The Big Sleep is not only Howard Hawks's best film, but it is the best adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel ever made. However, the sad thing being that The Big Sleep is not, and I'm still talking about the Howard Hawks version, by the way, The Big Sleep is not a very good adaptation of the source material at that, despite the fact that it was written by William Faulkner. His additions are very good, such as making Vivian the primary sister that the movie focuses on rather than Carmen, as it was done in the book. That was the most interesting difference about it. However, the main other differences were meant to compress the plot, because we cannot do the entirety of The Big Sleep in a two-hour runtime. Raymond Chandler's novel is so good. I mean Raymond Chandler's novel writing, his prose writing, it is pretty next level. I have to admit I finished The Big Sleep today, and it is such a great novel. I mean I'm gonna have to read The High Window and Lady in the Lake, and of course, what was it, that other one? The Long Goodbye. I already read Farewell, My Lovely, and that is one of my favorite books ever. Literature is better than film. Literature has reached peaks film never has.

It's a fun film for sure but not really a faithful adaptation of the novel. Marlowe is never really in danger in this film (even those scenes at the end you know he's not going to get killed, which is not at all clear in the novel). But what's amazing is that the film was made at all considering absolutely nothing in the plot was allowable under the code: adultery, drug use, homosexuality, getting away with murder, pornography, etc. Still it's great fun, especially Sonia Darrin's great turn as Agnes.

>Favourite Hawks joint?

"To have and have not", easily. It's an absolutely fantastic romp, the characters are all memorable in one way or another without ever feeling to obnoxiously caricature-ish, Bogart is at the top of his game and so is Lauren Bacall, the cinematography and visuals are Hawks at his best, his style is present on every single frame and there are some truly terrific visuals sprinkled thorought, like the first scene where Bogart and Bacall are talking in his room and the light shines through the blinds, very old-noir style, and the story keeps you engaged every single minute. Come to think of it it's very similar to Casablanca, but I liked this more than I ever liked Casablanca, you just can't bear Hawks' sense of pacing and knack for witty dialogue.
It's a film that engaged me so much I didn't want it to end.

I've made this point here before but Red River is rock solid for most of the runtime and then completely shits the bed during the last 30 minutes. I'm sure the studio forced Hawks to include a shoehorned happy ending. So lame.

>Hawks was disdainful of Marylin Monroe as a talent and a person and was using her services only because, as Hawks put it to Cary Grant and John Wayne, “I think the overdeveloped quality in that little girl is going to be kind of funny.” Grant remarked, “I had no idea she would become a big star. If she had something different from any other actress, it wasn’t apparent at the time. She seemed very shy and quiet. There was something sad about her.” Hawks believed that Monroe had a horrible inferiority complex, and he invariably noted inaccurately that “nobody dated her, nobody took her out, nobody paid any attention to her.”

>as Grant recalled, “Charles Coburn had to chase and squirt Marilyn Monroe with a siphon of soda, a moment he approached with glee. Any seeming reluctance, he later explained, was only his indecision about where on Marilyn’s … um … ample proportions to squirt the soda. Miss Monroe seemed to present so many inviting parts. Everyone on the set awaited the moment with goggling eyes. You could hear a pin drop. Eventually Charles gave it a healthy squirt, and missing Miss Monroe, he hit me full in the puss, thereby completely obliterating me from the scene again.” (In the film, Grant is nowhere seen being squirted by Coburn.)

/a/ is actually pretty civilized and largely unharmed by /pol/faggotry. That's because as soon as the election tourists from /r/eddit started flooding 4chan in 2016, the mods over there cracked down hard on off-topic posts, to the point where they arguably overreacted and shut down completely harmless discussions for a while. Helped keep the board relatively clean, at least in terms of that bullshit. There still is a lot of general on-topic stupidity nonetheless of course.

that's a whole lot of words to rationalize spending your whole career making degenerate pornography

>Hisayasu Sato is a Japanese exploitation film director. He has worked prolifically in the pinku eiga genre. He is known for his "sledgehammer" filmmaking style, and using his exploitation career to tackle serious subjects like obsession, alienation, perversion and voyeurism. He is famous for his "guerilla shooting technique" in which his actors appear on location in public and incorporate unknowing bystanders into the film. Hisayasu Sato’s often violent but highly visual works utilised a multitude of multimedia devices to reflect upon issues such as the power of the gaze, the dehumanising effects of technology and the loss of the individual’s sense of “self” that accompanied Japan’s period of economic boom in the late 80s.

