I hate NuTrek but it now feels like a minor miracle we got the TNG crew back together one last time.
>>
>>224052698
It was a miracle. And they, of course, totally fucked up that miracle of opportunity.
>>
>>224053451
What went wrong?
>>
>>224052698
Season 3 was actually somehow pretty ok. They took a rancid piece of trash and managed to make it decent. Almost like its a soft reboot of that trash fire.

>It was a miracle. And they, of course
let the guy that understood it go. This is the closest new trek felt to real trek so of course Kurtzman felt threatened and abandoned what it could have led to (Legacy)
>>
>>224052698
TNG ended perfectly, there was no need for this.
>>
>>224053971
There was after the movies ruined everything
>>
I liked parts of it. Some of the stuff with Riker and his grief managed to be touching. But then you have goofy shit like Jack, who is just an awful fanfic character, and a constant feeling of this being an indulgent fan-wank self-applauding victory lap.

I'm sure if you've been a fan for decades or worked on it there's real catharsis, but as someone that only got into Star Trek in 2021 I barely even remember most of it. I still think "All Good Things" is a better ending, though I guess Picard is less offensive than Nemesis.
>>
>>224054056
>But then you have goofy shit like Jack
That was clearly just attempting to populate the potential Legacy cast
>>
Was there a reason why Will Wheaton wasn't on? Surely people don't hate him that much

Too unstable. Stunning and Brave is only acceptable if it's merely acting and under control. Disrupting the filming schedule costs money and Wil is the type to go running to social media to spill the beans over any minor perceived micro aggression. No one wants to deal with that.
>>
>>224054401
He’s a total idiot. It might’ve been cool to see a reappearance of Wesley if it was done right. If such a goal was even possible given how unpopular the character was/is.

Did they explain how pic related was possible? Haven't watched Trek consistently since sometime during the TNG movie era.
>>
>>224052698
And there it is, it might have been the biggest shit ever filmed, but you guys would still see it because "omg, so much fanservice!".
>>
>>224054740
In universe, he manifested that way to be there with them. Out of universe, they just forgot.
>>
The worst part about it was unfortunately Stewart himself. I don't know what character he was playing but it wasn't Picard. Weak, timid, soft-spoken, anemic, apologetic and pathetic. And you know he had substantial creative control over both what Picard had ended up being like and how to play him. It's a terrible shame.
>>
>>224054677
And then he interacted with his mom in Prodigy.
>>
>>224054759
>omg, so much fanservice!
So fucking what? When did making fans happy become this bad thing?
>>
>>224054772
Because it's all style over substance. Nobody talks about the plot of that season, or the villians or whatever else. It's always "OMG, FANSERVICE". If I want to see Enterprise D again, I can go watch TNG. Give me interesting story that people want to talk about istead of dangling keys in front of my face.
>>
>>224053971
Correct but fans are mentally ill infants now.
>>
>>224054788
Forgot to add, this season added Picards son, AND NO ONE CARES. That's how little it mattered.
>>
>>224054764
Stewart wasn't a writer and never really understood the character, as evidenced by the movies where he had much more clout and creative freedom. He was a good actor that needed solid writing to squash his bad ideas. Unfortunately nuTrek and modern media in general is a bastion of bad writing so there was never really any hope.
>>
>>224054810
I tend to agree, it's just hard to accept that he could play a character for so long and so well and simply not get it. He wasn't a stupid man either so it's so strange.
>>
There was a rumor that Picard was meant to die in season 1 for real. And given how awkward his sudden "return" via golem was, I think they really wanted to do it, and then hastily rewrote the ending.
>You are an immortal golem now, except we only gave you whatever few years you have left to live, because reasons, lol
>>
>>224054810
I think it was less "never understood", and more "give me something cool to do, all I do is sit in a chair and give speeches. Let me kick some ass already!". And they did. And it just didn't feel like Picard, but made Stewart happy.
>>
>>224054788
Because the idea was seeing where they all are in that future timeline. Doing so with respect was the right call. They weren't all on the same ship in their old roles. That would have bene pathetic. But seeing where each was and letting them get together again was good. It meant they still had appreciation of who they were without giving up their growth. Not everything has to be "muh deconstruction" and having them all become self-absorbed assholes. Somehow this idea of ruining characters and settings for a moment of drama has become some stand-in for growth. It started with JJ blowing up Vulcan for a quick unearned moment of drama and now we just expect some kind of character and setting assassination as a form of growth. It isn't. It's cheap and disrespectful. After all they did together, they would come together for a last adventure working together. Matalis got it and Kurtzman didn't because he's an Abrams disciple.
>>
>>224052698
>I hate NuTrek but it now feels like a minor miracle we got the TNG crew back together one last time.

