Anyone here went to see or planning to go see The Horror Show at the Academy Museum in LA celebrating over 100 years of horror cinema? The exhibit runs until July 2027 so there's still plenty of time left if you haven't been yet

Just finished. 100<100 #047
Nutso concept: a Jason clone called Raymond killed 60 people but was eventually captured by the gov't, and PUT UP FOR AUCTION, lmfao. He was bought by an entertainment company for $44 billion, and after a few years they unveiled a reality show where contestants are put in an arena with him who try to kill him. The dialogue is 100% improvised, and frequently painful. Turns out one of the girls is an activist there to try and break Raymond out and rehabilitate him. Mercifully short, kind of like a filmed version of a crazy F13 fanfic, with equal production values.

>Comprising 200 years of eerie storytelling and a century of cinema, The Horror Show bridges the gap between cinema and experience, honoring horror’s enormous cultural impact and enduring popularity.

>On view through July 25, 2027, The Horror Show explores and celebrates horror cinema, highlighting select tropes and themes, all centered around the question: Why do horror films matter so deeply to so many?

>Blurring the line between museum presentation and chilling spectacle, The Horror Show takes visitors on a journey through cinema, starting with an introductory gallery sound installation, into “The Hallway”— modeled after the common horror trope—leading to six themed galleries: Gothic, Psychological, Science, Slasher, Religion, and Ghosts. Each gallery invites visitors into iconic settings, where visitors encounter their favorite creatures, monsters, and objects.

>The exhibition explores representations of identity, sexuality, and ability in horror films including: Alien (1979), The Horror of Dracula (1958), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Get Out (2017), Halloween (1978), Ju-on (1998), Midsommar (2019), Misery (1990), Poltergeist (1982), Ringu (1998), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Exorcist (1973), The Shining (1980), The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)—while also offering a behind-the-scenes look at the storytelling and production processes of these films.

It's been a while since I saw the silent movie, but I knew the legend before that. Isn't the word that powers up the golem "EMETH" (something like "so it is" or "truth"), and when the rabbi wants to destroy the golem, he takes away one Hebrew letter, making it "METH" ("death")? Something like that.

Anyway, it won't be as simple with the AI driven humanoid robots of the near future.

I think seeing it in the theater opening weekend really contributed to me loving it.
The theater experience made it way scarier since I was trapped, and I got to see it before the hype exploded and raised expectations. The production design was impressive, I agree.

Getting caught checking my own digits is a violation of my privacy. You wouldn't understand. I have a deeply personal relationship with those numbers, and you have no right to inspect the circumstances under which I admire them. Suspiria is a masterpiece.

Everyone keeps calling me a samefag, but nobody has considered the possibility that I have an exceptionally consistent worldview. Or that I'm a disgusting little goblin who can't resist applauding himself when nobody else will. The second theory is offensive and will be reported. Jessica Harper is the thinking man's scream queen.
>>
I have been accused of sockpuppeting, pedophiloc ban evasion, and checking my own digits. At this point, the persecution is almost biblical. The Exorcist is an underrated film about being possessed by an entity that makes you do things you later deny.
>>
>>223983511
it's a horror-comedy and Curry also acts in it (that was his whole youtube career foundation). Aaron Paul can work in that but yeah it will almost certainly be seen as a big disappointment in the shadow of Obsession and immediately tank his prestige. But studios have already got him cooking plenty of irons in the fire to bounce back.
>>
>>223983714
That's right, though in this version the word is written a little badge plugged into the golem's chest and a child simply removes it when the golem picks her up. If only the AI golems could be so easily defeated by pulling a single plug.

Tbh it's kind of frustrating that all the journalists think Project Hail Mary and Dune 3 are the genre locks for Best Picture nominations this year over Obsession. Dune 3 isn't even out yet and PHM is just not a well made movie, way too much goofy Marvel comedy and almost a complete lack of tension throughout despite having a high stakes plot and the movie's just too long for its own good. It has the length of an epic without having enough of a story to tell to feel like a true epic. The Martian was the better Weir adaptation and the last good movie Ridley Scott ever made.