"Degenerate" is a mathematical term that decribes a structure which is, technically, by the basic definition, of some class, but is not otherwise recognizable as one and might lack certain secondary traits that structures of that class usually come with.
Maybe an example will make it clearer: A triangle is defined by three (distinct) points, as the set of points that lie on the three lines between all pairs of those lines. But if all three of those points happen to be colinear (i.e. lying on one straight line) the triangle will collapse into a line. It has area 0 and the triangle inequality does not hold.

Therefore, degenerate porn is porn which technically qualifies as pornography (per definition: showing sexual acts in graphic detail) but goes against genre conventions, which makes it appear just as a regular non-pornograhic film. In other words, French arthouse erotica.

Anyone else have this weird autism where avoid using your keyboard when navigating a website, even if it takes longer to get to your destination? If I want to find a specific movie/page on letterboxd, I open the front page and envision a path I can take to find that movie without using my keyboard.

For example: let's say I want the page for Queen Margot (1994). I remember the past summer I watched a movie starring Adjani. I go to my diary and find that movie. From there I click on her name in the cast to get to Queen Margot (1994)

Another example that actually happened: I wanted to check the release date for Inserts (1975). I remembered my friend having Suspiria in his favorites. I navigated to his profile, opened Suspiria, clicked Jessica Harper, and found Inserts.

I'll only use the search bar if I can't envision the complete mouse-only path to my destination

Oh, he was complaining about the pain and all, don’t you know, so I picked up my fork and I says, “Well, come on, Jack, let me pop it out for you and then you’ll be OK.” He gives me the dirtiest look, you know, but at least he stopped complaining.
>Raoul Walsh to Peter Bogdanovich
>>
>According to Otto Friedrich, Jack Warner responded to the government’s call of service by saying that he wanted to start out with the rank of general, adding that he’d be happy to phone the White House to get President Roosevelt’s approval. Willing afterward to settle for the rank of lieutenant colonel, and assigned to a public relations post in Los Angeles, he outfitted himself for his role, aided by the studio’s tailoring shop. He let everyone know he wished to be addressed as “Colonel.” He ended his “Colonel” days when an authentic colonel arrived at the studio to advise on a film project. When Warner shook his hand, his guest said, “You should have saluted me.”

>Walsh felt close enough to Warner to kid around with him by peppering his studio memos with well-intentioned but botched Yiddish phrases. “They’re after my tuchus again, Jack,” he wrote, referring to Miriam Cooper’s attorneys when they came after him—just as she had been doing since the early 1930s. “I have a chance to pick up a M’tseha on a piece of property,” he wrote in 1947, asking for a loan. “I will either make a fortune out of this or go machoula [meshuga, crazy] again,” he wrote a few days later. “Dear Colonel,” he wrote in August 1945, “The Irish and the Jews are always in trouble—that is what makes the world go ‘round.’”

>Clothier told the story of the caricature he had of Walsh in which Walsh is sitting in his chair, waving his cigarette: Clothier says, “Say, Raoul, I don’t have the actors in the picture but the clouds look terrific.” “Great shot, Bill,” Walsh says. “Looks much better that way.”[19]

>I just got back from Japan. I’d go to a restaurant and the waiter would say, “White Heat! White Heat!” It played well there all the time. The Japanese love everything that ends tragically: they remember that last scene with Cagney and think it’s one of the greatest of scenes. I made another picture, Colorado Territory [1949], in which Joel McCrea and Virginia Mayo were killed at the end. That’s a terrific hit in Japan. They play that and White Heat all the time. Every Saturday night the damn things are playing.

>Your heroes, especially in gangster films, always seem to die at the end. You once said that one reason you were happy to have Bogart in High Sierra [1941] was that you could kill him off, but you didn’t feel you could kill off George Raft.
>He turned it down, you know, Raft. [Jack] Warner told me. Warner always referred to actors as “those bums”, and he said, “Raoul, this bum turned the script down. Why don’t you talk to him?” So I went to George’s house and had lunch with him. We talked it over, but George was adamant. He said, “No, I don’t want to die in the end.” I said, “Georgie, you’ll have to, the censors will demand it.” He said, “To hell with the censors, then.” So I went back to Warner and said, “Jack, no going. Talked to him for two or three hours. He doesn’t want any part of it.” Warner says, “Well, who the hell are we gonna get? Goddamn it, we gotta get going!” He hated to hold anything up. I said, “Well, you’ve got a fellow under contract – Humphrey Bogart.” Warner said, “Do you want to take a chance with him?” I said, “Of course I will.” “All right, go and see the bum.” I went over to Bogart and he read the script and called me up about midnight: “Christ! This is good. When do we start ?” So that was that.