You are realizing that just now?

Picard Season 3 was a crazy miracle. You had a producer who was a Trek fan, he convinced the TNG crew to come back for one last reunion, the old writers from Season 1 and 2 were fired, and the Producer did it all with a reduced budget.

Yet all you Trek fans on this board kept bitching about how Picard Season 3 was not as good as the TNG TV series and the plot moved too slow.

Idiots! You people should be grateful Season 3 happened at all. It's a way better TNG crew send off than Star Trek Nemesis.
>>
If you listen to Spiner and Frakes on their podcast they still genuinely think the first 2 seasons of Picard were amazing lol
>>
>>224054862
>Because the idea was seeing where they all are in that future timeline.

>Where are they in the future? Well, apperently they haven't talked to each other in 20-30 years!

>Not everything has to be "muh deconstruction"

That's not what I asked about. I wanted plot that people want to talk about. But nobody does, it's all "Look, Enteprise D!".

Remember how this season introduced Picards son? No, no one does, and no one talks about him. What was even the point, other than shocking reveal?

>It's cheap and disrespectful.

Yes, it was, like all nostalgia baits are.

>After all they did together, they haven't talked to each other in decades. Friends!
>>
>>224053899
>What went wrong?
The ratings were high and fans loved Season 3.

Star Trek Picard Season 3 was supposed to help reboot the franchise and launch a new TV series. The pitch was called Star Trek Legacy.

But Alex Kurtzman absolutely hated that Picard Season 3 did so well. It was the only NuTrek season he was not involved in making. So he used his authority to shut down the Star Trek Legacy idea. Instead he pushed Star Trek Academy instead to get made. It was Alex Kurtzmans final act before he was fired.

Learn to separate vapid actors from the works and writing. I know this is a hard pill to swallow but almost all actors are twits. They're paid to say something someone else wrote and just look good doing it.
>>
>>224054056
>But then you have goofy shit like Jack, who is just an awful fanfic character, and a constant feeling of this being an indulgent fan-wank self-applauding victory lap.

My main problem with Jack is that he's supposed to be in his early 20s, but the actor is almost 40 years old. A total miscast.

They should not have made Jack so young. He should have already been an older and more mature character if they wanted to use the same actor.
>>
>>224054924
They don't seem vapid, they seem like two normal guys. Frakes also has hundreds of directing credits, that's what he's primarily been doing for the last 30 years as opposed to acting. I think it's just an inability to see something for what it is due to the bias of having worked on it or knowing people that did.
>>
>>224054082
>Was there a reason why Will Wheaton wasn't on? Surely people don't hate him that much
Wesley was in Picard Season 2. He had a brief scene to show off that he now has magic powers similar to Q, and was sent to recruit someone.

But for whatever reason Wesley never drops by to see his Mom. He hasn't seen in her 20 years but whatever.
>>
>>224054957
>and was sent to recruit someone.
Soong asian daughter, who somehow spawned generations of white Soongs, and was so beloved in her family I guess, that 400 years later latest generation of Soong were building androids in her image.
>>
>>224054936
yeah i only watched the first couple of their podcast and didnt mind it and was prepared to go along with it a while but when Frakes started praising Academy after it aired i noped the fuck out of there and never watched it again.
>>
>>224054914
>Remember how this season introduced Picards son? No, no one does, and no one talks about him. What was even the point, other than shocking reveal?

Picard Season 3 was supposed to pitch a sequel series called "Star Trek Legacy" where Picard's son would play a major role as a crew member.