Speaking of which, i honestly think macready was the thing since at least when they went to investigate the mothership. Norris got him, then he got Palmer. But my theory is this, The thing when assimilated mac was intrigued by Mac’s lonerness characteristics. In the beginning hes in his shack playing chess and hes clearly annoyed by the Outpost 31 and wishes to be alone and drunk; this is why Childs is more or less seen as the ‘lead’ guy in terms of sturdiness. Mac-thing just happened to take charge because Childs is more ill tempered than chill Mac. Also, this Thing seems to screw over the Things without a care. When he extinguished Norris, he did it without care, and Palmer Thing pointed it out to him thinking they were fine; but Palmer Thing gets betrayed by Mac Thing. This Mac Thing seems to be the real villain, lets assume the Thing just assimilates organisms to survive due to j unseen biological info about it. This means the Mac Thing is selfish and willingly to destroy his other kind if it means he Survives, this is why at the end Blair Thing is mad and yelling at Mac Thing because he betrayed his race for this, and he just simply says “Yeah fuck you too!”. Mac Thing also never seems to assimilate anyone else; meaning this Thing is content with its human form.

I think it is more likely than not that Childs was a thing at the end, but I like to think they were both human, and Mac offering Childs a drink and Childs accepting was the two of them choosing to trust each other after an entire movie of distrust and paranoia. I don't think that reading is particularly realistic but I like it.

but it's not a 100% perfect copy when every cell is capable of independent movement and thought, ergo there's no plausible reason for the cells to perform a functional heart attack, and also not really a way that they could
in practice, all the cells of a The Thing would be working in concert to uphold the illusion of a human form

How should the Thing know the state of his heart is diseased? How would it know a human heart is meant to do that until it's too late to stop it? It just copied and let the physical processes run. In this case it led to a heart attack.

Look at this, mein freund. Its a fake hand: make clearly pour unaltered blood in the fake hand, then fake cuts himself and then shortly removed it after the test was done.
>but how did he had time to know tje blood test would work
Because earlier the blood storage room was hiajcked by Palmer Thing; he opened it, destroyed the blood, then closed and lockdd it, macready thing soon realizes its a legit test and begin preparing methods to bypass it, like having fake body parts since a Thing cant replicate inorganic material, and simply got the fake blood from a combination of the food ingredients in the storage room.

>>
>>223985783
Just because dogs can sense something is off, doesn’t mean the humans will.

The movie even showed that the copies might not even be aware that they're Things until they're forced to defend and reveal themselves.
>>
>>223985783
Dog's senses (smelling, hearing) are heightened more than humans. It's not uncommon in real situations for dogs to be aware of a threat before humans are.
>>

That would imply it isn't a perfect mimic just better than human detection. Then again they find tests and ways to detect it in the movies anyways showing it isn't perfect.

No, the alien dog gets put in the kennel and acts weird as fuck and sits in the center of the room, then it starts making a monsterous growling noise that is unnatural for a dog. Then it starts barring its teeth at the other dogs and they do the same and start growling and barking back at it as it starts morphing into a disgusting monster. It was always going to attack them and they didn't really seem to notice it was a dog when it first gets put in the cage (probably because they're all nice actor doggies hwo know each other) the dog closest to the door is even smiling at the alien dog in the beginning.

They were decades ahead in terms of building talent. Hard to think now, but in the 80s it was thought that Japan might be the future super power to rival America and their entertainment industry took off to match it with all the anime. They had a stock market crisis that fucked them in the ass for decades but the talent was still there.

J-Horror was building a lot of momentum in the 80's with big-budget projects like Sweet Home and low-budget splatterpunk like Tetsuo, and there were a lot of cool, gory special effects being done in V-Cinema like the Guinea Pig series. J-Horror got the wind knocked out of it by the Tsutomu Miyazaki murders ruining the public perception of horror films and horror in Japan never recovered, it was on the verge of making films to rival Hollywood until then.
