in the finished film to a certain extent.

There are people think Bear did nothing wrong. Some argue he didn’t know she was possessed until the end.
Barker original concept was to hint at everything happening being in Bear’s head but producer’s pushed for more obvious supernatural elements. Scene where Bear calls the hotline was not in the script

Well apparently some viewers are deaf, blind and overall stupid because this film spells everything out so much it would be impossible not to understand what's going on if you have a functioning brain.

>Barker original concept was to hint at everything happening being in Bear’s head but producer’s pushed for more obvious supernatural elements

Oh, so it's yet another addition in the "producers ruining everything" book? That's good to know

And you might reply, "but if people are so stupid that they don't understand it when it's spelled out, how would've making it more subtle improve the film?"
And to that I say, there's a reason why dumb movies with robots exploding make billions of dollars whereas intellectually stimulating pictures are referred to as "arthouse films" and make 2 dollars at the box office.