>Yes, it was, like all nostalgia baits are.
Not all nostalgia is bad. The TNG crew needed a proper ending and send off movie. That Nemesis movie was terrible. Season 3 did what it needed to do for giving the TNG crew one last goodbye. The reunion concept was good for one season and it did the job well
>>
>>224054899
>If you listen to Spiner and Frakes on their podcast they still genuinely think the first 2 seasons of Picard were amazing lol
Well of course they would. Frakes directed around half a dozen or so episodes of Picard Season 1 and 2.

Obviously.
>>
>>224054936
Seems the difference between older US & UK actors. UK actors from old Doctor Who seem pretty open to admit how dogshit the new seasons are because theyre not working on them anymore. US actors just praise shit they have no reason to because they're still hoping there's a job in it for them
>>
>>224054899
Frakes worked on Picard S1 and S2. He's not gonna trash his own show.
>>
>>224055138
I lost a lot of respect for Frakes for working on Discovery. Just showed he's a directing whore.
>>
>>224055153
I can't hate him for it. Hollywood is a small town. Everyone knows everyone. Frakes knew it was best to keep his mouth shut. Especially since he was directing stuff during the peak of the woke era of 2017.
>>
>>224054917
The causality is wrong here really, Kurtzman was only fired because he had been claiming the low ratings weren't his fault, that the original audience wasn't worth pandering to, and S3 proved that wrong.
>>
>>224055226
Fair but it speaks of lack of any kind of respect for trek. He was a willing participant in the BS of Kurtzman trek and that is hard to forgive. I get trying to find work, but it just means a whore mentality to participate in that.
>>
>>224055249
NTA but his mindset is probably "if I don't do this, it'll be even worse, and Trek is already in danger of dying". And considering that it looks like we might not get more ST for at least a decade, he was kind of right.
>>
>>224055249
>Fair but it speaks of lack of any kind of respect for trek. He was a willing participant in the BS of Kurtzman trek and that is hard to forgive. I get trying to find work, but it just means a whore mentality to participate in that.

To be fair, Frakes only Directed the episodes. Frakes didn't write them.
>>
>>224054899
Actor only see the production side. They see the motivated people on set, the makeup artists, production assistants, and the fun they had between shots chatting with old friends. They no longer care about the story.
>>
>>224055249
If you listen to him talk about Picard and Academy it seems he genuinely likes those shows as hard as that is to believe. So it's more a case of him having terrible taste than knowingly working on something awful just to make money.
>>
>>224055346
I'm not sure what's worse. Actually, him liking those shows is worse. I'd get just trying to get work. It's whorish but understandable. Liking them is a bigger indication of leftie mush brain.
>>
>>224052698
burton is the only one who is still sort of active. nobody but stewart had any conflicts preventing a reunion. shouldnt take a miracle for stewart to swallow his pride and throw his friends a bone.
>>
>>224055346
Frakes was also an actor. Remember that anon. He says what he needs to say and knows what not to say.
>>
>>224055437
Stewart refused to reprise his Picard
role for 20 years. Then when he decided to do it, he waited until his 80s! Far too late.

He should have reprised the role in the early 2010s when he was still young enough to be a little more physical.
>>
>>224055454
so we agree stewart was a selfish jerk
>>
>>224055437
>>224055515
It's not really Stewarts responsibility to compensate for his co-stars having shitty careers post trek. He had his own life, projects he was working on, presumably other stuff he wanted to spend his time on.

exactly, I caught parts of it and none of these characters act like they should, it's all very melodramatic and manipulative, the dialogue is that same "umm, like, shit fuck, totally, like" troonlennial writing in every streaming show, the plot was nonsense, they still shit on starfleet and the federation by portraying them as evil
>>
People always suck Terry Matalas' cock and make up crazy headcanons about how Kurtzman "fired" him out of jealousy, when Terry is just as much of a hack writer as Kurtzman, Chabon, Goldsman don't notice the pattern he comes off as a massive egotist, the characters say "M'talas Prime" like 47 times come on man, and his Jack Crusher character is a painfully obvious Gary Stu self-insert
>I'm a neckbeard dweeb IRL but in STAR TREK I'm this Chad guy who has the power to read minds and I'm also Picard's son and I have the power of Borg and Q and all the ladies want my dick!
